A Half A Million Thank You’s

Good Morning,

I just wanted to share with all of you that yesterday the number of slaps achieved for this humble blog reached 500,000.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you for your kind support and loyalty.

I would be remiss not to mention Roberto for his daily hard work in posting all your comments as well as continually improving the blog and its facilities.

I must also pay tribute to Roger and Chris from the office who have allowed me free range to conduct this blog as I see fit and, of course, a big thank you to our mystery PA 007.

There are some nights when I am blogging at 2:00am in the morning and this of course has affected my free time which, without the understanding of my wife and blogging partner Heidi…………………..well, let’s just say we would (delete have) never have reached this goal.

Mostly, I just want to say thanks again to each and every one of you who have and will continue to read my blog thingy.

The reason I will keep blogging is simply the knowledge that all my friends out there are enjoying the stories and appreciating the answers to their questions.

Knowing this is the only reward I need………………………………………………………….apart from an Aston Martin………………….

Your friend always,

John

  1. Congratulations Mr. Heald. Without you, Heidi and all those that assist you this blog would be nothing. When I begin the blog, I wasn’t sure what it was. Thank God I found it. I look forward to checking out your stories, photos and interviews and personal statements that take place during your life. Once again, congratulations my friend.

  2. John, Congrats to you & Heidi for the wonderful and informative Blog…500,000 and climbing…You work very hard on this every day and it shows….Our excitement builds as we near the end of the month…See you then…

    Thanks for the Great JOB!
    Frank

  3. Hi John,

Congratulations – Half a Million – WOW. And Bravo to Roberto and of course Heidi. I think you totally deserve your Aston Martin – Roberto – Please forward this to Miami offices.

A morning singles get together sounds like a very good idea.

And your follow-up Mrs. Barsby story – after reading it I began to feel a little sad. It does seem like she is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. I hope she manages to get home safely and her family will be able to look after her and get her any medical help she may need.

Enjoy your weekend John & Heidi,
    Carol

  4. John,

Just a note to let you know that I’ve joined the throngs who have purchased a ‘I’ve seen John’s (blog) thingy!’ T-shirt.

I’ll be wearing it proudly on my upcoming cruise on the Conquest. I will, without doubt, be envied by all. Either that or folks will wonder in disbelief that I’d spend time looking at some guy named John’s thingy.

Nonethenone, keep up the fantastic work and stay away from that nasty women who was so intent on getting you to open the Casino while in port.

    Regards,

    Greg Baldasarri, Thingy Reader

  5. Congratulations!!!!!!

Keep up the great work on your one of a kind “Blog Thingy” and we will keep reading and posting!!!!

  8. WOO HOO! Let’s all celebrate and take a cruise!!!!!!

  9. Dear John
500,000 and counting- I think I am repeating what others have said- the blog is great- we all appreciate your time, Heidi’s too, and I must not be the only one looking forward each day to the next chapter… Can’t wait to meet you and hear your voice- after all these month’s I think all of your reader’s think the same. I have about 25 days until the cruise, can’t wait to fly into Rome a day early and start a wonderful 2 weeks. You have made this time before the cruise so entertaining, keep up the great job, photos and letters etc- the interviews really give a different perspective about the crew and everyone connected to cruising- You need to do an interview with the travel channel- it has alot of tips, shows and ideas for the vacationer/cruiser. See you soon.

    Karen

  10. 500K!! Holy cow!!
That means we are only a couple of months away from a million hits.
If you’re buying the cokes for everyone at 500K, what are you going to buy us at a million?

Imagine how many hits you’ll have once the bloggers cruise comes around.

Congrats John!! A huge, impressive milestone!
    David

  11. WAY TO GO!!! We’ll be at 1 million in no time!

    Larry and Sharon

    And a million and one.
Bless your heart and bloody stumps.

  14. Congratulations ! John and Heidi… You had made history….and fill dreams… every time I look at your blog thingy (that is everyday!) it bring us memories of the wonderful cruise we took with you back in March. Are you going on the Splendor during the voyage to South America in 2009. We would like to know to book it…specialy the one sailing from Argentina.
You are the best CD and of course Heidi.
Remember behind a suscessful men is a wonderful women……LOL LOL
    Regards,
    Mary & Moe…

  15. This is a great Blog. We have cruised with John 4 times in the past and will be with him in Aug. 2008 on the new Splendor. Can’t wait.

  16. Congradulations John. You are a great CD.

  17. CONGARTS!!!!!! to both you and Heidi.. Please don’t stop the blog thingy…Also thanks for the information about the chocolate for the warming cake.. can’t wait to get the ingredients and make it.. Maybe tonight.. because it’s our 22nd wedding anniversary today…

    Thanks again
    Debbie

  18. John, Heidi, Roberto; et al.

Congrats on the accomplishment. It is of such magnitude that it should not be treated lightly.

Now the Carnival PR/Marketing Dept. should
ante up for all the free publicity and have the Aston Martin for you when you arrive at the next port or your home whichever you prefer. They also need to give Heide and Roberto a nice gift or salary increase as well.

They could not buy this kind of publicity. I bet Carnival sales have increased quite a bit since you started your blog.

25 days till were onboard the FREEDOM

    Dave (Jo and Dave)

  19. Congratulations, John & Heidi.

I found the blog, and started reading it 2 months prior to our Mediterranean cruise on the Freedom at the end of June. It was an amazing source of information and FUN (just like you).

After the cruise, I can’t stay away from it. Hearing the stories, and seeing the pictures of places that I have been, keeps a big smile on my face.

Thanks also for posting Cody & Ally on the website with your “booger” song. They were with our group of 14, and that night made their cruise experience so memorable.

    Keep up the great work!

    Kevin (Famiglia Bausch)

  20. John, and just think CARNIVAL was amazed when you hit 25,000. I see your title moving way up in the alphabetical order to one starting with VP. You deserve it. I think you my have to start looking for a home in the Miami area.

Before you started this a lot of us only heard the word BLOG used and never even read one. Heck, I didn’t even know what a Blog was. Now we posts comments and some of us have even started our own Blogs thanks to you.

There have been people that have come to this Blog that have never cruised before. Now, not only do they have a cruise booked, it’s on a CARNIVAL ship. You also have had long time cruiser that never sailed with CARNIVAL that have now booked for the first time with CARNIVAL. Boy, would it be nice to know how many people have booked a CARNIVAL cruise as a direct result of YOUR THINGY.

So John I lift a DIET COKE, in your honour, to salute you. JOB WELL DONE MATE. See you in 169 days.

    “BIG” ED
OFFICIAL ASSISTANT TO THE CRUISE DIRECTOR

  21. Roberto:
    You do good.
Thanks for the Fan Mail address Block on the side.
Ok, how long has it been there??
    Double Nought Seven:

I wrote that in invisible ink for you!

  22. John,

I’ve been with you on this blog thingy since day one, through each milestone – 100,000. 200,000 slaps. . ., through each telling of your good times and not so good times. When we all get together on the transatlantic in 86 days maybe we can toast to the 1-millionth slap on this blog thingy.

All my best to you and Heidi – until then.

    Sue

  23. CONGRATULATIONS! TWO THUMBS UP!!

  24. John,

As a follow up on your comments about the ENGLISH vs. AMERICAN ENGLISH language differences I went back in my archives and found this little gem.

    Enjoy
    Dave (Jo and Dave)

    Language – ode to plurals

We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?

If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,

And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,

But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,

But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!

Let’s face it – English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England. We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham? Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend. If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? We ship by truck but send cargo by ship. We have noses that run and feet that smell. We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway. And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on.

And, in closing, if Father is Pop, how come Mother’s not Mop?
And in New Jersey you ask for Soda not a Pop; and they make a party, not throw a party; they go down the shore, not to the shore; is it a Gyro or a submarine sandwich?

  25. 500,000 slaps on your blog thingy. Yippee ki ay! Congratulations

Just dropping by to add my CONGRATULATIONS!! to the many that precede it. What you have done, and are doing, is just incredible. It is obviously much appreciated by all! Thanks to both you and Heidi (as well as to all of those who provide assistance, especially Roberto and PA 007).

    Inez & Dean

  33. Congratulations,

That is quite a goal for someone who does not even know what a blog is. I would have posted earlier, but I was at work trying to earn money for tee shirts and scrapbooks, and important stuff like that.

    Kevin

  34. Hi John,

I absolutely love your blog thingy. I read it everyday. In fact, your blog and good cup of coffee start my day. My husband and I are taking our first cruise ever February 9th thru the 16th, 2008, aboard the Carnival Freedom out of Miami. I believe I read somewhere on your blog that you and Heidi are leaving for the Carnival Splendor sometime next year and I want to know if you will still be on the Freedom when we sail. If so, we would love to meet you.

We have a lot to celebrate on the cruise. Both of us have January birthdays and we are celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary on January 19th. We are also blessed with our good health and two beautiful children, ages 18 and 4 (don’t ask). We are also darn happy they aren’t coming with us!

Looking forward to meeting you. Angela

P.S. I found out about your blog thingy in a lengthy article in the travel section of The Houston Chronicle. The article said some really nice things about you and Carnival. Look it up and see what they are saying about you. :-)

  35. Hi John,

I received my tee shirt today! Turned out great and David is extremely jealous. (His is coming in a few days because of a glitch in the ordering process but shhh don’t tell him.)

I have been reading up on our ports of call especially Rome which I have looked forward to all of my life. We have arranged to come in a couple of days early and have a small hotel right in the heart of all of the sites! It’s called Hotel Colosseum seems to have an old world charm to it. I have been reading about all of the pickpocketing and such that goes on in Rome and I must admit that I have gotten more than a little concerned although David tells me not to worry. I was wondering what your thoughts are on this and also about riding the train to the port with carryon luggage.

Have you tried any of the sugar free chocolate? David loves it and I have to hide it from him for much of the same reasons that Heidi has. We will try to bring you some beans on our cruise in October. I’m sure they will make it as David doesn’t care for them . Only the chocolate.

Congratulations on the blog and keep the entries coming!

    Barbara

  36. Hi Heidi:
Quick, please, it is 5:54 pm Edst 8/03/2007 and your webcam has the most beautiful shot of the moon on the water and half the moon. Aim your camera just a schosh higher and get all the moon.

    Nanette

  38. Hi John,
Congratulations on reaching 500000 hits. I just want to say thank you for all the hard work you and your wife do in producing the blog. I have read the blog since day one and every day without fail you bring a smile to my face every day.
In May/June just gone i took my GCSE’s which involved me doing 7 solid hours of revision a day. After finishing my revision i would sit infront of my computer and read your blog. At the click of a mouse my thoughts changed from maths equations into the amusing things you write about in your blog. I used your blog as a way to chill out and get myself through my exams. Thank you for this.
I have just about got over my July 12th cruise but the fun memories live on. All i have to do now is wait for my exam results. :(
Thanks again for all your hard work,
    All the best

    Mona

  41. Congrats and a big thank you to you, Heidi and everyone that makes your blog thingy so special.

  42. Congratulations John and Heidi! Thanks for the blog thingy. It makes my day to come and read it. I told my husband yesterday that having spent all these months reading your blog, I am ready to book a cruise with Carnival. We have been told we would not enjoy it as much as another cruise line we have been on, I want to find out! I am enjoying the interviews with the other CD’s.

Heidi, I love your posts so much! Your little stories about your life on board are great. My husband and I work together, play together and almost always are together. I think we could do it on a cruise ship?! Although, I am glad he doesn’t have John’s problem with sugar free jelly beans!

Congratulations again on your accomplishment. Keep up the good work!

  43. Congratulations John and Heidi,

500,000 hits is such a big deal in so short a time. I first came across your blog thingy because I log onto Carnival.com everyday to see what the upcoming cruises are. I was on the Valor with friends March 11/07, a week after the Freedom set sail. I decided when I came back from that cruise that next year I wanted to go on the Freedom and have been reading your blog everyday since then. I do hope that you and Heidi are on the Freedom in March although I haven’t booked it yet. My travel agent is on holidays (probably a cruise LOL) until next Wednesday so I haven’t gotten an answer back from him. Unfortunately, I can’t come on the bloggers cruise in January but if I don’t meet you and Heidi in March another time.

Again my congratulations and let’s go for a million.

All the best and have a nice weekend. It’s a long weekend in Canada as it’s our Civic Weekend.

    Cindy

  44. Hi John,
I have booked a cruise on the Freedom for March 29, 2008. Will you still be the Freedom’s cruise director? Do you know when we will know who will the the cruise director for that time?
    Keep up the excellent work!
Hope to see you on the Freedom!

  45. Hi John! Hi Heidi! I was waiting patiently for a reply, and sure enough there it was! I know how busy you guys are, so I really appreciate the response. How do you do it? Do you literally sit at the computer and just blog away every night? How?!!!! You guys see the same ports week after week in Europe. What makes it exciting for you? What keeps you motivated to see it week after week? To do the Port Talks, talk about the same tours, etc., etc. John you’ve been doing this for a loooooooong time! You ain’t no spring chicken! haha But seriously… your energy and dedication are just unbelievable. And to think you found a good lookin’ chick-a-dee to help you out with all the madness! Woohoo! Hey, so yeah I had to cancel my cruise on October’s Mediterranean voyage, but my group of 50 PEOPLE are so excited, they can’t contain themselves!! Almost every one in the group will be visiting Europe for the FIRST time. So go easy on ‘em! I will definitely remind you closer to the Sail Date about the Group, and the Group Name so that you can “show them some love” as I put it before. They will absolutely love that!!!!! Now let me see a picture of John at the DISCO!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahaha. Keep up the great work guys. Who knows, you might just see me on the “Splenda” next year (I’m from Nu Yawk, so pardon the accent). tee-hee-hee. Later guys! So glad you have this blog….

  46. Congrats on the Half-Mil mark! I’m glad I jumped in at the right time…

Speaking of cigars, have you experienced the Montecristo Habana #2 Torpedo? It’s my personal favorite…

    Regards,

    MedCruiser- Manuel

  47. Hi John

I will be on the Freedom on October 4, as I said in my last blog. My Cabin is #7440 and we would like reservations for the supper club for the 4th or 5th night, but not on Formal night. I am glad to know Todd will be on the Liberty in Sept. I am leaving for the Pride (Mexican Riviera) tomorrow, so I will check for your blog again when I return home. Again, thanks and we are looking forward to the Freedom in October!!

  48. Dear John;

Congratulations on one half million “slaps”. Your blog is one of the first site I go to when I first get on my computer in the morning. Atta Boy!!!

My husband and I have never had the pleasure of being on a cruise where you are the CD but the January 19 “Blog Thingy” cruise will be our first. We are both looking forward to it. We are also booked on the Splendor Sept 23, 2008 hopefully you will be the CD. I am scouting out where to get an Aston Martin for you!?! Keep you fingers crossed I can find just the right one for you. See you in January.

  49. John,
Congratulations! But it is not you who should e thanking us, we should be thanking you! You have done such a great job at keeping us informed and laughing til no end.
I am off to Mississippi for the week. Will have to catch up when I get back…still no internet access there as yet. I notice Big Ed, wrote “See you in 169 days.” Does this mean he will be joining us after all?
May all your dreams come true, AJ, Astin Martin, whip cream and all!
    Elaine

  50. To John and Heidi,
Congratulations and thank you both for sacrificing your precious free time to bring fun and laughter into all of our lives. I can’t ever imagine not having the blog to keep me entertained. Keep up the good work (and thanks for the supper club reservation).
    Deb xxx

  51. Congratulations John! Can’t wait to read the blogs that take you to the one million mark!

  52. John and Heidi,
Your blog is the highlight of my day. Keep up the great work. It is well worth the effort.

  53. John,
I have thoroughly enjoyed the blog. A group of 4 “Cruise Divas” cruised the med on the Liberty in 2006 and just recently booked for another group of 5 on 5.10.08 on the Freedom Greek Isles cruise. We will miss your presence on the Freedom next year. Since we have been to Rome a few times, any suggestions for our full day in Rome with the overnight on the ship following the cruise. Also – any chance of getting a Freedom Deck Plan sent out – just wanted to get an idea of our cabin locations (6323 & 6309). Any comments on a balcony triple cabin would be appreciated – are they more spacious than a balcony double? Thanks for any help.

P.S. I am a big Beatles fan so I am really looking forward to Ticket to Ride show. I really enjoyed the Beatle tribute show last year on the Liberty.

    Sue G

  54. Congrats!!!!!

  55. Congratualtions! You are truly the best, we are so looking forward to our cruise on the Freedom–see you 8/17!

  56. Congratulations John and Heidi! I have read the blog thingy from day one and still enjoy it as much as I did from the beginning. I still start every day reading the blog which is a great way to start my day. Thanks to you both for all you do.
    Leona and Mt. Holly John

  57. 500,000 slaps……I guess that makes most of us “slap happy”!!!

Add to all the others, my appreciation for your time, and Heidi’s patience, required to bring us this blog thingy again and again.

    Ta!

    Terri

  58. hoiiii john
    Congratulations, Half a Million wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
go go go up to one million.
really nice too read the blogs
    i am a big fan
    groetjessss marij van dinter
    ook voor heidi natuurlijk

  59. Hey John,

Congrats on reaching a milestone. I remember in April it was less than 100000. I knew CCLS predictions of this blog were wrong. All of you thought that it would peak within the first 2 months, and then die down, but not this blog. I bet this steady rise of “slaps” is just the beginning, as more and more people find out about your thingy.,,,,and what a thingy it is. :-) Keep up the good work.

Been reading your blog from day 1, but only now decided to create an account, as i stumbled over a question that CCL land-based staff cannot answer. …. Is it possible to get cash at the casino for play purposes without incurring a fee? I know you can get a certain amount per cruise from the purser charged to your shipboard account, but there is a transaction fee, what about from a casino?

  60. [...] A Half A Million Thank You’s Good Morning, I just wanted to share with all of you that yesterday the number of slaps achieved for this humble blog […] [...]

  61. John,

Looking for information on the change in itinerary for the Freedom in 2008 – Rhodes > Marmaris, Turkey. Just want to be sure that Carnival will be offering a ship sponsored excursion to Rhodes. I haven’t seen any other comments on this change for 2008 in the blog – what is Carnival’s reason for this itinerary change?

    Thanks, Sue

  62. I’ve never written before but I’ve been reading this since the beginning.

Congratulations on 500,000. It must take it’s toll since it is so much of your free time. It is really appreciated though.

I think Carnival should get you and Heidi your Aston Martin immediately. Your column has helped Carnival immensely.

I am writing to ask a question. My sisters and I (and our husbands) are cruising December 9th on the Miracle
we all are crafty. One time I cruised and the Carnival ship had arts and crafts class because “two crafty ladies” was cruising and taught the class. Carnival must have given them the supplies because we made a carnival logo notebook and pen holder. As well as a few other things. My question is this, we are willing to teach arts and crafts on sea days when we cruise, does Carnival supply the items needed to teach, and is there someone I need to contact to discuss this. I am sorry to ask this on the Blogger thingy but I didn’t know where else to go. Thanks for your time in this matter

  65. John, do you remamber Flat Joey? Just to give an idea of who we are, we are his Nanny and Granddad. You arrainged for “Flat Joey” to have his picture taken with the Captain.

  66. Hello John and greetings again from Boston. Congratulations on making the Big 50…0000! This blog thingy is catching on. Chris is a TA and is telling all her clients about it. The feedback she’s gotten is great!!

It’s just a little over a month before we sail with you on September 10th. This is one cruise we are really looking forward to. We are not planning any pre or post packages. We were wondering what you or the other bloggers can recommend for excursions. This could be our only visit to the Med.

Also you made a generous offer to make Supper Club reservations. When would you like the information for that? Keep up the great work.. From what you write, you enjoy this as much , if not more than we do.

    By the way…www.redsox.com

  67. Hello John,

Thanks for telling us in the Q&A that anyone can particpate in the build a buddy thingy onboard the ships. My younger sister was a little disappointed when she found that on the Capers because she thought she was too old to participate. Heh, maybe next time she’ll join in on the fun.

    Cheers.

  68. hi john it is us again the sultanas. . we have contacted miami office re our lost bag but we have had no answer yet. . do you think that by some sort of magical technology the photographers on board the carnival can trace the photos we had bought on board if we give them our details plus folio number etc. . .we obviously would be more than willing to pay for the copies as it seems that our dear carnival blue bag will not be easily found. . . .as you can understand the photos taken on board mean a lot to us so we are trying to do everything possible to get copies of them. . .thanks for any help you can give us. . irene & godwin sultana xxxx
