Oh Canada

October 10, 2007 -

John Heald

Do you want the good news or the band news? OK, the good news. The weather remained gorgeous today with the sun shining and giving us a nice temperature of 75 degrees.

Now the bad news.

As I mentioned we were tendering today as there was no room at the pier. Now, I sang my own praises last time about how well I had this organized and I woke up this morning feeling confident that this would be repeated and all would be well………..it wasn’t…………bugger !

It started of OK with us arriving on time into Dubrovnik. The arrival is gorgeous and the outer islands glistened as the sun shone on cleanest water in the Med. We arrived at 7 am and started the process of dropping the anchor and then lowering six of our lifeboats which we used for tenders. This is always a fascinating sight for our guests who as I watched from the bridge stood on their balconies in various states of undress taking photos.

As our lifeboats were lowered, we were joined by two tenders from Dubrovnik. Now, preparing for a tender operation is complicated both onboard and with the boats themselves. We have to lower the platforms and then hook up ropes to secure the tenders against those platforms to allow safe entrance onto the tender boats. This process takes about 30 minutes and at 7:30 am we started to have the 800 guests arrive to the lounge ready for the first departure of the Best of Dubrovnik tour.

The process in the lounge is the same except I have each sticker number the guests collect topped off at 40. Each of our tenders has a capacity for 80 so I need to bring the guests down in groups of 40 and 2 groups at a time. They are then distributed onto the 42 seater buses for the tour.

Anyway, things were going well, the tenders were tied up at both the forward and aft gangways, the guests were in the lounge ready, the sun was shining, the birds were singing and a little dolphin was frolicking by the bow while a small furry rabbit skipped around on the pier waiting to be shot and eaten ………………sorry, had to snap back into reality there. Anyway, we were all set.

I called down the first four groups and Heidi marshaled her staff and the operation began. The first few minutes were fine and everything in the garden was rosy and I remember thinking…………..good……………I am the man.

Then, Murphy returned brandishing his law and ready to shove it right up my aft gangway………………and he did.

Without warning the wind changed direction and suddenly the tenders were moving up and down as swells took them backwards and forwards crashing into the platforms. I watched as the crew on the platforms stopped an older lady (we have one or two of those onboard) from trying to get onboard………………the situation was not good and the only person who was going to be getting on the tender was an Olympic Long Jumper or a very athletic Kangaroo wearing Nikes.

The Captain came over and we assessed the situation and there was no choice ………..we had to stop the operation. So, the people who were waiting to get onto the tender were turned around by the staff and taken back to the lounge. After assessing the situation the Captain decided that the operation could continue from the starboard side of the vessel. This meant lowering the platforms, preparing them and the ropes and moving all the tenders to the over side of the ship. This operation went very quickly and was well organized by the Captain and his team but it still meant we had a 40-minute delay.

So, this meant that guests had been sitting in the lounge for 50 minutes and with other guests not on a tour wanting to go ashore………..the lounge got full………..very full and at one point we had 1,000 people waiting to disembark.

I made an announcement on the PA and apologized but also made no apology for thinking of guests safety and everyone was very good about being patient……………well of course when I say everyone we did have one or two comments but overall, everyone was totally understanding. Once we started the operation again the guests went ashore quickly and by 11:10 am we had disembarked 2,700 guests and there was never a wait of more than 10 minutes for a tender to return to the ship.

So, there you go, a little insight into what can happen and the continuing saga of Mr. Murphy doing his best to make my last two cruises as tough as possible ……………………..bugger !

Here are today’s photos taken by Gary our now fully professional photographer. When he is not taking photos of the rich and famous he often can be found moonlighting as an entertainment staff member and today, he was working on the pier in Dubrovnik. Here are his photos of the ship and the tenders.

HERE ARE THE LETTERS FROM THE “IN THEIR OWN WORDS SECTION” JUST ONE TODAY……….WHY………SEE FOR YOURSELF.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

I GUESS YOU KNOW URINE LOVE !

HERE IS THE JOKE OF THE DAY

A little girl walks in to the den one Sunday morning while her dad is reading the paper.
“Where does poo come from?” she asks.
The father, feeling a little perturbed that his 5 year old daughter is already asking difficult questions, thinks for a moment and says:
“Well you know we just ate breakfast?”
“Yes,” answers the girl.
“Well, the food goes into our tummies and our bodies take out all the good stuff, and then whatever is left over comes out of our bottoms when we go to the toilet, and that is poo.”
The little girl looks shocked, and stares at him with watery eyes, in stunned silence for a few seconds, and then asks, “And Tigger?”

Let’s do some Q and A……..here we go. To skip the Q&A, click here.

BIG ED – Isn’t the Web cam a marvelous invention? There you are in Michigan using the web cam on the Costa ship to look at the Carnival Freedom. It was wonderful to see all a Princess, Costa and Carnival ship together and not far away in the shipyard were new ships being built for Cunard and Holland America. The family reunion was nearly complete, we were just missing AIDA, Seabourn and our new Spanish partner whose name escapes me at the moment. We will have extra Web cameras up for the blog cruise positioned in your cabin and for the great thong race……….viewing figures will be in there thousands…..well…….dozens………OK, just you and me then.
VINKEVEEN – I am so sorry that we will not be there for the TA cruise but thank you so much for being so understanding. I really need a break and I need to be there for Alan as well as seeing Mum and Dad. I have added your names to the invitation list for the party and hopefully we will get to say hello and have some fun together. Heidi sends her best and see you very soon ……sorry again. We zien jullie op de 28e om half 8 in de Swingtime Lounge voor een borrel.
KICIASKI – Hello George and hello Linda. I wondered where you had been. Thank you for your kind words for Alan, I will give you an update on his condition soon. We will be in Florida in January, so maybe we will see you then. I hope you had a great time working at Disney during the food festival, I am sure it must have been very rewarding. The July 13 sailing will still be considered the inaugural sailing. The naming ceremony will still be held in Dover and you will not miss anything. The 4-day cruise beforehand will be mostly travel agents on board and I will make sure that the 13th is very special and it will be even more so having my good friends George and Linda in their usual spots. Thank you for being our friends and thank you for supporting the blog. See you soon.
LYNN – It is always great to hear from people like yourself who have been reading the blog since the beginning, yet are making their first posting now. You sound very excited to be here soon and please make sure that you leave me a special note about your mum so I can take care of her birthday celebrations. I will definitely make sure that we say hello to you and your Mother and Daughter group. Thank you so much for making the blog a regular call and I do hope that you continue to enjoy it. Get ready for a special cruise that you and mum will never forget.
LINDA (MOM OF DJ) – Welcome back from your Carnival Victory cruise. How wonderful for your son that he was entertained so much by the Club 02 Director Ria. I have made sure that your comments have been passed to Chris Prideaux, her boss; who I am sure will be pleased to hear your words of praise. Do you have any photos of DJ? Anyway, I am so glad that you had a wonderful family vacation and thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. Say hello to DJ and I hope to meet him one day.
GLENDA AND JIM – Heidi was smiling from ear to ear when she heard what is on the way. She will probably now have more mugs than Starbucks themselves and to get one from a place we have never been like San Francisco is brilliant. She will also appreciate the soccer jersey which I am sure she will wear on vacation. We will see you on the bloggers cruise where we will have so much fun together.
ERNIE – I am so glad that I have found someone who remembers my old pal, Gary Hunter. I see you sailed with him in 1978 on board the Festivale. To me, Gary Hunter is what I strive to be……………the ultimate professional. Can’t wait to see you next year so we can chat about my mate Gary. You asked if I could possibly interview Mr. Micky Arison. It may be easier to interview the Pope or George Hamilton. Maybe as we reach one million, I can be brave enough to ask him. I am glad you are enjoying the blog and all the best.
CARLTON THE CRUISER – Thank you for the kind words for Mr. Rodriguez. I am sure he will enjoy the ride. Thank you Carlton.
SUSAN B – I have passed your pleeeeeeeease on to Heidi and I am sure we can squeeze one more blog out of her some time soon. My guess is, it will probably be called “packing.” Thank you Susan, there is more news on the way about Alan.
CATMAMA044 – Just a quick note to say Many thanks for welcoming Mr. Rodriguez on board, I am sure he appreciates this very much. Hope all is well.

WE NOW MOVE TO THE BLOG CALLED “INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE OF FUN”

BIG ED – Your story could become reality except the bit about the suite. However, I am sure you will have your audience with the Cruise Director and in fact, I think you will be very much part of our daily Q & A’s. How is Mrs. Big Ed, is she excited?
BILL ZYDECOCRUISER – There is more chance of me wearing Big Ed’s underwear as a hat than finding me dancing.
KEVIN – Thank you for asking about Heidi’s mum. She did have a wonderful time and you are the second person to ask for a Heidi blog and there will be one soon. The risotto sounds wonderful and one day I am sure we will be having dinner in your restaurant together. I will see you soon and will provide the cigars and the Jelly Beans. Take care mate.
GREG BALDASARRI – Thank you for saying “I dance like Fred Astaire.” I really don’t know what I was doing and as the days go on and I get more tired, it’s anyone’s guess what I do on stage. Thank you so very much for all of your kind words for your friend Alan. I will tell you more about him later. Thank you mate for being a great friend.
SUSAN B – Heidi always takes great care of me and I really do not know where I would be without her. She certainly deserves a long, long rest and she certainly does not deserve to see Big Ed and I in tiger-print thongs, not that you would see any of the print. Thank you for everything Susan, especially the words about Alan. All the best.
MICHELLE MANN – Michelle, I made some inquiries and you will need the letter. These days, getting into the United States is very tough. You will be required to have fingerprints taken, an eye photo and copies of your credit cards. These days, it is best not to take any chances. So, my advice is, have the letter. Hopefully, it will be easier to get into your house for a cup of tea. Put the kettle on, see you soon.
JULIE GANTT – I do one dance move and suddenly the expectations are that I have become John Travolta. Julie, I suggest you seek professional help as dreaming of me dancing in a thong is only one step away from the straight jacket. Thank you Julie and thanks for being so much fun.
LINDA HERNACKI – Hello Linda. Just as much as you enjoy starting your day by reading the blog thingy, I enjoy typing in your name. Thank you again for such kind words and maybe one day when we eventually meet I would do a little private dance, just for you. I hope Mike is well and I hope you know how much your support of the blog means to Heidi and I.
GRACE – OK, I have no idea where we are going to put all these mugs, but thank you so very much for mailing Heidi two more from your home town of San Antonio. Thank you so much and hopefully on the Bloggers cruise we can share a cup of coffee together.
CAPTAIN BILL – You asked about past cruisers, so let me give you a little information. During embarkation, you will be asked if you have cruised with Carnival before. If the answer is yes, you will receive an invitation to a one-hour cocktail reception on board. You will also receive a pin representing the ship you are sailing on. When you reach 10 cruises, you will be classified as a Platinum member. This is an amazing milestone and you will benefit then from a host of special gifts and privileges including priority embarkation and debarkation, private galley tour and complimentary in cabin gifts. If you speak to any Platinum members they will be sure to sing its praises. I still do have many audience participation events and they are still my favorite shows to host. I see you have done 23 cruises with us; do you have your Platinum card? I hope your next cruise will be with me, so I can shake your hand and say thank you for reading the blog. Our best to you and your family.
KANUCKCRUISER – Oh, I see, I thought you played that many games in a season…………oops. I am really looking forward, like you, to the creation of the private adult Serenity areas on the open decks and I can picture you and I having a peaceful chat about the Dallas Cowboys in this pocket of tranquility. Heidi says thank you for thinking of her and we really will relax, I promise. Hope things are well in Canada and the winter is staying away for now. Best wishes from us both.
TEACUP – I am glad you enjoyed the photos of Capri and I remember when we were there in May when you cruised, that indeed it was cloudy. Congratulations on booking the Carnival Miracle and I hope it will provide you with as much fun as you had here on the Carnival Freedom. Cheers.
JO MYERLY – I cannot believe that reservations know nothing about the Carnival Splendor July 2 cruise. Is anyone else having problems? I will ask about transfers from Milan to Genoa and will get back to you as soon as I have more information. You are correct, it is a great itinerary. More information will follow. Wish you were here.
CARL HARMON – Someone told me the Yankees had lost, is this true? Thank you for your prayers for Alan, they are needed and appreciated. Thank you mate.
CAROL SCHOENBERGER – I am so disappointed that my joke did not cause your computer to receive its daily shower. Better luck next time. Glad you enjoyed the photos and my friend from Japan has become a cult hero this week. It won’t be long to your Carnival Imagination cruise and I am looking forward to hearing all about your adventures. Thanks for being such a great friend and I am look forward to sitting on Lido and watching Big Ed’s new video concert called “A thong for you” on the big screen. See you soon Carol.
MYRA BUSHNELL – I will post the latest news on Alan very shortly. Thank you for your prayer and I shall make sure that when he is well enough Alan sees yours and everyone else’s beautiful postings. Thank you so much Myra.
DWA76 – How are my Cowboys doing, did they win? I am not sure you could call what I did on stage dancing; it was more like moving my leg from side to side as though someone had put a rattlesnake down my pants. There is another joke there but I leave that one alone. Thanks as always for another great posting and I continue to look forward to the day where we finally meet.
DAVE MYERLY – Can’t do anything about other people’s handwriting Dave; however, Roberto has told me he will improve the lighting on the letters themselves. I haven’t forgotten about your interview request and it will be forthcoming, I promise. Hope you and Jo are well.
TERESA C – OK, let’s stop with the dancing thing. As Heidi will tell you, I am the worst dancer in the world, apart from Roger Blum. This was a one off and was only performed to try and communicate with my good friend from Japan. Sorry about your Cubs, I promise to cheer for them next year; however, I am afraid your Bulls are going to feel some Miami Heat. Mostly, I want to say thank you for praying for Alan. Many thanks and my best wishes to you and your family.
THE CARTERS FROM NEVADA – Considering this is the first time I have typed in your name, I was so astonished to see that you have sent Heidi a care package. She will be thrilled and we will let you know when it arrives. We look forward to seeing you on the Carnival Splendor next year. All the best till then.
MATT AND VIKKI TILL – You have nothing to worry about, first of all, the down is non-allergenic and if you want to, like Heidi’s mum, you can swap the comforter for a woolen blanket. Please don’t be nervous, I am here to help you and let me know if you need anything else, what so ever. Cheers.
KATHIE (KAPERINO) – Another brilliant poem and Kathie, I laughed at the thought of Fatima sharing a bath with Big Ed, Alan and myself. That bath would have to be a swimming pool. Thanks Kathie, I hope you keep enjoying the blog.
JO MYERLY – Which bit don’t you understand Jo? Let me know and I help you out.
RUTH JAMISON – Indeed, we are family. I look forward to shaking you husband’s hand, giving you a hug, not long now. Thanks for your prayers for Alan, see you very soon.
MARY AND MOE – Thank you for coming out into the open and say that you are addicted to the blog. I am so pleased to welcome you and I hope this will be the first of many postings. Thank you a billion times for booking the bloggers cruise and I see that you are also thinking of the Carnival Splendor Argentina cruise as well. I am not sure if I will be there for that one, but there is a chance. Many thanks for your thoughts and prayers for Alan. Welcome to the world of the blog thingy, see you soon.
LFTTNSFCF – Hello Jon. I passed your congratulations to Gary on his photos, he was really happy. I know I will not be with you for the Welcome Aboard show but I shall be passing your name and cabin to Todd, so do not be surprised when you are called upon to perform. Very much looking forward to shaking your hand, see you very soon mate.
TRAVELADY – 99% of the shops in the old town of Dubrovnik will be open on a Sunday. They know the ship is coming and the money it will bring, so they will be ready for you. The Ramparts will close at 3 pm on a Sunday and we have an organized tour that leaves early in the morning which is extraordinary. We will see you soon and thank you of thinking of my mate Alan. Have a safe journey.
LISA AND ELAINE – That is very, very funny ladies. Thank you so much for the laughs. Give me more.
TRAVIS AND MARY – How super that you have decided to book the Bloggers Cruise and I promise to make that one so very special. Thank you for your thoughts for Alan and Heidi and I are very much looking forward to our vacation. Heidi would love a Dallas Cowboy souvenir, preferably the quarterback. See you in January.
INEZ – It was a one off dance, never to be repeated except for on the Bloggers Cruise…………..maybe. Hope you enjoy the blog and Heidi and I send our kindest wishes to you.
WANMAN – I too hope we cruise together soon. You have had so many fantastic Cruise Directors in Mark Price, Todd Wittmer and the now retired Larry Garlutzo. Would you please let me know when you are cruising and the day of your sister’s birthday? I will also need your name and cabin number please. Thank you for you kind words and look forward to hearing from you soon.
JULIE GANTT – A perfect description of my dancing. Thanks for the laughs.
PHIL INCORVIA – You are more than welcome, now can you send me something to get me out of the doghouse?

That’s all for now and as always there will be more to follow tomorrow.

Now, on to Alan. I spoke with Alison just now who told me that his seven-hour operation went well. He is now in intensive care and hopefully will be back in his regular room. He has pipes and tubes everywhere but overall the doctors are happy. He will have another major operation in a few weeks time and I am glad I will be home for that. I will also ask the surgeon if he can do some plastic surgery while he is there :)

It is hard to be funny when you are thinking about things like this but the show must go on and today it did with a very busy day of shows, TV events and putting the finishing touches to the new past guest video which will be shown fleetwide.

This cruise has been very quiet so far when it comes to guest comments or complaints ………..until today when I saw this gem.

Hi John

Mrs. &*&^%$#@*& asking that the Cruise Director speak to her. She is very angry because she was expecting to hear me wish everyone from Canada a Happy Thanksgiving day and that we would be serving typical Canadian food. She says that the Cruise Director is racial against Canadians.

John, please call her. I tried to explain but she will only talk to you.

Thank you!

Joanna

OOPS

I am really mad that I forgot about this. Anyway, I did call the guest and she was very mad at me. She felt I was racist against Canadians and that if it had been American Thanksgiving that a lot of fuss would have been made etc. She had been told by her travel agent that we would have Maple Roasted Turkey and Smokey something stuffing and I think she said Chocolate Cream Pie.

Anyway, I apologized and earlier this evening I apologized publicly before each show and wished everyone from Canada a Happy Thanksgiving. The lady guest remains angry at me though and even though I have apologized publicly and personally she remains upset and that in turn upsets me. I also apologize to all the Canadians who read this blog for not wishing you Happy Thanksgiving, I am truly sorry.

Usually I finish with a cute or amusing story but with the tenders, Murphy, the entire country of Canada mad at me and of course Alan on my mind I think I will say goodbye now and start fresh again in the morning. Hope you understand.

Goodnight

The poet was looking for a rhyme

I too am from the Salem/Keizer area of Oregon, just like your fellow in the ‘In Your Own Words’. Believe me, we don’t all urinate in the grass.

Just realized you had another blog thingy tonight, so here goes: Glad to hear about Alan, and as all us bloggers continue to pray for him we will keep checking the blog for further updates till you leave on your vacation/taking care of Alan etc. Say, you mentioned about a past guest video, was this filmed solely on the Freedom? It made me think of something, when Mike and I and my son and daughter in law were on the Glory’s inaugural cruise they were filming a video, and awhile back on the travel channel we were watching it and guess what? I am on that video, of cause just the back of me walking into a gift shop on board. Mike says, “Typical” as I spend LOTS of time at the gift shops on board BUYING, BUYING BUYING! In fact we always bring an extra suitcase with us folded up inside Mike’s suitcase to bring back all that I BUY, but as I told him I have to bring stuff back for the grandkids! Now I have 4 grandsons to buy for! One of my grandsons LOVES the build a bear/other animals that I bring him, I have gotten him a dog, bear and cat so far. Wonder what NEW ones CAMP Carnival will have this year? Anyway, yes for about a 1/2 minute I was famous on a CCL video! HA! HA! Everytime one of my friends watches that video they call me and say, Just saw you on TV! HA! Well, again God Bless you guys, and our Prayers go out to you all! Your friends, Linda & Mike P.S. John, can you PLEASE provide me with something of an itinerary as to what ships you will be on in April/May 2008 since we will probably book another cruise when we get back from this one in November. And again, if you can please find out how long it takes something to reach you in Europe (England- once you are home) from Miami, so I can plan when to send this package I have for you guys. THANKS!

I am so not angry with you for not wishing us Canadians a Happy Thanksgiving. You are only one person and with reading this blog, as I said before the highlight of my day, you can’t possibly remember everything. People need to get a grip, there are so much more in life to be worried about, like your friend. I know everything will turn out just fine. Bad things should never happen to good people. God bless. Enjoy your upcoming holidays, you and your wife really deserve it. You both have done an outstanding job with this blog and what you do to make dreams come true for the people who appreicate (sp. not so good with that), what you do. Look forward to upcoming good news.

Good evening Mr. Heald. I told you Alan would go through his operation with flying colours. We are all in this here together. Also, you didn’t have to apologize to anyone for not stating Canada’s Thanksgiving. I think that lady is a dingbat. It seems it wasn’t enough for you to think about that day, you now had to wish Canada a Thanksgiving. Relax my friend. Keep your strength for your friend Alan. Tell Gary that I truly enjoyed his photos especially the ones with the Freedom. My it’s a very beautiful ship. I’m very excited waiting for the time to step on it. Are you packed yet ready to go to England for your vacation and the chance of visiting your friend Alan? Ciao for now.

Well I’m not mad at you! I’ve tried to have Thanksgiving here in Quebec for seven years, but they think nothing of it. Just a three day weekend for them, lol. I just wanted to say (and there’s no need to answer my comment, that must be a lot of work) that those pictures gave me a visceral lusting reaction. The signature Carnival (what is it again, the pipe thing?) statuesque red tail spouting smoke made me lust for our turn on that boat. Which is coming in two hundred and something days. Can’t wait.

  8. Kathie says:

Again, another difficult day but faced with humor and a lot of support from your fans. Tonight I go to sleep thinking of Alan, Nanette , Eugene, Randy ( who has been released from the hospital the spider from Iraq torn from his foot) and Sweet Dreams who will son be on the ship. Don’t pack to much for your trip. Yours, Good to hear from Linda and George!

    John,

Thank you for the news about Alan. I’m sure that many thousands beyond me are thrilled to hear that part one is done and went well. Offer him my best wishes at your earliest convenience.

I never thought that the lifeboats would be used to tender. I have seen them running about in port a bit but never with passengers on board. At least you don’t have to worry about the competency of the crews!

How odd… I wasn’t aware that Canadians were their own race… nationality, certainly, but a race? Hummm… Well, I’m glad that they were finally recognized. Maple roasted turkey sounds delicious but I think I’ll stick with the Porterhouse from the supper club. ;)

I was a bit taken aback by your ‘In Their Own Words’ segment… certainly not offended but… well… taken aback. God bless the man who can fall in love with a woman in that position. It seems to work for him!

All my best to you, Heidi and the Rambunctious Roberto.

    Regards, my friend.

  11. lookingforwardtothenearlysmokefreecarnivalfreedom says:

Maple roasted turkey – only if it is made with Vermont maple syrup.

Have you ever made maple syrup, John? It is, to say the least, a sweet experience.

You begin by collecting the sap from the maple trees – the nights must be near freezing and the days warm for the sap to run copiously.

Then, once you have enough sap, you have to boil it down – real Vermonters do it over a wood fire. As the water evaporates (it can take 40 liters of sap to make one liter of syrup), the air is permeated with the sweetness of the forthcoming product.

It takes hours to produce maple syrup, so, by the time you are done, you have pretty much had it.

Of course, maple syrup is best on fresh fallen snow.

OOPS – I forgot you were a diabetic. Please check your blood sugar after reading this response.

    And I expect a hug, not a handshake. :)

I can’t imagine being dissappointed in not having Thanksgiving while cruising the Med.?
Maybe if you were cruising in Canada and didn’t ack. it……….. chocolate cream pie? traditional is pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving.
Hang in there, hope everything turns out okay for your friend Alan.

John, as it appears as though some sneaky individual with knowledge of HTML programing has disabled the comments section on the blog titled “Highlighting Roberto Castro” (YOU know who you are… ;) ) I’ll post my comment here:

    BRAVO, ROBERTO!!

Thank you so, so much for your efforts in making this blog such a wonderful success.

You, sir, are a huge part of a remarkable phenomenon. We all owe you a huge debt of gratitude.

I salute, you, Roberto for your cunning and courage in the face of adversity… well… OK… probably not much adversity but I still salute you.

    Thank you, my friend.

    Regards,

    Greg

  19. Leasa says:

    Oh John,
You dear sweet man. I just finished reading today’s blog and I almost had to cry for you. Here you are going through all this worry over Alan, trying to make sure all your guests have a wonderful cruise, and then after you publicly and personally apologize to someone, they stay angry. I’m sorry honey; you just hang in there because your vacation is coming soon. I’m sure the other Canadian guests have forgiven you. I’m glad to hear Alan got through his surgery o.k. I’ll give a prayer of thanks tonight and keep him in them for the next time around. Also for Nanette. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers as well. John, here’s another little joke for you. I hope it makes you smile. There Are No Dogs Allowed Here

A man goes to a bar with his dog. He goes up to the bar and asks for a drink. The bartender says “You can’t bring that dog in here!” The guy, without missing
a beat, says “This is my seeing-eye dog.” “Oh man, ” the bartender says, “I’m sorry, here, the first one’s on me.” The man takes his drink and goes to
    a table near the door.

Another guy walks in the bar with a Chihuahua. The first guys sees him, stops him and says “You can’t bring that dog in here unless you tell him it’s a
seeing-eye dog.” The second man graciously thanks the first man and continues to the bar. He asks for a drink. The bartender says “Hey, you can’t bring
    that dog in here!”

The second man replies “This is my seeing-eye dog.” The bartender says, “No, I don’t think so. They do not have Chiwauas as seeing-eye dogs.” The man pauses
for a half-second and replies “What?!?! They gave me a Chihuahua?!?”

  22. "BIG" ED says:

John, Mrs. BID ED is looking for places to hide on the ship during the Bloggers Cruise. She doesn’t want to be seen with me. She just saw on TV that on cruise ships in Hawaii the cruise director is called “KUMU” meaning teacher. So I guess your our “BIG KUMU”.

    John,
Thanks so much for the update on Alan! He has been on all our minds alot lately, especially today. I’m sure that once he is out of ICU and can talk, you will be on the phone with him making him laugh! Laughter is very healing!! Keep up the good work.

  24. Mary "Bob" from the "Bob Family" says:

    Hi John

Don’t worry, us Canadians are not upset at you, as a matter of fact we think you are the best cruise director in the whole world!!! The “Bob Family” just got off the Freedom last week, and we had a great time. We have been so lucky to have you be our cruise director on so many of our cruises and this one was no different. the “Bob Family” will be heading for the Miracle next month on the American Thanksgiving. All 116 “Bobs” will be feasting on Turkey on November 22 and boarding the ship on November 23rd.

Thank you again for making our cruise last week a wonderful and fun experience for all of us. Give our best to Sasi, who was a tremendous help with our Injured “Bob”, Carl, who was hit by a taxi in Rome before boarding the ship.

I wish Alan a complete recovery and hopefully the “Bob Family” we will see you again on a future cruise (maybe even on the Bloggers cruise in January).

You are the best and what a great team you and Heidi make!!!

    Luv

Mary “Bob”….all the best from our leader Pat “Bob” and the whole “Bob Family”.

    P.S.

I’ll try to send a picture from last year’s Miracle sailing with all 157 “Bobs” in yellow shirts and hats.

  25. Dave and Barb Butler says:

John, my friend, you work too much. I know that you want every single person aboard that ship to be happy every minute that they are there. I truly believe that some people are just made to be angry or try to upset things. Thankfully not many but a few. You have said that you are sorry and that is all that you can do. When the evening is over just have a cold drink and sit and hold Heidi and let all of that tention be released from your body. Try not to worry so much about allen. Hard to do I know but he is in good hands medically and so many prayers are being sent his way I don’t think he can do anything but get well. When you see Allen be sure and give him a big hug from all of us. See you soo and please try to rest some.

  27. Carol Schoenberger says:

Good morning dear John and Heidi,

Does Big Ed know about his new video concert “A thong for you”? He’s been very quiet about it. But I can’t wait to see it.

I just received my flight info. for my cruise – less than 55 days to go. Yippeeee. You had asked me a while ago for my cabin no. – it’s Empress #122, on 12/3/07.

Leasa – I loved that joke and I am starting to know the feeling too.

John, thanks for the new info on the new Queen Elizabeth. That is excellent. Long Live the Queens.

Is Alan still in Intensive Care? I am praying all will be well now and for the next surgery. Please send my best wishes to him and his family. We are all family now.

A former co-worker of mine just left for a Med. cruise with one of the cruise lines of they who shall not be named. (she didn’t consult with me before making arrangements or I would have sent her to the Freedom). But I did pass along some of your info on weather, tours, etc. and she thanks you. She works for a very pretigious Catholic University here and says she has “connections”. She hopes to get an audience with the Pope. I’ll let you know if she does.

Thanks for the interview with Roberto.

    See ya later, gator,
    Regards,
    Carol

  28. Canuck Cruiser says:

    Dear John,
As the unofficial chief blogger from the land of the beaver ……….tell the woman to blow it out her ear. First of all……………………we are not a race of people so you being racist does not count. LOL.

Canada is a collection of many races , colours and creeds and a very proud country. Don’t let one loose cannon who did not get her Turkey and stuffing and an announcement from the bridge ruin your entire day. I apologize for her rudeness and thank you for trying to calm her down. My guess is that she listens to far too many people ( ie her travel agent) that fill her head with whatever SHE wants to hear. Enough ranting from me.

Great news about Alan……………..keep thinking positive and he’ll be out of the woods in no time giving you and Big Ed a hard time on the Bloggers cruise.
Well I’m book on the Fascination for April 7th, 2008 out of Miami. Just a four day jaunt to Key West and Mexico but a nice ending to my trip to Florida to play baseball with my buddies. Any suggestions for Key West or Calica? We leave at 2:00 pm from Key West so we won’t see the sunset with the locals ( I hear that is a must do in Key West) .

Great article on Roberto…………he’s the MAN when it comes to this blog. Obviously a real hard worker and Carnival should be proud ………( I know you’re reading this Roberto so don’t let your head get too swollen) Keep up the great job.

Yes John…………….the Cowboys are now 5-0 ( and I know that you know that means 5 wins and no losses) and we won a thriller in Buffalo on Monday night 25-24 ( that was the score) with time running out. Whew………I was nervous but happy with the win. Now on to New England ( a team near your Boston RED SOX) and another tough game. More on that later.
Your RED SOX have advanced to play Cleveland for the American League championship. I’d wish you good luck but I’m a diehard TIGERS fan and it wouldn’t be proper. LOL

Well off to work I go………….all the best to you and Heidi and the crew.
Tell Mr. Murphy to buggar off ………he’s not welcome on the FREEDOM any more!

PS…………..Remembrance day in Canada is November 11th…………the day we honour ( spelled correctly) our veterans and armed forces personnel.
Wouldn’t want you to be in dutch with any more Canadians. LOL again.

    All the best,

    B&D from Canada

  29. Susan B says:

    John,
Thanks for the interveiw with Roberto. He is such a great asset to this blog!

I’m sure you will be getting more good news about Alan soon! Try not to worry to much.

Let Hedi do the packing when you go on your holiday…if you are like most men…well, just let Hedi pack…lol.

You let one dingbat of a lady upset you to much. You know there is at least one on every cruise…just wait until she asks for a refund…lol.

    Susan

  30. Rikki Boyce says:

I’m glad Alan’s surgery went well. I’m sure knowing you and Heidi will be by his side soon gives him a lift.

I just noticed that daylight savings time ends during the TA. Does Carnival acknowledge that? Do we get yet another bonus hour during this cruise? Woohoo!

Can’t wait to meet you and Heidi and wish you both a safe and rejuvenating break. I know you’re counting the hours.

  31. the Bears, Barb & Carl says:

    Hi John,
Sorry to hear that Mr. Murphey is still following you around. Tell him to “Bug Off” and let you enjoy your last days before vacation.

Glad to hear that Alan’s first surgery went well and sorry to hear that it was not scheduled so that you could be there with him. I’m sure Alan and his family understand and they know you were there with him in your heart. Tell him we (all the bloggers) are thinking of him now and wish him well.

I read a head to Roberto’s interview… He’s amazing. Look’s like he will have a great future with CCL too. He’s very talented, ambitious and professional. Will he be on the blogger’s cruise with us? If not I think Carnival should include him. Where would this blog be with out him??? We need him!

All is well on the home front here at this time. Weather is changing to fall. We actually enjoyed a cup of tea in front of the fireplace (that had a fire in it) last night. So relaxing. You and Heidi come join us sometime, if you like.

Take care and hello to Heidi!!!

  32. lovely news that alan did well in his surgery. the next will also be wonderful. see you soon….

    smiles, bonnie and prince charlie

  33. MAT & VIKKI TILL says:

John, thanks for your assurances. I guess the worst that can happen is that I stay out all night (having fun), and have no need for a comforter or pillows.

By the way, being a big Bugs Bunny fan, and not an Emer Fudd fan, I, too, am mad at you:)

  34. carl harmon says:

JOHN,, The Red Sox starts to play for the American League Championship on 10-12-07 Fri night. The New England Patriots plays the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday NEW ENGLAND WILL WIN, they are the best. 35. DWA76 says:

    Hi John/Heidi/Everyone:
Glad to hear Alan’s first procedure went well. I will continue thinking of him as I know he is getting ready for his next one in a few weeks.

John, I appreciate your efforts however you can’t realize that certain day are holidays for certain people. In fact, it appears that everyday is a holiday for a religion, country, etc. So does that mean you are supposed to be on top of that everyday? Please!

I love the ship pictures that Gary took. What was the other ship in the first picture on the right side? The Freedom looks so pretty in those waters.

Thank you for a great blog today!
    David

P.S. Cowboys are 5-0 with their toughest game ahead this Sunday against the New England Patriots who are also 5-0. Go Cowboys!

  36. Joy Nixon says:

Yes the Yankees lost to our wonderful Cleveland Indians! Go Tribe!

  37. Msqpon - Jo Myerly says:

Hi John and all bloggers, The info on the July 2 sailing on the Carnival Splendor is finally on the website. I had fun calling some of my Carnival contacts and saying “See I was right there is a July 2 sailing” Thanks John I knew you were right. I checked prices. No discounts so far.

    Hey John
2 DAYS until my cruise Hurray! just wanted to find out if you were able to confirm my dinner time (8pm). I am glad to hear Alan is doing well I will keep him in my prayers.

    James

  39. Ruth Jamison says:

    John,
Gee..it must be an international thing… this was not my best day either. I called hubby and read your response to him which made us both feel better!
I am glad Alan made it through the initial surgery. Rest assured, prayers are continuing to be offered up for him.
I hope both you and Heidi will take some time to recuperate from your grueling schedule. Hubby was telling me on the phone that he honestly did not know how you maintained with all the issues you have to deal with on a daily basis.
The pictures were beautiful. Hopefully, we will get to visit Dubronik at some point. We have heard it is a beautiful country.
Hang in there, John. It will not be long until you will be able to unwind!

  40. Kellie O'Leary says:

    Dear John & Heidi

Since the Baseball Season ended on September 30th (Ok it ended for the Blue Jays, but the Yankees are gone as well!!! Go CLEVELAND!) I finally got around to taking some holidays. I have been going through withdrawls since I was up at my mothers cottage with no internet and no blackberry connection for nine whole days. I came home after spending the Canadian Thanksgiving with 19 family members and could not wait to get on the computer to catch up.
For the lady that complained about you forgetting the Canadian Thanksgiving you should have told her to get stuffed……..It is unbelievable what people will complain about, have no fears we Canadian Bloggers and I think there are quite a few of us are not offended in the least.
My thoughts and prayers are with Alan and his family I can’t begin to imagine the stress you must be under worring about him on top of not having a time off in over nine months.
Make the most of your time off and don’t worry about letting us Bloggers down take the time to spoil your beautiful wife and enjoy your family and friends.

    All the best

    Kellie

  41. Sue says:

    Thanks, Sue

  42. Cindy56 says:

    Hi John,

I’m Canadian and if I were cruising the Freedom right now (which I wish I was…….) I would not be offended if you didn’t mention the Canadian Thanksgiving so don’t give it another thought. What a silly woman getting upset over such a little thing.
    All the best,
    Cindy

My first cruise was in 1988 on Jubilee, and I love to cruise w. Carnival since then. Our kids (Tom-13 and Becky-12, next month) got a chance to meet Wee Jimmy on Triumph in Nov ’04, absolutely love him. Becky even got a medal frm him for helping call number in Bingo. It hangs proudly in her room.I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you at Carnival for making everyone feel so welcome and at home on your ships all the time. We are planning our 5th cruise with Carnival, and hope to meet you and Heidi one day too! John , I was so happy to hea r that Alan got through his first surgery so well. I f I could do it , then Alan can do it . I just got over having 3 major surgeries in 18 months (kidney and pancresas transplants and complications frm last surgery and my diabetes) He is so blessed to have friend like you and Heidi. You know what got me thru it all- My faith in God (Can you still say the “G ” word on the internet?) My Wonderful husband , my family, friends, but most importantly, our church friends, who were so there for us. So tell Alan to get well, we’re praying for him in our small town of Narrowsburg. John, you and Heidi have the greatest time on holiday. Say hey to my Cousin Will and his wife, Carolyn, who live in Fromm (did I spell it right? :) ) outside of London. Take Care, Sue frm Narrowsburg

  45. Theresa Lafferty says:

    John,
Just arrived home and I am catching up on the blog as it cost to much to read it while on board. To funny when I read about Croatia I didnt even notice there was a problem. Was the most wonderful place we visited, the cruise was nice and the staff were wonderful I was greatly dissapointed there were no ice cream cones. We had a very safe trip home and you in that dress made the cruise.

  46. "BIG" Ed says:

    Theresa Lafferty,

To save minutes and money don’t read it online when your paying for minutes. Just do a save of the post with comments you want. Make sure you got the comments open because if your on the home page you will down load every post. Then you read it off-line. If you are going to comment write it as an e-mail then cut ans paste it in the comments box after you go back on-line. Saves all kinds of minutes. You can do this with anything. Save and do the reading off line.
