Good Morning everyone. Here I am, back home on the Carnival Freedom and, as I sit here at 7:18 am at the computer in my underwear writing my morning section of the blog, it feels like I have never been away. As always, yesterday was a very long day as it always is when you walk back on board and take the reigns straight away. However after the previous day I was ready for anything.
We sailed away from Miami and goodness me how much that has changed with new apartment buildings and houses everywhere.
As we sailed away we passed the beautiful yachts in Miami Marina. These will be the same ones we will see in Europe later this year and I am certain I saw George Hamilton on his yacht………..looking tanned…………and I am sure that was Cindy Crawford by his side………….lucky sod. I have missed Miami and it was great to see it again.
There is always so much expectation when you return. Revenue partners want you to promote this and that and of course you need to change the entertainment program back to the way you like it. A Cruise Director will always change things even if it’s running perfectly, it is just the nature of the beast. This is when I realize how important Heidi is as it is her organizational skills and clear thinking that make sure everything is taken care of.
Last night at 10:30 pm I stood in the wings of the Victoriana Lounge waiting for the show to start. People ask me all the time if I get nervous and I guess the only time I feel a little angst is when you have been away for a long time. I know I had the Bloggers cruise but that aside I had not performed in three months and there is always a little bit of anxiety that has you thinking “Am I funny………..will my timing be ok………….will I remember what to say…………..is my fly open.” However, it’s like riding a bike and after a few minutes I found myself back in the swing of things and there I was doing what I enjoy most………….entertaining 1500 people.
Last night’s Welcome Aboard Show produced some great characters including the mayor of a tiny town in Nova Scotia called Canso which has 900 people, mostly fisherman living there. Also during the show we met Sal………..who………….half way through the evening had to leave the stage to pee………….I went with him………………taking the wireless microphone with me so everyone could hear……………..it was very funny although my microphone smells funny now…………………actually, I held the microphone in the sink and let the faucet run. …………..don’t tell anyone.
Also, I met Paige who is 8 years old. I had fun with her on stage and after every question I had her turn 360 degrees…….so I could say…….I turned another Paige……………groans all around.
Finally I met Richard who is 83 years old. He has been married for 59 years, he and his wife have 7 children, 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Richard spent 40 years as a miner in Utah and consequently is a little deaf…………..I had to shout for him to hear me and in the end I just told him every time I held the microphone in front of him to say the word “yes.” You can imagine the fun I had with that…………..do you love your wife “yes”……………are you feeling romantic tonight “yes”……….do you wish Jessica Simpson was waiting for you in your cabin…………”yes” ………it was a lot of fun.
Anyway, here are some photos of Paige and Richard.
Well, the weather looks good and the seas are calm . Ok, time for the morning show……………..back soon.
Actually, it’s now 9:30 pm and I just finished the first show and two Captain’s elegant cocktail parties. I took some random photos. They are in no particular order and are of the officers being presented on stage, the crew areas and staff mess. I will be adding these “random shots” here and there in future.
So, after a long wait let’s return to normal and start with a few letters from the In Their Own Words section.
I did call Pastor Johnson and apologized. He seemed unaware that the ship had a casino………..anyway, I apologized to him and we left as friends……..I also agreed to allow him to conduct a service later in the cruise and open it to all the guests.
Now, imagine a fanfare and loud trumpets as for the first time in a long time………………I will answer your comments and questions……………..I am happy………………my finger is not.
These are the answers to comments and questions from the blog called The Magic Stick
TAMMIE………….Thanks for the words of support and I hope you are enjoying the blog thingy. ……..cheers
CAROL SCHOENBERGER…………It seems ages that I have typed those words. I have read every one of your comments that you have slapped on during the past few weeks. Now, to the extra medium bathrobes. It seems it is easier to learn an Oriental language than to get our supplier to produce bigger robes. The battle though is not over I continue to fight for this just and true cause. Hope you are still enjoying the blog thingy and thank you so much for your continued support and friendship.
CATMAMA044……….Stick with it………very funny and Heidi laughed when she read that as well. We will indeed stick with it but hopefully not too much longer……I am exhausted.
RICHARDDETRICH…………Thanks for the Shredded Wheat advice. I wish I could have the ones with sugar on them but unfortunately that particular avenue of pleasure is also closed. You mentioned I may have been a naughty child………………yep, I think I probably was. Hope you continue to read the blog thingy and all the best mate.
JAMES………..I hope all the hard work pays off and we are as lucky as you. Have a wonderful cruise with the family on the Carnival Triumph and if you have any questions or concerns please let me know. Cheers.
VICKI………..You asked about Ken our Maitre’D……….he works in the Posh Dining Room with seating times of 5:45pm and 8:00pm. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. All the best.
BIG ED…………..And so our banter starts again. I am not sure if Heidi will go with the name Ed if we ever have a boy but maybe she can be persuaded. She has used the gripper things you gave us and they have become a tool of discipline………….thanks for that. On another note I want to publicly thank you and Mrs. Big Ed for all you did for us. You are both caring and loving people and you and your group have given Heidi and I ever lasting memories. …………….my favorite of which was when everyone was wearing surgical masks at the same time and a couple walked into the room………..seeing everyone wearing the masks they ran away quickly fearing a chemical attack……………after eating all the jelly beans you gave me, they may have been correct. Thanks again mate and see you soon.
MIKE L……………Hello Big Mike………..I could have done with you as security during the Bloggers cruise as so many people tried to rip off my clothes……………….they were mostly men though. Its been great to see that you have continued to read the blog and I appreciate that so very much mate. Keep reading.
SOUTHERN DREAMS………Hello to you both. I am glad you liked number 4 although number 2 is pretty cool as well. I think of you and Charlie all the time and we both as always send our best to you both………..when do you go to watch the leaves change colour?
CHERYL………………I did perform………..quite well actually………….let’s see if there is a reward. Glad you are enjoying the blog thingy. Cheers.
THAD RICE…………Thank you on behalf of all the Cruise Directors who you say are such an important part of so many people’s cruise experience. I look forward to meeting you personally in March. Cheers.
LONGIN2CRUISE…………Having dreamt about me wearing a blond wig driving an Alfa Romeo I can only presume that you need help…………………..I would never, ever………………….drive an Alfa Romeo……………..now, if I had been driving an Aston Martin or a Bentley then that would have been a dream that may come true…………I would happily wear a blond wig and fish net stockings for that experience. Keep dreaming and keep reading the blog thingy……………sweet dreams.
CINDY BRUCE………….Good advice, tomorrow’s breakfast will include your additions…………its better than All Bran………both me and the plumber agree! Great to hear from you and please keep reading.
KATHY KROLL……………Hello Kathy. I was talking about you with Kerry Stables who designs and produces our shows. I mentioned your proud times as a Vegas dancer………..she was very jealous. Thanks for the production notes and hopefully they will come true. Best to you both as always.
JIMNI………….but not too much, I am only human. ……………..Thanks mate.
GREG BALDASSARI……………..hello mate. I have seen that you like so many have continued to reply to every posting and even though time has not allowed me to do so I hope you know that I read each and every one of them. You mentioned Sail Away parties and indeed this was discussed. You are going to see major changes in all our deck parties and very soon I will be able to tell you some exciting news. Thanks again mate and all the best to you and your family.
EDWIN……………The boat was rocking………………….for nearly 5 minutes.
LINDA HERNACKI…………….I did indeed pass on all your wishes to Todd and wee Jimmy and one day I truly and sincerely hope that we get to have a hug in person. The photo system we have onboard will be having a major overhaul with lots of new additions and I think you and many others will be very happy. It is wonderful to be writing to you again and thank you for your continuing friendship to Heidi and I which means so very much.
INEZ…………….Thanks for the super words of support. There are new people at the top at Carnival and they have many new and exciting ideas. I will share these with you ASAP. Thanks again and I do hope you are still enjoying reading my thingy.
BERNARD ANDRADES……….Hello and thanks for the posting. I am glad you liked the photos and I hope you are enjoying the blog. You are correct, new ideas keep inspiring me to be innovative as well so hopefully what we will unveil to everyone will be something which will inspire people to continue to keep cruising with us. Thanks mate and all the best.
RUS AND NINA FRANKLIN……………hello my friends, how are you? It was great to see your names and read another wonderful posting. Wee Jimmy was doing great and it was hard to say goodbye to him…………I have no idea when I will see him again. Glad you liked number 7 and I have passed on your congratulations to Mr. Cahill. Thanks to you both for well……..you know……….everything you do. Heidi and I send you our warmest regards.
PEANUTS…………As always another great posting from you, Joan. I agree with you completely that our embarkation needs to improve. It is a guest’s first impression of the Carnival experience and if it is not a good one it stays with you. Therefore we spent a long time talking about this and I know and promise that you will see some major changes which will enhance the experience. It’s strange that on the same blog I have requests for a small bathrobe and an extra medium bathrobe………lets see what we can do. I was concerned to read that you found the Lido Deck bar staff not to be friendly. I have passed these comments on to the Hotel Director……………we pride ourselves on having the friendliest staff at sea and if someone does not reach our high standards then they need to go and work on the Rude of the Seas where they belong.
Great to hear from you and please keep reading and please keep writing.
GLORIA………………Ask and it shall be given. Number 6 will be ready and waiting for you in May here on the Carnival Freedom. If you have any questions about your Med cruise please let me know and thanks for the smiley face advice……….I need all the help I can get. Cheers.
CAROLYN AND DON……………….I am so sorry that I have damaged your internal organs with the content of the last blog. Hopefully this will not be permanent damage and, if needed, I am willing to donate a kidney or any part of my body you feel you need…………that didn’t sound right did it? Thanks for the kind words and I hope you continue to laugh and enjoy the blog.
NANETEALI……………hello Nanni. Well, by the time you read this I will be in beautiful San Juan. The following call, please, can you come and visit? I am so sorry that I have not written for so long but you and your beautiful family are in my thoughts always. When we arrived in San Juan a few weeks ago and you met us …………well…………that was a very special moment. Muchus Hugos para usted………….amigos always.
DWA 76………….It feels really good typing in familiar names and new ones as well. Of course yours is as familiar as my favorite pair of underwear which I have had for 11 years…………..I know reading this you must be feeling so privileged to be compared to my underwear. I am always glad to see postings from you and, like my underwear, I hope they will last forever. Cheers mate.
RUTH JAMISON………..hello Ruth, how wonderful to hear from you. Thanks as always for your loyal support of this great cruise line and hopefully the changes we make to embarkation will have you enjoying the experience even more. It’s always great to read your name and I hope you and the family are doing well. Heidi and I send our best.
BIG ED………….You should patent that idea mate. Big Ed Fashion………….I can see all the supermodels wearing it.
LISA AND ELAINE…………….I agree, number 3 was a great idea………..mine by the way. How are you both? I apologize that I have not written for so long but at least for the next five weeks I will be able to do so. Please keep reading my thingy and its great to be back. Cheers.
MARK TWAIN AND A HALF……………It feels like just yesterday that we were together on the Carnival Freedom………I truly enjoyed meeting you. I am glad you liked the photos of wee Jimmy and the gang and look out for more behind the scenes photos each and every blog. Hope you and the other half are well and thanks for your continued support of my thingy.
SUE K…………..What is monkey tea, you asked?………..Well, it is a English brand called P.G. Tips, so called because it was advertised by chimpanzees in the early 1980’s. It is the best tea in the world and if you are a tea drinker you must try it. Hope that answers your question. Cheers.
KUKI………..Hello mate. Al and I filmed some stuff as we discussed and it will be on its way to you. How are you? Please send my best to all your group that sailed with us and of course Mrs.Kuki as well. ……….hope you bought a new laptop. See you soon mate.
SUSAN V……………….I am very grateful to you for taking the time to post such brilliant thoughts and suggestions. Indeed, embarkation day should be made more fun and we are all committed to doing this. Your other comments regarding the spa and photos are well made and we discussed ways to improve these areas last week. I think you will be impressed with what’s coming. You requested more photos of the CD’s and indeed I will be presenting more of my colleagues in the spotlight soon. I hope you are well and enjoying the blog and many thanks again for slapping on such a wonderful posting.
DEBORAH ROSATO……………Thank you so much for the best wishes and hearing that the blog makes you laugh out loud makes me very happy indeed. Please keep reading as there is more laughter around the corner.
2009BLOGGERSCRUISEHEREWECOME…………….Great screen name by the way. Thanks for the offer of Viagra……….I actually take it already every night………..it stops me rolling out of bed when the ship is rocking…………..sort of like an anchor. My best to you both and thanks for sharing in the fun.
JAKE S…………….Good to hear from you mate and I see you enjoyed the photos of the Cruise Directors. Chris Roberts is from Georgia by the way……..not the U.K…………he speaks with a very Southern accent and is a great chap and a super CD. I will be posting more photos of the Cruise Directors soon. Until then, I hope you enjoy reading my thingy.
OK, going to stop there as I have to go and watch the show and I wanted to finish the blog first. I will start with more questions and comments with JAROBB’s being first tomorrow.
Let’s do an interview. We have been speaking about Icons recently and one already in place is of course Carnival’s world famous Piano Bars. These are some of the most popular entertainment areas onboard each ship and have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a Piano Bar entertainer?……………….Well wonder no more as we pass things over to Ron Passalacqua who is one of Carnival’s most popular Piano Bar musicians. I asked Ron to describe what it’s like to sit behind the piano and entertain our guests……………here is what he had to say.
When did you begin work with Carnival as a Piano Bar Entertainer?
My life with Carnival began on November 24, 2002 on the Carnival Victory. Not only was that my first experience working on a cruise ship, but also my first time working in music full time.
Had you always worked as an entertainer?
No! I’m relatively new at the piano man game. Music has always been a huge part of my life, but only as a serious interest or hobby. As a youngster, “little Ronnie” participated in choruses and bands, took piano lessons from the proverbial “little ol’ lady up the street,” and then, in high school and college, I studied voice and took part in a lot of musical theater productions. In college and, later, grad school, I made politics my focus, with a minor in music. I worked in the Washington, DC political field for a few years, the highlight of which was a staff position with the Clinton administration in the East Wing of The White House. (No, I never met Monica!) Despite the thrill of the political world (which included the Clinton’s cat Socks taking daily naps on my fax machine), my love for music, and a need to pay the rent, kept me busy moonlighting weekly as a piano man at neighborhood watering holes.
In 2000, I left Washington and the political scene to follow a job offer in “The Big Apple,” New York City. In addition to working full-time as a project manager at a health insurance company in lower Manhattan (Zzzzzzz…. boring!), I serenaded crowds a couple nights a week as a singer and pianist at a restaurant in Jersey City, NJ. Talk about a scene from the Sopranos! Fuhgetaboutit!
How did you get from project manager to piano man?
Without a doubt, the biggest catalyst in my life was 9/11. I was at the World Trade Center to personally witness the overwhelming horror, and it deeply and spiritually moved me (when you see people die in front of you, it changes you). As a result, I questioned everything in my life and decided to take a chance on realizing my dream to be an entertainer for a living. The next thing I knew, all my belongings were in storage and I was on a flight to Miami to board the Carnival Victory. Feel free to visit my website (www.ronpass.com) for a detailed account of my 9/11 experience and my personal story of my transition from corporate stooge to piano man. What do you enjoy most about being a Piano Bar Entertainer?
It’s a true blessing to be able to do what I love for a living. Without a doubt, the best part of my job is the interaction with our guests. How many people can say that it’s their job to help make people smile, laugh, and sing? Anyone who’s been in my piano bar knows I like to keep things up-tempo and interactive. The best nights are when the guests and I feed off of each others’ energy. Sometimes I’m just as entertained by them as they are by me. There is no better compliment than when guests tell me the favorite part of their cruise was the piano bar, or when I learn that returning guests chose a particular ship, or chose Carnival again, because I’m there. Still, it’s not always peaches and cream. Wherever there is alcohol served, there’s bound to be challenges (and material for jokes on future cruises!).
Share a favorite story with us that involves our guests and your job.
There are so many stories… some of which can’t be shared in a public forum! (Giggle.) Some are heart-warming, some jaw-dropping, some frustrating. On the lighter side, I once had a very drunk man in the piano bar mistake one of the bar stools for a urinal. He undid his pants and freed Willy, but luckily other guests were able to stop him before he broke the seal. Maybe he just didn’t like the song I was singing…
What are your top 10 song requests?
Ok… let’s do this David Letterman style! In reverse order:
10. Sweet Home Alabama9. Crocodile Rock8. New York, New York
7. Don’t Stop Believin’
6. Margaritaville
5. American Pie
4. Friends In Low Places
3. Brown Eyed Girl
2. Sweet Caroline
And the #1 song request…(drum roll, please!)….. 1. Piano Man (surprise, surprise!)I used to love that song. Please, if any of you has a heart, never request that song from a piano player.Do you have a favorite tune?I’m often asked if I have a favorite song. My interest in music is so varied, it’s impossible for me to select only one. But I do enjoy performing some more than others. Often it’s a song that I just learned, so it’s fresh and interesting to me. Or it may be a tune that was a challenge to learn, so I’m particularly proud to show it off. Still, Elton John’s “Your Song” is special to me, as it’s the very first song I sang on my first night playing in the piano bar on my first ship. Because of that, it’s the very last song I play on the final night before I leave a ship to head home for vacation. Call me sentimental!
What are your plans for the near future?
Right now I’m spending time beefing up my song repertoire and planning a second CD recording. Ever since I recorded my first CD in the studio, I’ve wanted to record one live in the piano bar. It’s in the planning stages now, and I hope to get it out over the next year. After I leave the Carnival Freedom in April, I’ll be taking a vacation before returning to another Carnival ship sometime in June. I hope to be the piano man on the second John’s Blog Cruise in 2009… that is if you’ll have me, John! I want to put you on top of the piano in a feather boa…
What a great interview and how about that photo with Hilary Clinton……………….Ron is a wonderful entertainer and I am sure you will see him on our new ship Carnival Splendor. Thanks mate and many thanks for all the brilliant fun you provide our guests. It feels strange writing a normal blog again. I have to ask…………….do you prefer this format or do you prefer the way I have been doing it with shorter but more frequent blogs…………….please let me know your thoughts. Its great to be back and the comments after the Welcome Aboard show have been wonderful to listen to…………but of course you can’t please all the people all the time as you will now discover.

Cabin: &^%$Added-Changed: 02/09/08 – 02/09/08
Upset with Cruise Director JohnMr &^%$# came to the Purser to state that he was very upset at the Cruise Director John. Purser asked what the problem was. Mr %$#@! said that during the show Cruise Director had said that if anyone had a special Valentines wish for their wife or husband they could leave a note at the Purser desk. Mr &^%$#@ stated that he was a gay man and John had not acknowledged gay people who had partners. Purser apologized and told the guest she would pass the comments on to the Cruise Director. Mr. #@$%^ also said that other passengers were staring at him and his partner when they were kissing on Lido Deck and said that he thought Carnival was a gay friendly cruise line. Guest wants to speak to Cruise Director. Tasked to Cruise Director.
He is right……………I should have said partner…………not husband and wife………….I am just old fashioned I guess. Carnival certainly shows no prejudice towards anyone although I cannot control the thoughts of others. Anyway, I met with the guest today and we had a nice chat and sorted everything out and I will be reading a special letter he has written for his partner at tomorrow’s Morning Show………………….you learn by your mistakes and I guess I made a big one here. Heidi is still getting the cabin as she wants it, and soon she will have it feeling like home again………………what would I do without her……………………………hopefully she will be nice to me tonight and we can stay out of bed and get some rest.
Goodnight
Your friends
John and Heidi

John and Heidi, Welcome home!!!!!
Loved the pictures of the “crew area” and great to hear you sounding so “back in the swing” of things.
You have to stay in the stick of thingys too until said mission is accomplished…allegedly :>) ROFL!
I am new to this blog thingy and LOVE LOVE LOVE it, not only hearing about my favorite place to be in the world, but what better way to pass through this great world than with a laugh!
And PLEASE, tell us that we will have RON with us on bloggers 2009!!! It just gets better and better, how will we ever stand the wait??!!?? By planning a cruise before then of course, which I did!!!

Eva
WOOOOHOOOO!!
I am in blog heaven! It’s back, in all it’s glory!!
John, it is SO good to see the blog back to its normal form. I’m sure your throbbing digit isn’t so thrilled but such is the price of fame and fortune, my friend!
So, when do we get to see ‘The Best of John Heald’s Blog’ ??? I’d love to relive so many of the earlier blogs without having to slog through so many pages of web thingies…
Good news about the Sail Away parties! Can you get them ginned up before I sail on the Inspiration in April??? Please???
Now that we can get responses again, please bring us up to date on the progress of your mate, our friend, Alan. I hope he’s doing much better.
Also, will On Deck for the Cure continue? It’s a wonderful program and needs to be expanded, in my most humble opinion.
All the best from a VERY happy blogger!!
Greg

John,
Welcome back …. I read the letter from the disgruntled passenger on this post and realized I miss shooting trap off the bow !!
Be cool….
John, boy have we missed the old style blog. How we can get back to getting that ship pointed it the right direction. First thing we have to do is alert the medical staff that guest will again be coming down with “JHLD” the John Heald Laughing Disease.
Your interview with Ron the piano man will make Laura ( Divetrash) happy. She kept Ron on his toes most of the Bloggers Cruise. The rest of the time you can get that from Ron. I’m sending you a few pictures of Ron and Laura from the Bloggers Cruise by Email.
BIG ED
ATTENTION if you want to see some of the photos from the 2008 Bloggers Cruise and John’s Birthday Party just click on my name above and go to my blog.
Hi John and Heidi
So glad to see you back in your regular form. I am sorry for all the trouble in getting back to the Freedom, but we are sure glad to have you back. I hope to sail with you guys again soon.
Take care and my best to both of you
Sue
John,
So glad to hear you’re at last back “home” on Freedom. I can’t wait to see what you and Al did for us:)
With the assistance of the imaginative members of CruiseMates, we’ve come up with a TOP TEN list of reasons to book the Blogger toot ( I mean TWO) cruise – (feel free top steel some if you like)
10 . Your tax rebate check will be put to use the way Congress meant it to be, “to secure your cabin on Blog2NOLA (the name we’ve bestowed in this cruise)
9. You get a French Quarter instead of two dimes and a nickel
8. FEMA will give a slightly used ‘Blue Roof Tarp” and “Trailer” to each Cruise Mate
7. To learn when to holler Aaaahhh-Eeeeeee
6. You’ll learn the difference between a Carnival Krewe and a Carnival Crew
5. you’ll see that a “Cajun” uses everything on a pig but its squeal
4. You’ll find out what the difference is between a beignet and a bidet
3. So you can visit their NEW politicians BEFORE they go to jail!
2. If you don’t book BLog2NOLA, we will have to donate all the extra teeshirts to the Army Corp of Engineers to plug up the levee
And THE # 1 REASON to book the CruiseMates & John Heald Blog2NOLA Cruise is:
So you won’t have to sit at home and read Kuki’s and John’s blogs and wish you were there!
And the list has worked…. in the two weeks since the Bloggers cruise, CruiseMates members have already booked 87 cabins for Bloggers 2 on the Fantasy… and the list numbers grow daily.
Now I’m just sitting around in the cold waiting to board the Freedom yet again for the Transatlantic in Apr. CAN’T WAIT!
Regards,
Kuki

How nice to have you back in rare form as always! I, and I’m sure many others, have missed your usual format of answering questions and telling us about ship happenings. You bring light and laughter to so many of us every day! It is such a pleasure to turn on the computer and see another blog from you! Thank you again for continuing to blog while you were on vacation! You go above and beyond what Carnival expects of you in so many ways, but just know how much it is appreciated by all of your faithful bloggers!!! You are one of a kind! When I read your blogs I am always laughing out loud and then everyone around wants to know what is so funny. I find myself reading your blogs outloud! Well, Welcome Home–great to have you back!!!
Sheryl
Hi John and Heidi,
)
(Hi too, to Roberto and Stephanie
First off, even though I’m a couple of days late, I am so sorry your flight back to MIA was so awful. I don’t think you exaggerated one bit. Even though my pre- and post-cruise flights were not nearly as awful as what you endured, they still sucked. I think it’s especially unfair that you were treated so poorly because the two of you work so hard to make sure your customers are treated so well. It’s like you’re getting the shaft from both ends.
Oh well, on to nicer things. Thanks so much for the interview with Ron, AKA Ron Pass, AKA Ron Pass-the-liquor. He was definitely one of the highlights of my cruise, and to find out that he might be on the ‘09 BC really makes my day! In fact, I emailed him just the other day to try to find out if he can be there, so please, John, any string you can pull to get this done, pull it!
I really like the pix of the crew areas. Since I can’t go down there, I find them especially interesting. (In tiny street urchin voice) Please, sir, may I have some more? And if possible, could you say who is in the picture?
As for “turn the Paige” – that is called a Pun. And a pun spelled backwards is a Nup. And a Nup is a Nup!
Hello dear friend
!!
I want a picture with you and I need a big huggo before you go back to Europe !!So dont forget me.You tell me what I have to do OK? That day that we saw you last time was very special for us too but it left us wanting to spend more time with you and have a long conversation.John even if that day comes and you dont have time or you are busy, I will understand( in part is our fault) please see me at least for 5 minutes . I cant believe you are so close. So close and so far…agh!
Yes exactly, Im reading this and the ship is coming into port. Later Im going to take a stroll Old San Juan with my husband. He always goes after work when there are many ships, it is his escape more if our favorite ship is in port.YES!! I can come visit next time you are in port. The 25??
If your plans dont change I guess. Im afraid of you going back to Europe and not seeing you again.Im not going to the bloogers cruise so that worsens my fears
Amigos siempre, muchos huggos for you and Heidi
See you soon( I hope)
Nanni
Good afternoon John and Heidi,
So good to see the “old” Blog style back and welcome back aboard the Carnival Freedom. I think you misunderstood the comment regarding the Lido deck bartenders. They were by NO means rude or not doing their jobs properly. They were doing a great job..it was the absence of a smile or friendly talk that I was mentioning. John don’t take this wrong but some countries and/or regional groups are more reserved than others and I think this is the case. You know how some regions and/or countries have a stereotype such as the British with their “stiff upper lip” and people from India have a “lilt” in their voice and Americans are pushy and loud this is probably the case. They also may have been new and just focused on doing a good job. I wish I could have offered more in the area of embarkation but I really don’t know what the crew could do. I do know that I am thrilled to be on board again and can’t wait for sail away and I’m sure most guests feel the same way!
Hope you and Heidi are successful in your “endeavors” and you will have wonderful news in the near future. The best thing to do is just relax and enjoy yourselves ;O
You take care,
Joan
PS Pistons are on a 8 game winning streak!!
Hello, John and Heidi!
Welcome home. You must be so relieved to finally have your normal lifestyle going again. Well, except for Mr. Smileyface Stickman. Interesting, isn’t it, how a man’s perspective changes when something is “overly available.”? You certainly must be up to the challenge, John.
I have a couple of questions about you and the Carnival Splendor. Will you be the CD on the October 2008 TA to Ft. Lauderdale? What about the cruises immediately before and after the TA? Can you let me know soon? Thanks!
I, too, would like information about Alan. Hope he’s progressing famously.
So glad you’re back to the regular format,
Myra
Hi John/Heidi:
Gee…Thanks…
Haven’t spoken in weeks and the first comparison back is to your 11 year old underwear! Ha! I missed you too.
Glad you made it safely back aboard. Nice to see things flowing smoothly once again.
Great to hear from you and looking forward to keeping in touch.
Thanks!
David
John,
Princess Susan wants to do a btb with the blogger’s cruise next year. Mr. Cheap says the only way we would do a btb is if you were going to be the CD for the second cruise….so, will you, please?? I’ve never done a btb…I’ll even let you keep my scrapbook..lol.
john and heidi welcome home, good luck with your short stay back on the freedom, i couldnt believe your travel day and I though I have some bad days at work etc. Great interview and picture, we go back a few years with Ron as the piano bar player he is great he does work hard and the people loves his ways and music, thanks

Welcome home John & Heidi:
I am, too, very happy that you are back to the old blog. I enjoyed the interview with Ron – he is a hoot! Cannot wait to see you on his piano in a boa…:o)))))
Welcome back John and Heidi!
Nice to be back to the old format. Thanks for the interview with Ron…he’s great! SOCIAL!
How is Alan doing? Haven’t heard much about him recently.
elaine
Hi John!
) I’m booked on the Freedom for the July 21st cruise from Rome and was wondering since you will be on the Carnival Splendor, who will be the CD? Also, will the “Las Vegas Style” shows on this cruise be the raved about shows that were on the Freedom last year?
First time leaving you a comment after reading the blog for ages!
Great to see you back on the Freedom! I cruised with you way back in August ‘05 in the Liberty’s inaugral season in Europe and it was the best cruise I have ever been on (even better than RCCL!
Thanks for the help!
From a fellow Brit,
Steve
First, Thanks whole heartedly for the replies. I thought they are just being scrolled up and forgotten. Thanks you Mr. John once again.
The interview part was good. Bar Piano. Can we have some serious faces interview like the IT Manager or may be Admin Manager in latter dates?
Hi John and Heidi,
Well we are in Daytona beach, for speed week……. for the NASCAR RACES. This will be the last time we make this trip. Don has been coming down here for at least 25 years. But next year guess where will be ????!!!! Aboard the Fantasy on the 2009 bloggers cruise. Don made our reservations yesterday.
I only hope the kidney stones don’t make their appearance again this time next year. Those things hurt worse than #@%$^&%$# When Heidi is in labor don’t be surprised if she wishes kidney stones on you. It is the closest thing to labor pains a man can have…… giggle
Don is getting the DVD player set up so we can play our DVD’s of the 2008 bloggers cruise. We will share them with our Carnival cruising friends when they come for a cookout this afternoon. Wish you could be here to join us, but we will think of you and Heidi.
Carolyn and Don
Hey John,
Welcome back! Definitely missed the normal blogs, and it is great to be back. It seems that you are loving it as well.
I’ve been reading all of the blogs, and I have a few questions/comments. First, it really sounds like you and the other cruise directors are putting a lot of work into making Carnival better than it already is (especially by listening to guests and us bloggers), and I know that it will ultimately result in Carnival continuing to lead the market. Any idea when you will be able to begin telling us about the new ideas / improvements. I might be sailing the Imagination in March or April… any idea if the new photo ideas or sailaway/embarkation ideas will be in place by then? Also… I am not sure if you are able to discuss either of these things… but does Carnival have any plans on increasing calls to Half Moon Cay or maybe a different private island – I keep hearing great reviews about that stop/island. Also, does Carnival plan on keeping the reggae bands by the pool like it always has been (which I love)… have heard some other plans about other lines making cutbacks and just hoping Carnival will not follow in the wrong direction of these other lines?
One last question… I had asked you this several months ago, and you had said that he had just gotten off of the Victory… but do you know what ship out old waiter Roberto Dejesus is now on? If we go on the Imagination, we would love to meetup with him. His email address doesn’t work anymore, but we would still love to reunite with him after many years. He was such a great waiter / one of the best crewmembers.
Also.. I don’t comment every day, but like many people I think, I am hear reading the blog every single day. It really is great, and I thank you for taking you time to provide us with this. Have fun, and I can’t wait till the next blog!
-Matt
Ron was the piano bar cruise on the Carnival Freedom-he was awesome!
I am looking forward to seeing hom on the Splendor in August
John,
Stick with this “old style” format, unless it is too much work on your end. You should have Ron go to the cigar bar one or two nights for those of us that like to enjoy our daily helping of cigaros Cubanos before coming back to the states. In response to your comment, just get a cattle prod or taser, you can do that as CD, right?
_BigMike
Hi John and Heidi !
Thanks for thinking of me. Tell Kerry to go to my web site, she may know a few people there. Also check out Page 2 on my site. I have “then and now” photos of dancers who have “found” me again after 30 yrs (yikes!) in some cases.
http://www.kathykroll.com or click on my name above.
Glad you’re “back home” in one piece !!
Kathy and Paul
John & Heidi, welcome home….and as I’m ‘old fashioned’ myself, your Old Style thingy is just what I’ve been waiting for, thank you.
Cheers, Ray
It is so wonderful to see you and Heidi back on the Freedom. We cruised on it in November and had a wonderful time, especially the big screen on the Lido deck. We’re going on the Triumph in August but we really wish it also had a big screen, it made an amazing difference. John would you PLEASE talk to the powers that be and ask them consider putting screens on all the ships – it really makes the vacation. It was fun watching my husband take his walks on the Lido deck while I was sitting in bed eating breakfast. All the best to you and Heidi and good luck in your exciting “wee one” endeavors.
Hi John –
I wanted reach out to you. Our clients just finished renting the Victory and another boat out for several weeks and I had a few marketing questions. Is there a good way to reach you directly?
Thanks,
Ted
Welcome back John & Heidi!!
I love to start my mornings reading your blog & sipping a hot cup of coffee. I’m addicted to both!
Welcome home John & Heidi: We missed you, it is so nice to have you write to us again. Unfortunately we can’t make the New Orleans bloggers cruise next year (I won’t fly), any chance of another bloggers cruise in 2009 as well, leaving from Florida? Hope so! Anxious to hear about the pictures and what is new with that onboard, hopefully picture packages to include 8×10’s, 5×7’s and wallets. That would be great! Well, happy baby making days ahead! Good Luck! Linda & Mike
Welcome home,
I like the old format. Whatever format you can make happen will be welcome. If some people don’t want to read your answers put in the click thingy that was on before which they could click on and it would skip the answers and continue on with the blog.
The pictures are very nice. It’s neat to see areas not usually shown, also the shots from around the public areas.
Keep up the GREAT work making fun and having fun.
Hi John and Heidi,
It’s good to hear you’re back on the Freedom, but is it true you may not be there during our cruise on April 12th? Bummer!! We were so hoping to meet you. You really make us laugh and we can just imagine meeting you in real life. I sure hope that you two really will be there, but we understand if you have to be on another new ship, the Splendor, right? You’re pretty important, you know!!
The count down is to 60 days. Yippee !!! The snow is melting, sort of, but the tropics are calling our names.
John,
Welcome home. It’s great to see your Blog in all it’s glory again and it makes my heart smile to know that you and Heidi are setteling in.
Great news about the sail away parties. I (and I know many others) have sorely missed them.
Well, it is a little less than a year until Michael and I will be sailing with you on the Fantsy (Bloggers Cruise 2009) and we can hardly wait. Thank God we have two cruises between now and then to keep us occupied.
Thanks for all you do and our best to Heidi.
John
So glad you are back at sea and telling us the details life on board. Any lenght of blog is fun…just keep’em coming.
I do have a question: when we sailed on the Miracle in Jan. they announced the captain was taking a vacation after our cruise. Do they have Captains that act as “fill ins” and cover for vacationing Captains or do one of the officers step up and fill the shoes? Just curious how this works.
John and Heidi welcome home.
John really enjoyed your blog about your trip to the Freedom,(ouch).
Great interview with Ron Passwe are looking forwrd to seeing him.
You must write a book about all your adventures it would be a best seller.
See you on the 23rd.
Papanh
Dear John,
Apparently my earlier two word comment was disappointing to Big Ed, so in deference to him I will comment further, like you’re not already sick of hearing from me on the subject of piano bars. LOL!
Thank you so much for posting that funny and interesting interview with Ron Pass. He is a truly gifted entertainer, a great personality and a big part of the reason I enjoyed the Blogger’s cruise so much (after meeting you of course!) I’m a little worried about what pictures Big Ed may have sent you… Although I’m fairly certain that I behaved in a reserved and ladylike manner at all times (well at least the times I remember clearly).
And as you well know, nothing makes me happier than seeing these back lounge performers get a little recognition. And I kind of hope that it was something you talked about at the CD meeting, plugging them in announcements, etc. Here’s an idea, how about a feature on the musicians on the ship and where to find them that could be run on the Funship TV? You do it for the casino, why not?
Count me among the happy to see the old style blog. The behind the scenes stories of dealing with day to day life on the ship is what sucked me into your blog in the first place. And I too would like to know how your mate Alan is doing.
Welcome home. My best to Heidi and Roberto.
Veel knuffelen,
Laura
PS – I’m close to making a decision about Bloggers V.2.0. You know what will seal the deal of course? Ron in the piano bar! LOL!
John are you and Heidi going to be on the 50 day cruise, please say its so, we keep missing you, we were on the glory then went back alas you were gone 2 weeks on the freedom, you on Holiday. Hope to spend 50 Splendid days on the Splendor with you guys! Have talked two other couples into going too! Can’t wait Love and Lollipops Judy and Jim
Good evening Mr. Heald. I’m so glad you’re back on the Freedom but un fortunately I’m back home in Amherstburg after the cruise without having once again meeting you. It seems that you and I just can’t find the right time and place to meet. I’m glad you are happy back to where you rightly belong. Maybe somewhere in the future we’ll sit down and have that cup of tea. I hope that Heidi is doing well and how is Alan doing? Ciao my friend.
Paul F. Pietrangelo
John, you no write me back????
Sheriff not happy!! Only 90 something more days until the Glory!!
Welcome back John
Your interview with Ron was Excellent!
Jeanne and I think he’s Great.
Regards
Ray
John -
Just to let you know, the Mrs Missingthesmokefreeparadise and I, the now 2009bloggerscruiseherewecome are now officially booked as (drum roll, please) part of the Cruisemates group. I could not pass up the deal that Kuki was able to get us on the cruise – booked a 6D guarantee, but I know that you will work your magic and I will again find myself in a Cat 12 on a Fantasy Class ship (got the upgrade twice on the (now defunct) Smokefree Paradise).
Curious – did Heidi not notice your blogs about smilie faces? When she does become “with child”, and I know she will, I think we should hold a naming contest. John Edward “Big Ed” Heald just won’t do for a child of such a beautiful woman. We must come up with something more suitable – maybe Benjamin Bradbury Heald (aka my baby bb – I stole the idea from my brother).
Anyway, glad to see you are back to work, finally, and we look forward to seeing you sometime. I am not certain that the Carnival Splendor cruise is going to happen (we still have 45 days or so to decide), but the 2009 Bloggers is a go (at least now).
Peace, love and enjoy the smiles on the stick and your wife’s face.
Jon and Kathy
John & Heidi:
I know the two of you are glad to finally be back home. Heidi will have things all organized in no time!
I am sure all of your guest are thrilled to have you as their CD! I hope one day to also have that pleasure!
I loved the interview with Ron. I about died laughing at his story of a guest! I have seen some like that on our adventures with Carnival and all you can do is laugh!
Thank you for the pictures of the crew area. It’s nice to see that they have a very nice place to escape from all of the guest too. They work very hard and deserve their own space too!
When will you be posting the CD’s schedule for 2008? I am hoping that Chris Jefferson will still be on the Valor for our cruise 9/7. I met him when he was a social host with Corey Schmidt and kept in touch for a few year, but unfortunately, moved and lost his email. I am hoping to reconnect with him and meet his wife too!
Have fun and hope your finger heals very quickly!
Susan V.
John and Heidi,
Welcome back!
It really is great to be back in the “original” blog format! We’re just catching up on this end. So sorry to hear of your travel nightmare. With all of the new “nickle and dime” charges that we are constantly hit with (no end in sight), I agree that the airlines could steal a page or two from the Carnival customer service manual. John, perhaps a new “cocktail” is in order to keep up with the demands of your very determined wife. I’m thinking a combo drug we can call “VIALIS” is in order. This way, you’re ready to go at a moments notice, or any other day of the week for that matter! (wear BAGGY pants) Seriously, we wish you both the very best. You are very sweet and genuine people (like all SERIOUS cruisers!) Looking forward to getting back in the swing of things with Big Ed’s EVIL CREW! How is Alan, mate?
Lance & Ilda
Welcome back, John!
We sure have missed the old fashioned blog thingy! Sounds like you are back to your old self after your day from hell!
Great interview with Ron! He’s a wonderful entertainer.
Hello to Heidi!
Barb
John, I just returned from working bingo at my Knights of Columbus. While there I had a chat with a friend that was on the Grand Princess the same week as the Bloggers Cruise. Well the news was not good. This was their first cruise with Princess they usually are on a ship looking at the empty rock wall. He being my size but taller I know he’s never been on that wall. Well he started going throught a list of reasons why it would be his last time with Princess.
After I got through telling him all about my BTB starting with the BC and showing him my photos of all my fun I think he will be coming to me to get suggestions for his next cruise.
BIG ED
362 days to try to get him on the 2009 Bloggers Cruise.
GREAT blog. We missed you, John and hello to you too, Heidi.
Yes, we like the old long thingy LOL We have just returned from a walk and dinner in Old San Juan.We saw the ship and the long line of people waiting to get inside, your fault John. JA! No really we thought of you when we went to Mojitos to have dinner. The food was excellent! We would have love for both of you to join us.We thought of the great time we would be having, me teaching you some bad words in spanish for the next time you meet with a special guest or door.Although there were many people from the ship and we think that is no good due to your celebrity status.
What do you think??
Eugenio (Nanno)
Johnny’s got his grove back!!!!! Good to see the old format back on the blog thingy. Also hope that you and Heidi are now pseudo settled into your home away from home on the Freedom. (after lugging those anchors errr cases around town)….
Thanks for the interview with Ron. I saw a few clips of him on You Tube….very cool entertainer….
Less than 30 days ….Sensation….
John, so glad to have you back where you belong.
Only 177 days til we are on the Splendor, can’t wait!
Flat Joey says hi.
Jennifer and Danny
Welcome home John & Heidi,
I like the blog the way it was set up before and now…..don’t change it please……
I hope to go on the bloggers cruise 2009….keep your fingers crossed.
We need an update on Alan too please.
-Cindy
ok spelling bad…I meant b2b…not btb……sorry
laura way to go thats more like it
john if ron wants to be the piano man for bloggers 2 we want him…….he is the best…
John,
My better half and I will be on Freedom March 8th and look forward to meeting you (you will be the CD on our cruise right). Do you have a particular excursion that is your favorite in San Juan, St. Maarten, or St. Thomas.
Welcome Home John and Heidi!!!
All is right with the universe once again!!!
Ron’s piano bar was standing room only during the Freedom TA this fall (we missed you). Every day more and more people would come there. Only the casino was more popular — most of the other night spots were fairly quiet.
Enjoyed the pictures of the crew mess. A recent best selling thriller set on an ocean liner (inspired by the newest Queen, I think) portrayed the crew quarters as horrible. Glad to see that was fiction!
Enjoy the warmth of the Caribbean! I’m sure the Freedom is giving you a warm welcome, too.
John,
I must tell you that my face must have lit up like a Christmas tree when I saw the response from you to my comment about embarkation. It is so good to know that the two of you are back on the Freedom and that life again is good.
It sounds like a madhouse in Miami. I am glad we did not have to go through that. Sorry it was so awful for the two of you.
Let me share with you about life on “this side of the pond”. We had a wind storm on Sunday. While we were at church, our power went out. It is now 48 hours later and it has not yet returned. Everyone in our neighborhood is completely without power. How I wish it were July and we were on the Splendor! We have gotten to the point where we get a warm dinner and linger as long as we can at the restaurant. Then we go home and dash straight to the bedrooms to get warm under blankets. The next morning, we make a mad dash to the cars and turn on the heat. This has got to end soon! One reason we are staying at the house is that we have animals- 2 dogs, 1 cat, and two innocent little hamsters who may soon go into a self-induced hibernation.
They are predicting we may have power by Friday.
Not a very pretty picture! Seriously, I can hardly wait to get on the Splendor!
The pictures were great! Thanks for keeping us focused on happier times that are yet to come!
Ruth
John,
I just wanted to let you know I enjoy your blog and read it everyday. I am sure a million people tell you this all the time but I enjoy your blog for a different reason then I think most people. My sister is a dancer on your ship. It’s fun to read little tid bits about the cruise and know that she was experiencing whatever you are talking about. I love having a somewhat window into what is going on where she is. She has been working for Carnival for many years and I know that it all melds together for her and when we finally talk on the phone [sometimes weeks in between talks] that she won’t remember ALL the things that go on. With your blog I know things and can now spy on her.[ just kidding] Anyways thanks and I will keep reading. So if you see her, tell Gabby I said hi!
Welcome back to John and Heidi!!
So sorry to hear of your travel nightmares, I guess we’ve all had them in some way or other.
I’ve missed the old fashioned blog thingy! But it sounds like you are back to your old self with your wonderful sense of humour (spelled in-correctly)..
Great interview with Ron! He’s a wonderful entertainer. Wished I could have enjoyed him more but unfortunately my eyes don’t do to well in a smokey room. Not that I’m complaining or anything, I was a smoker for 32 years, so I definitely understand the smoking thing..Even so, it was still nice to hear him play and sing, and sing and sing!! I hope I get to see him on the Splendor!
Say hi to Heidi and can’t wait for your next blog thingy!
Take Care,
Inez
Hi John,
I so enjoy reading about all the fun you have! My husband & I will be on the Freedom Feb. 23, with 6 other family members. We are re-doing our honeymoon as we were kicked off the last time (kidding). David had chest pains as we pulled into St. Martin & 4 days later back home he had a triple bypass. This was 19 months ago and he is doing wonderful! We just found out my Dad has cancer, he had an operation last week and it’s great news! He is also doing wonderful and all of us have lots to celebrate!! Do you have any suggestions for something special I can do for my 2 favorite men? Aside from having something delivered to the room (I already did that). We plan on dining at the supper club one night. Thanks and I am so excited to see you on the Freedom!! You have me laughing out loud & my husband thinking I’m crazy laughing at a computer screen!
Jill
ps. I’ll be the loud red head in the crowd!
John and Heidi,
The “old style blog” certainly brought a smile to my face on a day when I needed to smile. We had lost power on Sunday while we away from home. When we returned, the house was dark and cold.
That situation lasted for 50 hours. It is very challenging to have two young children in a house without any power. We got into the routine of eating a warm dinner out and lingering as long as we could over the meal. Then we would go home and head straight to bed. The blankets felt really good in the cold house. The next morning, I would get up and get the cars warm, give everyone a muffin and we would head out to the warmth of our jobs and school. Luckily, when we got home last night, the power was again on. It was heavenly. You take things like that for granted until it is not there.
We are really looking forward to the Splendor. I am anxious to start hearing about some of the shore excursions that will be offered.
I was glad to hear that Alan is doing better.
Any chance he might be on the inagural voyage of the Splendor? It would be great to meet him.
Well, that’s it for now! Thanks for the lovely pictures. Puerto Rico is really gorgeous at night.
Ruth
John, It sure would be nice to have Ron on the 2009 Bloggers Cruise. Then we would have three Elton Johns on the ship. Our Evil Crew’s John from Arkansas did a great job doing Elton John in the Legend show on the forst BC.
BIG ED
Hey , John .
I didnt know he was American.
Thanks for telling me.
The crew queters dinning looks better than what I wthought it did.
Good to see that my future fellow crew members are treated well!
Umm… I’m “Elton Ron”! LOL! I’d love to be part of the 2nd Bloggers’ Cruise!
