Highlighting the M/S Holiday & Cruise Director Steve Cassel……Oh Yes, and the 15 Smartest Kids in the World

Is it me or are some Greek people really rude. Now, I know that is a very abrasive way to start today’s blog but ……………well……..I have been wanting to say this for weeks now and after today, I had to say something. Obviously, I don’t mean all Greeks, I don’t even mean all Greeks from Greece or from Athens where we are today but bloody hell…………they are tough people to deal with and the ones I have met today are like nothing I have met before in the other ports.Over the last few weeks, we have gotten lots of comments from guests (including those with Greek heritage) that they found the merchants, guides and people involved in day to day interaction with guests rude and abrasive. Here is one example just from today from three cabins.

From: FREEDOM PURSERS
Sent: Sunday, August 12, 2007 3:20 PM
To: FREEDOM PURSERS
Cc: FREEDOM CHIEF PURSER; FREEDOM CRUISE DIRECTOR; FREEDOM SHORE EXCURSION MANAGER
Subject: Museum, Rude Guides and Security – Cabins 6126, 7172, 1044.

The following cabins came to the desk and asked to speak to the cruise director. Purser asked what their concerns were and they explained that during the tour of the Acropolis the museum security guard shouted at the children because they were making to much noise. Guest from cabin 6126 – Kennedy, said that the guard screamed in the face of their 8-year-old child causing him to cry. Mr. Kennedy confronted the guard and was told “You Americans think you rule the world.” This was witnessed by the other cabins 7122 and 1044. Purser told the guests that this would be documented and the message passed on to the Cruise Director. Purser apologized and guests left the desk. Talked to Cruise Director. – 1065.

I wish this was the first time I had heard this sort of thing. I have witnessed it myself. Today, I just went outside to the terminal to see the flow of guests etc and to buy a British newspaper. I gave the man a five Euro note for a paper that cost 3 euros. He took the money, gave me my paper. I stood, waiting for the change and ……….nothing. I said “you owe me 2 Euro” and he just shrugged his shoulders, said something in Greek and served someone else.

Anyway, there have been a lot of incidents similar to the guest’s story above. There is no doubt that this is a beautiful country and Athens is a must visit destination and the majority of people are wonderful but boy oh boy some of them really do need a hospitality class ……………now.

It was hot today as well which probably didn’t help people’s tempers but there were many happy faces after experiencing the Acropolis of Athens. I want to share this with you, it is a list of places that was sent to me by Mrs. Mary Strutt who is sailing this cruise and has now crossed the Acropolis of her must see list. I asked her for her others and this is what she wants to see before……..well………..you know.

THE ACROPOLIS IN ATHENS

THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA

NIAGARA FALLS

THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA

THE EIFFEL TOWER

BUCKINGHAM PALACE

MACCHU PICCHU – PERU

JOHN HEALD DRIVING AN ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH

OK, I made the last one up but the rest of the list is pretty impressive and she is so excited to have seen two of her list this cruise. Good luck to Mary and I wonder, what’s on your list?

You will be happy to know that the Lloyds Inspectors were very happy when they left and the words “flying colours” were used to describe how we did so everyone is very happy here.

Just one last note about my Turkish bath experience. Alan Adkins and I have promised never to speak of this again but we do feel that we should warn you about the excess water thing………both of us are wearing Depends.

Here are some photos which I hope you enjoy.

I WILL ALSO BE INCLUDING SOME PHOTOS THAT SHAWN ON THE CARNIVAL SPIRIT IS SENDING ME FROM ALASKA - HERE IS THE ONE FOR TODAY

I THINK EVERYONE NOW WANTS TO CALL AND BOOK THE Carnival Spirit – HEY – HOW ABOUT A BLOGGERS CRUISE THERE IN 2009 – ANYONE INTERESTED?

And so to today’s “In Their Own Words.”

In Their Own Words

In Their Own Words

In Their Own Words

In Their Own Words
In Their Own Words

Here are today’s questions and answers and comments section which are taken from the blog titled “Highlighting the Celebration and Cruise Director Lenny Halliday.”

BRYANT – Thank you very much for congratulating me on my 20 years. It doesn’t feel like 20 years until I look at old photos of myself, still, I am twice the man I used to be. You asked for a photo and a picture of the tender lobby on Deck 0 where guests enter. Heidi will take this tomorrow morning. I have to say, I have never been asked for a photo of this part of the ship before, but I am happy to oblige. All the best and look out for your photo. If any other bloggers have photo request outside of the secure areas of the vessel, please let me know and I see what I can do.
FRANK C – Thank you Frank, we are all very proud to have passed our Lloyd’s Inspection. It should be a comfort to all the guests who sail on Carnival ships to know that their safety is in good hands. Thanks for giving me the chance to acknowledge this. You are Foxtrot Alpha November Tango Alpha Sierra Tango India Charlie.
LINDA HERNACKI – Hello Linda & Mike. How was your weekend? I am glad you enjoyed the story about the Carnival Leg End, it really was a haunting experience. You asked for a photo of Heidi and I of the early years. I will see what I can dig out. It’s wonderful to hear that you are still enjoying the blog. Have a great day.
JAMES NOLAN – It does seem a long time ago since we met on the Carnival Freedom. I am sure there must be days when you are very scared but the thoughts and prayers of all the thousands of blog readers are with you and everyone else serving their countries in Iraq. If there is anything we can do to make easier over there such as mail, photos or just a note to say HI, please let us know. All the best mate.
HEIDI-BETH AND KEVIN AND THE 7 PIXELS – I want to start with agreeing what you just said “A safe ship is a Fun Ship.” More than anything, that is what we strive to be. It was interesting reading about your friend who just cruised with Costa. In the days to come I will be proudly slapping on an interview with somebody from our dynamic sister company. I hope you enjoyed reading the one from Stein on behalf of Holland America Line. I am glad you are enjoying the Cruise Director interviews and Kid’s Corner. Heidi and I love kids and as you will read later in this blog we try and do what we can for those in need. Talking of kids. How are your seven?
We send our best to all of them and of course to the three of you.
BIG ED – Ed, your applications for Cruise Director has already been submitted and accepted and you have been officially nominated as the Bloggers Undisputed Special Teacher and you will therefore be called Big Bust and will be responsible teaching others how to run your own blog. You asked how Alan is, he is having a great time and Heidi will be taking another photo of him tomorrow. I never did ask. How did you persuade Mrs. Big Ed?
MARK TWAIN AND A HALF – I have been speaking to Feng Shui Turtle a lot this cruise and we have been having a lot of fun, even though up till now she doesn’t have her luggage. I hope she is coming on the bloggers cruise and if you look at the letter from the “In their own words” section you will see a note from her and that Heidi has been looking after her with various hair products. I can imagine asking a Lloyd’s underwriter to insure my two typing fingers. They must be worth at least $5 each. It’s interesting to hear that the cooking thing I mentioned from the back of trucks that we saw in Newfoundland is also popular in America at football games. I never knew this and maybe it is something I can start back in the U.K. Heidi can serve Fish & Chips out of the back of my Aston Martin………..is that the same thing?
Hope you and your other half are well and are enjoying the blog thingy.
DWA76 – Hello mate. You are right, the times I had with Michael Andrew were some of the best times I ever had on stage. He is a massive talent and I am sure he will go on to great things. Thank you for all your lovely comments and I am sorry to report it’s too late. ……….I drove Heidi crazy years ago. All the best mate.
ALAN & CHRIS – I remember when Heidi and I were there, it seemed that the entire city was under construction, but we had a wonderful time and especially loved Quincy Market. Please say a big thank you to Chris for mentioning the blog and I am very grateful for you kind words of congratulations. You will be here soon and I see that you are thinking of booking excursions. I suggest that you wait until you are on board, come to my Travel Talks and then you can decide what you want to do. If you have any questions, please let me know before you sail or see me or Heidi during the cruise. As far as the Supper Club reservation, you can tell me when and at what time as soon as you would like and I will make a reservation for you. See you in September; I will be the one wearing Red Socks.
LUV CRUISIN – I hope you are not suffering from ATCOCS syndrome. Some of the early signs of this are eating six meals a day which you have other people cook for you and sitting down in your living room expecting your husband to perform a review show wearing feathers and a g-string. I suggest you keep reading this blog, it maybe your only way of surviving until your next cruise. See you in 246 days.
SOUTHERN DREAMS – Interesting to hear that you did not enjoy the comedians on Costa Cruises. Comedy is the hardest thing to translate, something I have found out again this cruise. (NO I AM NOT WHINING). I am glad your friends have now found happiness and contentment here at Carnival Cruise Lines. All the best to you and the Prince.
LFTTNSFCF……………I really appreciate your understanding that every now and then I may not be able to answer every comment and question. However, this will be a rare occurrence as I know how important this is to so many people. Just the fact that you understand makes me feel understood. However, let me also say that I will always be here as and when people need advice or help.
JO MYERLY – Too late, I responded :) )
NANETTEALI – I love the children’s drawings and they really bring a smile to my face. I knew you would enjoy the photo of me and Michael Andrew, I actually thought of you when I slapped it on. Grasyarse me amiga. ……mucho huggo….
SHERIFF ROSCO P. COLTRANE – You asked about the replies that you make and that some of them are awaiting moderation. Actually, I have no idea what this means and I will refer to my good friend ROBERTO to answer for you. I do know that I read how you caught and arrested that terrible man who did terrible things and that night more than ever I was proud to call you my friend. Please stay safe.
TOM AND JANE – A classic Cruise Director joke, thank you for sharing it with us all. Here is another. Over the PA system. “This message is for the man who lost his gold Rolex watch…….I am happy to tell you……the time is 7:30pm.” Thanks to your both and thanks for reading the blog thingy and voting for me. I appreciate it so very much.
BRYAN – I am glad you enjoy hearing about the planning for the Welcome Aboard Show. I have learned over the years that it’s always best to have a plan A and plan B in your pocket. If you have any other questions please let me know. Until then, Cheers mate.
JENN – You asked who the Cruise Director was on the Carnival Inspiration on April 27 1997. I know you want this name for your scrapbook and I am now going to ask CHRIS PRIDEAUX to look in the archives to see who indeed this was. I will advise you shortly.
Thank you for saying I am your favorite CD, you are too kind. All the best.
TERRI 910 – I am glad you are enjoying the photos and I certainly looked very young back then. How kind of you to say that I may have been the reason that you and Larry are hooked on cruising. Thanks also for saying how much you enjoyed our Scouser’s interview. Lenny is a terrific guy and like you, is a huge lover of everything Beatles. Heidi sends her best to you and I think there may be a surprise, show wise, for you on the Carnival Splendor.
POPCORNGAL – Thank you for your congratulations and congratulations to you on receiving your blog thingy t-shirt. It will be interesting to see the reaction you receive when you wear it on the Carnival Miracle. I am very humbled that you bought one and I thank you so much for reading the blog as much as you do.
KEVIN – You mentioned a big congratulations to PA 007 who can indeed find out things no one else can. I will do my best to help you, so once an again, just let me know exactly what it is you would like to do. Everybody here will support you and I see so many people, myself included, think you are a terrific guy……..and not just because you got an Aston Martin.
MEDCRUISER – Thank you very much for saying my Travel Adventure Talks were so helpful during your recent cruise. Compared to ones in the Caribbean, these talks are very much more involved and I have to thank Heidi for helping me write them. I agree with you 100% the Lerici and Portovenere tour is incomparable and I am glad I set this one up. The problem is, everybody wants to see Pisa, which is understandable but for the folks who return to this area, like you, I strongly recommend this tour. I will purchase a tour book for you from this area on Wednesday when we go and let me know a mailing address and I will send it to you. Wishing you a great evening and let me know the address. Thank you for saying my sister is a knock out. She is not bad, even though she is the ugly one of the family.
SHARON AND JEFF – I am interested to learn how much luggage you will be taking for your 49-day Carnival Splendor Cruise. Are you hiring a barge for us to tow behind? I am really excited that you are excited about this cruise and hopefully I will be able to confirm soon that I will be there with you.
DOUG – Welcome to the blog. I see that you only just discovered this world of cruise fun and how wonderful to hear that you are sitting in the gorgeous town of St. John’s Newfoundland. THE NARROWS…that’s right. Thank you for telling me the name of the entrance to the port and reminding me also that that was where Marconi sent his first ever-wireless signal from. I will indeed interview a Navigational Officer in the days to come, so look out for that on this blog thingy. My best regards to everybody in your part of the world, you are very lucky to live there.
KATHIE – Thank you for the anniversary wishes. I am sorry to hear that you have not been well. I am very sad to hear this news and we all hope that you are on the road to recovery. It seems that some messages do not get through to me and this may just be cyberspace madness which I know Roberto will be looking into. Anyway, most importantly, get better and Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane and I will be thinking of you.
SHELLY P – Well, you will be here soon and unfortunately you will have to bring your own double bass :) ) You and the boys are about to have the vacation of a lifetime and I am honored to be sharing it with you. Travel safely.
SHELAGH INGLEDOW – Welcome to the blog and thank you for the brilliant recommendation to see the Within Reach Internet Café. I told some of my staff about this and they went there today and already they are raving about it. They loved the price of the internet and I see that you offer wonderful things for the crew. I will come over myself next time and introduce Heidi and I to you. Thank you for everything you do and we enjoyed a wonderful day in Greece. I just wish they were all as friendly as you.

That’s all for the Q & A for today…………………much more tomorrow.

Here is today’s Guest Interview featuring another of my colleagues and great friends Mr. Steve Cassel onboard the Holiday. Steve is an awesome violinist, a brilliant juggler and totally unique as a cruise Director.

Here is his interview.

Steve Cassel

Steve Cassel

1. Please can you tell us about your career with Carnival so far? How did you start and when?

I started back in 1986 when Carnival hired me as a juggler. I’d worked all over the world with my juggling act and was currently in a revue show in Lake Tahoe called “Body Language.” I started on the Tropicale, and in a year was given the cruise director position. This is so much fun I’ve never looked back!

2. What ship are you currently on and what is its itinerary?

I’m currently on the happy Holiday sailing out of Mobile, Alabama. We sail to Cozumel every cruise, and on the alternating 5-day cruises, we also hit Costa Maya and Calica / Playa del Carmen. People from the South are just about the nicest people I’ve ever run across. They’re friendly, enjoy life to its fullest, and there’s a natural warmth with Southerners that is very addicting.

3.Please can you pick two excursions from each port and tell us why you recommend them so much?

My favorite port is Cozumel, and if you want to get out and really see it, the highlights and shopping tour is perfect. It’s a great combination of two popular reasons to visit exotic ports of call. Next would be the dolphin swim. They’re inquisitive, friendly, curious and intelligent. The third of the two would be getting to know turtles. There’s the Grand Cayman Turtle Farm, Swimming with Turtles in Playa del Carmen, and a few others. I think God was in a rather unusual mood when he made the turtle, and I believe there’s more to them than meets the eye.

4. What are your favorite activities or events that you host and why?

I enjoy the Newlywed, not-so-newlywed game. I end up interpreting quite a few answers, though. It’s amazing to me what people actually write sometimes! I enjoy the Talent Show as well. No matter what happens, it’s always fun to see people perform.

5. Fill in the blank please……………..People should sail on the HOLIDAY because it’s just about the friendliest environment around. You feel at home instantly, and your cruise vacation experience will be so much fun, you’ll start planning your next one before you leave. We make sure of it!

6. What do you enjoy most about being a Cruise Director?

My favorite part is performing. I was hired as a professional juggler and I enjoy that immensely. But all through school I was planning to be a concert violinist. I would practice 4 hours a day, had private lessons, but decided at one point that I didn’t want to dress like a penguin for the rest of my life and sought to broaden my horizons. Performing on cruise ships gives me the opportunity to do it all. We have a production revue show called “X-treme Country” on the Holiday, where I get to play Country Fiddle throughout the show, featuring Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Orange Blossom Special, and The Devil Went Down to Georgia among others. What fun! My mother wanted me to play violin (in the worst way) and my dad wanted me to play fiddle, so to keep everybody happy, I learned both.

7. Share your favorite story with us that involve our guests and your job?

There are hundreds, but my favorite has to be the elevator incident. I was walking around the Ecstasy with Ron Ness, Hotel Director when we spotted three elderly ladies staring straight up. They were at the main elevator, not moving, seemingly entranced with something. On the Ecstasy atop the main forward elevators, there’s a light that marks the floor that the elevator is currently on, arranged in a semicircle above the doors. They were staring at these lights. As Ron and I approached, the lady on the left, obviously quite upset, piped up: “Well, how do they expect us to press these buttons?” That was at least 12 years ago, but it’s still one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

8. List your three favorite ports you have visited?

Cozumel, St. Thomas and Grand Cayman.

9. Name three ports you would really like to see that you have never been to?

I’d like to do the Alaska run, everyone says it’s absolutely beautiful.

10. Finally, if you could introduce on stage any star, alive or not who would it be and why?

If I could introduce anyone onstage, it would be the Italian violinist Niccolo Paganini, held by many as the greatest and most innovative virtuoso of all time. He played a Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu. He could make it sing, he could make it weep, and left his audiences gasping. In Paganini’s hands, the violin became a living, breathing thing. I’d love to be in the same room with someone who possesses that kind of gift.

Thanks Steve and I am sure the good folks of Alabama are enjoying having the Holiday in Mobile and the guests onboard I know enjoy your multitude of talents.

I wanted to talk to you now about a great friend of ours. Her name is Rebecca and she is a Special Needs teacher in Oxnard, California. She sailed with us on the Carnival Liberty and we gave her a trophy to show the children. Before she came on this cruise she had her entire class draw me pictures in a hope that one of them would win a trophy for being “the smartest kid in the class”

There were a total of 15 kids who wanted to win and 15 fantastic pictures and letters. Here are all 15…………….YES……………all 15…………….I though it would be nice for them to see their drawings and letters being read by thousands of people.

    Hi John,

Just a quick note to say I loved those kids’ letters and you’re right, they all should get their trophies & medallions. Good work.

How sad that people have to be so rude! But that’s the way the world is now – they don’t like Americans (or the British) but certainly enjoy everything we give them. As bad a rap as New Yorkers always get, I don’t think you would find that here – either the newspaper vendor or the security guard in a museum.

    Have a good evening,
    Carol

Hi John. Thank you for the very kind words. It has been at least 100 degrees (40c) here the past 5 days. People do not act or drive right when it is that hot. My deputies and I have been working extremely hard keeping the peace.

Nikki and I are getting ready to plan our cruise for next year. What ship will you be on? I think I remember you saying you were going to do Europe on the Splendor.

Here is a website that I hope my deputies and I will never be on….it’s http://www.odmp.org. It even has a UK page.

Remember…keep the bottom side of the boat in the water!!

    Handcuffs and cigars to all!

  • A guest had a problem with a Greek

It’s happening almost every day of the week

For social skills some don’t have the best technique

All they want is for your to buy from their boutique

To travel the bazaar is not for the meek

Be careful if you stick your head in for a peek

Cause they Greeks they don’t turn the other cheek

But here’s a trick if you can sneak

When they are rude and you are feeling weak

You can always go over to their tent and just take a leak!!!!

  • Hi John,
Nate saw that I was reading the blog and asked me to say hello to you and Heidi (and of course all of the girls). He is heading out in a couple of days to San Diego to board the Elation (a ship he sailed with in the Caribbean as well). He will be visiting Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, (both new ports for him). He is pretty excited and is hopeful that he will reunite with people he has met on various other ships. It is always exciting to see “who’s onboard”! What a great life he is having with Carnival…..23 years old and has gotten to see so much! Say hello to all on his behalf!

  • Great interview and I loved the Smartest Kids contest! I am glad that you had a price for all of them – they deserve it!
To your question on next Bloggers Cruise: I have heard how beautiful Alaska is, but for me it would be possible only in summer. Cleveland is already cold half of the year and I would like to warm up on my vacation….Brrrrr.

  • A Bloggers cruise to Alaska what a great idea John! When you visit Juneau we could have a picnic in my backyard on the way back from the Mendenhall Glacier…………….I’m sure the neighbors would love a big tour bus parked on our little street.

  • Hi John

Just a line to say how much I enjoyed my brief visit to the Freedom, as before I enjoyed the shows and hope all went well. One day we will meet, it’s like being one of Charlies Angels when I come on baord, I see you on the tv I hear you on the PA and then I get calls back stage….you are the voice!!
I hope the rest of the summer season goes well and I hope to work with you again some time soon.
    All the very best

    Jeff

  • John, thanks for the well wishes, and leave it to you to focus on my health! Feeling much better now that I can focus on reading and have caught up on the blog. The children really touch my heart. I love to hear the stories and see the pictures! Your idea of raising money on the Blogger’s cruise for the children charity is awesome. You were very quick to think on your feet regarding Jess and her parents. Thanks for sharing that story. It made me reflect on the Greek Security guards yelling at a child and your gesture. We have two distinct forces working in this world….Yesterday I booked our flights to Miami for the Blogger’s cruise! Jeff found out at the movies and started throwing popcorn at us! had to promise to take him on a cruise this summer. when you have time, tell us your favorite things to do in the ports we will be visiting? I know that this bloggy thing takes a dreadful amount of time…Sorry to write so much. But it’s your fault! You are always in our thoughts, and we look forward to seeing you. Now that I am well, I’ll get you those jelly beans! and Heidi some room freshener! It can be an anniversary gift!

What I am interested in seeing John, is some of the crew areas and the kitchen (kitchen tour canceled when I went) Do you think you could post some of what goes on behind the scenes? Thanks

  • Hi John…

I just wanted to say that I am extremely happy with how welcoming you are to special needs children. I am a speech-language pathologist and work with preschool aged special needs children daily. I loved the drawings and letters drawn by the children from California.

I also loved your comment made on the July 24th cruise to a mother who left a child with special needs at home which encouraged her to bring the child on the next trip. It is nice to know that Carnival has people onboard who have a knowledge of special needs. I commend you and Carnival for this.

  • Im interested on a bloggers cruise to Alaska!! Never been there and it is at top of the list for must sees and 2009 would be the perfect time. The Holiday was my first funship and one of my favorite because it was our first Carnival and our first “big and new” ship after our cruises on board the Carla Costa and Amerikanis that was in 1990. Later we returned with my husband family (a group of 40) on 2001, we also enjoy it very much. Its a special ship for us.Congratulations(Felicidades!!!!!) to all this smart kids and to their teacher who is making a great job They all seem to have a great self steem and thats what they need to suceed. Well done teacher!

I went to Athens, Greece about a year ago and I totally agree that the people there are not very nice at all, they seem to be very cold impersonable people. We did find an exception, there was this cute little resturant across the street from our hotel and the owner’s name is Alex and he was such a wonderful man. He gave us a tour of his resturant and we had never had greek food before and he was bringing out all kinds of delicious food for us to try and he only charged us for what we ordered, we would have gladly paid for all the food he gave us but he wouldn’t hear of it. He made us feel like family, it is sad that the rest of the Greek people there don’t take his example. It is an awesome country to visit. I loved the kids letters they made me smile. Don’t feel that you have to comment on this because I totally understand that you are a busy man, I just wanted to share my experience in Greece. I loved Turkey though. You and Heidi have a wonderful day!

  • Hello John,

You are right, all of those kids are winners. What a great way to inspire the children to do their best! I enjoyed reading their letters. You really know how to keep the blog fresh and upbeat. It is such a pleasure to read each issue. The boys come running when they hear me chuckle.
Andrew has started to pack up his double bass but as it won’t fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat of the airplane ( my boy scouts are planning only carry-ons for three weeks in Europe), his dad is making him leave it home. If he brought it along, imagine the angry notes you’d receive because I’d make him practice in our stateroom every day!

P.S.: Andrew is a car buff and can appreciate your taste in finer automobiles. Personally, he is partial to the Ferrari F-40.

  • Hi John, What rude jerks those Greeks are. Did you ever get your change for the newspaper? I would have grabbed something else to make up for the difference he did not give you back in change! NO John, please don’t do an Alaskian bloggers cruise, I WILL NOT fly anywhere to catch a cruise, it has to be out of Florida, and remember Big Ed’s wife Pat doesn’t fly either! How about a cruise to include Panama, the last time we were there Mike and I took a ferry thru the locks and it was absolutely breathtaking! Or somewhere in Jamaica would also be nice. Wish Carnival would sail to Montego Bay, we loved it when we were there, (we went there because we couldn’t dock at Ocho Rios due to another cruise ship damaging the dock). Yes, can’t wait to see pix of you and Heidi from the “early years”! Have a nice night! Linda & Mike (handy-dandy man)

  • It is imposible to reunite you and Michell Andrew again? I would pay to see that!! Maybe for the second bloggers cruise, not this one because I cant go and you would made me do something drastic :)

  • Greeks do not like Americans a whole lot, but it is always worse when you are in a large crowd in any country. I love cruising, but it is hard to shake the large crowd issue when cruising. None the less a Med cruise seems pretty enticing to me, there are always issues no matter how you travel.

Athens is on of the worst cities in Europe IMO. But conversely it is wonderful for a cruise. The Acropolis is wonderful and you do not have to spend extra time in Athens.

Smaller Greek cities are nicer and friendlier which can be said for most countries.

  • Dear John & Heidi
Not sure if my last comment got lost… but I got my Tshirt-love John’s Blog Thingy… and eagerly awaiting my documents for my cruise on the 29th of this month. The pictures are great and the interviews very interesting. Hope you win, we all voted for you. The blog just gets better and the kid’s corner is darling. Be ready for some sugar free jelly beans- you deserve them and hopefully Heidi won’t be too mad. Oust to the rescue. See you soon

  • John;

When we were on the ship in May we had a group of very rude little people on board (not Children) from someplace I couldn’t identify. Since then I have heard or read of rude people from Greece, Italy, Canada, Russia and the US. I guess like Super Chicken, there everywhere. All we can do is try not to be like them.

I agree with you, it looks like you have 15 winners this time.

I am still pulling for CZJ for God mother however have you ever considered someone a bit more mature say Judi Dench?

  • The “Ugly” American’s…ha!

Well John, I sure hope you got your 2 Euro’s back!
Being respectful of another person’s country is one thing, getting the ” ancient royal wiener” is another!

  • Hey John,

Nice act of awarding all 15 students the award of smartest student in class.

Seems like a lot of the cruise directors all seem to at least mention the Newlywed, not-so-Newlywed Show as one of their favorite activities onboard the ships. Heh, love how everyone, from guests to the cruise directors, all love the show.

  • Hey John,

    Adios for now.

  • Hi John,

Congratulations on the pyrotechnics audit. There was another fire in Warwick, Rhode Island several years ago where a rock group’s pyrotechnics set the sound proofing material on fire. There were 100 people who lost their lives that night. New England is still devestated.

I have made supper club reservations online for Sept 16th at 6:30 for 8 guests. Is it possible for you to confirm this? I also would like reservations for 2 for the night we leave Venice, also at 6:30.

We will be listening to your Travel Talks and rely heavily on your advice (no pressure) about excursions. We look forward to meeting you and I too will be dressed in Red Sox (spelled correctly) attire.

    Talk with you soon.

  • Hi Elizabeth Tucker:
Years ago we had the great fortune to enjoy a Cruise on The Best Ship Ever The Carnival Smoke Free Paradise at Halloween.
I brought a Butterfly cape and put my new Del Sol Butterfly clips all over my head like a deranged punky teenager. He wore his new Orange Caribbean shirt and called himself a Parrothead.
There were people who brought the MOST FABULOUS costumes. My favorite were the ladies in black: They didn’t go Witch, they had these fabulous wings! There was a considerable costume parade. On the one hand, it may have only been 10% of the guests who got decked out, but it was the Best 10%.
I’ve been working on a Frost Fairy outfit for the past several years (I discovered too late that the portable battery powered lights were too heavy, boo hoo) but I still haven’t figured out what he should be to go along but not too cutesy.
I’m not sure how we should take your Mr. telling you you don’t need to bother about a costume. Is he going to buy you one of those fabulous things from a Rome Costume Shop? Or is he saying something that should put him on John’s DogHouse Floor?
Bring your smallest or lightest or favorite, we shall pass each other in the hall and have a grand time.
Well, I won’t be bringing my smallest, just because you can still get into it doesn’t mean you should wear it out in public.
    Trick or Treat!

  • What happenedwith the Greek tour is not just in Greece, and we have had our share of stories and even rude tour guides. I refuse to let their assumptions ruin my vacation because they really do not know who I am just becaue I am an American tourist. We had one tour guide that made sure she told the whole group what whe thought of Americans that came to her island… and she was not happy. The odd part is she also said how hard thing were before the tour industry came to the island too….. Anyway I could go on but I also remeber a taxi driver in Cozumel that was great, spoke great English and was very friendly, he did all he could to go to the out of the way places that were so nice and just made the day relaxing to have someone who looked like he liked his job. This is the guides we remember first and try not to dwell on the other few.

The letter from the children are so sweet, and what they wrote say a lot about their talented teacher. Each child should have a prize for what they did, they should all be proud of their good work.

As we are heading out in 26 days we will not be on the bloggers cruise this time but hope we can agange the to make the next on. However as wonderful as Alaska sounds that trip is still out for a while. May be when we don’t have to pay for all the little pixles… or at least when it will be just the 2 of us. How does a nice Western Caribbian out of Tampa or Port Canaveral (*hint those ports are each only 2 hours away from us) :D
(any ship is a good ship with Carnival) and why wait a whole year how about in December the first of second week would be great.

Sending all our best to you and Heidi

the one and only 1 :)

  • Jeff here John.
Sharon will only be allowed her one large suitcase and a carry on, for the 49 night Splendor cruise to South America and around the Horn. This is far less luggage than we dragged along for 15 nights with you on the Carnival Leg End in 2002. With so many sea days I am sure we can find time to use the self serve laundry a few times.

Speaking of which, I read your comments on the rudeness you encountered in Greece, I think you made a similar comment on our stop in Le Harve in 2002. I wonder who takes the “prize” so to speak. hehe!

Keep up the great work you are incredible and one of a kind.

  • Hi John
Thanks so much for that Supper Club Reservation!! We are so looking forward to our cruise on the Freedom. We just returned from the Pride and had a great time there. I have a message from Jeff Brrronson…he says hi and “He’s the Guest”. He said you will understand. See ya in October on the Freedom!!

    Dear Mrs.missingthesmokefreeparadise -

I can go as a cruise ship passenger on vacation :)

I could go as a glass pane, but you would see right through me (insert collective groan here).

    > However, let me also say that I will always be here as and when people need advice or help.

Well, I could use your advice here – I thought my Parrothead costume was a stroke of genius.

If I came as an Iceberg, would I get thrown overboard?

He who has no idea what he is going to be for Halloween

  • John, as I said before Alaska Is out. It looks great but I’m not leaving Michigan in the summer to go see ice and snow. We take all our cruise in the winter to leave the ice and snow of Michigan and go to the land of sun.

On April 4, 07 in my blog we started asking for the next bloggers cruise to be on January 24, 2009 on the Splendor. The last cruise before the big 49 days cruise. It would give you your Nov, Dec, Jan vacation break and get you back on the Splendor in time to do the BIG one around the horn. Now that’s long term thinking.
    http://ekonefe.wordpress.com/2007/04/30/carnival-splendor-bloggers-cruise-january-24-2009/

You asked how I got Pat to do the Bloggers Cruise. When I told her we would still do our anniversary cruise by doing a back to back. It was not a either or thing. So It’s a BTB with you filling in the time I WAS going to be in the casino gambling. I have not told her yet that she will get a tan on this cruise since she won’t be going to the casino either. Our friends always ask us when we get home from a cruise “were are your tans”? We just say there is no sun in the casino. Pat wanted me to ask Heidi if the SPA had any type of tanning, like the new spray on ones. But she won’t need that with all the time she will have on the BTB on the Lido deck. OH NO, you don’t have the horse races on the Lido deck do you. She was a horse owner on one of our cruises Thank God she won the race and the owners pool money.

    After reJohn
After reading your Turkish Bath episode I have total empathy with you . I had a similar situation happen to me with a Hotsi Bath IN Sasebo Japan several Years ago when I was in the Navy. We docked in Japan got off the ship and stopped in a store and wanted a six pack of beers and little did I know that the bottles of Asahi beers were the size of wine bottles. I managed to drink down three to get to a stage of inebriation and managed to walk myself to a Hotsi bath. I had never had one before so my buddy and I walked up a rather steep hill of 140 steps which was very difficult in my condition .First thing they did in the hotsi bath is strip you down to your birthday suit, I was very embarrassed and naive being from the south. They placed me in a steam cabinet and turned it on, where the female attendant turned it on and said she would be back in a couple of minutes. Well everything I had was burning, I started screaming at her to “turn this thing down”. She said in her broken english, “OK I turn it down”. I told her Ok if you can turn it down, you can turn it off because I am roasting in here”, So she took me out of the cabinet and placed me on a little wooden stool and threw a bucket of Ice water on me.She took a cloth which felt like it was made out of brillo/scouring OR had “rocks” knitted into in and proceeded to remove the first layer of my skin. Then after the scrubbing she took me and stuck me in a boiling vat of water. I never felt so abused in my life! After 15-20 minutes of boiling she removed my wrinkled carcass from the vat and gave me a massage where she a woman of about 140 lbs. walked all over my back and gave me Akadama (plum wine). After that 90 minute ordeal I was as sober as a judge. However if that wasn’t Hades I don’t know what was!. Looking forward to our second transatlantic cruise where we can cry about our similar bathes /beatings in October!

  • John,
Wow, that is some story about the people in Greece acting like a bunch of moronic people. I hope you did get your 2 euro’s back. Great pictures by the kids. You asked what I am looking to do, well right now my official title is Executive Chef / General Manager. So basically I would be happy as a dining room manager, or maybe even something in the cruise staff department. Helping people have fun, has always been something I’ve enjoyed. Please let me know if there is anything you can do to help me along in the process. Thanks once again for all your help and guidance.

    Hi John!
Love the kids corner. How generous of you and Heidi to send trophies, medallions and photos to all 15 kids! They all did such a great job of letter writing and the pictures are wonderful.

Alaska for a bloggers cruise would be great!!! We did the “Inside Passage” on Princess in May of 2004 and have been hooked on Cruising since. Can’t wait to go back. It’s easy to see why people move to Alaska… the only way I can describe it is: “It’s like seeing All 4 seasons at one time!” Not to mention that Skagway and Ketchikan are kind of like walking back into the old west… just a little modernized. Carl even got me on a Helicopter (I was scared to death… I’m afraid of heights) in Juneau and we walked on a Glacier… It was truley the high light of the whole cruise. I want to do it again!!! We also rode the train, down the “White Pass trail” and that was an unbelievable experience, too. So much history and the people in Alaska are by far the friendliest I’ve met on any cruise! Alaska is a must see, excuse me, a must experience for anyone and everyone! My vote for 2009 bloggers cruise will be for Alaska!

  • John,
I wanted to know if the photo service will download passengers photos they take ashore onto a disc? If not I will need to purchase additional memory cards.
P.S. Loved the Turkish Bath story. I read it after a rotten day and it really made me laugh.

  • Hi John
WOW 20 years! Congrats! that is awesome.
I want to say thanks for sharing the pictures, even though I cannot be there it is the next best thing. So far, I would have to say, my favorite one is the greek sunset. Breathtakingly beautiful!
The picture from The Carnival Spirit is great, since I will be on it in Sept of ‘08 with all my husbands family.
Thank you again for the pictures and for all the many smiles you have produced.
    Shelee
P.S. How are the “depends” holding up? I would go and get you some more but….. I am sure that would be the time that an important person in my life would be behind me (ie: boss, mother-in-law) and trying to explain what was going on… just picturing it all is making my face red and I did not even do it…..I am sorry I just could not do it.

  • Loved the childrens pictures & letters – I just knew they’d all get awarded a prize! Daughter Yvette lives in Piraeus & the 2 things she does not like in Greece are the traffic & the sometimes unhelpful shop assistants (just to prove the point)but she loves it there. Not all Greeks are rude (seems to be mainly public sector for some reason) & they can be the warmest, friendliest & most generous people. And they (usually!)love children. Maybe she ought to train as a tour guide there! Other daughter Paulette has got the Valor in October (thanks Miami as it was 1st choice!) She wanted a quick turnaround as she didn’t want to sell dental insurance again, do filing for the Probation Service or pack custard pies again! Looks like it’s going to be mainly a reunion of Liberty 1st cast dancers which is great. (A few familar names to you John!). So it’s glaciers to suntan lotion! The salmon are running at the moment & the weather’s good. Anyone hesitating – you must go to Alaska it’s a wonderful experience – there’s nothing like it.

    Hi Everyone,

Before I forget to mention it, tonight is America’s Got Talent on NBC. I don’t know if Jason made it into this last round or not, but if he has – please vote for him. Personally, I am a little tired of that so-called “Judge” putting down cruise ship singers whenever Jason is on. So if all us bloggers get out the vote, maybe we can do this. (Even though I really like the ventriloquist, but I’ll vote for Jason.

    Thanks everybody

  • What a joy to read all the letters from the children. Kids have a way of brightening just about any day. Bless you and Heidi for allowing each child to feel special by giving them all awards. By the way, only 151 days until we sail. (Still don’t know where my passport is – even though we applied in MARCH!!) We can’t wait. We are so excited, we are talking about booking our next one while on board. Thinking about a New Year’s Eve cruise next time around; complete with breakfast in bed (hang-over and all) the following morning! What could be better than celebrating a new year aboard a fantastic fun ship and having a bloody mary with breakfast the next morning? Keep up the good work!!!! This blog is the best!!!!

  • Queen Mary

Just heard on our local (LA) news that the Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, CA is on the auction block today for failure to pay rent to the City of Long Beach. Bidding starts at 43 mil. One bidder wants to make the Queen residential as well as commercial. She’s a Hotel at the present. Just as long as she stays where she is !!!! She’s a beautiful sight !
On Sunday docked right next to the QM, the Carnival Pride had a strange metal boat with several people near her bow. Divers were called in to check her hull. Nothing was found. This happened to us on Aug. 1, ‘04 on the Pride as well. A small boat got to close. Coast Guard complete with a rather large gun on their bow circled our ship until we left port.

It’s me again. Just wanted to add my 2 cents for the next blogger’s cruise. As much as I would like to see Alaska, that would not be my 1st (or 2nd or 3rd) choice. I’ll fly, but I don’t like it, especially a 5-hr. flight for me from NY, and it is more expensive, plus I’m a sun-person. I had thought I would book the Splendor when she comes to Florida to do the Caribbean cruises next fall – that would be great. Big Ed mentioned sailing in January for the bloggers, but since I once was almost snowed in before my cruise on the Triumph, I prefer earlier – November or early December before the holiday prices take effect. My other choices – May or June 2009 out of NY on the Miracle for the Caribbean (or whatever ship will be doing that itinerary at the time). Or, John, since the Imagination means so much to you and Heidi, why not the cruise I have booked for December. 5-days – Turks & Caicos, Half Moon Cay, Nassau. I wouldn’t mind a repeat itinerary. Oh, who cares – anything sounds good (except Alaska).

    Regards,
    Carol

Hi John, I have a couple of questions about the scrapbooks. Do you have them back in stock on the Carnival Freedom? Do they have name of the ship on the cover? Are they available on the other Carnival ships? Do you have any idea when they will be available on line?
We are sailing on the Carnival Freedom August 29, 2007. I would like to have a scrapbook with the Freedom, Liberty and maybe even the Leg End on the cover. I am wondering if I should wait to get on the ship to buy them or buy them online.
And you thought scrapping was just sticking photos on paper.
    Thanks for your help.

  • I have some pictures from a kitchen tour on Liberty here:

    { John was CD at the time }

  • What a wonderful, kind gesture that you and Heidi did for those kids. How special. I am sure you made their year by doing that.

I really enjoyed the interview with Steve Cassell. He was the last CD we had when we cruised out of Galveston. He definitely is a unique character and a joy to be around.

As far as the Greek comments, I noticed the same thing when i was there with my family 10-15 years ago. Seems like not much has changed. Its a real shame though that they treat some peole this way. Not everyone is perfect, but its not fair for everyone to be “lumped in together”.

    Have a good one!

John, BTBTBTB That’s what it would be for all us bloggers if we did the CARNIVAL SPLENDOR BLOGGERS CRUISE on January 24, 2009 and the around South America 3 part cruise. YES that is the date for the 2009 Bloggers Cruise. The list has been on my site since April. BOY! a 2 month Bloggers Cruise. Just think 2 months of ” HARDY & HARDY” we would be the talk of the cruise world. HOLLYWOOD here we come, ROTFLMAO. Now all I got to do is figure how to pay for it and get back home from Calif., train I guess.

FYI: Mrs. “BIG” ED said you and I have created a monster and the words BACK TO BACK have crossed her lips. (she just smiled when I read this comment to her)

  • Hi John,

8 days and counting (you did say to let you know when my cruise was about a week away… wink wink).

I started a list of things I’ve seen and would like to recently, and one that I hadn’t thought of was one of the most awe inspiring sights I’ve ever seen. At the risk of being a Carnival shill, the view of a live volcano at night from the ship is something I will never forget.

I must say that is the happiest turtle in the photo that I’ve ever seen. Someones having fun with Photoshop…. either that or the photo is of the rare laughing sea turtle ;) .

Nothing much new on the family front.

  • John,

Thank you for sharing the wonderful letters and pictures from 15 of the smartest children in the world. In the news we hear and read too much about young “thugs” and not enough about children such as these 15 who are working hard and the teachers who are guiding them to achieve their best.

Your Turkish bath experience made me howl with laughter – - not at your pain, but at your very descriptive way of telling about it. Ouch! I’m going to treat myself to a hot stone massage in the spa during the TA. I hope your spa personnel didn’t take lessons in Turkey!

    See you in 75 days.

    Sue

  • Good Morning John and Heidi!
I loved the pictures of the sunset in Greece. Those were absolutely magnificent.
O.K. I pulled in my driveway yesterday and there is a box against my garage door. I approcached the box with much anticipation. It was from the Victory Store! Since I had to pick up cold water and get my grandson from day care to football practice, I gently placed the box in my car. As soon as I got to his day care center, I had to open the box. I was sooooo excited. It was the blog thingy tee shirts. When I got back to the house, hubby was there. I showed him the shirts and he was really pleased! They were definately worth the wait.
John, I was truly touched by the letters from the children. Since I am in education, it was touching to see the comments from the individual students as well as your response to them. I am sure they will all be pleased with their recognition.
Thanks for keeping the blog thingy going!

  • John, thanks for sharing all 15 of the children’s letters. Larry & I live in Ventura County in southern California (that’s where Oxnard is located) and I work in Oxnard, not so very far from McAuliffe School. I especially liked Mark Anaya’s drawing of a genuine 24-carat gold plastic ship-on-a-stick!

Right next to Oxnard is Port Hueneme — I think that’s the only deep port between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the California coast. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one of Carnival’s ships (during a repositioning or something) could dock there for a day (A couple of cruise ships have made stops there before, but not Carnival, I don’t believe)….what a treat it would be for those children to visit a Carnival ship!

It is very nice of you to have sent something special for each of the children. What a wonderful ambassador for Carnival Cruise Lines you and Heidi are!

    Terri & Larry

  • Dear John
I enjoyed your writing about Cruise Director Steve Cassel. We just came back from a 5 cruise to Mexico on board the Holiday. Steve is the most remarkable man I have ever meet. He his also the single most talented person I have seen perform, he is a great comedian, plays the fiddle and violin like a dream, and top it off with the most exciting juggling act I have ever seen. You’ve heard of a one man band well that’s Steve, is there anything he can’t do? I could have spent the entire cruise in the Americana Lounge watching him perform. I am planning my return trip very soon just to see him and the rest of the quality staff of the Holiday. The ship older and smaller but the staff makes up for it in a really big way!
