Highlighting Accountant Karen Langford 1. Can you tell us how long you have been working for Carnival Cruise Lines? What year did you start and what is your current position?
I have been working for Carnival 10 years in June. I started in 1997 and my current position is First Accountant

2. Where are you from and what is the best thing about living there?
I am from Dominica and the best thing is the tranquility and the cleanliness and greenery. Also the people are fun and really know how to have a good time. They take life easy and one day at a time.

3. Are you married and tell us about some of your family?
Married for five years and my husband works for Carnival. I have three siblings – all girls – they are looked after by my Mum. I am here so I can give them a better life.

4. What does your job involve? Describe what you do each day.
We cut the day off and balance the revenue for the different departments. We support the Pursers a lot because we make sure the business side of the work is done and they handle the guest relations side. We balance accounts and inventories and make sure the guests sail and sign accounts are all ok. There is a lot of paper work and computer work involved.

5. What is the best thing about working on a cruise ship?
I like traveling and seeing many places. I also like working for a team and where else can you meet so many people from so many places.

6. What is the hardest thing about working on a cruise ship?
You are away from your family so long you miss them and miss parts of their growing up. I cry at nights when I think how much I miss the girls and my Mom but they have a good school and good clothes and good things because I am here. Also you are constantly having friends come and go on the ships which is sad

I like all of the Caribbean ports because I am from there

10. If you could meet one famous person in the world who would it be and why

I’m just curious what kind of degrees are necessary to be in accounting/finance on cruise ships?
    Very good interview. Thanks!

  2. Karen has a warm, friendly smile.

John, When I cruise, I always pack several international calling cards to give to staff members who “go the extra mile.”

I know these folks work so hard and stay away from home…Am I correct in my assumption that these cards are welcomed and do get used? I wasn’t sure if they received free phone calls as a benefit…I thought that was on their own, not provided…

very touching. . . . . . she’s truly sacrificing for her family. . . it hurts to hear her miss her kids and mother, but she’s doing what she has to do. inspiring to say the least.

Thank you for the interview with one of your accountants! I’m in the same field and was very curious as to what an onboard accountants day would consist of. Now I know. I think I’ll retire to onboard accounting when I get to that age.

    Have a cheery day!
