1. Can you tell us how long you have been working for Carnival Cruise Lines?What year did you start and what is your current position?
I have been working for Carnival in 2000 as a Deck Cadet on the MS Celebration. My current position is 1st Officer (Deck Dept)
2. Where are you from and what is the best thing about living there?
I am half from Pisa (the leaning tower city) and half from Viareggio (Tuscany). Currently I am living in Viareggio and the best thing about living there is that my home is close to the sea and the mountains as well. lso the seafood and nightlife is incredible, especially in the summer time. The women are beautiful as well.
3. Are you married and tell us about some of your family?
I am not married yet, I am engaged to a Carnival Dancer named Sarena who is from Great Britain. She is wonderful and I want to have 10 children with her. My family is made up of 4 people including myself: my Mum, my Dad and my older brother.
4. What does your job involve? Describe what you do each day.
My job involves the Safety of the Navigation on the Bridge. I am on watch from 0400 to 0800 and from 1600 to 200 everyday plus I am assisting the Safety Officer in the daily training and drills for the crewmembers. I am also in charge of the Stability of the Ship, fresh water, bunkering and Lifesaving appliances such as lifeboats and life rafts, arriving and departing mooring maneuvers
5. What is the best thing about working on a cruise ship?
The best thing about working on a cruise ship is the possibility to do a job dreamt since I was a child. I love the sea and I love ships so my dream has come true.
6. What is the hardest thing about working on a cruise ship?
The only dark side of this job is the homesickness in being away from your family and friends for most of the year. Also, I cannot swim naked in the sea as I can at home. I love swimming naked but they do not allow it onboard
7. Please tell us your favorite things.
FOOD…………… Pasta alla boscaiola (which is made with mushrooms, cream and cheese)
MOVIE……………. 50 First Dates and the Godfather (Trilogy)
MUSIC ………… Donna Summer
FAVORITE WAY TO RELAX……………. Sunbathing naked, swimming naked and tending my olive garden ….sometimes naked as well.
8. If you could any other job on the ship for a day what would you like to do and why?
I would like to be the Master of the vessel…why? That’s because is my goal.
9. FAVORITE PORT
In the Med sea my favorite port is Livorno (which is close by Viareggio my Home town) while in the Caribbean Sea is Aruba
10. If you could meet one famous person in the world who would it be and why?
I would like to meet my favorite Italian actor Rocco Sufredi.

Hi John,
Thanks very much for the interview with the 1st Officer. Right now I’m a 3rd Officer onboard a Canadian Government Ship. I love being at sea and sailing to different places. I am seriously considering applying to work as a Navigation Officer onboard cruise ships (although it seems that Carnival doesn’t use Canadian Deck Officers). I was lucky enough to visit the bridge on the Carnival Conquest and it was amazing. I think the challenges that a large ship and so many passengers would bring would be exhilarating!
