Shimaila Batlawala - Spa Dept

Can you tell us how long you have been working for Carnival Cruise Lines? What year did you start and what is your current position? I started 2007 in August, and my current position is a hair stylist.

Where are you from and what is the best thing about living there?
I am From Vancouver B.C and the best thing about living there is the Whistler Ski resort (where 2010 Winter Olympics will be held) and snowboarding.

Are you married and tell us about your family?
I’m not married. I was born in Kenya, Nairobi. My mum originates from Tanzania and my Dad’s from Pakistan. I have 1 older sister and one younger brother. I moved to North America when I was 10 but was raised in Africa. My Mum is a Registered nurse and dad owns a jewels and antiques business.

What does your job involve. Describe what you do each day?
My job involves making people feel better about themselves by styling their hair and making them look as good as possible. My day-to-day duties involve one-on-one consultations and analyzing guest’s hair styles and giving them the best style possible. Also advising them on which products will help maintain there hair style. I help give a positive attitude in the salon to make the experience as enjoyable and relaxing as possible for each and every guest.

What is the best thing about working on a cruise ship?
Get to travel and see the world and meet all different types of people.

What is the hardest thing about working on a cruise ship?
Being away from your family for long periods of time.

Favorite things….
Food
Italian

Movie
My Father the Hero

Music
R&B

Way to relax
Sunbathing and relaxing by the pool…..back home is snowboarding

If you could do any other job on the ship for a day what would you like to do and why?
I’d like to be a Social Host for the day! – Its seems really upbeat and fun and I think it would be both exciting and challenging….I love a good challenge!

Favorite Port?
Venice – It’s amazing, I love the culture but more importantly for me it has great shopping!!!!!!!

If you could meet one famous person in the world who would it be and why?
Oprah Winfrey! Simply because she is just great and is a true example of someone who can go from nothing and make herself a millionaire. Also she is an excellent role model to millions.

  1. John, I need a haircut. Make me an appointment with Shimaila. Never mind Pat is coming with scissors in her hands but it’s not the hair on my head see is leering at. GOT TO GO SEE YOU.

    “BIG” ED
    Maybe not for long

  2. John, my husband and I are trying to decide which night to reserve at the supper club. Can you tell me which nights will formal nights be on? We are on the Oct.28th transatlantic. Also, I will be able to give you a list of Cruise Critic members on this sailing. You told me in answer to an earlier question I posted that you would help arrange a meet-n-greet or two. When do I need to get you the list and by what means. Thanks for all you do. We grow more excited by the day!

  3. John, so sad to see Big ED has moved on to a higher plane. He should be arriving in about 12 hours.I will take Big ED’s appointment in seeing he no longer needs a haircut (maybe forever). Thanks Kevin

  4. Wow, Shimaila’s interview really illustrates how Carnival is helping to bring the world closer – A Canadian, born in Kenya to a Tanzanian mother and a Pakistani father, helping people explore the Mediterranean! And she is lovely! Hmmm, I think I just might “forget” to get my hair cut before the blogger’s cruise. :-)

Only thing is, everytime I think of Carnival’s spas, I remember my very first cruise where my friends and I took a tour of the spa on the Ecstasy. This was back when a big fad was a technique called “Endermologie” (I think) where they would use a kind of corrugated rolling pin on whichever body part was considered to be a bit too “extra medium size”. The theory was that the rolling pin would break up the fat tissues and the body would simply flush it away. I think Fatima invented it. So, on this tour the spa lady holds up this little stainless steel handle with a roller on it about one inch wide and about a half inch in diameter, and she told us (with a totally straight face) how she could roll away our excess flab with this little thing! So from that day on, whenever I think of the spa ladies, I picture them slaving away, rolling that little tool over hundreds of buffet-enhanced bodies. I sure hope they don’t have to do that these days!

  5. Wish she could teach me how to snowboard.
    Talk about something embarassing…

  6. Great interview with the Spa lady… I’m totally addicted to the spa products! guys, these spas are A-#1 class and the products are primo! My fave? the massage oils… they have so many different uses.

Glad to see you feeling better, my dear.
