The Apology of the Seas

February 28, 2008 -

John Heald

I upset someone yesterday…………..well actually I probably upset many people yesterday but I only know for sure about one. I received a comment from someone who read the blog and was very upset…………..here is what they had to say.

I like reading your blogs, but I have to take offense to the comments about Royal’s ships. Yes I’m a loyal customer to them, but wouldn’t have a problem trying new things; however with the comments I’m for sure not going to try Carnival. I use the same rule of thumb as if I was buying something for my business that if a supplier is going to talk trash about another company I will not purchase from them. Say good-bye to a potential guest.

Hold on…………stop typing……………put down the mouse and step away from the keyboard……………….that’s right………….now…..breathe…….nice and slow…………..I am talking to you by the way………..that’s right ……… you ………. the blogger who is about to leap to my defense and pour scorn upon this poor chap………………before you do let me try and persuade you to re think…………….here’s why.

Let’s start with an apology. I would never, ever, purposely write a blog with the purpose to upset or belittle anyone………..except the French. Seriously, I send my sincerest apologies to the RCI fan whose name I have left out on purpose and who I apologize to publicly now.

I could defend myself by saying it’s just a bit of fun. I could remind you sir that recently a RCI Cruise Director called Carnival the “K Mart Of The Seas” ………. and there has been much much worse said about us at very high levels and if you have principles as strong as yours seem to be I though you should know this…………..but that is not the point. The point is that I upset you sir by my comments and that therefore deserves an apology.

Will I stop having fun about this?………..No………….probably not……………I have no doubt that RCI folks won’t either………..it’s the nature of the beast.

So, please forgive me and maybe one day you will reconsider coming on a Carnival cruise if for no other reason than I can shake your hand and apologize to you in person.

I know there are some people at RCI reading this blog and I send my best to all of them. I have some very good friends there, one who I have not seen for some time and every time I see a Judith Leiber bag I will think of her………….I expect she misses us as much as we miss her.

So, let’s move on and please don’t feel obligated to defend this situation……… I am not going to change…………but I hate the fact that I upset this person and may have lost Carnival a guest.

I did win one battle…………well………………sort of. Remember the lady who had very strong feelings because of the lack of African American entertainment staff onboard………….well………….I met with her this morning and I got her to agree that Marcus Anthony was fantastic and that she really enjoyed the show. She then gave me a five-minute lecture about racial equality and at the end of it I asked her a direct question………………..this is how it went.

JOHN………………On Monday you called me a racist which really hurt me. Do you really truly believe this?

GUEST……………I don’t think that you are no but clearly Carnival has issues with hiring African American people. You need to balance the books more ……………………..at this point she started talking about something called …………..something action…….a law in California where she is from.

JOHN…………..Madam, we can only hire the people who apply and when you look around the ship don’t you see how many different races and nationalities are represented?

GUEST…………..Yes but have a look at how many African Americans are onboard and you have very little entertainment for us

Well, at this point I felt we were going to go round in circles so I said.

JOHN………….Well madam, spread the word…………we want to hire talented African Americans………dancers, singers, comedians, staff.

On that note I reminded her that tomorrow night we have Marvin Bell an African American comedian performing ………this seemed to please her ……………. and before she left our meeting…………….she shook my hand.

I have read all your comments of support and once again I thank you all so very much for thinking of me. It was a difficult situation and I am still mad at myself for letting it get to me.

I left that meeting feeling much better than the last time we had met and although I may not have won her around completely at least she seemed to have realized that neither myself or Carnival are racist in any way, shape or form……………….I am however a Frenchist.

The guests were blessed with a perfect day of beautiful sunshine today. It was just one of those days with nothing but sun, no wind and there will be many red people returning to the ship today I am sure.

Heidi went shopping this morning to buy a new pair of something called Crocs. These are apparently shoes and are allegedly the most comfortable shoes in the world. She wanted me to go with her but I declined the invitation to walk around shops in 90 degrees of heat. So, off she went and returned just now with a pair of these Croc thingies………….they have huge holes in them…….and they cost $45………………$45 for unfinished shoes! I started to mention this but the look on her face told me that she was hot, tired and any further remarks would result in a pink Croc thingy visiting my bottom.

So, let’s instead slap on a few random photos

Time for some Q and A. You know, I cannot remember a time when the blog thingy had so many comments which is just fantastic. The community sense is getting bigger all the time with people completely ignoring me and just talking amongst themselves which is just what I always dreamed this blog would become. The downside is of course that this means I cannot reply to every comment………..anyway…………..here are today’s selections……………….here we go.

KATHY B………………thanks for the report on your Carnival Valor cruise and it sounds like your Cozumel taxi ride was fun. I will as requested pass your remarks to Chris and Lauren and the trivia contest sounds fantastic…………I shall have to steal that idea. I am sure your son will cherish his medal for years to come and maybe I will be lucky enough to cruise with you all very soon. Cheers.

BILL – ZYDECOCRUISER……………I am completing the final stages of my schedule for the rest of the year Bill and I see you asked about the Carnival Splendor in South America. I have the bloggers cruise in February and therefore at this stage it looks unlikely that I will be able to be the CD for the first leg of this very special cruise. I know many people want to know who the CD will be and at this point we do not know for certain as soon as possible. Thanks Bill and I really look forward to the day when we sail together.

BELLE907…………….The July 13 cruise will indeed be very special, Belle, and I look forward to meeting you in person. I have decided that as so many Bloggers are cruising on the inaugural that we will have a special cocktail party to celebrate…….does that sound good?

PAULMEDIK……………I have asked for some photos of the balconies as you requested Paul and they should be with me soon. I know both styles of cabin well and if it were me I would go for the Cat 11 wrap aft cabin. For me, these are the best cabins and have the biggest balconies with the most amazing views……………you can’t beat it. A Q and A with a PVP is a good idea and when I do this then indeed I will chat with Lynn as you recommended. I am glad you are enjoying the blog and I will post the photos ASAP. Cheers.

MORT13ERS……………A huge sense of disappointment washed over me at the end of your fantastic posting. I am so glad that you and the family canceled your RCI cruise and have instead booked the Carnival Freedom after many years away from the “Fun Ship” experience. Your memories of Eddie Capone and the Male Nightgown contest are ones I share with you mate and I have to say you will be astounded at the changes we have made onboard since you left us. The fun is here waiting for you and if you can remind me a few days before you sail I would appreciate it very much. Welcome home and my disappointment is that I will not be here to share in your family vacation with you……………maybe next time. My best to you all.

VIKKI AND MAT TILL…………….You could never be nobodies and your valued support of Carnival and of this blog means everything to me. What cruises have you booked this year………..please let me know when you are sailing. Heidi and I send our best to you both and please except my apologies for not replying before.

CASSANDRA…………You asked about a young man who sang in the Talent Show when you were onboard. His name was Adam Mitchell and he has since applied for a position with Carnival. He was very popular and we all loved his performance and hopefully things will work out for him and he will join us very soon……………he was born to sing. Thanks Cassandra and all the best.

KEVIN THE ASTON MAN…………..Just wanted to say thanks again for the huge basket of goodies mate……….hope to see you soon.

ELVIRA AND ALEXANDER…………..I remember your wedding day very well and what a beautiful bride you were. I am so happy that you came all the way from Russia for your special day and it was an honour to share it with you. Sbasiba.

SHIRLEY CALES………………Shirley, you asked me about my part in the Olsen Twins movie shot onboard the Carnival Sensation. It was a truly memorable experience and in my humble opinion my role should have won me an Oscar. I modeled myself on Sean Connery, Jude Law and George Hamilton. The movie is available still if you have nothing better to watch and you can get it at all the usual places. It is called. The Olsen Twins: a Sensational Mystery ……………. unfortunately there is no photo of me on the cover. Let me know what you think. Cheers.

LINDA AND GEORGE…………….You asked about the naming ceremony and I know there are lots of comments and questions about this. The proposed date is July 10 in Dover and not in Italy for sure. I hope this helps your planning and we both look forward to seeing you onboard once again.

JPUBLIC………………It’s funny that you should mention the finale of the bedtime story. Like most comedy it based on real life experiences and this is no different with the ending based on my friends Alan and Paul skipping off into Hockley Woods together. Thanks for the fun posting and I look forward to your next one very much.

TERRI AND LARRY…………….Just wanted to make sure you saw my answer to your question in yesterday’s blog. Cheers.

DEANNA…………..Just in case you missed it above Adam has applied and we are trying to help him realize his dream to perform. I am so glad you like so many others enjoyed his talent show performance. Thanks for writing and all the best.

MELODY…………..I have not decided on if I will be sailing on the cruise after the Bloggers cruise as well. I have to see where my schedule takes me. It certainly would be great to do so if for no other reason than to relax a bit afterwards………….let’s see what happens. Thanks Melody and I must say Heidi just told me she loves your name.

PRINCESS ELAINE……………..You asked if there was anything I won’t share with you…………..well………..that depends if Heidi is watching what I type however……………at this stage of the blogs history…………..nope.

Cheers Princess and our best to you and the Royal Family.

BIG MIKE……………….I may need your help mate…………she is a big lass!

JOHN AND CINDY……………As always, I hate having to reply to these e-mails when I have to tell you that no I will not be the Cruise Director on the Carnival Freedom for your May 10 cruise. However……………..I will be on the ship as I am sailing to help Todd with the first cruise. This means I will get to see you and you can buy me a Diet Coke……….or visa versa. I hope that’s a little good news with the bad and regardless I promise you a brilliant experience. See you soon.

LINDA HERNACKI AND MANY OTHERS……………..Who have been asking about my cold? Well, the good news is my nose is clear of all liquids and boogers some of which were the size of Brussels sprouts…………..but not as tasty.

However, the cold is now on my chest and I have an annoying tight feeling and a cough which when you are doing shows can be so off putting. Anyway, it seems that I am sharing my ailment with many of you out there and some on board as well. Thank you all for your continuing concern.

SUSAN B…………………Please send my best to Mum.

CANUCK CRUISER…………..Hello B and D how are you? Thanks for all your kind words of support, they are most welcome. You asked who your cruise director will be on the Carnival Fascination. His name is Trevor Block and he has been with us for 10 years and is a firm favorite with many guests. I wish you much luck with your new business venture mate and thanks for saying hello you all the folks in the office and my mate Alan. Cheers.

NANNI……………Mucho bearos in el forresto. Hugos.

DEBORAH ROSATO…………..Hello Debs……….can I call you Debs? I am sorry to say that during the New Year cruise I will be with the family at home. This time of year is so important for me and over the holiday season I always try to be with Mum and Dad and with Heidi’s family as well. I am sure that soon our paths will cross though and they will be happy day Debs………can I call you Debs?

JOHN FRIEDMAN…………..thanks mate

JOHN LlANO……………..Oh John………what a great idea………..a special bar where every night before dinner our Platinum Members meet for a drink and a chat. I know this is done on many lines and I think it’s wonderful. I have never actually suggested this before and not that I carry any weight ……..well………I mean within the company………not personally of course because ……. Well ………I do…………..anyway, let me suggest this to Lynn Torrent our new and shiny Senior Vice President and let’s see what she has to say…………..I think it’s a great idea. See you on Saturday and please leave me a note at the Information Desk when you are onboard. Cheers.

LAMBKNUCKLES…………..I know you didn’t actually ask a question but I had to write…………I am sorry to tell you I think I ate your cousin tonight ……….I had a lamb shank for dinner…………….don’t hate me.

LAYNE MORRIS…………..I am so glad you enjoyed the bedtime story. Over the years it has become a “signature dish” …….sorry…….I have been watching Jamie Olivier again…………..anyway……….we do sell the DVDs at the end of the cruise but unfortunately we do not keep master copies past two weeks. I have heard there are a few excerpts of various skits of mine on Boobtube but I have not seen them myself. Let me know if you find any mate. Thanks for writing and I am glad you enjoyed the show.

MARK CHAMBLISS…………..I am sure I will see you onboard mate. If you can stop by the Information desk and let them know to tell me you are here. I know you are also waiting anxiously for the Bloggers pre cruise info and I hope to have more news on this very soon. Have fun at Cruise 360 and I wish I could be there with you all.

JOAN CARLOW……………Thank you for your wonderful review of your Carnival Freedom European adventure. I remember our conversation well about New Zealand and it’s a place I would love to visit again someday with Heidi. Anyway, you asked about a recommendation for the Eastern Caribbean and a ship that is similar to the Carnival Freedom. Well, you have lots of choices but I want to recommend the Carnival Valor or the Carnival Liberty. Both are the same class as Carnival Freedom and both have fantastic Eastern itineraries. Have a look at www.carnival.com and click on each ship to read all about it. Then, let me know if you have any follow up questions and I will be happy to answer them for you. Regardless of what ship you choose you will be assured of a fantastic time. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

DEANNA…………Our laundry room does have an iron as they are not allowed in the cabins for obvious safety reasons. How you use an iron though is something I am afraid you will have to go to other people for advice on. Cheers.

OK, time to stop as it’s nearly talent show time.

I just wanted to say that I realize that I don’t always reply to every comment. If time allows me to I will but recently it has not. I have tried not to show any favoritism to anyone regardless of whom they are and please remember if you mark your posting at the top with PLEASE REPLY you are guaranteed a response for sure. Please keep posting. The comments breath new life into me and your help and support is rejuvenating during the difficult times………..thanks to you all………….OH……….PLEASE REPLY TO THIS :)

Julie Gantt suggested that Heidi be Captain……………….good grief…………..no way………..I love my wife more than any Aston Martin, I care for her more than any jelly bean …………but Heidi as Captain……………..no way………..here is why

Based on her driving abilities it would take her an hour to park the ship ………….there could be no ship on either side of her and………..I would have to stand at the stern and wave her in.

OK, its time for me to go do a show. I was in a good mood until about five minutes ago when I received an e-mail from our Miami office ………………. Marvin Bell our comedian missed his flight and therefore will not be joining us today in St. Martin……….I can only imagine what my African American friend will say about this……………………….bugger.

Off to the talent show and I will write more when I get back.

Here I am back again. Normally I would tell you about the talent show and it was a really great one with some very special people taking part. I would normally tell you about the bedtime story which was very funny this evening……………but I won’t………it does not matter.

During the show the Captain contacted me to say that we were diverting to St. Thomas where a U.S. Coast Guard boat would meet us to take a guest ashore who was “very, very ill” and needed immediate and urgent attention in a shore side hospital. I went to the bridge after the show to assist in the operation and was saddened to see that I knew the wife of this poor gentleman.

I can’t tell you the guest’s name………………I can’t tell you what his medical condition is ……………I can tell you that his wife was in the Welcome Aboard show with me. They have been married 51 years and were a lot of fun. The Captain and I had our photos taken with them on Elegant night and they were so happy and having so much fun……………..four days later…………I am watching him taken off the ship on a stretcher and onto a boat.

Nothing matters………………..not a joke about a ship’s name…………..the colour of someone’s skin…………nothing…………..it’s about life……..living, enjoying and cherishing………………………… every single moment.

Goodnight

Your friends

John and Heidi

    John,
Okay…..the last part of the blog really “hit the nail on the head”. This is what I have been talking about all along. As I sat here and read the blog I realized…..this is exactly the reason every summer we make such a big deal over a “family vacation”. You just never know what is in store for you down the road. How sad. I hope the gentleman does okay and has a speedy recovery. My thoughts also go out to his wife. How truly sad. I just can not imagine what she is going through.
You said it all when you said we need to cherish every moment. That is so true. There is nothing left to say except Take the time to cherish those who are dear to you. Do not take it for granted that they know how you feel about them. Cherish those times together. Every single moment counts!

John, as I read down todays post I thought of many funny things to say but when I got to the end I relized all I would say was this.

My prayers go out to the the man taken off the ship and his wife.

    John,

As you closed your blog I started to pray for one of our family who I’ve never met. I hope that he receives the best of care and will, once again, sail with you on board a Carnival vessel.

Please pass along my best wishes, if you can.

Not to get all wrapped around an axle about the XXXXXX of the Seas thing but it seems as though folks would treat them better if 1) they had a better sense of humor and 2) they avoided making publicly disparaging comments about Carnival. Enough of that.

Are there any new pictures of the Splendor sneaking out anywhere?? I’d love to see how Carnival’s newest is coming along.

Keep the ‘random’ pictures coming. They’re great.

Pass along my thanks to Heidi, Roberto and Stephanie for all they do!

    Regards,

    GregB

    John,
I went back to read your responses. Wow! A bloggers party on the inagural cruise……Wow!
That really sounds like a winner to me!

    Belle,
I saw John’s response to you about the inagural cruise. My family will also be on there. We are really looking forward to it. I think the bloggers party sounds like a lot of fun. We will have an opportunity to meet on the ship. Meanwhile….happy blogging!

Regarding the African-American entertainer issue, we were on the Elation last spring and there was a very good Reggae style band. At one of their breaks, I happened to be walking by the leader and asked where they were from. He said Brooklyn. Last I heard, that was part of the United States.

  8. Ruth Jamison says:

One more time…….I see that the naming ceremony will be in Dover on July 10. I am wondering if perhaps my family would be up to coming over that far ahead and attending the naming. Then we would have some time to sightsee in London. Don’t know….but it’s a thought. Think I will mention it to my husband.

    John the Bean Man,
Once again you are welcome and please tell Heidi how sorry I am that I did that to her. You Know a large box of sugar free beans and other items. Glad to hear you have miss affirmative action won over a bit. And my personal favorite is Marinade of the Seas. Ok to the guest who is ill I hope you are getting the care that is needed and will recover soon. Best to everyone.

    John,
Thank you for replying to my comment! I hope to see Adam performing on the ship one day!

  11. What about dry cleaning facilities on the Splendor?

I think with 3+ weeks on a cruise ship I can almost guarantee I drop a morsel of food now and then.

I suppose I could try to pick up a washable chartreuse leisure suit on Ebay.

  12. kiciaski says:

    Please reply.

    Hello John,

I have a question and I’ll bet you know the answer. On the Splendor cruise we are going to debark in Amsterdam and stay there for 6 days. Do we have to let anyone know, other than the Purser’s desk, that we are not coming back on? We plan on staying on board until after lunch and then taking our luggage off and going to — somewhere since we don’t have a reservation yet. I hope this is OK because our airfare home is from Amsterdam.

Glad you’re feeling better and hope your chest cold gets better too.

When is Heidi going to write a blog?

    Linda

    Hey John
We have sailed on RCCL and they have a open center of the ship. It’s about 5 floors high,
it’s real neat & is called their Royal Promenade.
Carnival should try that in their new ships. It has shops, and a cafe that serves all kinds of goodies plus they have a parade almost every night. It was real nice but, we still love CARNIVAL the best.
Once on RCCL was fine….food on RCCL was ok,
but Carnival is great. Even our neighbors, that swear by RC, admitted that Carnival had the best food & dining menu they had ever experienced.
so we pick up two new carnival lovers,,,
so that will take care of that lady &%$#@
    who likes rccl whateveroftheseas

  15. Myra Bushnell says:

    John,

I think at this point in your “cold” you may need more than chicken soup. When the stuff (all five pounds of gelatinous green goo) leaves the head and makes itself at home in the chest it is usually a good idea to call in the heavy artillary…i.e., ANTIBIOTICS. Yes, yes I know, the “intelligence of today” is less is better when it comes to these wonder drugs. But, if you’re like me, “it’s” no longer just a cold at this point; rather, you now have a bacterial infection which REQUIRES the big “A.” You could end up with much worse if you don’t get rid of it! (I know, I’m not a doctor. But then I’m not charging you for my diagnosis. Just making a concerned observation.)

Your diplomatic skills never fail to amaze. How you manage to apologize while politely, and with a smile, standing your ground is a joy to read about. This is, of course, in reference to your “… of the Seas” remarks and the ethnicity situation. Which reminds me, maybe you could have Marvin Bell give your “friend” a call to personally inform her that he “missed the boat”!

What a sad way to end the blog and your evening. I sincerely join Ruth, and I’m sure, all the other bloggers in wishing a good outcome for the stricken gentleman and his wife. You know they are in our prayers.

Thanks for the cheer and wisdom you bring to all our lives,

    Myra

  16. Linda (The Mouse) says:

    Hi John,

I definitely have sympathy for your regarding your cold; I have been battling one for over a week. I actually went home sick on Monday and called in on Tuesday…it was only the second time in 19 yrs at my job that I have called in sick. I have 4 prescriptions that I am currently taking…definitely no picnic. I had a huge headache for days and still have problems with both ears.

Please advise what address we are to currently use for you and Heidi as you recently listed a PO box in your blog, yet
there is still a “Fan Mail” section on the blog saying to send it to c/o Chris Prideaux…the “Easter Mouse” would like to send something to both of you!!

You asked when I would be sailing on the Inspiration so that you would get the Carnival Freedom scrapbook to me…I sail on 4/17 out of Tampa; I do not have my cabin number handy at the moment, but will get it to you shortly. Please bill my sign and sail card for it and if at all possible if you could send along the embellishment pages I will be forever grateful; I believe that you had a picture of both items on your blog months ago.

Regards to Heidi; I have yet to try Crocs myself, but apparently they are a big hit.

Take care of that cold and feel better soon.

    Linda

  17. John

I read your blog daily and try not to miss anything, but apparently I did. Is there going to be a bloggers party on the July 13th sailing of Splendor and if so how do I get involved with that.

You are the one of the highlights of my day reading your blog.

Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing you July 13th.

    Sharon Dover

  18. Mark says:

    John,
How sad….Life is indeed a precious gift and our time on this earth is relativity short. This is precisely why I wanted to take my parents on their first cruise ….A fun experience and a time to share with them. As they advance in age, I want to spend as much quality time as my hectic life allows. We should all enjoy the moments we are granted.

….So no flippant or smart-alec comments today about a competitor’s ships (although the urge is definitely there….)

Speaking of Heidi’s driving skills, what you have described is rather like the driving talent of my mum. :)

I remember when I was much younger watching in horror as the mirror of the Suburban being sheared off when she was pulling into the garage or when she backed the big beast out into a car port canopy support pole creating her very own bas relief metal sculpture of the door…..dad was not happy. I cannot envision her steering a ship either.

    John,

I booked the cat 11 on Legend for April 12 2009. Thank you for the advice.

    Please reply……
    Hi John,
Have the powers that be ever thought about more itineraries out of NYC? How about to Florida….St. Augustine, Port Canaveral (Orlando) and Miami? And why not year round, like other lines do? I am a die hard Carnival fan but sometimes it’s hard to get out of NY to cruise. More options for us Northerners would be terrific. See you on the Bloggers cruise!

    Hi John,

My hubby and I are considering cruising on the Splendor for the July 2nd sailing. Will you be aboard and the CD for this sailing? I do hope you will be. that will seal the deal for me. :-)

    Thanks,
    Sallie

    PLEASE REPLY

My son will be getting married on May 3 and he and his new wife will be taking a cruise on their honeymoon on the Carnival Victory the very next day. He told me one of the ports he’s going to is Costa Maya. Is that possible because of the dock or has the dock been fixed? Tell Heidi to becareful with her crocs. My wife said that they are bad for your feet especially for the toes. I always thought they were useless but many people seem to like wearing them but unfortunately after awhile there are problems with them. On Saturday, I go see my travel agent to sign up for another cruise on the Freedom. I’m looking forward to another cruise with Carnival. Ciao.

  23. CAROLYN AND DON says:

John, Our prayers go out for the gentleman that became ill on your cruise. Please let us know how he does.
On our cruise aboard the Liberty last Nov we were about 2 hours from Jamaica, headed back to the states, when we did a U-turn and returned to Jamaica because a woman had taken ill. We know for the ship to take such drastic measures to get someone back to medical facilities it must be something of dire need.
Again prayers are going up for the gentleman.

  24. It’s sad when people get too fanatical about issues.

I bet enough people at RC take the mickey out of the Carnival funnel… and I have to laugh at the one on the car park in front of your Miami HQ… but it’s as Carnival as Mickey’s ears are Disney.

I’m amazed that anyone can accuse a cruise line of racism… there are so many nationalities and cultures working together in harmony on board that it is almost unbelievable. Well done, though, persevering and “turning around” that guest. I would just have given up… it’s a tribute to your dedication and skill that you persevered and persevered again.

What a shame that anyone has their holiday cut short by illness, and I hope that a quick and full recovery is the final outcome.

However, we cannot see our fate.

Years ago I worked on a holiday camp and remember clearly an “old dear” taking part in absolutely everything, even the donkey rides!

Sadly, she passed away the day she returned home, but I remember the letter from her daughter thanking us all for making her mother’s last week so wonderful.

There’s a time for everything, and death is no different to anything else. It waits for us all, and none of us can know when. All we can do is try to live each day to the full, leave no good action undone, and leave no good word unsaid. If those we love know how much we love them and how much we have enjoyed our life with them, then we can pass on from this transitory life satisfied that we have lived it well.

The young lady you blogged about a few days ago is a case in point… her father’s tribute shows that she gave and recieved so much pleasure in her tragically short life … her life was not wasted.

    Good Afternoon John,

My prayers and thoughts are with “Mr and Mrs 51 years”. I hope that he will be back in good health soon.
As for the comments about “that other” cruise line let it roll off your back like water off a duck. Most people don’t seem to realize that Carnival and “them” target the same demographic! At least they did several years ago. Oh well, my philosophy is “what goes around comes around..someday….

    You take care

I was not able to locate the “Sensational Mystery”

Could they have re-named it? There was one called “The Case of the Mystery Cruise” that was made in 1995 and involved the father of the Olsen Twins having his computer stolen. I’ll be on Freedom in two weeks and two days, and I would love to see your performance with the twins before we meet.

My thoughts and prayers are with the couple who had to leave the ship.

I hope the guest in St. Thomas is doing better.
I know it hurts when it hits close to home and you know them. My thoughts are with them.
Good luck trying to satisfy the lady and the entertainment. I’m sure you (and CCL) will be to blame for him missing his flight.
    Nice blog today.
Hope you’re doing better from your cold!

    Hi John,

    Please Reply.

This is my first time to your Blog and it’s fabulous! I imagine I’ll be making a visit each day moving forward. My Husband and some friends will be on the Splendor sailing Aug 6th. We are all looking forward to it!

My question is – our cabin is 9205. And where it’s situated, will we have another window other than the Balcony? (I’m not sure if this is something you would know, but I thought I’d ask)

We’ve been told you’ll be our CD and we’re very excited. Thanks John!

John, when you were in St. Thomas yesterday, did you also see the Celebrity Millenium? My mom and sister are cruising on that ship this week (no, I wasn’t invited but that’s another story LOL) and you mentioned other Carnival ship(s) but not Celebrity. Thanks so much.

Hope the man that was taken off the ship ill will be allright.

    Thanks John,

    John,
thank you in advance for setting up our Cruise Critic M&M for April 27 on the Freedom Transatlantic.. I’m waiting to hear from Roberto on the confirmation so we can announce it to our over 100 people on our CC Roll Call board for the crossing.. I find it very strange that the person in charge of the events planning for Freedom has never heard of you.. her comment was “we have over 3,000 employees and I don’t know any names”…. ok.. why is she working in an important position where she should at least know key people on the ship she is in charge of event planning for.. ????.. soo I appreciate you scheduling our M&M.. have a great day and evening!!

    Hi John, “Debs” here

My prayers go out to the guest who became ill – very sad.

    Questions:

    1. How is Allen doing? He is still in my prayers and I hope he is doing well.

    2. Need Response – On the 4/27/08 sailing of Valor – we want to know if the Chocolate Melting Cake is on the menu. – when we sailed with you Oct 16 – we ate that every night for desert :-) yummm

    3. In 2009 the Splendor goes to S. America, in 2010 will the Splendor again sail Northern Europe?

    4. Has Carnival made any decision about sailing out of Baltimore, again – a 10 day cruise out of Baltimore would be lovely

As always, my best to you and Heidi,

    Hi John & Heidi,

I agree with Big Ed – no wise cracks after reading the end of your blog thingy. My thoughts are with this couple and their family and I hope all will be well.

Usually if I have a bad cold that develops into a cough, it lasts forever. I can’t sleep, I need 3 pillows and I have to lay on my back, which I don’t like. And I hate cough medicine – nothing ever works. I did find cough suppressant strips to use during the day, but nothing helps at night. I can share your misery.

    Feel good,

July is getting closer and closer! Happy blogging!

John, Our heart goes out to the couple of 51 years who had to leave the ship for a land based hospital. It makes us even happier that we take the family on a cruise every spring when college graduation is over. We’ve been together 51 years too and want to enjoy life and family as much as we can.
On a lighter note – my granddaughter had a question she thought you or someone who reads this could answer. On the cave tubing in Belize so you float the entire way or do you have to paddle? She is not into outdoor activites and her fiancee has an image of dragging us all through the water. He says he’ll start working to get in shape if necessary!
    Have a good day. Jeri

  36. John I LOVE K-Mart!!!!!! I also love Carnival.
We are going on Princess out of Tahiti in April, our first on anything other then Carnival. Hope it goes ok. After 16 cruises on one cruise line who knows.

    John,
You are right, every moment has to be cherished, because our life is a gift. My husband and I have been married for 34 years and never took a real vacation together, just the 2 of us, until 5 or 6 years ago when we took a cruise. Now, eleven cruises later, we have so many wonderful memories that we wouldn’t trade for anything. One special one was when we were snorkeling in Jamaica. My husband reached out and took my hand under the water and we snorkeled over this breath-taking reef with me thinking-”he still loves me!” So even though we continue to save hard for retirement, the money we spend on our vacations is not wasted. Anything could happen, anytime, but we have a reservoir of incredible memories to draw on. And hopefully more to come.
    God Bless.

    Hi John and Heidi

My heart goes out to the very ill passenger and his wife. Hopefully he will get the care he needs and feel better. Thank you for sharing this with us and reminding us to appreciate each day.

My hope is to cruise at least 365 days so I can have spent at least 1 year of my life on a cruise. I reached 101 days on my last cruise on the Legend. Looking forward to fulfilling my dream with many more Carnival cruises. Love reading the blog and really enjoy the behind the scenes photos.

Not sure if you have acess to past post or how you keep up with who is who……I am the one who said you write like you talk. Having cruised with you a few times, there are times I am reading and I could almost hear you say it. Thank you for the laughter each day I look forward it.
    Today for instance…
“Based on her driving abilities it would take her an hour to park the ship ………….there could be no ship on either side of her and………..I would have to stand at the stern and wave her in.”

The visual of this cracked me up!LOL!!!! Tell Heidi to not feel bad my husband would say the same thing about me.

I cannot remember if I posted this before or not. I wanted to thank you for the easy acess to the Supper Club reservations. I used this for the Legend cruise and everything went very smoothly. Was a wonderful evening and love the ease of booking. Daughter is getting married on a Carnival cruise in Sept. Can you use this system to book for a large group?
Hope you both have a nice evening!

Good evening Mr. Heald. I have a question to ask you that you might help me with. On May 3rd my son is getting married and the very next day he and his new wife are taking a cruise on their honeymoon on the Carnival Victory. I asked him where he was going on his honeymoon and he said their first port was Costa Maya. It was unable to go there due to the results of the hurricane. Did they fix the area and the dock? Also my wife said that docs were not the best for the feet and toes. It many people were buying them and then found out that they were not the best. I always thought that shoes with holes in them were not the right shoes to buy especially with their costs. Ciao for now my friend.

    Hi John,

Loved the March 07 European cruise on the Freedom so much we are coming back for more this year – 7/13 Splendor. One complaint though – there has to be a better way of getting us on the excursions. Can’t boarding passes along w/ time and location of meeting / buses be distributed via the stewards or at multiple locations the night before? Having everyone meet at the same time and place as the clock ticks away on our time in port to wait for your turn to come up does not make any sense. I recall the day we were in Istanbul – what a zoo!

  51. Mark says:

Here goes my additional 2 cents for the poor chap who is incensed over your humour and some of our ongoing banter and perhaps some of our opinions of RCI.

It obviously pushed him/her over the edge….not of ship of course…but if one were to climb too high on certain rock walls they would really be up the shaft….ok enough…

Like factions in nearly every aspect of human existence from football to politics from soft drinks to cruise lines….

Patriots vs Giants fans…Democrat vs Republican (or Labour vs Conservative Party in John’s case)….Coke vs Pepsi….RCCL vs Carnival….

People are often strongly opinionated and therefore are quite frequently fiercely loyal to their favourites. He/she said it in the comment ….they are loyal to the other line…..and that is fine…..peachy…ducky….fantastic….to each their own….

Despite the fact we have our differences of opinion…… we are cruise seafaring aficionados (dunno why but I love that word) regardless of which line we prefer. There will always be passenger loyalty crossovers, those who wish to experience other offerings, and some folks with simply no preference whatsoever.

To those without allegiance welcome to the force…… and beware of the dark side……. OK I will stop now….

But in nearly everything human related there is an urge to somehow support your favourite. If an RCI fan ventures to a Carnival CD’s blog, it would be imprudent to think there may not be some pro-Carnival repartee going on.

But then again lack of fun can cause psychological acuity to plummet ….. allegedly.

  52. John H says:

    John -

We have been cruised on Carnival 14 times and on RCCL 21 times and I can tell you the staff on both cruise lines make fun of the other one.

I work at Home Depot and we make fun of Lowes all the time. I have friends who work at Lowes and I know they do the same to Home Depot.

That is why it is called ‘friendly competition’.

If if recall correctly, when Carnival had the fire on the Ecstasy when it was leaving Miami years ago one of the RCCL ships (I think the Sovereign) stayed close by in case they were needed until the situation was under control. Now those are the things that really matter – people taking care of other people in times of need.

  53. Mike & Loretta Brown says:

    John,

You summed it up in the end. All the laughter, anger, sadness, joy…it’s all about life…and how we go through it. We are blessed to spend it with our family and friends and have to learn to enjoy it while we can. We never know when the fin might in. Your guest is in our prayers!

    Mike and Loretta

  54. Joe Kyle says:

I was on the Carnival Conquest in January 07, Carnival Freedom May 07, Carnival Ecstasy Dec 07 and Royal Caribbean Voyager of the Seas in January 08 with a group. No question Royal Caribbean has very loyal cruisers, beside us; we never spoke with a single returning RC cruiser that had been on anything but RC in years.

This was a beautiful ship, a very nice returning cruiser recognition program, a Captain that did sing Country & Western rather well, good dinner service and a great ice skating show, but the rest of the cruise was a disaster. This was the consensus of our whole group too. Entertainment was fair, food selection and taste very poor both in the dining room, cafeteria and grill. The cylinder pod they called my shower would not allow a large person to take a bath all week.

The sophisticated atmosphere is gone on RC. Their Cruise director started off the first night with a joke that he and his brother from Arkansas” were going to start a cruise line where everyone could come to dinner in their underwear and eat with their fingers, but found out Carnival had beat them to it.” I have been on eight Carnival cruises and found this insulting, rude, crude and unsophisticated. This same CD showed up on formal night dressed in a Camouflaged Tux. For a line that has had such a good reputation they are in serious trouble

We then spent the week with a very limited evening menu, bad pizza, terrible hamburgers at their grill, and cookies hard enough to be used as hockey pucks, bland food including prime rib that tasted like it had been boiled it was so flavorless; A week of meals where we only enjoyed breakfast which proved to be the worst food we have ever had on any cruise.

I did not think these comments belonged here till now. Anyone that would like to read my Cruise Critic review is welcome to see it as I posted it the week after we returned. I will recap that out of Galveston three ships sail the same basic itinerary which we have sailed on all in the past year and would rate the Conquest best, Ecstasy 2nd and Voyager a distant 3rd.

John, in Texas we say it is not bragging when it’s true; Carnival has bragging rights currently. I have put my time and money where my mouth is, wife and family are already booked on the Ecstasy again for November this year.

  55. Pirate Adventure Leader says:

    John,
I must come to your defense on the African American thing. The real racist is that women worrying about how many AAs you guys hire. Anyone that would have the gall to say “you have no entertainment for us” is an idiot. It does not matter what nationality an entertainer is, the important thing is whether or not they are ENTERTAINING. Don’t let these morons push you around. People who are obsessed with color are the racists. If a white person had said you needed more white entertainers – they would sound racist. This women is doing the same thing, and she is a racist. Being a person of mixed race, this whole thing just burns me. Black racists are no different than white racists in my book.

  61. John here is the information you requested about having dogs on board.I am so proud that Carnivale is not only doing this but taking it seriously. GO JOHN! You may not know, most people don’t but there are several different kinds of service animals. Even a monkey or a minature horse, but right now all you have to deal with are the dogs. First >the pottie boxes should be spaced out and have a different box for each dog. They should be in an are that is easy for the team to get to . And I know the dogs wouldn’t be happy if I didn’t ask for just a little extra room.. A lot of dogs don’t like the First Step litter (my dog uses it every day). Would it be too hard to carry 2 kinds? Also these boxes tend to collect cigarette buts could you post a sign that said something like doggid butts only please.
As I am not sight impaired I don’t know what they go through but I do have experience with a dog on a ship. The dogs should be totally ignored unless the human team person initiates like. Is my dog in your way? She is asking you to mention her dog. Never approach or pet a service dog until the release command has been given. The dog may misread your intentions. Some growel, and some may bite. Valentine would probably lick you to death and hunt in you pockets for her favorite candy, tic tacs, the orange ones, she loves them!

Always remember that dogs like people come in all sizes and have different games. Some are the size of a great dane and then there is Valentine and she weighs 10 pounds. One thing that we always have problems with but not sure how others feel. They seem to think Valentine is a pet and really give us a hard time. I don’t know if it would help to make an announcement or not but I would really be ready to try. Just let people that yes she is a dog but has right to be there. People can be rude.
It might be nice to have a general anouncement made a couple of times the first day that there are service dogs onboard. If you see someone with a lost face ask if they need help and go from there.

I’m sure that you will do fine. If Carnival is behind it it will be great for the dogs and people team. If possable some water bowls for them to share out on deck where it is hot.

    Feel free to ask ,
    Your friend,
    Barbarb Butler

  62. BigMike says:

Just a quick thought, isn’t it ironic that RCI called Carnival the ‘K-Mart of the Seas’ when 1) most of their ships are as big as K-Marts 2) they are the ones that like to use the suffix… of the seas on their floating Super Ks and 3) K-Marts have empty climbing walls (Just kidding, I wouldn’t want to bring down K-Mart). Poor sap, they will never get to have five chocolate melting cakes for dessert… what a shame, they don’t know what they are missing.

Hey John. This msg has nothing to do with your blog today but I wanted to ask you about it. Why can’t Canadians get the Sea Miles. My hubby and I wanted to apply but it is not available to us because we are not from the USA. I think Carnival should really think about expanding this to other countries. I love Carnival and would love to collect the pts that come with this card. Could you please bring it up at some pt in a meeting with the “big guys”. Thanks John…Hope you feel better soon.

John, I have held back as long as I could, but just could not remain silent any longer. The visual was just too powerful. You may have some ‘splainin to do, Lucy, after Heidi reads the comment above about your “performance with the twins.” If you were not in the doghouse already, you certainly are now! LOL! You may be seeing the business end of Sheriff Roscoe’s handcuffs!

John, we are trying desperately to work a way to be on the B2B2B Splendor around S. America. We have been investigating all the ports on Google Earth–and in Puerto Madryn, if you zoom in a little north of the port, you can actually see breeding whales zooming around and stirring up contrails in the sand just offshore! From a satellite image! I HAVE TO do this cruise! The chance of a lifetime!

On a serious note, our prayers truly go out to the couple who had to be medevac’d off the ship. And nothing is stronger than prayer: “…pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man (or woman) is powerful and effective. (James 5:16)NIV

My wife, Nina, experienced the same on the Holiday on the way to the Panama Canal, and we were blessed by the prayers of so many sent into our path all the way home. We know personally that the couple is in the best of hands.

Our love to Captain Heidi, and our best to you, Roberto and Stephanie.

John my intentions were not to upset anyone. I know that every company has there loyal customers and yes everyone passes a joke or two around, but sometimes things get the better of me and i have to speak my peace. I am one that is open for change and I think that one day I will cross over, but the big ships I can’t pass them up, as they grab my attention and I want that experience. Happy Sailing!!!!!!

  68. Sounds great that there will be a Blogger’s Cocktail party on the Inaugural cruise. How do we register for that?

  69. girldoc says:

John, I am going to honor your request and not comment on that subject you have asked us not to comment on…

Can you update us on the gentleman who had to be taken from the ship? How sad..I feel terrible for his wife.

  70. Peter Judge says:

I hope to be on the 13th july sailing my good friend has definately booked 2 cabins on the following cruise. Can you inform me if it is possible to attend the naming of Splendor if it is taking place 10th July @ Dover as we live in London it’s only a short drive away Regards

  71. Karen R. says:

Hope you get to feeling better John. I had the same thing back about 3 weeks ago and boy, it was awful! I laid on the couch for a week, don’t know how you are managing to do all you do.

Crocs are worth the price!! I never thought I would say this, when I first saw them. My husband bought a pair for our first cruise (11 night southern caribbean) He wore those things almost everywhere we went! He has always had foot problems and he didn’t complain once about sore feet. My daughter worked on her feet all day and wore them. They are the ugliest things but so nice for the feet. Tell Heidi to make sure she gets the Croc brand. Most of the impostors aren’t as comfortable!

I am so excited! My husband was looking at cruises for next year and he is actually looking at Carnival after I have told him all the wonderful things I have learned on your blog. I don’t think I will be able to convince him to go on the Blogger’s cruise, but that’s ok…just so I get to go on a cruise!

Hope we get to hear from Heidi soon! And my prayers are with the couple who had to leave the ship due to illness.

    Karen

    Please Reply

John, did you get the photo I sent with the Blogger’s shirt being modeled by moi? It was taken on our cruise on the Miracle, that ran concurrently with the Blogger’s Cruise.

No reply needed…tell Heidi to be extra careful as she gets used to her new Crocs, especially climbing stairs and around escalators. I love Crocs, and they’re all I wear (except for the occasional Uggs snow boots). They are so comfortable, but do take some breaking in till they mold to your foot. I’ve got them in many colors, and they are lots cheaper if you order them directly from Crocs. Guess it might be rather tough though considering how much you guys move around, literally!

    My best to you both!

    John:

Yes, we did read your reply the other day, and were relieved to hear it from the horse’s……mouth!

Sorry for not thanking you sooner!

    You’re the best!

    John;
After spending 2 fabulous wks B to B Feb2/08-Feb 16/08 on the Freedom it was horrible coming home to snow. The Hi-lites of our cruise were the excursions, your Chic dining room staff and You not necessarily in that order.
The dining staff Manual, Juan & Elvis started the fun from our 1st dinner. Gede (Spiderman) also got in our our fun. We could hardly wait for 6;15 each day to see what would happen next. We have alot of pictures of these 4 and every time seeing them brings back happy memories If you have a chance please thank them again for us. Just mention (Momma) and I’m sure they will remember us.
Now to you John; Being in our Golden Years and all the beautiful sunshine and fresh air we needed our beauty sleep (the beds were so comfortable and inviting) we missed your welcome aboard show Feb 9th but I woke up in the nite and turned the TV on, caught the taping. I have NEVER laughed so hard (afraid I may have disturbed the guests next door. Dick Little, Donna & Larry & Saul. While preparing for the day on Sun it was showing again, called my friends to put TV on chanel 16 When we meant for breakie they had huge smiles on their faces & they hadn’t even seen Dick Little at that stage but through the wk we caught it several times each time just as funny. I bought the DVD & have shown it to family & friend (they can’t believe it wsn’t staged) KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. Sorry we didn’t get to meet you in person.
Glad your feeling better & please don’t judge all QUEBERS by one spoiled apple. My dearest friend is a Queber, wonderful girl.
We went on the Spirit to Hawaii in 2006 had a wonderful time as well. Am saving my pennies for another Carnival cruise as soon as possible. All the Carnival staff are the greatest.
    :Your Canadian Friends
Bob, Betty, Lorna(Momma) and me Doris
Thanks for the memories hope to see you soon
P.S. Lorna & I had side by side state rooms and we asked to have the balcony door opened, was wonderful to have happy hour with our friends and not be crowded, saw some beautiful sun sets also had a lot of laughs (sitting in our P.J.’s )watching the drunks boarding in Cozmel

I was on one of your Alaskan cruises this summer.
We had a blast. Loved it. I will be back. In fact, four of my friends are on a cruise right now! Wish I was there too.

  76. Amy & SGT Jeff Burney says:

I completely support your point of view on this subject. I have to go to many many many training sessions on equal opportunity. Looking around carnival, I see the most diverse workforce I have ever noticed. Looking around my brigade I could count around 20 different nationalities and races. At Carnival, well if I was to start counting, I would spend the entire cruise doing just that counting. Even at that, I don’t think I would even be able to cover half the floors. People that point out difference in the amounts of races and nationalities in a very well-balanced work-force are just being counter-productive and petty. Being an african-american, middle-easterner, european, english, canadian, austrialian, polynesian….. martian, that is talented and friendly, well, there is no end to the employment opportunities available to you…. Get to a recruiter and apply….

    Hi John,

This sounds like one of your harder trips where your diplomatic prowess has has to come to the fore. Well done.
We have a Wine & Food festival happening here in Melbourne at the moment (amongst a million other happenings), and yesterday we spend an afternoon wandering down the banks of our Yarra River and tasting numerous Australian wines. This tends to be like a bit party and you meet such a diverse group of people and have great fun. Anyway we met some young ladies who are dedicated cruisers but have not travelled with Carnival before, consequently we are now sending them details of your website and are actually hoping that we may be able to catch up on the 30th August sailing from Dover on Splendor. Here’s hoping. We have heard again from the lovely couples from Amsterdam, that we met on Freedom last year and look like catching up with them when Splendor docks there in September. We are off to Prudence and Christiaans wedding at end of March (who got engaged on Liberty 2 years ago). How grateful we are for having found the Carnival family and the resultant friendships that have been made. Love to see all the comments from the bloggers. Best wishes to you all.

    Suzanne & Lisa

  78. Heather Jeffery says:

P.S. 99% of those of us who were on board last week had NO idea that there was someone so upset with Carnival and you. Don’t forget it!! It was a great week!!!

  79. nauticalbynature says:

Perhaps “Mrs. Pro African American” would be surprised at just how many citizens direct from Africa & South Africa are employed by Carnival.
As well to this lady I would also remind her that the average guest only sees about 25% of the crew while many other crew are hard at work in areas not visited by guest..Engine room, laundry, mess halls etc.
As valid as her complaint may be about hiring African Americans, I truly believe her comments certainly do not apply to the cruise industry.
