Foot In Mouth

Good Evening from the beautiful South of France.

The season is over and there are many ways of seeing this is the case. First of all, we are the only ship here today and I am not just talking about cruise ships. Obviously the rich and famous have realized the weather is getting colder and the season is over as most of the mega yachts are gone…….where………I would guess the Caribbean but certainly today there are very few around. Even George Hamilton must be tanning elsewhere because I don’t see his yacht anywhere.

So, the sun was with us even though the temperature peaked at only 72 degrees. The tender operation went smoothly and compared to Dubrovnik……….well………….it’s like comparing a night of passion with Catherine Zeta Jones or …………well……me.

No time to go ashore today as blogging duties are required and of course helping Todd prepare everything for the ship’s return to the U.S.A. and in particular Miami. …………..funny…………I just used the delete button then……….I had written “ship’s return home” but then I decided that Europe is her home……….don’t know why…………just felt like this is the case……….look at me getting all sentimental.

I have just been reading some new additions to the fleet-wide safety drills that we hold for each and every guest. These are already in effect so I thought you might like to hear about them.

In the past we have asked guests to put their life jackets on and then proceed to their muster stations and once there we have you pay attention to the staff who then show you the correct and proper way to wear the lifejackets. This never made sense. Some people know how to put them on but many do not so now we will ask guests not to wear the lifejackets until at the muster stations and then show how to properly wear them during the drill.

After that, we will ask guests to take them off while all the other information about safety onboard is read out by the Cruise Director. This will, I am sure, be good news for those who have to hold their drills in very hot climates like Miami and Alaska!

You know, if I were to list a top ten things that get on my nerves the most……….somewhere on that list would be passengers who try to skip the drill or pay no attention to what’s happening.

Also on that list would be why it is I spend hundreds of dollars on lingerie for Heidi and she wears one of my t-shirts to go to bed and then when I look for that t-shirt I can’t find it because it’s under her pillow……………that’s me in the you know where again……………woof.

Here are some photos. These were taken by Jamie and are of Île Sainte-Marguerite, it is the island home to Fort Royal. This was the home to the famous Man in the Iron Mask……….the twin brother of a French King who looked like Leonardo De Cappio…….or something. Anyway, the island is located behind where the ship docks in Cannes.

Just one letter today from the In Their Own Words Section……………..but it is a special one.

In Their Own Words
In Their Own Words

Letters like this put so much into perspective and tonight Tom and Annette are dining at the Supper Club……..I am paying…….not Carnival………..me. I could have charged their meal but ……..well…….something told me I should pay……….it just makes me feel…well……….you understand. Think of them tonight please.

Here is the joke of the day.

Old man Murphy had worked down at the brewery for years, but one day he just wasn’t paying attention and he tripped on the walkway and fell over into the beer vat and drowned. The foreman thought it should be his job to inform the widow Murphy of her old man’s death. He showed up at the front door and rang the bell. When she came to the door, he said, “I’m sorry to tell you, but poor old Murphy passed away at work today when he fell into the vat and drowned.” She wept and covered her face with her apron and after a time, between sobs, she asked, “Tell me, did he suffer?” “I don’t think so,” said the foreman, “He got out three times to go to the men’s room.”

Here we go with today’s comments and questions.

As you can see, I have slapped on a lot of blogs in the last few days and once again I am up to 100 comments.

I will try and get through as many as I can today. Starting with the blog “Britney Jeers”. To skip the Q&A, click here.

GREG BALDASSARI – Hello mate. I sometimes forget to put my temperatures in Fahrenheit as well as Celsius. 8 degrees was 8 degrees Celsius……….it was bloody cold.
Venice is the most Northern port we go to and after a summer of high temperatures it was a shock to the system…..but for me a nice one as I love the cold. Cher would be a great replacement for Ms. Spears but unfortunately, she and Sonny already appear as special guest stars. Thanks Greg, it always gives me a thrill to see your name. Wish you all the best.
A CRUISE BY ANY OTHER NAME – What a great, idea Carly Simon. Out of all the ones you suggested, she would be my choice. Thank you for your information on the meteor shower, however, after what happened the last time, until I actually see huge lumps of rock plummeting towards the earth, there will be no announcement from me. Hope this finds you well and see you soon.
J TODDINMAN – Another classic. I lost the battle, my dad pulled rank and will be mounting the baseball bat for all to see……….I remain humbled by your gift. Thank you poet.
NICO R – Thanks mate.
KEVIN – Who is Christina Aguilera? Having typed this I realize I am showing my complete lack of knowledge for modern music. Anyway, I shall ask Heidi and see what she thinks. You asked if there was an inside joke you can play on the Cruise Director on the Carnival Miracle. His name is Brent and after everything he does you should say: “That’s John’s joke”……….and it really is. Cheers mate. Wishing you all the best and knock it down to third for me.
PAUL F. PIETRANGELO – Hello mate, it’s great to hear from you again. Ahh, Tom Jones, that would certainly be a wonderful replacement for Britney. Heidi and I love Tom and so does my mum. Alan’s meningitis is passing and hopefully by the time you read this, he should be better. It sounds like you went through the same after your ordeal. I know Alan will appreciate your support even more knowing the fact that you have been through something similar. Wishing you continued health and happiness my friend.
SEAN – Michael Jackson………..mmmmmm, uhhhm, not sure how that would go over. The problem is, we tend to remember Michael now for the bad things and not the brilliant music that he has given us over the years. Still, it’s a great idea. I agree with you 100% about CNN, it is not my favorite news channel. The only reason we play CNN is that it contains the most North American news. Personally, I prefer BBC world or SKY and when I am in America, I watch FOX.
Anyway, for now, we have cancelled CNN on the big screen and instead play highlights of the shows and the Travel Channel. Thanks for all the suggestions, we both wish you well.
DANNY – Your vote has been cast and you won.
NANETTE – Hello Nani. I am sure the last few days have been very painful for you and the family. Heidi and I continue to think of you. I am glad I got to meet her on the Carnival Ecstasy many years ago. Through all your sadness I see that you still have time to think of Alan. What a special person you are. Muchos huggos.
ESMEEK – We will take care of your group and I will make sure I give them a big shout out. Can you have one of them leave me a note at the information desk and if there is anybody in particular you want me to say Hello to, let me know.
Ahh, Liza Minelli and Tina Turner. True legends and two great suggestions.
Wish you were here with us, all the best.
CARRIE FROM HEIDELBERG – I am glad you enjoyed the wonderful weather when you sailed with us in June and you will definitely notice a difference now. I am glad you enjoyed the concerts on the big screen and hopefully one day soon you will be back to watch more with us. So far, Celine Dion has had more votes than anyone for Britney’s replacement and I will let you all know the final result. Heidi and I send our best to you in Germany with a big “Auf Wiederhoren.”
CAROL SCHOENBERGER – I am glad you enjoyed the breakfast description, it was pure fantasy, probably like you, all I had was oatmeal. We do offer 24 hour news on the cabin TV’s and since taking CNN off the big screen, we have not had any comments asking where it is. I loved your suggestions for Britney’s replacement and another great vote for Tina, who is just behind Celine at the moment. Thank you for thinking of Alan. Thank you for being the fun person you are.
LINDA HERNACKI – Hello Linda. I guess the reason I call Alan ugly is because he is. It was his ugliness that stopped us getting any girls to come within 50 feet of us. I promise to post a photo of him when he is better and he will be. Thank you so much for mailing the package to Heidi and I. Heidi was thrilled to hear that you have a Dachshund called Rascal. Heidi’s favorite aunty has the same dog called Sara and she, like Rascal, is a big lump of fun. One day soon you can sit together and tell dog stories and I wish you and Mike the richest blessings.
LADY FATIMA – Ok, now I am scared.
BLUE MAX BOB – We agreed with you and CNN has been removed. You are also very correct, if a world news story occurs, I will put this on the big screen. Thanks very much for your input and thank you for reading the blog thingy.
LINDSEY B – Barry White, wouldn’t that be fantastic, although I can only imagine some of the attempts to copy his voice would be rather comical. Heidi thinks he was fantastic. Keep warm in Buffalo and see you soon.
GIRLDOG – I guess not too many people have the ability to tune things out like you do. It is for that reason that we have removed CNN. There has never been and there never will be a shortage of comments from guests that are amusing, to say the least. As requested, I will continue to share them with you. Hope all is well and thanks for your posting.
RUTH JAMISON – You are correct, we are counting down the days to our holidays. I am glad you enjoyed the photos and my description of breakfast. Maybe I should be a food writer…….mmmm, there is a thought. Thank you for saying how much you enjoy my morning shows and before you know it, I will be saying Good Morning Ruth on the Carnival Splendor.
My best to you and the family.
VIKKI AND MATT TILL – I am glad I gave you some Friday laughs and it would be nice one day for us to all have laughs together in person. Hope your Buckeyes are doing well and if I would have a Buckeye hat, they would do even better.
All the best to you both.
JOHN FRIEDMANN – CNN is still available in the cabins and I think John, we have found a happy medium by only playing it as and when a large story breaks. I loved your suggestion of Rod Stewart, he is one of my all time favorites, I promise to do something special for Heidi and have even considered super sizing her fries when I take her to McDonalds. Most importantly, I want to say a big thank you for your kind thoughts for Alan. It means the world to me. Cheers mate.
LINDA, MUM OF DJ – How fantastic to hear that you played the part of Gloria Estefan in the Carnival Legends show during your recent Carnival Victory cruise and thank you for your kind comments about the cast. I agree with you that Tina would be a wonderful replacement for Britney and she has now tied for first place with Celine. I am looking forward to seeing the photos of DJ and Heidi and I hope we get to meet your fantastic son one day soon.
MARC G – I have heard that laser tag is very popular on the Carnival Liberty and I understand that very soon it will be a fleet-wide addition. You will be happy to know that CNN, FOX (SKY) and other news stations are available 24 hours in the cabin but for now we will keep it off the big screen, unless something major develops. Now, as for your suggestions on Britney’s replacement, the best has to be Axel Rose. I can just imagine a retired gentleman from Florida singing “Welcome To The Jungle.” I am sure that will bring the house down.
Great posting Marc and many thanks.
LFTTNSFCF – How about that for a great idea. A Carnival Legends show featuring the orchestra musicians as Glenn Miller and Louis Armstrong etc. We certainly have the most talented orchestra on board as you will see for yourself in 12 days time. The cigars are on me and Todd will be looking after you.
Finally, I know I am British but nothing beats BBC news, just my opinion. See you soon and best to Mrs. Missing the you-know-what.
PAT AND FRANK – I see you are missing the Mediterranean sunshine. Welcome back from your September Carnival Freedom cruise and it sounds like you had a fantastic time. Goodness, it sounds cold up there in Canada, try and stay warm. Heidi is thrilled that you have sent her two Starbucks mugs and we will look forward to drinking a cup of Tim Horton’s coffee from them. Hope to see you soon and thanks again for reading the blog.
DIVE TRASH – Can anybody tell me where the expression “Raining Cats and Dogs” comes from?
Anyway, a big hello to you in the town of Hulk Hogan New Jersey. It seems your idea of Cher and Barbara Streisand are very popular however, and please forgive me……….who the heck ……….is Gwen Stefani? See you on the Bloggers Cruise, not long now.
MIKE L – That’s a big pair of Speedo’s, however, I will have them specially made and hope to see you wearing them soon.
OKTEACH – Another vote for Celine Dion, however, I agree with you, the theme song from the ship beginning with “T” may not be the way to go, to be honest though, I don’t know any other songs she sings. Thanks for reading the blog and post again soon.
RUSS AND NINA FRANKLIN – I love the expression you used to describe Britney……..pop tart…….very funny.
Tina Turner has now taken the lead and I will let you know the final results. I am glad you enjoyed the Carnival Pride so much and I agree with whoever that comedian was, when he said about the whole ship being x-rated. Some of the art work is very risqué. However, it is a beautiful ship and one of our most popular. Thank you so much for the kind words for Heidi, myself and Alan and you both continue to be such wonderful supporters of the blog thingy.
TERRI 910 – And it’s neck and neck between the French Canadian lady with the funny teeth and Proud Mary. I promise, no Bruce Springsteen. The fact that you offered to light a candle for my mate Alan is remarkable and his family and I appreciate your kind gesture so much. Thank you for being such a great friend.
LADY JADE – Me too.
MYRA BUSHNELL – And Tina takes the lead. I have no idea who wrote the posting about Fatima but just the mention of the word has my bottom cheeks clenching together tighter than two Scotsmen. How was your horror night at Universal Studios, I hear those shows are wonderful. Let me know more. I would love to support the Jacksonville Jaguars but unfortunately, I don’t have a hat. Thank you for your continuing thoughts for my friend Alan and Heidi sends you her best.
TERESA AND PAUL B – As mentioned, Cher already makes a guest appearance. I totally agree with you about Britney, she could have had it all and it’s a real shame. We will see you soon and hopefully the blog will keep you going. All the best.
SHELLY P – You are so right, you can’t please all the people all the time. A lot of my time is spent putting our small fires and sometimes I really need to remind myself that the big picture shows everyone is having the most fantastic vacation when they cruise with us. Heidi sends you her best and thank you so much for thinking of Alan.
We return your best wishes to you and your family.
IVANA – Welcome back home and I hope you had a fantastic trip. Thank you for thinking of all your blogging friends on this posting and you mentioned both Tina and Celine so it’s still very close. Send us some information about your trip. We would love to here about the beautiful city of Prague. Welcome home.
KEVROB – It is such a shame that, since the world has changed, tours of the bridge and engine room are no longer allowed. Thank you for your posting and thank you for your service in the United States Navy.
KAREN TESSIER/EDMONSON – I did feel a little guilty after calling the ship that complained (allegedly) about the volume related to the big screen “the Snitch of the Seas”. This morning however, I woke up thinking………..am I bovvered?
I have not forgotten your Christmas ornament and the gift shop manager Justine has told me they will restock these in the coming days and as soon as they are here we will proceed. The wineries in Italy are amazing and we will add more soon.
KATHIE – Thanks for thinking of Alan and thank you for the kind words, all the best to you and your family.
MONICA AND AL – While we are here in Europe we have taken CNN off the big screen. I am sure this will be re-examined upon the ship’s return to the U.S. You asked about the time zones for the T.V. stations our ships show in the Caribbean. Now, this may seem strange but the national signal that goes to all the ships sailing in the Caribbean go through Denver, Colorado. I am not sure what time zone that is but the ABC and NBC stations go through there while the CBS station goes through Nashville, Tennessee. Hope this helps you and let me know if you need any more information. All the best.
RAYMOND CZENSZAK – Having seen the Carnival Legends show, I remember like you do, the warm reception Ms Spears received. How times have changed. You mentioned Celine, which puts her back in the lead. I hope you enjoy your Carnival Liberty cruise and I hope you will cruise with us again soon.
KATHIE – Your vote won.
JUDI – Thank you. Thinking of Alan is so very kind and I really hope your prayers will be answered. Thank you so much.
TOM AND JANE – I just read the article in the St. Petersburg Times. I had forgotten all about that one as I have done so many interviews in the past months. Thank you so much and I am so excited to receive my Aston Martin coffee mug. You are both great friends.
MARY KAY – I too am very sorry to hear that we will not be together on your December 8 Carnival Freedom cruise. You will have a wonderful time, I promise. I wish you both a very happy anniversary.
Please keep reading the blog thingy.
KATHY KROLL – Tom Jones. He is now in third place. Would Paul play him in the show?

WE NOW MOVE TO ONE OR TWO QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS FROM THE BLOG CALLED “THE QUEEN….REVISITED”

BIG ED – Thanks mate. I am always nervous after writing a ship review and words of congratulations from you mean the world. Thanks again.
SHERYL PELTON – Goodness, you are so kind. Thank you for saying how much you enjoyed the review of the Queen Victoria. Soon we will be on vacation and I do promise at least two blogs a week. Mostly, thank you for thinking of my friend Alan and also your kind words for Heidi and I. Many thanks, all the best.
KATHIE – I am not sure if “Gobsmacked ” will be well received by some of my friends from Cunard. However, hopefully they will see that it truly expressed how I felt. Hope you are enjoying the blog and best wishes.
M@&RT – Welcome back guys. Hope you had a wonderful time with us. We miss you here.
PEANUTS – I am sure the package will be here in Rome tomorrow and thank you so very much in advance. The Queen Victoria is truly stunning and I hope one day to sail on her as I am sure do many of the people who read this blog thingy.
NICO R – I will indeed be the Cruise Director on the 8-day Carnival Splendor cruise. The ports are fantastic and I hope we sail together for what will be a super experience. Cheers!
CARL HARMON – Go Red Socks! Did they win their second game?
LUIS TORRES – How was your Carnival Sensation cruise and may I say many congratulations on your 26th wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, Heidi and I will be on vacation during your December cruise but I know you will have a fantastic time. We both send our best wishes to you and please keep reading the blog thingy.
JENN AND MEYER – I do not blame you for saying “One day I would love to sail on the Queen Victoria.” I hope that day becomes reality for you. You asked about what tours are friendly for your kids who are aged 2 and 4. The best tour I can suggest is the Camp Carnival tour. Their tour will include fun, playtime, naptime and as many chicken nuggets as they can eat. This will leave you to enjoy our wonderful excursion program. What do you think? Let me know and our best to the entire family.
CAPTAIN CHUCK – The library on the Queen Victoria was, without doubt, one of the highlights of my visit.
I hope things are settling down and you and the family continue to be in our thoughts.
DAVE AND MELANIE MYERS – Maybe one day your dream of stepping foot aboard the Cunard liner Queen Victoria will come true. I am glad you enjoyed the review and thank you so much for taking the time to read it.
All the best.
LORI ANN JEFFERS – Your thoughts on traveling alone on Carnival Cruise Lines and how safe you find it were so wonderful to read. In fact, your whole posting was a wonderful advert on what makes Carnival so many people’s first choice when it comes to taking a cruise. Thank you for spending time with us in Europe and I am glad your dream of seeing these magnificent places came true. So far, no news on the 2009 Europe cruises, however, as soon as I know, you will know I promise. Thank you again for those wonderful words and I hope to see you again very soon.
JIMNI – Welcome back and how nice that one of the first things you posted were your kind thoughts and prayers for Alan and Nanette. Hope to hear from you again and see you before you know it.
LESLEY – I am not sure I understand what you mean when you say “Your blog is over the top for Cunarders, we expect the best but do not gloat about it when we get it.” When Carnival Corporation invested its money with the purchase of Cunard we knew we were buying a magnificent company. I am proud to be part of Carnival Corporation which includes Cunard and having seen the incomparable Queen Victoria I really wanted to tell the world and the 800,000 bloggers how truly special this ship is. I apologize if in your opinion the blog was over the top, maybe you could educate me in advising what tone the blog should have taken. I just wanted the world to know how lucky we are. Some people reading this blog may never be lucky enough to cruise with Cunard and I therefore hope my blog is one way they can experience everything that is Cunard. I am sure you understand. Wishing you all the best and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
LAUREN – The mega suite was the only cabin that we were able to see and it was truly impressive. I am sure however all the staterooms are magnificent. The bathtub however was a scene stealer.
JULIE GANTT – Thank you, you are too kind.
CHRIS PLUMB – Welcome back home and I am really happy that you had such a wonderful time here on board. I have passed your congratulations to Gary and Ron and Heidi as well and I do hope that we get to sail with you again in the near future. All the best until then.
BIG ED – You are correct, we really have to play catch up with Princess as they now have the ability to book spa appointments on-line. I will give this all my attention. Cheers mate.

That’s all I have time for today, more of course to follow tomorrow.

To finish with today (I have a 5:30am start with debarkation tomorrow) lets chat about this cruise. The guests seem very happy and they have been very lucky with the weather, especially this time of year. The shows were brilliantly received and apart from the usual comments I think that once again the friendly crew of the good ship Carnival Freedom can be proud.

Today, I also completed the new Past Guest video that will now be sent to the office for editing etc. The theme I used was “Welcome Home” and hopefully you will all enjoy it……….it should be out to the fleet sometime soon. One of the things I did was to interview a wide demographic of guests and just have them “chat” about why they keep coming back to Carnival. Most people I interviewed listed the value for money, the friendly crew, the food and the entertainment.

A few people I interviewed however said something rather different and we will not be using their interviews……….here is a transcript of what was said by the first of those …………..the wonderful Carmen Tommasi.

“I have been on 18 Carnival Cruises and in November I am booked on the Carnival Spirit, in December I am doing Christmas and New Year on the Carnival Liberty and in February I am on Holland America for three weeks.. I am 77 years old and the reason I cruise so often is that it is cheaper for me to live on a cruise ship than in Sarasota. I get all the food I want and shows and someone to look after me. My family lives in New Jersey and are too busy to see me so I just cruise.”

The reason I won’t use her is not the fact that she has mentioned Holland America, they are family after all. It was also not the fact that she cruises to ummmmmm……save money, in fact that is a great point. The value of a Carnival cruise is obviously so good that she feels she can have a better quality of life onboard than in Sarasota.

Nope, the reason I won’t be using her is that the piece about her family not visiting her was said with such ………sadness……..that I really don’t think it portrays the happy image we are looking for, I actually felt quite sorry for her.

I have many happy memories of this cruise but the overriding two will be the couple I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery. Then there is the letter posted on today’s blog from Mrs. Masterson…………..both were so inspiring and hearing that we brought some laughter into lives which had been full of sadness………..well………..I am …….I think……….well…………you know.

I would liked to have finished the blog on that note but I cannot because…………..I messed up………..oh…….did I mess up and one guest is not happy with me at all.

Tonight, I took the Entertainment Staff to dinner at the Supper Club to thank them for all their hard work. What is it about this place that gets me into trouble…………….remember the man who threw his napkin at me?

Anyway, it was a nice evening right up until just before the main course when a guest waved me over for a photograph. The man was in his forties and the lady a lot older. As I posed with them both and the waitress took the photo, I looked at the man and said “I hope you and your Mother have had a great time……………..he looked at me and said, “That’s not my mother – this is my wife”…………………………………….oops !

Goodnight

Your Friends

John and Heidi

I would love to see that area of France. The pictures were so inviting. The movie about the Man in the Iron Mask is one of my favorites. The best movies made are about people from our history, don’t you think?

Hearing that you’re getting ready for the Freedom to come to the USA is making me really excited knowing that in only 5 1/2 months we are going to be on the ship enjoying the extremely needed sunshine and relaxation. Should we book our excursions now or on the ship?

Don’t worry about your slip of the tongue on the guest’s wife versus his mother. It could be they get that alot???? HA!

  • I see Carnival Corp has increased the dividend to $0.40/share – and increase of 14%! Woohoo!

    http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/071017/clw016.html?.v=101

When I combine with my shareholder’s credit that’s an even better return on my investment.

  • Hi John and Heidi,
Just read the letter from Annette Masterson.
It stopped me dead in my tracks.
It certainly puts all my moans and groans in perspective. As I said before I think, you’re one great human being. We have never met but you would have made one great mate.
I just remembered we beat your lot ( Southend )
in the LDV final or what ever you call it a couple of years ago at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.
Eleven days to go, see you then.

  • John, My husband and I , with our friends, just
returned from our cruise on the Freedom.
Just to let you know, knees must be
covered by both men and women when
visiting Vatican and Blue Mosque. Wear
long pants. Also you mentioned no
passports would be needed for leaving Rome
airport, we had to show them many times.
We loved our cruise, especially you, looking
    forward to another European cruise.
We need info on British Isle cruise.
    Thanks again for being you,
    The Binghams

  • Tina Turner is a natural Legend. Celine Dion is too boring. I still think Dolly Parton would be great.

Gwen Stephani is (was?) the lead singer for No Doubt but she has solo work, too. She’s one stylin’ babe and very well known.

There have been articles about how it is cheaper to live on a cruise ship than in most assisted living places. And certainly much, much more pleasant. We’re considering it if we stay healthy.

So glad to hear things are cooling down. Highs here are still hitting 90. Well, at least we’re out of the 100s now. I’m looking forward to cooler weather… and meeting you face-to-face of course.

  • John, I don’t believe you made that mistake. In this day and age of anything goes as far as marriage. I can just see the look on his wife’s face and feel the knife in your back. I sure hope Fatima is not her daughter.

Speaking of Fatima did you see her Halloween card for you that she posted on my blog; http://ekonefe.wordpress.com/2007/10/12/117/

Hi John, just wanted to drop you a quick note. We have had the pleasure of cruising with you many times in the past. We are booked on the Freedom for the Oct.28th TA crossing. So sorry to hear that you and Hedi will not be aboard. We certainly hope your great friend Alan does well and you get some much needed R&R. We are great long time friends with Kuki and Geela of Cruisemates. We are also sailing on the Freedom next April 26, 2008 for the TA crossing back to Europe. We have been platnium members for quite awhile and have requested the 8:00 pm dinner seating for the Oct. 28th cruise. please asked the matre de if we could possibly have a table for two at that seating. Many thanks. We will try to stop by your little cocktail party the first night before dinner. Our stateroom is # 8452. We have really enjoyed reading your blog. Much great information. Congratulations on your special award!! Well deserved. Hope to see you soon on board the Freedom before you leave.John & Priscilla

    Hello,
Hope all is well. The pictures of the “new Carnival Inspiration” were wonderful but we are getting spoiled, no wrap-around balcony so it would really be roughing it for us if we sail on the “new Carnival Inspiration”. The question was asked a couple of days ago on our thoughts regarding what to play on the big screen. It has been a couple of months since we sailed but as I remember Carnival does not tie people to their chairs therefore they can move if they don’t like what is playing. Anyhow two reasons we are writing today 1) How is Alan doing and just as importantly how is Alison and the kids holding up? And secondly is to share the good news. We have completed paying for the Blogger cruise, our airline tickets are paid for, the hotel reservations are made and our Blogger shirts are ordered —-WE ARE ON OUR WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi, John,

Poor guy…even trying to be nice you manage to get into trouble. It’s really hard to know anymore who’s with whom, since not only do young women marry much older men, but these days, vice versa as well (think Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, for example). And, of course, it’s considered soooo not PC to notice! We love you anyway. And you are wonderfully generous to care so much for the Montgomerys and the Mastersons.

The pictures of Isle Sainte-Marguerite are lovely and make me kind of “home-sick.” Not for that particular area, but France in general, as we lived near Paris for almost three years (a long time ago). It was a wonderful experience, in spite of the French…just joking…as the country is incredibly beautiful. I always thought of it as sort of a miniturization of the US of A…since you can go “from the mountains, to the prairie, to the oceans white with foam” in just a few hours drive. What I liked best though, was that the forests were so dense the air almost looked green. And of course the wine and cheese! Anyway, thanks for the pictures!

I, too, find it sad that the lady from Sarasota cruises so often because her family seems to ignore her, but that situation probably repeats in lots of families these days. Everyone is just so busy. Don’t know about England, but here in the states we seem to have bought into the notion that you have to be doing “something” every waking moment…working, taking kids to practice or play this or that, participating in group activities (sports, clubs, volunteering). What ever happened to lying in the grass and watching the clouds drift by???

But it may also be true that the numbers of elderly people cruising frequently will increase tremendously in the coming years because of money. You do know the “joke” that regularly makes the e-mail rounds about how much cheaper it is to live on a cruise ship than in a nursing home???? You guys should probably add extra “persons needing assistance” cabins, and perhaps beef up the medical staff.

By the way, the new ship’s drill does make more sense.

And lastly, I’m glad Tina is leading, but would have liked Carly just as well. Love her “You’re So Vain.”

Hey, if you have a CD player, get a recording of Joe Cocker’s “You Can Keep Your Hat On,” dress Heidi in her fancy lingerie (or her t-shirt) and a hat, and take it from there! Be sure you lock the door.

    Let the holiday begin!!!

    Myra

PS: Hello to Alan and family, and they’re still in my prayers.

That was so kind of you to give Tom and Annette a special evening. Even as a military family, (BIL ~ Lt Col who flies BlackHawks) I am still at a loss as to what to say when I meet someone who has had such a loss.

On the Victory, one of the songs I sang in karaoke is God Bless the USA. One man came up to me and thanked me for singing the song. He had a son that was killed during Desert Storm and is buried at Arlington. He said they have someone sing that song at every Memorial Event. He said the pride he feels when he hears that song helps buffer the pain of his loss. All I could do was give him a hug and shed a tear. There were no words.

I am so excited to see Todd doing so well. All I wrote in my notes from that cruise was Todd. (no last name) So I am hoping it was the same one. He was such a gem on the Conquest December 2002-January 2003 (New Year’s Cruise) If my memory serves me right, he was a social host hosting karaoke (this was before they had designated karaoke hosts). I do remember writing on my comment card that he would be a Cruise Director one day.

We just booked an “unofficial” B2B (since it is the same port but different ships) for the end of 2008.
We are going to sail the Freedom 11-30 and then transfer to the Splendor on 12-06 for a total of 13 days. We are driving down to Ft Lauderdale…so I can pack like Cleopatra headed down the Nile!!!!

To steal a line from Malcolm…”woo hoo”!!!!

  • Your blog had over 200 comments John!

Hope you are doing well. The seasons are turing and fall is inching closer…as you have observed.

I really hope I get to meet you in person in July (so so far away…) on the inaugural sailing of the Splendor….that will be the highlight of the trip…and its the first time my grandparents have been on Carnival… so what better cruise to chose!

Hope you are doing well, and your finger is better (i hope it is…with 200+ comments your going to need it!)

    Best Regards,

  • John,

A line from Brittany: “Oops, I did it again”. Kind of sums up your last boo boo. I know you were just trying to be your kind self. Hope to get the chance to cruise with you again. Would be the best thing on the cruise if you were with us Feb. 2nd on the Holiday. Only a 5 day cruise, but Mobile is the nearest port to michigan I believe, and the price was right. Enjoy your time off, and do not change anything about you. You are THE BEST!

    Barry

  • Thanks for the laugh :)

I do have a question about the Splendor that I can’t seem to find anywhere. Thought maybe you would be the person to ask. There is suppose to be a winter garden and ceremonial tea house, but thats all the information I can find on it. Not one press release on what it will actually entail. Do you have any ideas where I could find this info? Thanks so much! Carla ;)

  • Hi John – Well, I am mailing the package tomorrow, just one more thing to include in it, a picture of my two dogs, Rascal and Lily Belle, which I know Heidi will get a kick out of seeing. You are so ready to go home aren’t you? Won’t be long now, just about 11 days huh? By the time you read this it will be 10 days. WOW, I bet you have so much to do to get ready to leave. Yes, please keep us updated on your visit with Alan and his recovery, we all want to know. You have been getting so many comments lately, you had over 225 on your last blog, wow! You are famous! Ha! Ha! Well, on Friday night I will have my grandson Jacob spend the night and we are gonna watch a new DVD I got, Evan Almighty, it is funny, saw it in the movies a few months ago. Then we will go to Toys R Us on Saturday to LOOK around, need some hints as to what he wants for Christmas. While we are at Toys R Us, Mike will be having a Garage Sale to get rid of what he calls CLUTTER around the house, he has over 250 VHS video’s he will sell for 25 cents each as we are now buying DVD’s. He has lots of other stuff, like Christmas decorations we no longer use, if you ever saw our outside Christmas display you would be amazed, looks like the OSMOND Lights at Disney. People come from all over to see our light display and Mike plays Santa to the neighborhood kids too. Anyway, we will have a long weekend, take care. Your friends, Mike & Linda

God Bless you Annette and Tom. Thank-you for your son and his ultimate sacrifice. I get the need to buy them dinner on your own expence. It is important. Prioritys are still straight. Even from the doghouse! Thinking of Alan. Will you be by his side soon? Please for his sake, lay off the jelly beans soon….

    Yours,
    Kathie

  • Ah, John!

Another day, another opportunity to excel and you’ve done it again. Your words about the Montgomery’s and Masterson’s ring so true. So many people have inspiring tales to tell, tales that humble me, lift my spirits and bring a tear to my eye… all at the same time. God bless them all.

I’m looking forward to seeing the new Past Guest video soon. I’m booked on two sailings for next year and still have one to schedule. Please do me the favor of letting me know what vessel you’ll be on in the last three or four months of ‘08 as I’d love to have the pleasure of sailing with you.

How is your mate, our friend, Alan? I pray that he improves daily.

I’ll not take any more of your time as I’m sure you’re even more heavily tasked than usual

Take care, my friend. Offer my ‘howdies’ to Heidi and the good Roberto!

    Cheers!

Good afternoon Mr. Heald. I totally agree with you involving the life jackets. My first cruise I wasn’t prepared for the life jackets and I had no awareness of how put it on properly. Really even after our muster station no one really showed me how. Your new way will assist everyone who has a problem. Thank you. I’m really happy that Alan is improving. Yes, I think he and I even though they aren’t the same problem we’ve experienced a serious brain operation. If I can help in anyway please ask. I’ve experienced a tramatic thing in my life and Alan is experiencing something now.The ” oops problem with the gentleman involving his wife/ mother I couldn’t stop laughing. I think you should bring some of your jokes to Alan. He would definitely get a kick out of them. I’m getting very excited about my cruise but everytime I think of it, I also realize that You & Heidi won’t be there. Oh well. Let me know how Alan is doing. Ciao my friend.

  • John:

Here is a funny story for you, I can so appreciate the wife comment. Once when I was a restaurant manager I stopped by a table to see how everything was going, I approached a woman and a much younger man and asked how did your son like his dinner. Well to my surprise the lady in a rather loud tone informed me she had no children but her husband loved the meal! Ouch, I promised myself no matter how obvious ~ never to go there again ….

Hope all is well with Heidi and Alan ~

  • John:

I would suggest that you re-think the idea of replacing Britney in the Legends show. Seriously, she is no worse than some of the other icons in the show..e.g. James Brown (Prison time, serious drug use etc.)…Elvis Presley (Serious Drug use, died of an overdose? Madonna (need I say more). If you remove Britney, you have to examine the others with worse transgressions in their lives as well. All of the stars have some sort of flaws, but it doesn’t detract from their “Stardom”…their talent and popularity always seems to carry them through.

I hope you’re not over reacting to a couple of guests “outrage”…Personally I have seen several realy humorous guest as Britney, and I say she belongs, if for nothing than comic value.

Tim Kriebel, MCPO, US Navy Retired.

  • Thanks for the heads up on Brent. We are going “nowhere” tomorrow on the Miracle and I will certainly razz him with “thats Johns Joke” . We are celebrating my husbands 60th birthday with a quickie get away. We are also sailing on the Splendor’s maiden voyage to the Baltic. I hope to meet Ruth there and to see you and Heidi again!

  • Hi, John.

Just to let you know – - The Cleveland Indians have hung the Red Socks out to dry. This is a “best out of 7″ series to be the Americna League champions. The Indians are 3 wins to 1 over the Red Socks, so one more win over the Socks and the Indians go to the World Series. Woo hoo!!

Most important, though, is hearing that Alan is improving after his first procedure. My prayers each night before I go to sleep include Alan, his family, and you. I pray that Alan is given the strength to endure the long surgery that he faces, and that the added strength of your presence there to help him after the surgery will hold his family up during the healing process.

Now for something completely different – - I have a question. My daughter and I don’t remember the logistics of the airport in Rome. Last year, we arrived on the same plane, retrieved our luggage, did the customs thing, met up with the Carnival representative, purchased our tour, and went on our way. This year, we arrive on different airlines and at different times. Jennifer arrives at 6:

  • OOPS! I pushed the button before finishing my question! So – -
Jennifer arrives at 6:15 a.m., I arrive at 7:25 and Karen arrives at 7:50. Is there a comfortable place where we can wait for each other after we pick up our luggage. . . check in with the Carnival representative? We plan on taking a tour together. Do we keep our luggage with us so that it is loaded onto the same bus that we take our tour on?

See you in just over a week!

    Sue (and Jennifer and Karen)

  • Hi John,

Explanations of the origins of “raining cats and dogs” can be found here:

    http://www.idiomsite.com/raincatsand.htm

    You learn something new everyday.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear of the life vest changes. Standing around in those things, while necessary, is really uncomfortable. Particularly for those of us “blessed” with an ample bosom. I’ll never forget my first cruise on the Inspiration. Our life vests were those really solid, thick, foam rubber ones. When I put it on as requested, it stuck straight out in front of me. Every time I turned to explain something to my niece, I whapped her upside the head with it. Poor girl finally learned to duck after the 3rd or 4th time. The cloth covered ones are better, but still pretty uncomfortable to stand around in.

Gwen Stefani (www.gwenstefani.com) is the former lead singer of “No Doubt” (ska pop band) and now has had a number of hits on her own as well. She has more talent and style in her little finger than Bratney could ever hope to have.

One last cruise then vacation! Hooray for you and Heidi.

    Cheers,

    Laura

Looking forward to the Bloggers Cruise even more.

  • John,
I am very familiar with the types of people who do not want to participate in the Safety drill, they are the same ones who don’t want to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle because it will mess up their hair, so will your head hitting the cement at 60 MPH dumba$$! Looking forward to the Speedos.

  • John

Why are pax referred to by crew as “Kones”?
Where/how did this term “Kones” originate?

As well, being a crew member on deck during the life boat drill, I can see the difference that the new life jacket procedure makes. Guests are quite happy to remove the fashionable jackets with all the bells and whistles. However, while they are removing the life jackets the announcements continue and not one passenger is listening to the information. Perhaps, a one minute break between the announcements should be made to allow that pax to remove the L/J’s and to get their attention again.

Oh, and why can’t I find any peanut butter on this ship in crew or staff mess ? lol
    Cheers mate
    Thank You

Ps. No wories about the foot in mouth, we wouldn’t be true males if we didn’t put our foot in our mouths once in a while.

  • John,
I’ve been reading your blog fairly regularly and have an answer for you concerning “raining cats and dogs.” One theory is that the racket made by a storm sounds like the thunderous noise made by fighting cats and dogs. Or, it may arise from the era of thatched roofs when downpours would bring cats and dogs dozing atop houses down onto the occupants.

The leading theory seems to be that animals have been associated with weather for centuries: cats stand for rain, dogs for wind (all info stolen from the Internet).

We sailed with you on the Freedom back in September and are reliving the trip every time we look at the 897 photos that I shot.

If you’ll recall, we’re Mr. and Mrs. Idiot from Lansing, (Ohio) Ah-hi-ah!

Thanks for the great time and the side-splitting laughs! Be well.

  • John,

I like the new procedure for the safety drills. We were so hot standing there and squeezing together that it was very difficult to pay attention. Having the life jackets off while you explain the safety portion of the drill would be much more comfortable.
Also, the in your own words section today was very nice. Thank you for treating that couple to their dinner. I would like to think I would do the same if I had the opportunity. They have made the ultimate sacrifice for my freedom and I am deeply grateful.

Just got back from that wonderful ride on the Freedom…awesome. But, I really am curious… are the “Eikels (sp?) real or not???

  • Ha! Good one John!
That will get you in the doghouse more than your Heidi using your t-shirt. I’ve made that same mistake before calling someone their mother when it was his wife, sister, etc. Oh well..Live and learn.
Hope all is going well and thinking of you as you prepare to help the ship come back across the pond.
    Talk to you soon!

This is a question for the seasoned cruisers – - – I was under the impression that all meals were at no charge while on the ship so I was confused on John paying for the Masterson’s meal at the supper club. Is this an extra we would need to pay for on our cruise?

  • So glad Sue Grohol is a Tribe Fan too! The Tribe is giving Boston a run for its money!!!

John, hope Alan is doing well. I am sure you are anxiously counting down the days until you go on vacation, so you can visit him and see him with your eyes. (Maybe not so good if he is as ugly as you say!)

What was up with all the comments yesterday? It took a long time to read through them and I am sure it will be a tedious thing to answer all of them!
Hope your injured finger is up to the task.

Give my best to Heidi. How about a blog from her before you leave on vacation, giving us her perspective on preparing to leave the ship? It would be very interesting.

  • John, the extra things that you do personally for people like Tom & Annette and the Montgomery’s demonstrate what a special person you are. Carnival truely is fortunate to have you as a Cruise Director.

    John -

I was going to comment under the Fun Ship Reborn blog, but with 294 comments, I feel like my response might get lost in the cloud that your head must be in from having that many comments.

The TA is getting close – but first, another joke

A Catholic priest and a nun were taking a rare afternoon off and enjoying a round of golf. The priest stepped up to the first tee and took a mighty swing.

He missed the ball entirely and said “$h!t, I missed.”

The good Sister told him to watch his language.

On his next swing, he missed again. “$h!t , I missed.”

“Father, I’m not going to play with you if you keep swearing,” the Nun said tartly.

The priest promised to do better and the round continued. On the 4th tee, he misses again. The usual comment followed.

Sister is really mad now and says, “Father John, God is going to Strike you dead if you keep swearing like that.”

On the next tee, Father John swings and misses again. “$h!t, I missed.”

A terrible rumble is heard and a gigantic bolt of lightning comes out of the sky and strikes Sister Marie dead in her tracks.

And from the sky comes a booming voice ……

    “$h!t, I missed.”

    ———–

As usual, I can not take credit for this joke – it was passed on to me by (I kid you not) a Sister :)

Now, back to business at hand – TA minus 10 days. The people at work are beginning to comment about my attitude. Apparently, its beginning to show. Is there any cure for pre-cruise euphoria?

Give our best to Heidi and Todd.

  • So glad to hear Alan is doing better. We hope it’s not a long, drawn out recovery. If I remember correctly, Alan blamed you for the lack of female companionship when you were younger. Was he on medication when he said that?

I see a lot of Cleveland Indian fans on the blog. John, don’t count out our Red Sox (spelled correctly) yet!! However the Red Sox/Indians series turns out, you’ll be getting all the Red Sox Championship hats. Besides, the Indians beat the Yankees. They can’t be all bad!

Do you think that Heidi might be wearing that t-shirt because she knows you’ll be looking for it?? Then she’ll just have to give it back to you.

Nudge, nudge. Say no more (Monty Python reference).

Best to all. Calm winds, smooth seas and all that other stuff.

    Alan & Chris

  • Hi John,
Quick question for you: Is the Blogger’s cruise sold out?
How is Alan doing? Please tell him our thoughts and prayers are with him always.
    WE MISS HEIDI!
    Elaine

  • John,
How nice of you to pick up the bill for Tom and Annette tonight. I will keep them in my prayers. My husband was in Desert Storm, and I was blessed enough to have him come home. Something nobody tells is, they come home a different person. They never are quite the same person, so I always have all the troops in my thoughts.

Thanks for the great pictures! Are we still going to have great pictures to look forward to when your on holiday?

You know the people that try to get out of the life boat drill are the same people that would be insisting on being the first in line if something would happen on the cruise, or demanding to know what to do and causing chaos.

  • Oh where……. oh where……… oh wheeeeeeeeere in the world can the Freedom beeeee, oh wheeeeeere oh wheeeere can she beeeeeeeee????

Yes I am singing, and I’m patiently waiting to hear all about the goings-on of the Carnival Freedom that left on 10/16. I wish I were a very big fly on the wall of the Lido Deck right now, looking at all the fun, soaking in all the sun and the beautiful Mediterranean Sea!! Looking forward to hearing your cruise stories John! I know my Group is having a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!

One small note: 3 of the passengers in my group never got their luggage in Rome, and are presently on the Cruise with NO change of clothing!!!! So if anyone can spare a dress for formal night……… let them know (Just kiddin’!!)

  • John & Heidi -
I’ve been absent for a while – I’ve moved and taken a new position within my hospital company (Carnival didn’t want me *sniff*), so bear with me…

    1) I’m so glad you are finally getting to take a break. Everyone needs to rest and recharge – it’s human nature.

    2) I am truly sorry to hear about Alan, and hope that this message finds him, Alison, and the kids coping well. We went through something similar in my family recently, and I know how much support from friends and family means to the patient. Hell, Alan has a fan club!

    3) The queen Victoria – WOW! Again, a fantastic review by someone who is appreciative of the life he gets to lead. Bravo!

    4) Love the interviews – I’ve just about caught up with them all.

    5) I’m hoping to be able to join the bloggers’ cruise – we’ll see how forgiving the new facility is on vacation time :)

    6) Yeah for finally changing the lifeboat drill!

    7) GO GATORS! (sorry, had to throw that one on there, all this baseball stuff was getting to me)

I hope someday to get the chance to meet you and your lovely wife – maybe on the TA for the Splendor next year. I hope that all works out at home – I know that Alan will recover splendidly with you goading him on!

  • I’m home where internet is reliable…catching up on your blog posts before I head out of town again. It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve been in Southern France…Loved Nice…now you got me thinking about my younger (wilder?) days (daze?)

Send a hug to SouthernDreams/Bonnie from me.

Getting excited about the bloggers cruise. Can’t wait!!!!

  • That was a great gesture on your part, John, for Annette. Good to hear they’re enjoying things right now after all they’ve been through…

So, since it’s the off-season for the cruises at the moment, is there a noticeable drop in the liveliness of the atmosphere? Or are things onboard still lively compared to what they would be in the summer?

  • Hi John and Heidi! A funny thing happened on my way down the page to write my comment…I ran across Big Ed’s comments about Michigan and Ohio State. East Lansing is the home of Michigan State University, which is a whole different animal from the Michigan Wolverines of the city of Ann Arbor. Even us Buck Nuts know that! And BTW, Go Bucks and Go Tribe! ; )

The main purpose of this post is to say Hooray for the changes in muster drill procedure~It’s a very good change as those life jackets coupled with being crammed together like sardines can be quite suffocating. This will make things so much more tolerable.

And bless your heart for treating the couple to dinner at the Supper Club. You old softy…that was a really sweet thing to do. As always, my best to you and Heidi.

  • Doesn’t Tina Turner live in South France these days? Maybe you could get her to judge herself?

This Splendor godmother thing seems to have stalled. Perhaps you could give Hugh Hefner a call and see if he’ll donate a dozen playmates to do the honors?

  • John,
You got it my friend I’ll let you know what happens with Brent, poor sod has no idea. But I’m sure he will tell your jokes poorly and kill the punch lines. No worries mate I dropped the hammer ( pushes the petrol peddle all the way to the floor )tonight in top gear for you on the way home. Amazing is that while doing 75 mph when you go for all she has no noise no sounds, nothing like driving a jet plane the speedometer just keeps going up I had to let off when she hit 170 mph. Sorry mate I just couldn’t take it but I know she wanted more. One day when your riding in the second seat we will find out what she can really do. Then the two of us will get out so we can put two slender people in and see how much we slow her down ;-) . Off to the ship in the morning, can’t wait. Talk to you when I return, and I will post cruise pics on my blog (click my name on the top left) and a review. Cheers, glad Alan is still ugly but feeling better.
    Kevin
PS Heidi, where is the next blog, we got to get one before you two head home. :-)

    Hi John,
Been back for almost 4 weeks now off the Grand Med cruise, which considering we are from England was the first time we had sailed the Med. Have been reading your blog on a daily basis ever since and it makes us feel like we are still on vacation. However todays temperatures at home dropped into minus with the first frosts and getting up early for work in the dark really brought it home. Still a quick view of the webcam made me feel better. Hope you have a good vacation, but if your spending sometime back home pack the thermals !!

    Good morning John,

Just wanted to say hello and ask about Alan. Is he still doing well after the meningitis & surgery? I know you can’t wait to see him.

Thanks for the info on the life jacket procedures. That’s good news since I’m short & wearing the lifejackets in the heat of Miami for at least 20 minutes is slightly uncomfortable. And I always had trouble figuring out how to put the thing on, no matter how many times I cruises – I felt like I was all thumbs.

You and Heidi are probably excited to be starting your vacation shortly, but also sad to be leaving the Freedom. But just think of all the relaxation, seeing your families & Alan, doing whatever you want to do and not having some grumpy old passenger come over and tell you that no one can speak English or he wants his money back because he didn’t like his shore excursion.

I look forward to the new DVD. I still have last year’s in my desk drawer, but have only watched part of it because I keep forgetting to bring headphones to work.

I too am planning to book the 12/6/08 cruise on the Splendor (unless I can manage to afford the earlier 8-day cruise) just to be able to cruise with you again. I can’t wait for some good old British humor.

    Catch ya’later,
    Carol

  • John:

I was a passenger on the Freedom 9/9 through 9/22. I never had a chance to meet you personally but wanted to thank you for a wonderful trip. One that will be in my memory forever. You are truely a remarkable person and Carnival is lucky to have you. I can’t wait to continue to read your blog. Thank you again for a terrific vacation and keep up the great work!

    Sue

  • Hi John and Heidi
I am safely home from my cruise on the Freedom last week. It was such a pleasure to get to meet the both of you at last. I wish that we could have spent more time together, but I realize it was a busy time for you. I hope Heidi is feeling better now also. Also, thank you so much for the prez’s that you sent. They were most appreciated. I have the picture in the frame with our formal print.
We had such a wonderful time and the only complaint was that we had to leave and come home.
I do have one question: The Eichals (sp), were they real or someone fictional. I say they are real and my Mom says they were fictional. Could you clear this up for us?
One more comment: For the Legends show, why not portray a female country star, such as Reba McIntyre, Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain, etc? There is a male country star, so why not have a female in the same genre? Just a thought.
I hope you have a wonderful vacation. Give my regards to Alan and his family and give hugs to Heidi for me. Take care and hopefully we will be cruising with you again someday soon!!

  • John,

You asked me what I thought about the Entertainment on the Carnival Liberty cruise I just went on. I thought that the cruise director was actually very good compared to my last few cruises where it seemed like the Cruise Directors felt like they had to act like bumbling idiot joksters, in order to make an impression with the passengers. Tea Time, which is very important to my wife and I, was on time and a lot of thought was put into it which we enjoyed, unfortunately, some passengers thought it was a “tea party” and were extremely loud while the musicians struggled to play through the noise. We ended up leaving the event. In the main theater, I did see the one new show (the Broadway one). I was please to see the singers more engaged in the dancing but the show itself lacked the impressiveness I once saw in Carnival shows 5-10 years ago. What ever happend to that “Russian” dance couple with their little son? They were impressive but I haven’t seen them on any ships since maybe 2002?
This was the first cruise where I actually participated in the Trivia contests which I enjoyed, but the events almost seemed like an afterthought to those hosting them.
What my wife and I enjoyed the most was going outside on the Lobby deck (right below the life boats), and reading in the deck chairs there. Unfortunately, the deck chairs always seemed to be stacked up and rope tied by some sort of knot that almost took a magician to untie. Whoever was in charge of those chairs got better by the end of the cruise and with the deck chairs out there, many passengers found (our secret reading area) and it got a bit crowded.
I found it disappointing that most of the evening music in the various lounges does not start until 2130 or so. This is bad for us since we are in bed by about 1000hrs. However, I understand that Carnival needs to cater to the majority which probably stays up late.

  • Dear John,

Between work and a weeks holiday I’m just catching up on the ‘blog thingy. So to catch up, a laundry list of comments!

    1. A very late CONGRATULATIONS! on receiving the SeaTrade award; I’m sure that put a grin on your face for days.

    2. I loved your interview with John Cleese, he’s a favourite (spelt correctly) of mine.

    3. I hope Alan continues to improve. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

    4. The “Carry On” movies always had me in stitches and I miss them. Trying to describe those to my American colleagues is just about impossible! I guess Mel Brooks is the closest the U.S. has come to that style of comedy. I have several of my favourite (again spelt correctly!) jokes/puns for you, none of which I can take credit for…

Your interview with John Cleese reminded me of this one:

Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and George W. Bush were set to face a firing squad in a small Central American country. Bill Clinton was the first one placed against the wall and just before the order to shoot him was given, he yelled out, “Earthquake!” The firing squad fell into a panic and Bill jumped over the wall and escaped in the confusion.

Al Gore was the second one placed against the wall. The squad was reassembled and Al pondered what his old boss had done. Before the order to shoot was given, Al yelled out, “Tornado!” Again the squad fell apart and Al slipped over the wall.

The last person, George W. Bush, was placed against the wall. He was thinking “I see the pattern here, just scream out a disaster and hop over the wall.” As the firing squad was reassembled and the rifles raised in his direction, Bush grinned and yelled, “Fire!”

And here are two pun stories:

Mahatma Ghandi walked barefoot everywhere, to the point that his feet became quite thick and hard. He also was quite a spiritual person. Even when he was not on a hunger strike, he did not eat much and became quite thin and frail. Furthermore, due to his diet, he wound up with very bad breath. Therefore he came to be known as a…….

Super calloused fragile mystic plagued with halitosis!

    And finally,

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack. “Miss Whack, I’d like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday.” Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick, and that it’s okay, he knows the bank manager. Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral. The frog says, “Sure. I have this,” and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Patty explains that she’ll have to consult with the bank manager, and disappears into a back office. She finds the manager and says, “There’s a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral.” She holds up the tiny pink elephant. “I mean, what in the world is this?” The bank manager looks back at her and says…

“It’s a knick-knack, Patty Whack. Give the frog his loan. His old man’s a Rolling Stone.”

    Cheers!
    Anne E.

  • And one more thing – to all those eastern U.S. baseball fans – GO ROCKIES! :-)

  • Dear John,Laura and I were recently on the Freedom for the Med.cruise. We both enjoyed it very much. I want to thank you for reading Laura’s comments about my 70th birthday. I enjoyed speaking with you about Prostate Cancer. I can be reached by email at Zuperzatz@aol.com for any question concerning PC. The person writing should just put Prostate Cancer in the subject area, so I will not delete as spam. I can also be reached by phone and will call back, as I have unlimited long distance capability. My numer is 941-358-0252. Everyone will be called back promptly. No international calls, just email. I have survived for 11 plus years and all the parts are working. Thanks again.

  • Just got back from our wonderful cruise on the Med. It was my 4 th Carnival cruise & I was not disappointed what a great trip. We did 9 excursions & it would be hard to pick out which one was the best, they were all wonderfully planned. Perhaps my favorite was Montserrat, Spain.

The shows on board was great but Iespecially liked the tribute to the Beattles, that was extraordinary. My only disappointment was not seeing enough of you John, you are a funny man.

Thanks again for making our cruise in Europe so special.

  • John & Heidi,

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Your blog is a great success and so uplifting for those of us not on a cruise.

John, you were the cruise director on our very first cruise aboard the Ecstasy. I actually presented you with a photo of my daughter and her friend you with at the Captain’s Cocktail Party. You were so handsome with all that dark hair. I remember you calling Heidi over to see that picture. LOL

I work with special education students during the day and I am also a home based travel agent. I book many groups on Carnival, some of which I am lucky enough to personally escort. It is an added bonus when you are the cruise director!!! I have never known anyone that could make people laugh like you can. No matter how many times I have seen the “Bedtime Story”, I still laugh so hard that I hurt! The time that you interviewed my parents (then married 55 years) at the Love & Marriage Show, and I learned things about my parents that I never knew – and don’t know that I wanted to know………like the fact that when they were first starting to date that my mom would walk by my dad’s house & he would be working under his car and he got some wonderful views of my mom!!! In those days, the girls all wore dresses. Oh my goodness……..!

I would love to send you a photo of you with my daughter, but cannot figure out how to attach it to this blog thingy. If you could tell me how to do it, I would surely refresh your memory with the original picture from the Ecstasy as well.

My husband and I are escorting a group of 32 cruise addicts on the Carnival Valor November 4, 2007. (Last November, we escorted nearly 130 folks on the Miracle.) I just hosted the Pre-Cruise Party for them. I do this for all my groups so that they can meet each other and we go over everything that they need to know so that the trip is a success. After each group returns from their cruise, I host a Post Cruise Party where I show a DVD of the video and pictures that I edit together from our trip. We re-live our vacation and have such fun doing it.

Any clue when you plan to write that book you promised? I know it will be a best seller.

In closing, I just want to say that over the years, I have witnessed the wonderful job that you and Heidi both do. You sincere kindness, caring, and the gift of laughter are a great inspiration to all of us.

    Sea ya,
    Cathy Pietras

  • Hi John,
Our congratulations on your fine award! Also many thanks for the wonderful Freedom cruise in September. We are already booked on the Splendor’s Dover-Civitavecchia cruise in September and on the Florida – Buenos Aires cruise in January 2009 as well. Hope to see you on those cruises!
The Inspiration looks great! Looking at the pictures of that beautiful ship it gives me some very nice memories of the first four ships that were built in Helsinki, Finland and I had the pleasure to work on them. I started on the Mardi Gras in 1983 and worked on 10 Carnival ships ending 14 years later on the Fascination. Carnival is our cruise line. On the Freedom we enjoyed all the exellent artists and shows, and appreciated the remarkable job of yours very much. Thanks John!
    See you on the Splendor!
