I missed it…………..I am so annoyed……………while it was happening I was asleep, dreaming of Miami Airport Immigration welcoming cruise ship crew with big smiles, free lemonade and chocolate chip cookies. While I was enjoying a dream that will never come true, the Carnival Triumph and the Carnival Freedom were escorting the Queen Mary 2 into the port of St. Thomas. The Captain said it was a wonderful sight and as the sun rose at 6:36am the three ships were in convoy. The Queen Mary 2 then turned to port and docked at the pier that used to be called “the Submarine Base” while the two Carnival ships headed to the Havensight docks. Years ago Carnival Corporation arranged a helicopter shot of the Sensation, along with a Holland America ship and I think a Windstar vessel as well. I am sure that if someone took the time to look at our schedules there would be a chance that a Carnival, Costa, Princess, Cunard, P&O, Seaborn and Aida vessel may be together…………..even if we don’t have all the sisters then, I know we could find a time when some of us are together in the Caribbean or Europe. We could sail in arrow formation………..what a photo that would be…………………..I wonder if this could be done?
So, here we are in St.Thomas. I am trying to remember the last time I was here and I think it has been 3 years or so. The first change I see from my office window id that the old ramshackle Ramada Hotel which was destroyed by a hurricane many years ago has finally be leveled and replaced with a new marina, shops and apartments………..it looks great. Next to us are two huge yachts, The Rising Sun and Queen M and while I sit here and write, the famous and tanned are still in bed while their dedicated crew prepare their breakfast of Pain O Chocolate, Eggs Benedict and Twigletts.
It’s 8:35am and our guests are already going ashore. Most are heading on a ship’s tour or going to the island’s most famous beach, Magen’s Bay. As I look at the people getting off I see the women armed with fully-loaded credit cards ready to buy anything and everything………….they look happy, they look content………….some are singing “Oh what a beautiful morning.”
Behind the exuberant ladies are the men…………their walk resembles someone who has just been told that they have to swim with Piranha fish who haven’t eaten in a week ………………they look scared and worried and they need to be………..the ladies are going shopping.
The crew love St.Thomas mostly because it is probably the most crew-friendly port in the Caribbean. What do I mean by this?
Well, there are crew centers here in abundance. These places provide the basic needs for crew. Cheap communication through e-mail and telephone, internet service and cheap food and drink representing the many nations that make up a ship’s company. Crew Centers are also places to meet friends and colleagues from other ships within the fleet. For example, today, many of the Carnival Freedom crew will be meeting with the Carnival Triumph crew whom they have become friends with over the years. Time of the crew members is limited and these centers make that time much more enjoyable. Europe is unfortunately well behind in realizing the needs of the crew with only Dubrovnik, Croatia really providing a service……………I hope as more and more companies place ships over there that Europe catches up with the Caribbean.
I was just going to slap this comment on from a guest when I realized that since I have returned from vacation we have had many new readers of my thingy. Therefore, I wanted to say that when I do place a negative comment on the blog, I do so because from the start I never wanted this to be an”everything is great all the time and I am the best and Carnival never has guests that complain and we are perfect and better than everyone else even though we are better than everyone else type of blog.”………phew……anyway, for all the newcomers out there I just wanted to point out this fact……….we are not perfect and sometimes rightly or wrongly people will complain and if I feel it is relevant I will share with you all the comments they have made while not revealing their names. The only time I reveal a name is when the guests write to me personally. Anyway, here is a comment from the daily log from the first sea day.

- Complaint about deck chair reserving
Mr ^&%$#$% came to the Purser and stated that this morning at 10:45am he and his wife had gone to Lido Deck and found many of the deck chairs reserved. He felt this to be unfair and wanted an announcement made. Purser apologized and said that this comment would be given to the Hotel Director and Cruise Director.
Mr. ^&%$ thanked Purser for assistance and left the desk.
The frequent cruisers amongst you will know that we have addressed this problem before on the blog and every cruise line …….actually I should say most cruise lines have problems of this nature. I wanted therefore to show you the new fleet wide statement that is both written in the Carnival Capers and announced at the start of the week and at other times by the Cruise Directors.
Reserving of Deck Chairs
As a courtesy to other guests, reserving of deck chairs is not permitted. Chairs left vacant for 30 minutes or longer will be reassigned by the Pool Attendant to waiting guests.
Hopefully this will help reduce the number of people who wake up at 4:00am, put a pair of shoes, a book and their youngest born child on the deck chair, go back to bed until 11:00am when they finally decide to use it…………….those days are gone…….big brother is watching.
Again for the new readers of the blog I will occasionally slap on comments from guests that will have no follow up or discussion from me afterwards. It’s just to show you all what people say…………..like this gem from yesterday.

Complaint about Taxi Driver in San Juan
Mr. &^%$# and Mrs. &^%$#
Mr. *&^%$ said that he wanted to make a complaint about San Juan and the taxi they had. They hired a taxi to take them on a tour and the car was involved in an accident. They were not hurt but they had to wait for another taxi for 35 minutes. The driver also refused to refund the cost of the tour $50 as the tour was over and the accident was coming back to the ship. Mr. $%^&* stated that he wants Carnival to pay the $50 and the $12 they had to pay to get back to the ship. Purser explained that Carnival was not responsible for the accident and the money paid and that is why we recommended Carnival tours. Guests demanded to speak to Cruise Director who was on stage. Purser said she would ask Cruise director to contact guest. Charged to Cruise Director and Purser will follow up.
I will speak to the guest later today.
OK, here are a few random photos for you.

ONE LETTER TODAY FROM THE IN THEIR OWN WORDS SECTION
Heidi is about to produce the capers for today and as we have only one computer I have to sign off and I will be back later. By the way, I just got told off because I had a bagel this morning and there are crumbs all over the keyboard…………I love the way she says all over as if I used the keyboard to toast the thing on…………there are a few crumbs…………..not even enough to make a bagel fit for an amoeba…………however there are enough to put me back in the doghouse…………again.Back soonHere I am.
Now, I have over 100 comments to reply to so as is customary now and then I will concentrate on those that are asking specific questions or need an immediate reply. I love reading your comments, each and every one of them, and I will now ask my two fingers, one of which looks like a spare rib after all the meat has been chewed off it,to dance across the keyboard and answer as many as I can.
Here we go then.
EVA………………It seems that after reading about Ron P our Piano man here on the Carnival Freedom that many of you seemed to want him to be part of our 2009 Bloggers Cruise. Well, I will indeed ask him and if he is available I will make sure he is there. Thank you for your kind words and I notice you say you are ” ew to the blog”………….not anymore because you are now part of the family…………..welcome home.
GREG BALDASARRI………………..Interesting idea mate, the best of John’s thingy…………maybe it’s too early for a greatest hits album but certainly something to think about. I still have a dream to take the best of the blogs and put them into a book……..maybe one day. The On Deck for the Cure walks will indeed continue. I wanted to do it this week but unfortunately after the Bloggers Cruise we have no supplies left. I certainly want this to be a permanent addition to the activities onboard.
Hope you are well mate. Cheers.
MARK WISER………..Hello mate. I have heard many great things about you and indeed we need to feature more of the Carnival musicians on this blog. ……………….For those of you who do not know, Mark is a piano bar entertainer on the Carnival Glory. Thanks mate for all your hard work and hopefully one day we will work together. Cheers.
BIG ED…………..The photos were great and thanks for sharing them. Yes, I knew Laura would be happy with Ron’s interview as she is a great supporter of our Piano Bars. How are things coming regarding the 2009 cruise, mate? What evil do you have planned? Please give my best to Mrs. Big Ed as always.
KUKI……………..that is the best top ten I have ever read, especially number 1. We are already starting to plan the cruise and in fact next week I have phone meetings with everyone in the office and of course will share all the news with you all. I don’t know if I mentioned in the last few blogs how wonderful it was that you gave $500 for the On The Deck For The Cure for Breast Cancer appeal………….that was so amazing of you and it’s people like you that make a difference. See you soon mate and a big hello to all the cruisemates.com readers.
SHERYL PELTON……………I just wanted to say thank you for those gracious words……………thank you.
MARK TWAIN AND A HALF……………..Another Ron fan and, as you asked if he will be there with us in New Orleans, I will tell you that if I have anything to do with it……………yes! Thanks mate and so glad that you are still enjoying the blogs.
NANNI……………….Can you please e-mail Stephanie or Roberto with the names of the people who will visit the ship on the 25th. Heidi and I look forward to buying you a glass of wine and of course I will have a Bigo Hugo for you. See you soon.
PEANUTS…………..Thanks for the clarification on the Lido Deck bartenders some of whom did not smile. I have heard the suggestion that sometimes people of some nationalities do not naturally smile and, although good people, smiling is not a normal emotion. This may well be true and I am sure many of them have good reason not to smile, however these people should not be on a Carnival Cruise Lines ship. Our mission statement includes the words “Let The Fun Begin” and that has to start with the crew. We are working very hard through our onboard training departments to make sure that every crew member exceeds the high standards we expect. Anyway, thank you for bringing this subject up and as you said the majority of our crew are indeed the best at sea.
I see you mentioned the Pistons and their 8 game winning streak. I am sorry to say that my Miami chaps are struggling more than ever and now Shaq has gone to Phoenix…………….but they will be back…………..they will rediscover why they love this game……….and the sounds of “let’s go Heat ” will echo at the NBA finals again…………….soon.
Thank you Joan for all your support to the blog and your always well written postings. Heidi and I send our best to you and your family.
MYRA BUSHNELL………………Up to the challenge………..very funny Myra. Anyway, let me answer your questions. Will I be the CD for the TA Carnival Splendor cruise to Fort Lauderdale……………well, at the time of writing the answer is yes I will be. I missed the one on here so I really don’t want to miss the one on the Carnival Splendor. I will definitely complete the European season but as to the cruises after the TA………..probably not as by then I think it will be time for a rest. Hope this is ok for you and I also hope we get to see each other on the TA or before. Cheers.
PRINCESS SUSAN AND MR CHEAP……………..Will I do the back-to-back Carnival Fantasy cruise you ask………….answer at the moment is I do not know. I will know more soon but the planning stages are just starting and as soon as I know I will let you know so Mr. Cheap can put his hand in his wallet ……………..I thought we had changed his name to Mr. Wonderful. I hope regardless that I will see you both very soon. All the best.
ROBERT………….I know you are one of the biggest supporters of our Piano Bars and, on the 40-plus cruises you have taken, there is something you enjoy so much. So, in answer to your question………….yes………….if Ron can come I will gladly have him with us for the BC in 2009. See you soon.
LISA AND ELAINE…………..Thanks for asking about Alan. Hopefully you have read my last blog …………..it’s a miracle…………he is so ugly …………….yet…………..getting better every day. Hope you are both well and please write soon.
STEVE………….How great to hear from a fellow Brit…………where are you from? You asked who the Cruise Director will be on the Carnival Freedom in July when you sail in Europe. You will be blessed with a brilliant and talented CD called Todd Wittmer from California and I know you will have a wonderful time. Thanks for your posting where you said……..and I quote………

OK, that’s enough for now……………thanks mate and have a brilliant time on the Carnival Freedom in July. Cheers.
BERNARD ANDRES……………Thanks for your kind words and please be assured that even though there are times when I do not have time to reply to each and every comment that I read everyone regardless. I am glad you enjoyed the interview with Ron and, as you requested, there will indeed be more interviews as we have done before with many people both who work on board and ashore. Hope you continue to enjoy the blog and all the best from Heidi and I.
CAROLYN AND DON……………..Although you do not have a direct question, I did want to say how humbled I was that after 25 years of attending the NASCAR thingy in Daytona that you have both given up the 2009 race for the Bloggers cruise. I hope I can be as entertaining as a Daytona 500 and one thing is for certain…………..I will be uglier than the drivers. Thanks so much, it means the world to read comments like that. See you next year.
MATT……..I am glad you have been enjoying the blogs and I am happy also to answer your questions. You asked about the ideas and new innovations that we discussed at the recent conference and when they may come into effect. Well, the world of business can move slower than a turtle through concrete but I am determined to do what I can to get them in place as soon as possible. One area that will take immediate effect will be embarkation days fleetwide. The Cruise Directors have all committed to making embarkation day as fun as a day at sea and starting in the next few weeks you will see this on every ship. Also, we now have a budget to improve the embarkation process ashore………….I cannot tell you what we have planned as this is not a secure channel (as they say on 24) but I can tell you that it will be fun! All the other concepts will take a bit of time to put in place but I assure you they are all worth waiting for………………Roger Blum our VP will be reading this and I am sure will chomping at the bit (he doesn’t look like a horse) to get started.
Your next question was “does Carnival intend to increase calls to Half Moon Cay”………………answer………….yes…………..I know now why so many people have become smitten with this piece of paradise and I know we will take as many ships there as we can.
Then you asked about reggae bands and are we keeping them unlike other cruise lines who no longer have them. Well, certainly in the Caribbean these bands play a big part in the entertainment of our guests and certainly there are no plans to stop using them.
I checked on our system and your favorite waiter Roberto is now on the Carnival Valor and you will not be seeing him on the Carnival Imagination. I know that your waiter will be just as good though and I will certainly send Roberto your kind regards.
I am glad to be able to answer your questions and please let me know as and when I can help further. Cheers.
BIG MIKE………………cattle prod it is then. Thanks mate.
MONICA AND AL…………………I am glad you had such a wonderful time here on the Carnival Freedom and, like many, I see that you loved the big screen on our Seaside Theatre. You asked if there are any plans to fit any more ships with these icons and the answer is yes. The Carnival Victory already has hers and then the Carnival Glory, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Conquest and I think the Carnival Destiny will also receive theirs. Of course the Carnival Splendor will be fitted with one as well. I know this will please you and many more people who love the experience of sitting under the stars and watching a movie. Tonight for example we have a movie called The Golden Compass which looks awesome (very American word there) on the big screen. Hope this makes you happy and all the best.
TED WRIGHT……………Please post a comment on the blog marked private and confidential and Stephanie will send directly to me. I am at your service.
LINDA HERNACKI……………….Hello my friends. You asked if there are plans for another 2009 Bloggers Cruise maybe out of Florida…………..that may be a possibility and one I will discuss with the office next week. I know that it would be popular. I will also let you know as soon as I can about the photo changes as well. My best to you and of course my mate Mike.
TERESA AND PAUL B………………I am so sorry to answer your question with a negative but unfortunately I will not be the CD for your April 12th Carnival Freedom cruise. I will be in Europe preparing and reporting on all the tours for the Carnival Splendor’s Baltic cruises. Todd will be your Cruise Director and I know you will have fun. I am sorry I cannot be there with you though and hopefully our paths will cross soon.
LV2CRUISE……………..Good question……………you asked do they have Captains who just cover vacations and do they always return to the same ship? Well, we do operate a system where, for the most part, Captain’s do return to the same ship after their break. While on vacation another Captain will cover the vessel as her commander. Everyone of our Captains is a full-time employed Captain and all are from Italy. Hope this answers your question and if you have anymore please let me know. Cheers.
DIVETRASH…………….Thanks firstly for asking me to interview Ron. It was long overdue and I am glad I finally got around to doing it. You asked if we could put some advertising on the TV for the musicians and yes is the answer. We discussed at our conference that we do not utilize the in-cabin televisions enough so look for that to change in the days ahead.
Ron, as you can see you are very popular so can you post a comment on this blog to say if you can join us all in 2009? Thanks Laura, and Heidi sends a big Knuffelen back as do I.
JUDY……………..hello Judy and I hope this blog finds you well. You asked if I would be on the Carnival Splendor during its voyage to California via South America. This was a very hard choice to make but in the end I decided not do this. The reasons were many including it coming at the end of a very busy European season, the Bloggers cruise and also to allow another Cruise Director a chance to experience a special voyage like this. I do not know who that lucky person will be but I will let you know as soon as I do. I know you will be disappointed with this news but I know it will not deter you from enjoying an experience of a lifetime. Heidi and I send you our warmest regards.
PAUL F.PIETRANGELO……………..Your card is sitting right here on the desk next to me. I know how disappointed you were in me not being here and Heidi and I felt the same. I am glad you enjoyed the gifts we sent you but I am sure one day soon we will get to meet. Until then we will remain friends in cyberspace and I truly hope you had a wonderful cruise. My kindest regards to you and your family and please write soon.
SHERRIF ROSCO P. COLTRANE……………..Just had to say hi to the Sherriff and hope he is staying safe. Get those bad boys, and Heidi and I send our best regards to you and Mrs. Sherriff.
THE ARTIST FORMELY KNOWN AS MISSING THE SMOKE FREE PARADISE………………I like your new screen name (2009bloggerscruiseherewecome) but I had to type your old one just one more time. What splendid news that you and Mrs. MTSFP will be joining Kuki and the Cruisemates gang with me on the Carnival Fantasy………….I am very happy. You asked if Heidi has had any smiley faces recently………….well……………the exhausted look on my face should be some clue. I totally understand about the Carnival Splendor and at least we will see each other on the Bloggers cruise. Heidi and I send our best to you both and thanks for all the postings you have made over the past months. Cheers mate.
SUSAN V…………….Thanks so very much for all the nice words. You asked if I would be posting the new CD schedule so everyone will be able to see who their CD will be. Yes of course, I will do this by the end of the week. We are just making a few last-minute changes and as soon as Chris Prideaux sends it to me I will be happy to slap it on. The Carnival Valor is indeed Chris Jefferson’s usual posting and I expect he will be there when you cruise. Anyway, stand by and I will post it ASAP. Cheers.
LANCE AND ILDA……………I am going to try a glass of Vialis…..whatever that is. You asked how Alan was and hopefully by now you will have seen the last blog where I told everyone he is doing so well…………it really is unbelievable. Thanks for the advice on the baggy pants and most importantly thanks you for your friendship. All the best from Heidi and I.
BIG ED……………….Can you let me know in an e-mail what your mate had problems with on his Princess cruise……….maybe I can help.
MARK HAZLIP…………….I will indeed be the CD for your cruise on March 8th. Now, you asked if I have a favorite excursion in San Juan, St.Thomas and St.Marteen. I do indeed, however, can you let me know a bit more about what you like to do before I recommend them. Do you prefer active adventures, swimming and snorkeling or easy-going island tours. Let me know ASAP and I will be happy to tell you what I think you may enjoy the most. Look forward to hearing from you.
MEGHAN…………..How wonderful to hear from you and to find out that Gabby (one of my favorite dancers..ssssshhhh don’t tell the others) is your sister. Well, what can I tell you. She finished the Jump Jive and Wail show last night and the audience gave her and the cast 2 big standing ovations. She is dating an Italian called Rocco who looks just like a young Sylvester Stallone and the baby is due in July……………………………………….OK, just kidding. She is doing well and seems very happy however I will make sure that she speaks to you more often. Look out for a few photos of her in the future. I am sure she misses you very very much. Thanks for taking the time to write and please keep reading my thingy.
That’s all folks. Time has run away with me. However, I want to say thank you so much to all the people who just posted a comment that said Hi and welcome home. You are all so fantastic to take the time to write and although I may not have replied in person your warm greetings mean so much.
I have been thinking the last few weeks about the Bloggers Cruise and I want to change one aspect for next year. I cannot be the Cruise Director. Although it was great to perform and be on stage, it took away so many opportunities to be amongst you and I do not want that to happen again. All of you paid money, hard earned money to cruise with me and the next time I must give you all my undivided attention. I apologize if some of you felt that you did not receive enough personal time with me and I will make sure that this will not be the case on the Carnival Fantasy 2009 cruise………………….I actually have a cunning plan which will involve something very special…………………tell you more about that soon.
I just got back from a trip downtown to St.Thomas and the place was packed. There were two Carnival ships………..that’s 6000 guests…….the Queen Mary………….not sure but between 2000 and 3000……………some ugly ship that looked like a load of flying saucers had crashed into the side of it……….that’s another 3000 plus one more ship that, while docked a gang of teenagers had graphited a load of colourful rubbish on the bow and stern…………….that’s another 2000………..Grand Total……….13,000 or thereabouts. Add onto this the hotel guests……….that’s another 12 people………and you get the picture. I like St. Thomas, I like the facilities and the shopping is amazing however there are one or two aspects that quite frankly get on my nerves.
First there are the ” barkers”……….I mentioned these folks in a recent blog about Grand Turk where all is peace and harmony. However, it appears that since I was last in St.Thomas these barkers have gone through a breeding frenzy and there are now millions of them. Their job is to stand outside a shop, cafe or bar and as you walk past them scream in your ear what’s on the menu, how much money you will save if you buy jewelry from them and that they have the coldest beer in town…….some do this so aggressively that they actually bully people into going in………..especially the jewelry shops. I really do not understand why the government of St. Thomas allows this. You have a street full of classy shops selling the world’s most exclusive brands and then outside you have these crazed men and women screaming at you like a drill instructor…………….it spoils the whole concept of “world class shopping” that St.Thomas advertises………………..it’s the same as making a beautiful chocolate soufflé and covering it with the stuff a Skunk fires out of his bottom when its mad.
Anyway, we had a little walk around, had some lunch at our favorite little café called Bobby’s………..I go there for the Conch Chowder by the way which is historic and then it was time to come back and send this blog thingy and this leads me to the most annoying thing in St.Thomas…………..the taxi drivers.
Now, while many I am sure are nice folks they all have one thing in common…………..they will not leave until every seat is taken………I mean every seat and that means you need to be prepared to rub thighs with Mr. and Mrs. Stranger. The taxi ride from the ship to downtown took 10 minutes with a 22 minute (yes I timed it ) waiting period while the driver filled every seat. The bus this time was one of the open sided safari buses and as we sat there waiting for every seat to be taken more and more people recognized me despite my disguise of Miami Heat baseball hat and glasses………………I was therefore obliged to perform 20 minutes of comedy while our driver shouted the word “downtown” at everyone getting off the ship. Finally, 22 minutes later every seat was filled which was very lucky because I had run out of clean jokes and was considering telling my famous Elephant and the Elf story. So, eventually the driver got in the cab and turned on the engine. However, before moving away he got on the PA system of his cab and explained that he offered a $20 island tour stating that it was half the price of the one they sold on the ship. He then got out of his seat and then walked up and down asking all 22 of us if we wanted a tour…………..everyone declined………..they just wanted to go shopping. I wanted to tell the driver that the tour sold from the ship included much more than what he was offering ………..however the nudge in the ribs I was receiving from Heidi told me to say nothing. Eventually we set off. I had Heidi on one side and a lady from Oregon on the other………….our thighs were now glued together as we bumped down the road. Then, unbelievably he stopped short of downtown…………..he got on the PA system and told us he would be collecting the $4 per person now as it was too busy to do so downtown. So, out he got, collected the money and off we went but not before he reminded us one more time that he offered a tour of the island which he would now reduce to $15.
We eventually arrived and I got off the bus taking a small slice of Mrs. Oregon’s thigh with me.
On the way back …………it was worse. We walked to the waterfront to get a taxi back. A man shouted “back to the ship”……….yes we said…………and he led Heidi and I and two other couples to his taxi which was an 18-seater minibus………..a closed minibus………and he packed 18 people into the thing, some of them twice the size of me. It was then a few moments after setting off that we all realized it was very hot………..can you turn on the air conditioning someone asked………….it’s on full said the driver…………..well the knob may have been turned to full but it had the same effect as an asthmatic hamster blowing at you through a straw…………………..by the time we got there we were all dripping wet. Just before we arrived to the port the driver got on his PA and said “thank you for coming to St.Thomas……….please come again……………and tips are appreciated.’…………..well I and many others think St. Thomas is wonderful……….we will be back……………as for a tip…………….get a new van.
Time to go but I wanted to say one more ………oh no……………my computer has gone mad…………the paste button is stuck…………I can’t stop it……………….it’s…………..oh no…………….

“even better than RCCL”
of course!
John,
It was nice to hear about St. Thomas. My husband and I were there for our honeymoon. It is a beautiful port. It has grown quite a bit since our first visit there thirty-four years ago.
I wanted to say one thing………Carnival is so much better than RCCL- there is absolutely no comparison. Many years ago we tried the other cruise line…….came back to it maybe ten years ago and felt like we were being herded through like cattle. To make matters worse, they literally did not care about anything the last day of the cruise. We would all receive our expenses statement the next morning and our credit card would suffer. The next group would be boarding the ship and it was all about them! It was sickening!
Thank goodness- Carnival is like the old Maxwell House Coffee slogan- It is “Good to the last drop”.
Carnival provided quality service up until you arrive at the airport to return home.
We can not wait until it is time for the Splendor!
Sometimes it seems time is moving so slowly!
That’s all for now!
Ruth
John,
You don’t know how pleased I am to hear you will not be the CD on the next Blogger’s Cruise.

Well, “better than RCCL”…. I will have to take their word on it because in over 25 years, we have never sailed anything but Carnival.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!”
One comment about shopping :
We have not been to Ocho Rios, Jamaica in YEARS. When the Imagination went last week, we almost did not get off the ship, because the last time we were there we were literally physically drug into a shop by force and I said “never again”.
Well, I have learned to never say never….
we needed a magnet from the port. So, we ventured out. Knowing how easily DJ gets spooked, we headed for the very first souvenir shop we saw….determined to get off and back on the ship as quickly as possible.
Yes, every taxi driver we passed asked if we needed a taxi….but they did it POLITELY!! Yes, several ladies asked if I wanted my long hair braided…but they did it POLITELY!! Aggression was totally REMOVED from the equation.
We were so comfortable that we walked up to the Island Village and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of looking for a Breitling watch for me and talking with the store manager.
I asked him about the remarkable change and he told me the Ocho Rios police are in plain clothes and move with the tourist. If someone gets out of line, they get a strike. Three strikes and a taxi driver loses his taxi priviledges.
I could not believe the difference. We leisurely walked back to the ship and it was a wonderful afternoon.
Now I can’t speak for the rest of Jamaica (and we did not walk past the Island Village) but BRAVO to the Ocho Rios port!!
Brother John!
Thank you so much for that warm welcome to the blog thingy family!!
I am sooooooo darned pleased with today as I can report that I am now confirmed for our family reunion on the Fantasy, my favorite ship of all time!!! And she will be dressed up yet again I hear before we sail her in 2009…so immediately I am planning to get on board this spring so I can see her one more time (this will be my third), before next year with the family, which will be my fourth happy time with the magical Fantasy. Now if only….
If only what, you say? OK Bro, I will tell you. My favorite ship of all time (did I mention that? Yes I see I did) and of all the sad events……………..my very special pin holder, that holds all of my most special of pins from the happiest of places I have visited,………………is …………….BLANK where the Fantasy’s place of honor would be! Can you imagine….
I have assured that blank space to hang in there because my Bro is very very special and just might be able to pinch the budget…..I mean to say, anyone that is sooooo good at making sooooo many smile….could surely make that blank space smile………but enough said about that.
I am more excited about this cruise every day! It is like waiting for Christmas to see what else is coming up in your announcements!!!! I am a Bayou Blogger with Cruise Critics and we too are planning some special things, our boards are busy busy everyday with all of us poor souls trying to make that calendar MOVE it!!
Today’s blog was hilarious, what a surprise. I am printing it again, only if I may have your permission for one slight edit on my personal copy as follows…
ALWAYS better than RCCL……just sayin…
Love to and Heidi,
Eva
I have e-mailed a few times about our wedding in St. Thomas, while cruising on Freedom, which leaves Miami on April 5th. SO–I have another question! Heidi…will you please check with the salon to see what the earliest appointment available is to have my hair fixed? We leave the ship at 9:15 for our 10:15 wedding on Magen’s Bay. I am hoping for 7:30 appointment??!!?!?!? John – I am sure you understand why I feel the need to ask for Heidi’s help on this one!
Thanks for keeping your thingy up!
Hi John,
Just wanted to introduce myself and my husband Robert. We will be joining you on the Bayou Bloggers cruise. We sailed with you on the second sailing of the Liberty in Europe and totally enjoyed everything you did. Can’t wait to see you again on this next cruise. Glad to know we will have you all to ourselves! Love your writing, look forward to reading it everyday.
Sheryl
Hi John in my favorite place – St. Thomas,
I love that place so much that the year after I was on the Ecstasy cruise, I booked a week at the resort that the Kon Tiki went to on its excursion. Of course, there’s no better place to shop either. I’m really looking forward to going there with the Miracle in the Fall.
The deck chair problem is definitely universal. I saw it happen in front of me on the Imagination, but unfortunately no one removed the stuff from the chairs all morning. And I saw the people who left it roaming around the ship. You just can’t win.
Gonna miss my bus, catch you tomorrow,
Carol
John, you ask what evil we are planning for the 2009 Bloggers Cruise. Well a lot depends on how well you preform to the smiling stick. Plus the good new that you told us today that you wouldn’t be the CD on that cruise opened up many more doors for our planning.
You mentioned the possibilty of doing a BTB for it. Since you also mentioned doing something in New Orleans pre-cruise I guess the BTB would be after the BC, right? That would make a nice 9 days vacation for you. We might get to smoke that palm tree yet.
BIG ED
PS. will forward you that Email when I get it.
John, you, my friend, are in rare form. Being back aboard as Cruise Director certainly does agree with you. Once again I’m grinning like a fool after having read you blog.
I, and I’m sure everyone else was thrilled by two things… 1) the policy on reserving deck chairs 2) that you will not be acting as cruise director for the next Blogger’s Cruise!! Certainly, it’s not that people wouldn’t enjoy you in that capacity but being able to spend some time just being friends would be vastly better.
I think that your sticky paste function has infected my machine as well…

While we weren’t able to be on the 2008 Blogger’s cruise, my wife and I are looking forward to the 2009 one. After reading your posts, and those from Kuki, about the 2008 cruise, I can see why you decided to devote your time to the bloggers and forgo the CD duties. I don’t know how you survived the week! Looking forward to meeting you and Heidi in New Orleans.
Hola JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I already sent the email to Roberto. We appreciate your invitation for a glass of wine but a diet coke will do.
Thanks!!!!!!!
Im excited im going back to my ship!! Im going to see my friends and Im going to get my huggo and my picture.
Love you and see you soon!!!

John wrote the Sheriff back!!!!!! Guess I can void the arrest warrant I had out for him. 86 more days until the Glory cruise!! Mama Sheriff is looking forward to it. What are the dress up nights for this cruise (Nassau, St Thomas, St Maartin)?
The Sheriff got bit on the hand recently by a bad guy. Well, the Sheriff got a shot and the bad guy is still resting comfortably in my jail!! Yes the Sheriff was wearing leather gloves!!
Just goes to show taking a bite out of crime is not all that!

John, so good to hear from you. Your blog continues to delight a whole new generation of bloggers.
John, can I please take exception to one thing you said about being the Cruise Director on the past Bloggers’ Cruise. While it was not the original plan for you to be the CD as well as the object of our affections, you pulled it off with customary aplomb. I felt you were actually more accessible than ever, and open to almost anything. Keep in mind, too, that many of your bloggers had never sailed with you as CD, and as such they experienced a rare treat that will further the family of Carnival Cruisers. So please do not apologize just because a few wanted more of your already thinly-stretched time. Most I spoke with were very pleased.
How about this – you sit in the audience, and let your bloggers be the CDs. As you already know, while the Carnival entertainers are absolutely the best, especially those from Valdosta, Georgia, the fact is your audience is the most entertaining of all! Case in point – the Legends Show. That guy who played Frank Sinatra was handsome, brilliant, and quite the hit with the ladies!(LOL) Not only did you not pay for that entertainment–the amount of excitement that the guests experienced was absolutely priceless!
That said, if you want to be CD, be CD–that’s what you are so qualified to do. I know it was difficult to wear both hats–but you did it, and did it well. I told my wife just the other day–I want that job. I want the responsibility, the years at sea, the blonde wife. John May (Elton) asked me on the cruise what I would say if Carnival offered me the job–I told him my two word answer–”Bye Dear.”
Love to Heidi, and to her husband, who should consider himself the luckiest man in the world.
Rus Franklin
Hi John & Heidi,
John if Heidi is overusing you and you need a breather, just give me a call and I’ll fly in, with fly down to do stunt double duty
I’m delighted to say that Bloggers 2 has taken off…over 170 now signed up, and chomping at the bit, with our CruiseMates & John Heald Blog2NOLA group.
I know you’ve done alot of thinking about the bloggers who didn’t get enough “face time” with you on bloggers 1. However, honestly I’m not certain it’s a great idea to give up all CD duties on Bloggers2.
By all indications Bloggers 2 is going to be at least twice as big, so assuming 1500 bloggers onboard, I don’t think it’s reasonable for 1500 people to think they are going to get to sit and have dinner or drinks with you and Heidi. It would have to be a 45 day cruise, and take 83,976 diet cokes, for you to spend even a few minutes of one on one time with everybody.
And aside from that, those present wouldn’t get to see your “marriage game” or “bed time story”. I do think you could open up some of your time by allowing an assistant CD to introduce the shows and entertainers…. and attend to the daytime day-to-day operations, and responsibilities.
That would certainly open up more time for day time bloggers activities with you. It would also open up time during some evenings where you could possibly move around some of the lounges and visit with boggers in more intimate surroundings.
Sadly, no matter what you do, whether it’s a group of 700 or 2000, there’s going to be people who feel they didn’t get to spend as much time with you as they’d like. It’s hard to be a rock star isn’t it?
I do understand everyone wanting to spend time with you. You and Heidi are a GREAT couple! But I think the bloggers also should consider how much fun they can have with each other as well. I know we’re planning on some social mixers outside of all the bloggers activities you’re planning to overload the bloggers with FUN!
I also believe that ALL the bloggers know that you’ll use your absolute best efforts to improve on Bloggers 1, and that’s a big part of the reason so many folks are lining up a year early to make sure they have their cabins booked.
One other “bright idea” .. maybe we should do a more typical NewlyWed/Not so NewlyWed game with you and Heidi as contestants… and me asking the questions
I apologise for the LONG post…but had to spit out my thoughts, as I knew you felt bad about some aspects of Bloggers 1…. more than was entirely warranted, in my view.
If you read this entire thing it’s probably time for you to get back to Heidi… work, work, work, work
Regards,
Kuki

Your descriptions are hilarious, John. The air conditioning being like an asthmatic hamster, had me in stitches! My husband, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOb often hears me guffawing from upstairs and knows I’m reading your blog.

Hi John
Just one more question to ask you! I have been to Naples 3 times now, fantastic place, but we’re looking for something different to do. We’ve done Pompeii, Vesuvius and Capri and I’m wondering if you have any suggestions on anything else to do in Naples? Thanks!
Another great blog! Thanks for the reply! Yes, you ARE better than RCCL! Their rock climbing walls and ice rinks pale in comparison to a carnival ship! Although I have cruised with them more than Carnival, I think I’ve been converted to the good side! Really excited about the cruise now in July! Can’t wait! I am a fellow Brit, although from the better part, Bonnie Scotland!
P.S. Just have to add this!
Think I’ll quote myself again,
..” even better than RCCL “
..” even better than RCCL “
Good Afternoon John and Heidi,
Thank you so much for the smiles and laughs each day. I love the photos you post of the “behind the scenes” of the ship. It’s interesting to see what we as cruisers never get to see. I am glad to hear that you will not be the CD for the Fantasy cruise. Don’t take that wrong you are a “brilliant” CD, the best in the Industry, in my honest opinion, but it will be so nice to be able to spend time with you and Heidi without you having the responsibility of the position. BIG ED and the EVIL Crew haven’t started planning anything yet but I’m sure that will change soon. I think everyone is trying to get back to “normal dull every day life” and we’re all still having “cruise shock”. You know no room service, no buffet, no wait staff to bring dinner, no turn down service and worst of all no towel critters! Oh well the count down to the Bloggers Cruise has begun!
I will be happy to see and hear “Let’s Go Heat”. It does my little bitty heart good to see great competition with all the NBA teams. I don’t like to see a great team like the Heat go down the way they have. I think the trade is the best thing to happen for the Heat. Size does matter and I think Shaq was a hinderance this season. The Heat will come back better than ever! As for the Pistons, they have won 9 in a row and Billups, Hamilton and Wallace are going to the All Star game. Hamilton will be competing in the 3 point shoot around. Cool! I can’t wait for Playoffs.
Take care,
Joan
Dear John,
New to your blog thingy, but already addicted! It gives me a glimpse into your life on the ship and some of the things I never get a chance to see. I’ll be meeting you on the next Blog Cruise v.2. I followed the activities of the last Bloggers Cruise, through Kuki’s daily log, and wanted to be in the middle of it so badly! I hate to miss out, when everyone else is having a good time!
A question regarding your position as CD, which departments are you responsible for? And how do you EVER remember which hat you are wearing? What a challenge!
Hi again John and Heidi – You are sounding much better these days after last Friday’s day from Hell. We have a question regarding safe swimming at St.Thomas and St.Marten. We are looking for a beach with facilities such as restrooms, chairs and umbrellas. We love swimming but want to fel safe. Thanks so much and have an easy end to your week. Cheers, Nora, Peg and Lynne
What’s a RCCL? Is that a british form of torture?
Hey, I loved what you called me, so I had to create yet another new screen name – I just hope I can remember these passwords over time.
BTW – can I get you to reserve me a deck chair for the first sea day of the Blogger’s 2009 cruise? I an not sure if I will need it that day, but hate to be bothered trying to find one that is unoccupied. Just put your thingy on the chair and I will know which one is mine.
Thanks

YEAH!!!!!! BIG SCREENS COMING FOR ALL SHIPS!!!!!Tks,Tks,Tks!Now What about Itinerary for South Pacific like Princess Cruises embarking from Papeeta Tahiti???Love your Blog Thingy John&Heidi!!
Thank you John for the inside track on St. Thomas! We will be there in September and will prepare ourselves for the taxi situation! I worried that St. Thomas would turn into another Cozumel with the barkers and you have verified that fact. We have been to St. Thomas twice before and on our upcoming trip, we plan on heading to St. John. I didn’t see any excursions listed on our cruise but I am sure not all are listed and there will be others available on the ship too (we hope).
I know that today you were docked in St. Maarten but still can’t figure out why the ship is docked with it’s aft section facing the port. From the cam, I couldn’t tell if another ship was in front (or in this case behind you) of the Freedom. Looking forward to a full review of that island too!
Please let us know if you do plan a 2nd bloggers cruise from Florida. I would love to go on that one. NO is just too far to drive. I suggest if you do a 4-5 nighter, do the one out of Jacksonville. It’s a wonderful port with a great staff there. We sailed on the Celebration in December and were very impressed with the Port of Jacksonville completely! It would be a very centralized location for our northern friends rather than driving to Miami. Keep us posted.
How’s the finger doing? Hope it’s healing quickly!
I am really glad to hear the new “chair saving” policy that has been put in place. I just hope that it will be enforced. I am sure you will have plenty of feedback on this but I say thank goodness, finally!
Thank you for the note about the CD schedule. I look forward to it. I also am very happy to hear Chris may still be on the Valor when we sail too.
Have a wonderful day!
John,
Thank you for the warm welcome.. I have been reading your thingy for a while now and find myself totally hooked. You are my daily laugh & your way with words always plants a smile on my face ear to ear. Always feel like I’m cruisin when here with you. Hope to someday sail on your ship and get to experience all the wonderfulness I have read & heard about you. Wishing you both all the best with smiley..
Take care,
M~
“even better than RCCL” – where else do you have the opportunity to win a solid 24 karat plastic gold ship on a stick
I have one from each of my Fun Ship cruises!!
John/Heidi – I do have a question I would like answered: We are sailing on the Valor 4/27 – I need to know which excrusion to take in Roatan – Tabyana Beach Day or Coral Cay Beach Break – I can’t figure out which is the nicer beach – If you can have someone give me some feedback that would be great!
Great blog today John, and Yes I will be anxiously awaiting news on a possible bloggers 3 cruise in 2009. So glad Nanette and her family will see you in P.R. on the 25th! She has so been looking forward to that. Well tomorrow is Valentine’s day and also THURSDAY! Any SPECIAL plans with Heidi? Happy baby making! Hi Heidi! Someday we will get to meet I’m sure! Linda & Mike
Hi John….great blog as usual. Those barkers can be annoying just like in Cozumel. The hubby and i are looking forward to our next cruise in April aboard the Carnival Liberty, 59 days and counting. At the risk of sounding like I am looking for “Freebies” what ever happened to the placemats Carnival would pass out on the last night of the cruise. We so enjoyed receiving them. I would have them laminated and then use them every night for dinner. We have a nice little collection going and even though we might not be actually sailing, we could eat on a different ship every night. LOL Thanks for all you do.
Diane
John,
Is it February 2009 yet… Has the Bayou Blogger’s Cruise begun?? Next Week???
I know I just got off the Ecstasy — after you stole Goose from us — but as I mentioned, Kirk was FANTASTIC!!! But with this homesick feeling for a cruise, already… I want it be February again! February 2009!
Your blog keeps my excitment stirred. Thank you! How wonderful to be back reading it again.
CARNIVAL is indeed the BEST! I have convince a loyal “surfing cruiser” to give CCL a try… She’s never sailed Carnival, but knows it isn’t up to her standards… I gave them a try and now will only cruise CARNIVAL… But I have her cruising with me in December and I KNOW she will love it!
Keep these blogs coming!!
Regards,
Kirsten
Hey John, I took a cab in Chicago last week and wasn’t happy with the driver…can Carnival refund my $20??? What a hoot that someone has the —guts to ask for a refund for a cab they booked on their own! Love the “behind the scenes” photos. Thanks
john you got it wrong you are better then anyone not just rccl
you do your part with ron and we are sure he will do his part and be part of blog #2 cruise, laura will also help with that. Yes I do love the piano bar, it is great.
I think everyone will be part of blog 2 weather you are cd or not, but the idea of you not being the cd is great and will give everyone more time with you and heidi.
John have you seen the promotion video on the carnival dream, it is amazing, now you can’t use the joke does the elevator go to the back of the ship, because on that ship it goes to the front back sides and up and down…….
see you soon.
robert
Dear John and Heidi,
BETTER than RCCL…without a doubt! I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but we tried the “Other” cruise line once, just to see what everyone was raving about. Apparently, “they” never cruised on Carnival. We missed everything that we came to love about all of our previous Carnival cruises. We couldn’t wait to book another cruise after that one, just to get the RCCL experience out of our systems! There is NO comparison. We are intrigued by your cryptic message about “not” being the cruise director in 2009. We find that HARD to believe! We are sure that you have some devious plan worked out where you share the duties with perhaps, Wee Jimmy? John, there is NO WAY that you would be able to be on a Blogger’s Cruise and NOT be CD! Looking forward to this new wrinkle of yours! Glad to hear that Alan is doing well. Will we see him in 2009?
John, apparently Rus has been smoking palm leaves. Handsome, brilliant and quite the hit with the ladies? I think I missed something along the way…LOL!
John, we LOVE what you do. We love the way that you do it. It really is true when you hear folks say that once you’ve sailed with John Heald as CD, you are spoiled. I must say that the best compliment came from Ken, the Maitre d’ during our dining time (who is brilliant, by the way!) He was talking to us about you and how he admired the way that you handled your position. You could see he was very impressed with you and the way you entertained people. He said you are the best there is. ‘Nuf said!
Much success to you and Heidi on your attempts to expand the Heald family.
Lance & Ilda.
Hi,
My parents are on this cruise and they are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. This is their first “honeymoon” as it wasn’t in the cards 25 years ago…..Do you send messages to passengers? If so could you wish them a Happy Valentines Day from all their family here in Cape Breton, Canada??? Thanks!!!
Their names are Winston and Dianne Ingraham and they are one wonderful couple and we love them so much.
Love from Colette, Nicole and Winston Jr. plus our spouses and their 5 grandchildren!!!
p.s love your blog and I plan to continue reading for a long time. Heidi is great too…she should blog along with you!!!!
Dressing Room!
Oh my god, it looks so clean and organized ! We were sliding on beads and feathers, looking for the “shoe bag” and the luxury of a new pair of tights for that evenings show!
I didn’t smoke, but “back in the day” you ran through a cloud of cigarette smoke while gasping for air during a fast change.
Then you had to make sure Ziegfried’s tiger was sitting where it should be ( they were an act in our show ‘74) ….. it liked birds ( feathers!!)
Thanks for those photos!
Hi! To all my fellow dancers from a “retired” one!
Kathy (and Paul)
I hope you take Kuki’s suggestion about you and Heidi being a part of the newlywed/not so newlywed game. That would really be a special treat for all of us on the blogger’s cruise.
Happy “smiley” Valentine’s Day.
Ann
Hello John
Great Post
Oh My Gosh
I love Twigletts, one of the many exports from the British Isles(including You) that I love! Yummy! Never had them for breakfast though..
I agre with the policy on the deck chairs not being reserved, waslked around looking for s chair on the freedom for quite awhile found a lot of empty chairs wearing the latest ensembles in towels and books and other assundries indicating reservationists residing there.
Been to St. Thomas twice thanks to CCL. Love it but don’t like the “hawkers” either, I hate to be nagged ino shopping. Poor John that Taxi ride with the party of 18 and minicule air conditioning had me in stitches. Your description of the AC with the hamster blowing thru the straw brought back a hidden memorie when I did CPR on a pet Guinea Pig of my son’s with a straw many years ago. Pumped his lil chest with my fingers and put the straw in his mouth cos I wasn’t blowing into his from mine,,, LOL
To answer your question A Kahuna is a hawaiian name for a shaman OR also known for a man with a big stomach. That was Mr T’s halloween costume in a hawaiian shirt and his stomach preceeded him in the parade…(Hence the name)
Loved the pix from backstage, U can tell they change in a hurry!
Take Care
See you in 359 days

Good evening Mr. Heald. My wife and I were very appreciated of what you and Heidi gave to us on our cruise and yes we thoroughly enjoyed this cruise. It was fantastic, words hard to explain how great we felt about the cruise. About the fact that we were not able to meet together, that is life and I had to understand your situation. I will always respect you and what you are doing in your job. We are planning a cruise for next year and if you are anywhere in the vicinity of a Carnival ship, we may still meet. If you could at least let me know what ship and itinerary in the Caribbean I would definitely chose that ship and itinerary. Will you be on the Freedom or the Splendor cruising the Caribbean? Well I have to continue my blog about my cruise so that others can enjoy the Freedom and the fun that they can do on it. Ciao.
Paul F. Pietrangelo
Hi John,
Thanks for keeping the blog thingy going. I really do enjoy reading your blogs. Reading your blogs helps the time pass between cruises. In a way, I get to cruise everyday.
We are cruising on the Imagination July 14 – 19 going to Grand Turk, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau. We enjoy snorkling. Which port do you reccommend for snorkling? What do you reccommend for each port? We have to visit Atlantis while in Nassau because our daughter wants to go there and we did not go the last time. We promised her we would go this time.
Have a good day.
John,
I was asking about “your” favorite excursions in St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and San Juan. We are up for any thingy. I was considering may a tour in San Juan, then depending what port you think has the best snorkeling, shopping, things to see.
Thanks again,
Mark
Hi John: Another great blog. I’ve been enjoying them since day one which is almost a year ago. In one of your responses today, you mentioned that you will not be the CD on the Splendor for the trip around South America to Los Angeles. We are sailing on the Splendor on Jan. 10th with about 50 other people to celebrate our friends 50th anniversary. Last year you told me that you would be our CD on that trip. Is that still true? I sure hope so. Please let us know.
Thanks,
Regards,
Terry
John,
Not much of a tanner of pool-goer but I can see people getting angry over this. As for the taxi driver, it seems as though accidents DO happen and they should have just shrugged it off (or, you could’ve come down from stage and made them part of the show). The Kung Fu Master is an up and coming Jackie Chan by the looks of it.
_BigMike
John,
Question:
During the transatlantic crossing, on 27 April, do you ever have requested programming on the big screen? Specifically, the Formula 1 GRAN PREMIO DE ESPANA TELEFONICA 2008?
Just wondering.
If the Majic Stick is Correct and the Majic happens soon…I think you and Heidi and Bambino (that would have been born by BC2009)should be able to both be on “Vacation” with us and only participate in our bloggers events. Reguardless of comments from Bloggers 2008…we enjoyed every minute of our cruise !! See you onboard Freedom for Cruise360 March 9th John for lunch !!
Mark (McFrog2)
Hi John,
Why is it that when you mention all the companies in your group you always miss out Ocean Village?
Is it the poor relation that no one talks about? The uncle at the wedding that you know is there but no-one talks to?
Thanks
DM
Hi John
great posting – good to see you in fine form.
Keep them rolling in the aisles and say hi to Heidi for me

Goedemorgen/Goedeavond John & Heidi,
I’ve got a question about the splendor (i now there are a lot). We are booked for the original inaugural sailing of the 13th of july. Will this still be the official inaugural ? Will the naming be on the 13th ? Would be very nice… Hope Angelina Joly will join us
Tot ziens aan boord!
Karl from The Netherlands
Entertaining as ever! You give me a great laugh with each new blog entry! Guests don’t change much, do they? I’ll be glad to see the new chair policy in action next time I do a Caribbean cruise…I noticed it wasn’t an issue in Europe as many of the “older folk” don’t spend much time on deck! Glad you’re having fun in the Caribbean–we were in St Thomas at Christmas and noticed the same thing about people calling us in….didn’t much like it! Gloria
A sweet Happy Valentine’s Day to John & Heidi, Roberto and all the Bloggers.
I’m still thinking about St. Thomas. And of all the times I’ve been there I have never taken a real excursion to see the island. Just the one to Magen’s Bay and Paradise Point, and walking around in Charlotte Amalie. I think this time I will try to go to Mountaintop. I prefer to do my shopping at Havensight early in the morning – definitely less congested and most of the same bargains.
Enjoy the rest of the day,
Carol
John I wonder if you pass a request on to Ken. I wonder if he would keep you provided with sugar free jam until we can bring you some more on the Fantasy next year. I’m sure you are out of it by now and it is a long time to wait for us to bring it next year.
Carolyn and Don
PS some good advice, don’t get bagel crumbs with jam on the keyboard……talking about the doghouse……………. whew.
Give Heidi and hug and a Happy Valentines day from myself and Don
We were thinking of going to St Thomas soon, but it doesn’t sound like there is anything desireable about it if you want to do something other than sit on the beach. We’ve been to Cozumel, Calica, the Caymans, Key West, and (thanks to you) we will be on the Panama Canal cruise and visit Ocho Rios and Cartagena. So, where else can we go in the Caribbean/Gulf that is interesting and fun if you are in your 60’s?
Although I seldom comment, I read your blog every day and enjoy it so much. I know that I will be informed, entertained, kept up to date on the cruising world, and best of all, have the most laughs that I am likely to get all day!
Prior to becoming addicted to your blog it would not have occurred to me to take a Carnival cruise. I am rethinking that position!
Keep up the good work. (Oh, and if you could solve the deck chair problem once and for all we would all applaud you.)
Dear John,
I have gone on several Carnival cruises with you and everytime I go I wish you were the CD on all of them. I really have enjoyed this blogger thingy and I read it every day now. You are the best and the funniest CD that I have ever experienced. I have been on at least 25 cruises (not all Carnival) and Carnival is the best. I will be doing back to back cruises starting Feb. 23, 2008 and I was so excited when I read you will be the CD. I am just joining my husband on the first week of the back to back but will be with 12 other family members on the second week. They have never seen or heard you before and I can’t wait for them to experience you as the CD. I’m so happy for you and Heidi. I hope you do get to experience how wonderful a little child is and how they bring you so much happiness. I really never do anything like writing on a blog but just had to tell you how enjoyable it is for me every day. Your the best. Cathy and Herb Snyder. We will be in cabin 2258 in another week. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Oh boy, what a trip! We will be there in 55 days. Our transportation is managed by Royal Ocean Events as we are getting married there – hopefully it will be better experience
))))))
please respond..
Hi john,
several rumours about whether or not you will be the CD on Freedom april TA.. reports that you may not be but will be joining the ship at some point to assist or counsel whomever it will be.. do you know at this point where the truth lies?? we have a good no. of Cruise Critic members on this cruise and plans to add to the Carnival FUN are in place.. can you let me know the person to contact to clear time and place for some of these Cruise Critic events.. ??.. thanks.. you can reply here or at my Cruise Critic email addie..
John,
Since you wont be the cruise director on the next BC then you will have time to help me wash the boat!! If I have to earn my way…dont you to?? I am enjoying this blog thingy. Mom was the only one who read it before, but now that I have sailed with you and understand why my parents said you were the best CD ever… I read it every day…when you post that is. Tell Heidi I said hi… and about that stick thingy…mom explained it to me and said if all goes well I might have to baby sit. What is that about??
Your friend,
AJ
John, It’s Valentine’s Day and Thursday, what a lucky guy you are!
I’m voting for you NOT to be the CD for Bloggers2, not having to deal with the day-to-day JOB of being a CD, would leave you open to do the shows, parties, etc., etc. with just the Bloggers (will there be any normal people on this ship?). I am hoping you still plan to do your bedtime story, and your other signature pieces. Personally, I find it very tough to find time to do my work, when we have any kind of party or event going on in the office. And expect it was the same for you on Bloggers1. (Which I had to enjoy from in front of the computer.)
Bloggers2 – watch out, here I come. Booked with the marvelous, fun loving, friendly, crazy krew of the Bayou Bloggers of Cruise Critic. We can’t wait!
Having sailed both blank of the seas and Carnival, I am more inclined to stay with Carnival, and your blog is a big reason.
Kisses and hugs to both you and the lovely Heidi, and would you please let her at the computer so she can do a blog for us?
Diane from Texas
Dear Heidi and John,
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!!!
Good Day John and Heidi,
I will be with you on the July 13 sailing of the Splendor and I am also booked on the entire South American trip…… now I have a wish and wonder if you can help grant it. I have always thought it would be fun to be Dolly Parton………so would like to be your understudy in July and then I could fill in for you on South American trip since you have confirmed you will not be there.
The countdown to July 13 is now at 150…….my how time flies. The shore excursions look fantastic and I have actually booked a couple but St Petersburg is very daunting with so much to see and only 2 days to do it.
I don’t comment to often but do enjoy reading the blog every day and want you and Heidi to know just how much I appreciate the extra time you make in your busy daily schedule to inform and entertain us. That goes for Roberto and Stephanie also.
Valentines Day and Thursday………maybe this will be the magic needed……………good luck!
Have a wonderful day
Kersplott
John and of course Heidi,
hoe u Heidi bent hoop ik u geen john in het hondhuis aan vaak zet. Hij betekent werkelijk goed. Kan tot versie van de bloggerscruise 2.0 wachten niet.
Ok now that I spoke with Heidi on to John, diden’t know I spoke dutch now did you, just wait till the next bloggers cruise. Now I know this is a subject we the members of the Evil Crew of Captain ED are probably happy to hear that you will not be the CD for the 2009 cruise.

wow sorry I don’t know what came over me, there
You know I have to admit it to my fellow bloggers than in may I will be on a ship with a stupid anchor on it’s side and even worse a wall of rocks on it’s funnel. This has saddened me greatly, so I have decided to dedicate this time to be a spy for all my friends and send amusing complaints to the CD about the fact that there is no falling rock sign anywhere on deck and how they have a flood on deck in the aft and the water looks like it’s really moving. I’m sorry bloggers and of course John and Heidi Roberto and everyone else, but I did not book this cruise, I was invited on it and well you know a cruise is a cruise after all. So lets get back to work ..” even better than RCCL “

The answer is no to the Inaugural 7-13 sail !We were booked from day 1 ..May 10th 2007 the day before we left for the Freedom and Rome. We have since cancelled. There is a July 2nd and a June 30th before us! I am really disappointed as we were looking forward to being “the first” in the Cat 12 suite ! Alas, I will stay home this time!

Hi John and Heidi,
PLEASE REPLY
Talking a about Polka dancing!!!! Nelson and I where making up alllll kind of various scenes with you polka dancing and laughing our XXXSS off!! Sorry John, but YOU ARE TRULY THE BEST!!
I want to e-mail you a video of Nelson and I. How do I do this?
Paula and Nelson Baker
P.S. SOOOO Glad to hear about Alan, that’s waht prayers and faith have in common.
Hello John and Heidi!!!!
Enjoyed the Blog as always, the pictures of backstage are great, I always love the shows and can’t help wonder if the greater talent is not the dancing but the ability to change clothes so fast….
I have not posted earlier this week but I was meaning to ask if Wee Jimmy is not on the Glory where is he going to be….. Just checking, and in keeping with budget we are now booked on the Inspiration for Dec 1st and any info would be great….. and we regret no booking the 2nd bloggers cruise but we have to keep it in budget and that means for us Florida ports and preferably the ones less than 2 hrs away….. Vacationing with a family has its price maybe when our now teens are adults….. Oh well maybe the next? It was so close when it was the Inspiration on the list….. :p ok that is my rambling for now too

Having never been on a cruise ship that appears as if a flying saucer from crash landed and embedded itself on the superstructure of the vessel, I can only extrapolate data from what is available…..
even better than RCCL ……
I do have relatives who have sailed on such a cruise line but their notion of fun is vastly different from mine……
Let me rephrase that…..
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ…………..
ok I am awake now……
In the words of Queen …….from Carnival’s very cool advertising campaign …
Oooh, you make me live……
even better than RCCL ……
Hello Hello,
Its been a while since we have posted, but not a day goes by that you don’t fill our house with laughter!! Glad you are back “home” on the Freedom. Happy Valentines to you and the mrs.
Until next time
Blanche & Dave
Hello John & Heidi,
I read your blog thingy every day, and it is often one of the highlights of my day. My husband and I have been on several CCL cruises, but we’ve never been lucky enough to have you as our CD. I was hoping that you would be the CD on the Freedom when we go on the Oct 1st sailing, but it looks like you are moving over to the Splendor. Then I thought, it’s OK, we’ll have him as the CD on the Blogger’s cruise. Oh please, please, please reconsider! As you know, one can’t book a cruise to sail with a particular CD, because that information is almost impossible to come by very far in advance. And as Kuki said, with so many people on the ship, it’s not like we’d all get very much face time with you anyway. All I was hoping for was a chance to shake your hand and tell you how much I enjoy your blog thingy in person. Maybe get a picture. But not to get to see the “bedtime story” in person! Sigh.
Now a question: Do you know if CCL is planning to redo their past guest program at all? Perhaps make it more like Princess’? Unless I can squeeze in one more 4 day quicky out of NYC this summer, the 2009 Blogger’s cruise will be our 9th. So close!
Another question: Are they ever going to do a “real” Bermuda cruise out of NYC? (By real I mean go to Bermuda as the only destination and dock there for 3 nights. As of this moment, the only choice this year is the Norwegian Dawn. Period. Every other cruise line is going a one day call, if any. My fantasy is for CCL or Princess to send the smallest ship in the fleet there. Especially if it’s small enough to squeeze in the St. George harbor.
Thanks again for your thingy. We all love it. I guess you really are a “rock star”, now. How does it feel?
Hi John/Heidi:
Great hearing from you today.
I’d love to see a picture of the 2 CCL ships with the QM2 coming into port. Pretty exciting.
Hearing your complaints about St. Thomas brings back so many memories since I have experienced one of those issues EVERY single time that I have been there (approx. 12 times now). It gets very frustrating. Its quite possibly my favorite island, but a lot has changed and these people take away from the whole experience.
Thanks again and chat with you soon!
David
John do you have a schedule of which ships you will be on?
To John Friedman,
There are plenty of things to do in St. Thomas if you don’t want to shop or go to the beach. There are tours all over the island, to see from high vantage points, Drake’s Seat, Mountaintop, others I don’t remember the names of. It’s really a very pretty island. There’s also Coral World and Atlantis submarine excursions. Or how about a leisurely lunch in town – there are great restaurants with great views. OK, now I sound like a travel agent – but I love St. Thomas.
Tortola also has some pretty scenery – not as much, but high mountains. St. Maarten would give you the experience of a French island on one side and a Dutch island on the other.
I haven’t been to the Dominican Republic or some of the other islands, but there’s a lot of history there. Or how about a local zoo?
OK, I’ll stop.
Goodnight all,
Carol
I was so excited to hear the Triumph is eventually going to get a big screen theater also. We cruise on her at the end of August, and I wondered if you could possibly find out when her screen is due to be put in. I will be thrilled if it’s in time for our cruise. Thanks and all the best to you and Heidi in your “stick” endeavours.

Hi John — I wanted to pass along some comments, having just returned from the 2/9 sailing of the Freedom. We had such a wonderful time and it was actually our second sailing with you. You were the cruise director on our last Carnival cruise – the Western Caribbean on the Triumph in November 0f 2000. I think it was that cruise and not an earlier one. Thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. A similar thing with Donna and Larry was done with another couple – I think from the Chicago area but I may be mistaken – makes for so much fun and they are such good sports about it. As well as Dick and Anita Little. Such fun. And great sports. How do you follow that?
Nothing negative at all about the cruise with possibly one exception. I’m not too much of a fish eater and about the only choices on Friday that I’d care for were the salmon. While I like salmon, twice in a day is a bit much. Being Catholic, meat choices on the menu were out. It might be nice to have more choices during Lent for Catholics like myself.
Our daughter passed away suddenly in January 2005 and I had a mini meltdown during the lifeboat muster thinking of our first cruise in 1993 when we gave her a cruise for a college graduation present and we took one for our 25th wedding anniversary at the same time. We’ve taken other cruises since that one but none since she’d passed away. Memories flooded back as I recalled 15 years ago passing her ship going to the Western Caribbean and ours going to the Eastern. Hooting, hollering, waving. I’m sure people thought I was insane, standing there in the life jacket sobbing… And of course a topic of discussion among people you spend a casual meal with is ‘do you have any children?’ – haven’t quite figured out a painless way to respond to that. I really hadn’t anticipated that before. I wonder why not? Unavoidable to be sure. But we had such a wonderful time and I hope to talk my husband into the northern Europe cruise on the newest ship but not totally sure when that may be. We’ll be building a home in Maine at some time this year and there’s so much to do in order to accomplish that. But it sounds like an ideal cruise and would love to do that.
Keep up the entertaining, both on Carnival ships and off. You’re amazing. Thanks very much for making our cruise enjoyable.
Pat and Joe Dempsey
I had my first cruise on the last and first bloggers cruise. It was honestly the best vacation I have ever had and we look forward to our next one. Until that time I plan to keep current on this blog! The dressing room is just as I remember it from Legends in January. Keep up the great work and we look forward to sailing with you again!
As a side note, how does one go about being employed by the cruise line? Is it a start at entry level and then put in for what you really want to do? I loved Mouna (sp) Karoake hostess on Freedom, and just being there made me interested in learning more about becoming a part of the Carnival Family as one because I love to travel and love to Karoake. May only turn out to be a passing fancy, but hey, everyone can dream!
Deanna
look forward to it John…ive heard good things likewise!
