Hello John and Heidi!

About home education - you know, hundren years ago it was the only valuable education in Russia - every wealthy family hired teachers for the children even the royal (Tsar) family. And that education was the best. It's coming back now - I've heard that people who have enough money revive this tradition. Sometimes it's a single teacher, governess, sometimes a dozen of teachers of different subjects who visit children during the day. I think it's cool - the level of school education is coming down, children beehave themselves worse and worse and in this situation teaching them home seems to be save and efficient.
We wish you a very pleasant cruise :)
A warm hello from Russia.

John,
Kevin and I home school our boys too; we have been for 3 years now. Before that they were in a small church school that is now not open, so they have never been to a public school, and that is just the way we want it. I am the one who makes sure the boys do their work each day, David is in 9th grade and Joey in 7th grade. We use a computer curriculum that is also used by small private schools, Switched On Schoolhouse. It teaches most of it and I have to only tutor and grade some of it, still always checking their work. Also each state has different laws and rules for Home Schooling and we are enrolled or “umbrellaed” under a school that keeps our records and grades and we are then put on their list as teachers, this also keeps the Public School system out of home, and our children do not need to take any standardize testing like FCAT. I am happy to say both of them are making A’s and B’s in all subjects, including Bible, Math, Language Arts, History & Geography, and Science as well as Consumer Math and Health for the 9th grade. It dose help that they both like learning even If they may not admit it.
We do keep busy with many others who Home School with different activities and church youth groups, this helps to because they still have a social group they keep up with.
We have learned that it is quieter to pick Sept – Nov for our vacations as there are fewer children on so our children can have the “run” of the ship more, and do get a little extra attention too. Oh and it also help that this is also the time of the year that has the lowest prices and with booking for 4 that is a big deal right now. Our boys have also made friends on the last few cruises of other home schoolers too and that is nice for them to compare with other that have the same background.

With this being such a large subject I will post it at my blog to if any have any questions I would be glad to answer if I can,

Best to you both

Hi John! Hi Heidi! Hi Stephanie! Hi Roberto (if you're back yet. My sympathy on the loss of your grandmother.)

Well, I survived the flight back to San Jose. (John, I want Carnival to buy an airline and run it like they do their cruises. Going from being treated like a valued guest on the ship to being treated like livestock on the plane is too much of a shock at the end of the cruise!)

You asked about home schooling. It is a choice many families have made in the US. Mrs. Reeman seems to be doing it the right way and for the right reasons, but I think she is in the minority of home-schoolers. An awful lot of families home school because they refuse to accept the theory of evolution by natural selection. As for the other scientific theories, I think they are undecided about whether disease is caused by germs or by tiny demons poking you with pitchforks, and whether airplanes are held aloft by the Venturi principle or by invisible geese glued to the wings. So, they yank the little darlings out of real school and take them home to teach them that the Earth is only 6000 years old and that if you rearrange the letters of the proper biblical passage you can find out who will win the Superbowl. Carnival should pay attention to this trend because it means that in a generation their paying customers will be from the Balkans and it will be the Americans who will be mopping the spilled drinks off the Lido deck.

BTW, it sounds like Mrs. Reeman's home town is Hoboken, which is where Frank Sinatra grew up.

Hi John/Heidi:
Nice to see the enthusiasm at WaterWorks. I look forward to this concept making it to other vessels.
Homeschooling is clearly gaining popularity here in the states. I wonder as well if i would have been a better student/person had my parents taught me.
Thank you for another great blog today and looking forward to reading more!
