Highlighting Japhet Gacus – Stateroom Steward

1. Can you tell us how long you have been working for Carnival Cruise Lines? What year did you start and what is your current position.
I have worked for Carnival for 13 years and started in 1995. I am now a Stateroom Steward.
2. Where are you from and what is the best thing about living there?
I am from Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines. I love the Philippines because of the nature and climate but the best thing is the people. Everyone looks after everyone and there is no crime and it is safe.
3.Are you married and tell us about some of your family?
Japhet is married and has an adopted boy who is 10 years old. He has 8 brothers and 1 sister.
4. What does your job involve? Describe what you do each day.
I get up around 7 am and start work at 7:30am. I have 22 cabins to clean everyday — 10 suites, 2 penthouse and 10 inside cabins. I clean and make the beds in the morning and finish around 12:30pm on port days and 1:30pm on sea days. I then take a break and return to work at night to make the towel animals and remake the beds at 5:30 pm and finish around 9:30pm.
5. What is the best thing about working on a cruise ship.
Explore the many ports of call and meet new friends. I also like saving money for my family as we are building a house where we can all live together.
6.What is the hardest thing about working on a cruise ship.
Missing the family and embarkation day which is the hardest working day.
7. Please tell us your favorite things.
FOOD - Pasta with Tomatoes
MOVIE - Out to Sea
MUSIC – soft music and oldies
FAVORITE WAY TO RELAX – I chill inside the cabin watching TV and hanging out with friends
8. If you could any other job on the ship for a day what would you like to do and why
Print Shop Tech/Purser bellman – the job he did before becoming a stateroom steward
9. FAVORITE PORT – St. Thomas
10. If you could meet one famous person in the world who would it be and why The President of the United States – just want to shake his hand

Hi John
As I looked at the blog this beautiful Long Island Sunday morning, the first thing I see is a smiling face that Jeanne and I were so, so happy to see at the door of our balcony state room on Freedom Japhet Gacus. Japhet had taken such excellent care of us on our previous sixteen day transatlantic cruise on The Liberty. We have alway had great service on our past Carnival criuses, but with Japhet we felt he just made the voyage extra special and on Freedom that was what we expirience again excellence.
Japhet Gacus is an asset to Carnival Criuse Line.
I hope to see him agian on our Voyage on Splendor. Please if you see him tell him Mr Raymond and Jeanne said hello and wish him the very best,we miss him also.
Thank’s Ray Czenszak

John – I’ve really enjoyed your blogs with crew members. Over six cruises, we’ve seen a truly hard-working group of people who go out of their way to give passengers a great vacation!
A question for you about ship’s officers: Our oldest son (16, a junior in high school) is interested in a career at sea, either in the Navy or the Merchant Marine (his plans are a “work in progress). He’s starting to look at colleges that would prepare him for a career as a ship’s officer. We’re sailing on the Valor in February; do you know whether it would be possible for him to meet an officer (either navigation or engineering) to talk about career paths, life at sea, etc? Thanks so much!

Japhet:
Ok, first, how do you pronounce that name! (Ya fet?)
Your work is endless and I can’t imagine making 22 beds and cleaning 2 bathrooms every day! I am certain you miss your home country and your family. Your years of service! Wow!
So today, when I go offf to work I will think of you. You were not our steward, but I recognize and thank you for making our Carnival vacation so special. Behind the scenes but so important to us…….I’ll try not to whine about my blessings today ( Making one bed and cleaning three toilets)
