I was only 10 feet behind him and at the time he was just another young man walking on the open deck as were Heidi and I. It was lunch time and I fancied a bit of spicy Wok but Heidi said no she wanted to eat first………….so off we went for lunch.

The kid…………again I would guess he was anywhere from aged 15 – 35 was also heading for the food. He had been given an unfortunate start on life as he had obviously been born with no sense of balance. Because of this disability he had been forced into carrying a plastic bottle of beer in each hand to act as a stabilizer.

It was as we approached the deck 10 starboard side entrance to the restaurant that he decided that he in fact regained his balance and therefore he did not need his starboard side stabilizer …………..so…………….giving it one last drain to make sure it was void of any beer he simply dropped it on the floor ………… where it landed ……did a little bounce………spun around and lay there waiting for someone else to pick it up or worse…………stand on it and trip over.

As I may have mentioned before I do not have a temper and usually when things like this happen I usually just roll my eyes, tut a bit and just pick the thing up myself. Today was different………maybe because I couldn’t roll both my eyes because of my affair with Mr. Bell…………..maybe because he did it in such a rude arrogant manner that today…………….I let leash the God’s of War.

I was so angry……I wanted to grab the bottle and shove it up his bottom yelling “This Bud is for you.” I wanted to whisk him off to Turkey and give him to Fatima and her plastic hose. I wanted to ……..well………….you get the picture.

What I actually did was grab his shoulder………….say “Excuse me”…………and demand that he pick the bottle up. He looked at me and I think he had no clue who I was………….why would he…………..I have not held any shows in his cabin or the dance club. However I saw his eyes meet mine and drift down to the name tag I was wearing that declared I was “John Heald – Senior Cruise Director”………….this along with the fact that I only have one eye and face that would make Ernest Borgnine feel handsome was enough for him to pick the bottle up……………as he did so he made a noise with his lips that I cannot begin to tell you how it sounded……….sort of a tutshhhhhhhhhhhhh …………… Ignoring this we followed him while he placed the bottle on one of the tables.

Heidi and I sat and ate lunch and I have to admit I was feeling pretty blue…………it had been a horrible day…………beyond horrible and for reasons I will explain at a later date. Please don’t worry……….everything is fine with us etc but something had happened onboard that really had me feeling all over the place……………and not just me either……………..I will tell you more later this week.

Anyway, sorry to ramble on but I am trying to portray how my feelings were when I was dealing with Mr. Stabilizer and I was still fuming when a gentlemen approached Heidi and I during our lunch. He was an older chap with beautiful white hair and a big red happy nose………….he reminded me immediately of my Dad’s best friend at home Norman.

Anyway, he just wanted to say hello and reminisce on this great cruise and how much he loved the European adventure we had shared together on the Carnival Liberty. I invited him to sit with us and as he drank his coffee and I ate my lunch we chatted about the wonders of Europe and his passion for Tuscany. He left 15 minutes later and I felt a little better………….it was as though someone upstairs had seen that I needed a large order of normality and had sent the man with the white hair and shiny red nose to come and see me………………It was also a reminder after my run in with Mr. Stabilizer that this week ………. here on the Carnival Freedom…………….we have both ends of the evolutionary scale sailing with us.

Time for some random photos.

Let’s push on with the comments shall we…………..here we go.

MARC G…………………..Thanks for the kind words mate and the only way women would crawl over broken glass to get to me is if George Clooney was strapped to my back. Hope all is well mate and thanks again for the great posting.

GREG B………….It is indeed amazing how popular Bean Bag Toss is as your saw from the photos. I am indeed a fan of Dumb and Dumber and my favorite line is when he asks where the girl is from and she says “Austria”……….Jim Carrey’s reply is of course “G’day mate, put another shrimp on the barbie.” …………..classic. The Captain handled our dumb and dumbers with amazing professionalism as have all the crew. Thanks Greg and look forward as always to your next posting.

JULIE C…………Hello Julie and yes of course I remember reading your letter and I am so happy you wrote in. It is not every day that you hear of a Pastor of a Church who is going to open up a brewery. I thought the whole thing was brilliant and the fact that you are going to do this as a family is very special. Unfortunately there are no master copies of the morning shows so we shall have to rely on our memories but I hope that when you write again you will tell all of us a little something about your new venture and maybe some of the 1.7 million readers will be able to support it in someway if they are in the area. I look forward to hearing from you and please send my best to all your wonderful family.

FLIP FLOP CRUISE QUEEN………..Please tell your secretary welcome to the blog. I am glad I had you and her laughing and this week there certainly is enough material for that to keep happening for days to come. Cheers to you both .

SHERRIF ROSCOE P COLTRANE…………….Tell you what……….come over and arrest Mr. Stabilizer for littering and you can have a whole vat of Mr. Daniel’s finest. Seriously………….remind me before you sail and I am sure Deputy John will be able to send you a little something. Cheers mate.

BIG ED AND PAT……………Indeed it was good to hear about Susan. I will make sure I post anything else I hear. Hopefully we will receive some good news about Maria as well. Thanks as always to you both and Heidi and I send you our kindest regards.

AMY B…………..Hello Amy and please do not worry. There is a fabulous Club O2 lounge on the Carnival Miracle all the way at the front of the vessel. This is a great place to hang and chill out. Tell you what…………if you keep reading the blog I will post some photos of the Club in a few days for you to see. Hope this is OK and I know you will meet many new friends in September when you cruise. Cheers Amy.

CRAIG……….Hello mate and thanks for making a posting here on the blog thingy. I am glad you completed the review card as you said and as always there ways in which we can improve in all areas as you said. However, completing the card in a positive way as you did shows that overall you had a great time and this reflected in how you rated the various departments. I think you will all find the new wording on the upcoming cards easier to understand and therefore easier to give a simple and honest answer on…………I hope so anyway. Meanwhile I am so glad you are enjoying the blog thingy and I hope that will continue for many months to come. Cheers mate.

MARK TWAIN AND A HALF……………Just so you know mate I just forwarded your suggestions on Carnival comment card statements up the ladder. I particularly loved the “WOW, I DIDN’T THINK EVEN CARNIVAL COULD BE THAT GOOD” statement. Maybe we should have something a bit more radical like this. Thanks also for the jokes; they came at a very needed time. Cheers mate.

SHARON DOVER………….Now I understand your question Sharon and excuse me for not doing so the first time. It is a great question………will the Carnival Splendor undertake a cruise from San Francisco back to Fort Lauderdale? Well, at this time I know of no plans to do this – since the ship begins year-round 7-day Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach following its stop in San Francisco — however judging by how popular the first trip has been it might be a possibility one day. I will ask PA 007 to keep his/her ears and eyes open (as I can only manage one eye) and let us know should such plans arise. Sorry I cannot be more specific at the moment but let’s see what the future holds. Heidi and I send you our best meanwhile and thanks again for reading the blog thingy.

CRUISIN GRANDMA………….I know you have been unwell Grandma so I wanted to start by saying that I have been thinking about you. I know you are looking forward to your cruise on the Carnival Inspiration in May and hopefully you will have your strength back by then. You asked who your cruise director will be………….the answer is Risa Barnes. She is a great lady and someone whom I know you will enjoy so much. Thank you for sending me get well thoughts especially as you are not doing so good yourself. Heidi and I send you our warmest regards and get well soon.

SLICKABRINA……..explain the wink wink please???………..you have me interested.

BIG ED…………..The card will be changed mate and is already out on a few test ships. It will be fleet wide soon and I think all of us will prefer the new format. Cheers.

DEBORAH ROSATO…………….I just wanted to say a big thank you for the web site link thingy with information on my mate Mr. Bell. I found reading about others who have and are still suffering very helpful indeed. It was so kind of you to send me this information and I also hope that Mr. Bell buggers off very soon. Thanks again Debs you are so very nice.

LEE RAYBURN……………I firstly wanted to say thank you for the posting which must have taken lots of time and effort to write. Its interesting is it not that in the cruise industry there are so many ways for people to publicly post their negative and positive comments and the “boards” you are referring to are certainly one of the most popular of those ways. I had read one or two of the negative comments about the Carnival Freedom and some of the points are maybe well founded while many are not and are based on opinion. However, in the free society we all enjoy opinions are something everyone has and some people enjoy sharing theirs more than others. Overall, the Carnival Freedom’s European season was a huge success and the overall ratings were running at 99% of the people sating they had enjoyed their cruise. Still, one man’s wine is another mans poison and we realize that there are always going to be people who will be the “critic” and express their opinions on others. My only hope is that when people read these reviews they read them all and see that on every ship on every line there are good, bad and excellent reviews. I hope these people read them all and then decide for themselves and not just on a stranger’s opinion. I am so glad you had a great time and as you will have read on the blog thingy the situation you saw with the couple at the Information Desk is not unique …………..it happens all the time and as long as it does ………. Well …………I guess I will have things to write about. Thanks mate and I really appreciated your posting today.

ORAZIO………………..Without sounding a big Ruffiano…………….it’s great to have you back Captain…………….yes…………ladies and gents……………Captain D’Aita reads the blog and posted today as well……………..by the way,………….. A guest could not remember his name so he called him Captain Orlando Bloom …………………good grief! Thanks Captain and all of us thank you for everything you do each and every day.

ALAN D…………..Although you did not have a direct question I did want to say welcome to the blog thingy as this is your first post and you have just started reading. It sounds like you have a lot to celebrate when you sail on the Carnival Miracle and I hope also that you enjoy this one as much as you did 7 years ago. If you have any questions before you go please let me know and if not I hope you will keep reading the blog thingy. Please have a wonderful trip and a very happy birthday to you wife. Cheers.

RICHARD COWAN………….Guitar Hero will indeed be ready and waiting for you on the Carnival Splendor. Hope to see you there. Cheers.

CAROL SCHOENBERGER…………I did see your last comment Carol and I was interested in which bit of the blog made you laugh so hard? Anyway, hope you find time to write again soon and as always best from Heidi and I.

JERI GREEN…………..Yes mate, I am sorry to that I will not be with you but I know you will have a great time. I am having acupuncture at the end of the week so I hope that will be the thing that makes all the difference. Thanks again and I hope one day we will sail with each other. Cheers.

LISA ALMON……………My goodness how wonderful to read your posting where you said how much you enjoyed sailing with us last week here on the Carnival Freedom. The fact that you want to book another cruise straight away is testament to the great crew I am privileged to work alongside. You asked what ship I am going to be on next. I will be on the new vessel the Carnival Splendor from June through December. I will then be ashore for a while and then in February we will have a Bloggers Cruise held onboard the newly renovated Carnival Fantasy. This will be where all my friends from the blog come together for a very special 5-day cruise. Maybe you could join us? Anyway, have a think about what you want to do and if you have any other questions please let me know and I will be here for you. Thaks again for the kind words and I send my warmest regards to you and your family.

BETHC……….having read a bit more about you and your 5 year old then the answer is simple………..if you can…………sail Europe. The mixture of a great time onboard for your son plus the chance for you to see Europe and all the treasures of places like Italy, Greece, Turkey and Russia should have you booking now. Have a think about this and the next step would be to discuss what itinerary you prefer. I am here to help you with of course as well. My best to you and your son. Cheers.

RBGATES………..Do most of your guests complete a review card you asked? Well about 50% off the guests do. We do encourage a one per person completion but usually it works out about one per cabin with some guests………..just not bothering. I can understand this of course, I cannot remember the last time I turned in a comment card at a hotel……….I guess if anyone should…..I should.

I am glad you continue to enjoy the blog thingy and if I do ever write a book I promise you a copy straight away. Cheers.

MOCHA JOE…………..I see you have requested a photo of Krysta the dancer whom I guess made quite an impression on you. I will post one as requested in the next few days. Do you want one of me as well? :(

VICKI……………Just in case you missed my answer to how many Spring Breakers will be sailing on 3/22………..answer is 1467………………. kidding………255 ………….oh and 700 regular smaller versions. See you on Saturday ………you will have a great time I promise. Cheers.

CAPTAIN BILL…………….Hello Captain. You asked if we show the crew members the positive comments guests write about them on the review cards. The answer is “yes.” Each crew member gets a copy plus a copy goes on their file. Exceptional comments are place on our community wall in the crew area for everyone to read. You also asked if the Carnival Splendor will stop in Boston and unfortunately the answer is “no.” If it did, Heidi and I would probably be there, it is one of our favorite places. Hope things are well with you Captain and I hope you continue to read the blog.

TERESA C….……If I had to have a role model, George Hamilton would be much higher up the list than George Clooney. There is something about the bronzed stud that is Mr. Hamilton that makes me very jealous. Still, because of my current condition, I would be happy to look like George Foreman. Cheers Teresa.

CHERYL D………………..It is interesting that you think we could make a TV show out of the blog…..I have never thought of that. Would you or anybody else watch? They certainly would, if as you suggested, George Hamilton played me. Thanks for the great posting. All the best.

LINDA THE MOUSE…….Just in case you haven’t read my previous reply. Heidi and I gratefully received your Easter basket and cards. Your friendship is so important to us both and we thank you for all your kindness.

JULIE GANTT…………….That was very funny. Someone actually called you at the funeral home asking for escort service. There are so many jokes there that you probably don’t need me for any of them. Thank you, seriously though, for all your kind words for all your blogging friends and of course for me and I look forward to getting that hug very soon. Cheers.

SHIRLEY CALES…………Just wanted to say a quick Thank You for helping Amy.

JAY WISE…………………Hello Jay. How strange you should write. I remember seeing you when I walked into the infirmary for the first time wondering what had happened to me. I hope you are doing well and I just wanted to say thank you very much for thinking of me. I hope you continue to read the blog.

MICKEY’S PAL……………It was great to hear about the young Social Host on the Celebration, called Andre. It certainly seems, he loves Bean Bag Toss and the Championship Belt idea is wonderful. We have a young man here called Brandon who is equally as keen. Many of the activities are only as good as our staff who hosts them. That is why we feel we have the finest entertainment staff at sea. Thank you Myra and I hope all is well with you.

BETH……………………..Thank you very much and the restaurant you recommended is actually one I have been to before. I went with Heidi and Captain Cupisti when we were preparing the Carnival Legend. I remember I had reindeer, it was fantastic, although a little sweet. I hope you can convince the family to cruise and if I can help in any way, please let me know. Cheers.

SUSAN AND LISA……..It is strange that you were never introduced to the Captain at the formal night party. We always stand by the entrance to the lounge for the first 35 minutes shaking hands, saying hello. I promise that in August, not only shall we meet but we shall hug like old friends. See you both very soon and can you bring me a didgery doo. Cheers.

LAMB KNUCKLES……….I am sorry we will not be cruising with the bloggers on the Queen Mary, although I think we made the right choice. I will let you know the plans for 2010 once we have 2009 all set. I am glad you are enjoying the blogs and you will be happy to know I had a lamb free week. All the best.

WENDY…………………….Yes, you are correct, this will be my last cruise on the Carnival Freedom for a bit. I have a mental picture of your 10-year-old son, piling clothes into the suitcase. I hope you treasure every moment with him. It would be my honor to welcome you on board. I hope you leave me a little note when you arrive. Cheers.

MAC AND FAMILY……….I have not received the mail although I know Chris Prideaux has lots for me. I am sure Heidi will be very excited to see her two new hoody sweatshirts from the mighty state of Colorado. She will need those all the time as she is always cold. Heidi says a big thank you and so do I, for all your kindness. Cheers.

KICIASKI…………………..I asked Heidi and out of the 2 you mentioned she recommends the Avenue Hotel. She wanted to let you know that this hotel is very close to the “amusing but not always totally secure Red Light District,” although it is in the center. The Savoy Hotel is on the other side of town and will require a lot of public transportation. Have you tried the Golden Tulip, the Radisson SAS or the Marriott? Hope this helps and thank you also for all your great comments. It will be so wonderful to see you again.

ALEXANDRA O…………I am so sorry to hear about your last few months and I see you are also wanting to be a Cruise Director. If there is anything you feel I can do to help you, I will gladly do so. I wish you all the best.

BILL ZYDECOCRUISER…I have not seen any demographics Bill for the Carnival Splendor July 13 cruise. Let me get back to you and I will let you know. I can tell you the Circle C lounge will be on Deck 4 Forward outside the dining room. This room is currently used amongst other things to host my morning shows. Hope all is well with you Bill. Cheers mate.

JESSICA…………………….Please, please, please do not stop posting. That would be a terrible shame and I know it is definitely not what Lance or anyone else would want. Your enthusiasm was justified and a small pebble in a teacup has not disrupted this wonderful community we have together. I do hope to see your name again soon and I for one will miss not writing to you.

PGTULSA………………….I am looking forward to seeing all my British friends on the Carnival Splendor, especially those who are bringing supplies of Monkey Tea and digestive biscuits. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you and see you soon.

SHARON TIEMAN……….Congratulations on your next cruise being your Platinum cruise. I know you will enjoy all the wonderful benefits. I am so sorry to hear about your husband and I want you to know that knowing the blog makes you laugh and for a moment takes you away from your troubles and concerns makes me a very proud and humble man. Heidi said, don’t be silly, safe your money and don’t buy her a hoody from Alaska. If you translate this, it means, Yes please. Can’t wait to see you and my best to you and the family.

That’s all for tonight. I am sorry I did not answer everyones but…….well………..I will tomorrow I promise.

I just got back from the Talent Show and I must admit…………my heart was not in it………….I didn’t even do the Bedtime Story and you all know how much I look forward to hosting that every week.

It has been a tough day and not because of someone dropping a bottle on the floor or my silly Bells Palsy thing.

I can’t tell you much…….you will understand I am sure………..and some of you may be able to tell from this blog that my heart and mind have been elsewhere ……..here’s why.

Today, unexpectedly and peacefully, a guest whom the Captain and I had met on Sunday evening passed away. It has left me realizing once again how precious live is and I know all of you will be thinking of her and the family she left behind.

There is a new angel in heaven tonight, who spent her last hours having fun with us here on the Carnival Freedom.

There is a new angel in heaven tonight.

John.

  • John,
My deepest condolences to the loss of the passengers family. Personally and I’m not saying this to be funny I can’t think of a better way to go than sailing on a carnival ship with great people, like yourself and Heidi. As for Mr. Stabilizer I hope you haven’t meet his cousin yet Mr. Projector, See he likes to share things with everyone so sometimes when the tank is a bit over full of Mr. Beer he has the ability to empty his entire stomach contents where ever he is currently located within a few minutes. Usually is a noisy manor with things flying at a high rate of speed. Hopeing that Mr. Bell decides to head back to France soon, and I think you should make Mr. Stabilizer visit Mr. Drunk Tank next time. And maybe cause his card not to operate at the local filling station. Cheers my friend I look forward to your next blog.

    Kevin

  • John a sad day for you the family of the deceased and the crew, I am sure. But, you said it quite elegantly, that she spent her final hours with loved ones and a time she obviously enjoyed. I think we all would gladly spend our final hours (if we were allowed to choose) in a similiar way?
    GOD Bless.

Although it is sad to have lost a guest it is some consolation that she was having her last days aboard the Freedom, with great company. For me, that would be a destiantion before the heavenly destination that I would savour….Not for us to choose…but God chose you to meet her and I am glad he did. All of us who “know” you………would agree. You and Mr. Bell, would be a great day in any life………

Hope the Stabilizer bunny gets straight……

    Yours,

    Kap (Kathie)

  • Good Afternoon John,

I’m sorry to hear that Mr. Bell seems to have taken up permanent residence with you. I’m sure Mr. Immune System is trying very hard to evict him.

It’s always hard when someone passes away and I can understand how that would effect you. All the sympathetic words somehow just don’t get rid of the feelings. As you say at least she was enjoying herself and that says alot. I have told my children when my time comes I pray that I’m doing something I love and enjoy with family.

Now the bottom of the evolutionary ladder….I can’t say that I blame you for being angry with the “young man”. Just think of what his home looks like, that ought to give you a small smile. Pig Sty comes to mind. It makes me angry when I see it whether on a cruise or just out in public. So I can imagine how you felt this is your “home”. Someday this person will own a house, car, etc and ……..hmmmmm?

By the way how is Alan doing you haven’t given us an update lately and he’s been on my mind.

You take care and give Heidi (she has to be a saint)a hug,

    Joan

  • John,
I am so truly sorry to hear the sad news about the death of the passenger. That would never be a situation you learn to deal with as a cruise director.
Yes, you can rest assured that the passenger spent the last days of her life enjoying herself on your ship. She did not have to suffer a long illness and that says a lot.
As I have said so many times on this blog, life is precious. We need to cherish the moments we have with friends and family.
My thoughts and prayers will certainly be with her family.
    Ruth

  • John, hugs, thoughts, and prayers to the family of the new angel and those whose lives she touched….It is so sad to see someone go, especially when someone new leaves us emotionally in a way we’d never imagine. (makes sense?)

Please take care of yourself with the BP. Don’t let those pesky spring-breakers (in more ways than one) get you down. I assure you that you do not look like a cycloptic Ernest Borgnine…Have faith, my friend… faith. This too shall pass.

By the time you probably read this, you’ll have a new group to blog about…new smiles and new adventures. It can only get better from here…

Tell your bride hello…and save a hearty high-ho to your fellow marketing crew. How hard they work to get out Carnival’s fun message!

  • John,

You are indeed right. There is a new angel in heaven and I am sure she went to those pearly gates smiling and chuckling because she was able to spend her last few hours on Earth with you, Heidi and the wonderful Carnival crew and staff sailing on a beautiful ship.

How terrific! The Freedom has it’s very own angel looking down upon her and keeping her safe.

  • John, the guest that became a new angel did not have far to travel she was already in heaven aboard the Freedom. Our prayers go out to her and the family in their time of loss.

Can you just imagine how often this will happen on a 6000 passenger ships that are coming down the line. I sure hope Carnival doesn’t think they need to go that big. Just think of all your problems being doubled embarkation/disembarkation, tendering lines medical emergenceies and spring breakers.

    BIG ED

  • Hi John,

I was just thinking that when we are on the Splendor in July we will not be able to read the blog and thus find out what comments you have of our own cruise. We would of course want to read about you’re toughts of the cruise we are on. So i was thinking of making something like a “John Heald Capers” that is in fact a print out of you’re blog. This can then be delivered like the carnival daily (or whatever it is called) to our stateroom every day. And of course only for bloggers who registered for this service. Hope it’s possible to arrange for something like this. Of course we could go online on internet to read the blog but for us dutch people that’s to expansive :-)

    Greetings, Karl

John, Well you started me out laughing with todays blog and ended up with me tearing up at the end of the blog. My thoughts and prayers are with the dear woman’s family. What a way to go though–sharing precious time with your family and loved ones and doing something that she obviously enjoyed–cruising. Live is so precious and we need to enjoy every moment that we have here on this earth and be grateful for every day that we wake up! Imagine those who have no family or friends and who pass on all alone. Take each day in stride and learn not to stress over the small stuff. Live life to the fullest, as we never know when the time will arrive, for us to move on. If I had a chance to choose how my life would end, it would be just how this woman so gracefully did it. My thoughts to her family and friends and hopefully the fun and memorable times that they shared with her will help to carry them through this most difficult time.
    Sheryl

  • John, first, may I offer my condolences to the family of the lady that passed. My sympathies to you also as I can tell I it has had it’s effect on you too.
John, I think what you really really need is a cruise with your bloggers. I think that would not only cheer you up, but make you forget the Mr. Bell thing, a little anyway. Unfortunately it is 11 months away. sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I sit here day after day and read your blog and laugh so hard that Don can hear me all the way in the living room over the noise of the TV. I enjoy all of your stories of things that are happening on the ship, and it makes me wish we were on the ship with you and Heidi. I was wishing it so much that I started having cruising withdrawls. You know the only cure????? yeap
Pick up the phone and call Kanecia, our very sweet travel agent with Carnival, and book a cruise.
So that is exactly what Don and I did yesterday afternoon. After we booked the cruise we discovered the date we chose was going to almost overlap our race plans in Talledega, AL. I called Kanecia again and she was so kind and helpful in changing the date. So we have finally got it set for Sept. 22 on the Holiday out of Mobile, AL. We always cruise around that time to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. I just wish the CD was going to be a certain John and his lovely wife Heidi. But we do have the bloggers cruise to look foreward to, but dang 11 months is a long way off. sighhhhhhhh

  • Hi John
First of all I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the family who lost a loved one. To lose someone while on vacation must be devastating. My thoughts are with them. Now to the young man who dropped the beer bottle without a thought – this makes me so angry, I am surprised that you could hold your anger as you did. Obviously some people are there on “Daddy’s money” and don’t even stop to think of all the hard work the crew does to keep the ship in well- ship shape (no pun intended). He obviously expects others to pick up after him and he is most likely just the same at home. If I had seen that man do that while I was on the ship a couple of weeks ago I don’t think I would have held back -and I am sure I would have embarassed him in front of everyone- either that or maybe I would have embarassed myself too. Hope your affair with Mr. Bell ends soon.

  • Hey John and Heidi,
sure am sorry to hear about the passing of one of the passengers this week. I too am suffering this week from the loss of one of our baseball player’s mom that was killed Saturday night in a tragic car accident. She was 39 years old and such a sweet person. We had just talked and laughed the week before at a game as I told her about my recent cruise with you and she was admiring my new ring that my husband bought me in St. Thomas and the purses that I bought my son’s girlfriend and myself in San Juan. My thoughts and prayers to that family. Hope you are enjoying your candy and the football “state championship” tee shirt that we gave you and maybe we will have one for the baseball team this season too. Thanks for sharing the “good, the bad, the sad, and the ugly” with us! Can’t wait to read your blog each day and all the comments! Hope you are well soon and tell Heidi hello!

    John:

Our thoughts and prayers to the family of the lady who passed away. This is indeed the sad part of the Circle of Life. I hope some comfort for the family will come in the fact that; while death can remove the physical….it can’t touch the love and wonderful memories held in the hearts of the loved ones left behind….. for the rest of their lives.

  • Hi John,

I’m truly sorry to hear that you were affected by this, life is a precious thing, and I’ve always lived my life by one motto, it may sound silly but here goes,

“Don’t take life too seriously, cause you’ll never know when you’ll get out alive.”

Basically, live your life the way you want to live it, enjoy it, smile, laugh, and have fun (aboard a Carnival cruise of course) and live every day like its your last.

I hope this quote can help you through you down moments, maybe print it out real big and post it on the wall in front of the computer so thay way if you’re ever feeling down, you can read it to bring you back up again.

Talk to you again soon my friend.

    -Marc G

  • Oh John, I’m so sorry about the passenger that passed away. I hope it was sudden and no pain for her.

Yes I got the info on the kiddes–at least the young ones wont be in the bars.

I thought you were getting off the ship on the 22 ?

    Hi to Heidi !

  • John,

It must take all your willpower to get through the day when “stuff” is Phd. Once you’ve made it through Spring Break life should be a bit calmer, eh? Of course some adults are on “break” all their lives, but mostly they behave moderately.

So sorry about the guest who passed away. I’m wondering whether it was the 80 year young lady from the past guests party whom you mentioned a few blogs ago. Regardless, it’s bound to affect you personally when you’ve spent time chatting with someone who is then suddenly gone.

Hope this doesn’t seem crass, but you’ve had, what? Three incidents recently? Is this unusual or just something passengers aren’t usually aware of unless they happen to get involved with a certain blog? It’s kind of like, I never gave any thought to people “disappearing” from ships in the middle of the ocean until a couple or three incidents were in the press a while back. Okay, enough gloom. Sorry.

Please look to the future. You’ve got your Princess cruise coming up and then you get to have fun with the Splendor. You mentioned an 18 day trip to Europe to “visit” the Splendor. What will you be doing during that visit? Probably deciding just where to put my vase of flowers and bottle of champaign in my cabin October 29, right?

Is the Splendor completed yet, or are they still outfitting her? Don’t you love getting to be on all the brand new ships before they get all smudged up? Do you go around wiping off fingerprints…kind of like when one buys a new car? Until that first (inevitable) scratch is put on you just don’t want anyone to touch it’s shiny surface!

Well, I’ve decided that before my cruise I will lose at least 20 pounds (of weight, not money) so it’s back to the gym. Wish me luck. Or better still, willpower!

Hi to Heidi, and my best wishes to you both,

    Myra

  • Thanks for getting back to me John; take care of yourself and Heidi ; we’ll see you in 122 days (not that I’m counting)

  • Hi John,
My deepest condolences to the family who has lost the love one on your cruise. At first I was thinking what a way to go. Then I started to think about the family and all they will have to go through. What a tough way to spend a vacation. We will keep them as well as you and Heidi and the crew in our prayers.
Sounds like another rough week which makes three in a row. I think it’s about time for Mr. Bells to hit the road along with all the problem people. You need to have a week of fun and festivities like a cruise is supposed to be.

Don’t forget to keep the stiff upper lip….

    John

  • Heaven has two new angels tonight John, as we lost one of our beloved fur babies today as well. It’s hard to see to type through my tears, but please know the lovely lady was and is in a far better place. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, and you as well.

  • Afternoon John!

Wow, sounds like you’ve had quite the week so far. Glad I took my group of clients last week and not this one! I’m only 37 and your stories of their antics are making me feel old! Haha! There were quite a few spring breakers on our sailing but they were pretty well behaved! I do love your “this bud’s for you” idea – I’d be pretty tempted! Way to maintain your cool!

Not sure if you’d know for sure or not (you do seem to be all knowing!) but that vantriliquist appears to be the same one that performed on the Liberty last May when we were on for our annual conference. Really funny guy – thought I would pee by the end of his performance!

Gosh that poor family! But as some others mentioned, surrounded by all things Carnival is the way to go!

And “chin up” young man! We are our own worst critics. You are exceptional at what you do and while you think that you aren’t giving 110%, I am fairly certain that no one but you knows it! I was there when you first introduced Mr Bell to the world and from a guest’s point of view you did not miss a single beat!! We were all amazed at how well you handled the situation and continued to do so throughout the remainder of the cruise. Dispite how you think that you might be performing at the moment, you’re still the most amazing cruise director sailing the seas!!

Cheers for now and sail with you soon!
(long time reader, first time blogger!)

  • Oh John, another sad news? My thoughts and prayers are with the angel and her family. I must agree with few other bloggers above – she was with family on Carnival Freedom before she left… That is a way to go!
Have you been exercising your face? We want that Mr. Bells gone soon.
Got my cruise documents last night – 23 days to go (but who’s counting?) :o )))))))

  • Just wanted to give my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the guest who passed away.
God Bless my thoughts and prayers are with them

  • Hi John: You know, without your blog, we would never know about the people who have passed away. I never thought about this before, but it’s true, we’re there having a grand old time, never thinking that our days are numbered. Please pass on my sincere sympathy to the family.

Now for the beginning of your blog, I was waiting for you to really let this guy have it. It’s a terrible shame that these things happen.Of course you handled this the right way, but I guess your stomach was killing you…..

Anyhow, you are confusing me. On one post today, you said you will be on the Splendor through December and then on shore. Our cruise is January 10th. Does this mean you will not be on board as our CD? Please respond……..

Thanks. And I hope this acupuncture works and you’ll be back to your old self soon.

    Regards,
    Terry

    John,

I’m so sorry to hear about the lady’s passing. A friend of mine (whom I met through your Facebook page) told me about it before I read today’s entry. It’s very sad, but at least she passed peacefully, and was in a beautiful place. My condolences to her family and to you. We had two medical emergencies, I believe, on our Freedom cruise this Feb. 23. The first was on the Wednesday night, when we had to go back to St. Thomas, and again on Saturday morning heading back to Miami. Would you happen to know the status of those individuals? The one man was 88, who ended up in the ICU in St. Thomas, and was to be released the following week. Forgive me if you had mentioned it already. Thanks ahead of time for letting me know.

As for Mr. Stabilizer, I like the way you handled it. I just hope no one becomes a victim of his littering and gets hurt falling. That’s not going to be a good time for anyone.

I hope Mr. Bell decides it’s time to depart the ship soon. I have a friend who had Bell’s and she got better quickly. May your episode be short-lived as well.

    Shannan :)

  • Hello~
I would have to agree, what a fantastic way to go. I could not thin kof a better way, peacefully sleeping to the rocking of the boat forever.

As for the litter bug, PLEASE!!!! I am sure a table was only a few steps away to, there are places to put garbage all over the ships, what a lazy bum…….

I am also trying desparately to get a video up of our new ferrets for you to see. Alas they are just running up the stairs. I will have to get a video of them jumping around so that you can get a good laugh of how frisky and fun they are and then whenever you need a laugh you can check it out. Little monsters will get all riled up and then they see your stocking feet and POUNCE, they become all teeth as your foot becomes the toy. Of course it is also entertaining to see how our cat has interacted with the 3 new ones. We have 2 girls each 1 pond each: Sydney and Roo. And 1 boy 3 pounds: Oz.

At one point we did have a FerretCam but 22-23 hours of just seeing ferrets sleeping in a hammock is just pretty dull so we ditched it.

    Laters!
    Deanna

    John, my mate,
You have such a big heart that I know it must be tough for you, but I really think you shouldn’t feel so sad. Obviously, I never knew this lady, but I do know that if it had been me who passed away, I wouldn’t want you sad. I’d want you to throw me the rowdiest wake the world has ever seen! I’d want it in the Victoriana Lounge with balloons and streamers and dancers on the stage wearing those hoop skirts from the Beatles show with the backsides missing. :-)
Maybe I’m being presumptuous, but since she was a fellow Carnival Cruiser, I’m betting that she would have felt similarly.

Please excuse this if you feel this joke is in bad taste, but it really expresses my feelings:

Sean Murphy passed away in Dublin after a long and happy life. His friends threw him a wake in his favorite pub. As is traditional, the body was on view in the middle of the room.
As the night wore on, more and more people showed up and soon they were packed in like sardines. Murphy’s friend Patrick said, “What shall we do, Seamus? There’s ten more people outside shouting to come in, and we haven’t room to spare for a leprechaun.”
Seamus said, “Well look, Murphy here is laid out on this big table. We could move him into a chair and get rid of the table. I’m sure Murphy would want all his friends to be able to come to his party.”
So, it was agreed. Seamus and Patrick picked up their old friend, but then realized they hadn’t made a chair ready. So they shouted to the other partygoers,”Give us a chair for Murphy!” And a drunk in the back of the room yelled,”Hip, hip, hooray!”

So, in honor of my fellow Carnival Cruiser whom I never met, and in rememberance not of her death, but of her life, well lived, I am sure, I say,”Hip, hip Hooray!”

  • John,
I just want to say that I am sorry that you have had to go through losing a passenger. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the lady that passed away. Like you said, she went out doing something absolutely fantastic.

As far as Mr. Stabilizer goes, how rude can you be. You know, some people just amaze me with how they treat other peoples property. Hopefully after that little altercation he will realize he needs to be more considerate.

I know I said this before but I want to repeat. I am still praying that you wake up in the morning and Mr. Bell has left you good as new! Get well soon!

Keep up the good work with the blog. I enjoy reading each and every day.

    Take Care John.
    Cindy & Kevin

  • John, I am at work now but in half an hour my son is picking me up and then we are picking up a few others, loading up luggage, and heading to the airport. But first I wanted to express my sympathy to you and the family of the passenger who is on another voyage now. I hope her family finds comfort in the fact that she was out enjoying life right up the the very end. I suspect that many others cruise for the same reason that I do: to make memories for our families to treasure once we are no longer around. I told my daughter in law yesterday that I hope some day her kids see pictures of this cruise and remember how much fun they had with their grandma. But I also told her that I hope it would be so long from now before I’m gone, that they’ll be amazed at young I was in 2008.

    I’ll see you on Saturday.

    Shirley

  • Hi John/Heidi:
My condolences to the guest and their family who passed away. I know it takes its toll on you and the crew, but how lucky that she was able to spend her last few minutes of life enjoying a vacation (hopefully).
I can understand why some people upset you.
I hope things turn around for you soon.
    Just thinking of you.

    Cheer up :)
    David

  • Hello.
My condolences go out to the family of the guest who passed away. I can’t even imagine how hard it is on you to have to go through this and keep up
“appearances”. Just remember she got to spend her last hours with family in an amazing place…with you on the Carnival Freedom.
I totally understand your anger with the beer guy. How disrespectful to everyone aboard.
Hold your head high and keep truckin’…we all know you will.
Here’s to you and better times to come. We are all thinking of you.

  • My condolences to the family of the newest angel. I’m sure the crew goes thru a whole gammet of emotions when this happens.

Take care and see you in 122 days.
    Barb

  • John, hearing of the death of even a slight acquaintance is disturbing but when it’s someone who has made an impression on you, as this child of God obviously has, it’s doubly difficult.

I fear I know who you’re speaking of.

Yes, indeed, there is a new angel in heaven.

    Peace.

    GregB

  • My condolences go out to the traveler’s family. You can rest assured that she is now in a much better place and left during a wonderful cruise vacation. My heart goes out to you and the entire Freedom staff as I am sure all have been affected by this. I would also like to comment on the pictures you posted of Jerry Goodspeed – what a fantastic ventriloquist. Wow! He is amazing and it was great to see his picture. Keep your chin up.

    Hugs.

  • John,
I liked Karl’s idea of a printed version of the blog, however, I realize this could prove to be an expensive undertaking. Not only would the people on the Splendor want the blog, but you would never be able to escape printing out the blog for the bloggers who were on board. I am not sure I realize have a feasible solution. I do understand, however, that those of us on the ship would want to know your take on how things were going!
    Ruth

  • John:
I’ve tried my best to convince you not to be TanMan Hamilton; however, if you choose to be TanMan George over Hot and Sexy George, then I must throw out the flag. I was about to say “throw up” the flag, but I’m most certain you’ve seen way too much of that on this trip. What can we do to cheer you up???? “Don’t worry, be happy”

  • Sharon,
Thank you so much for putting the “day count” out there. I am not really good about keeping track of how much time…….I just know I wish we were in Dover today and boarding the ship tomorrow! It is going to be great! Can’t wait to actually get to meet you and put a face with a name!
    Ruth

  • Hi John
My condolences to the family and crew this week but I wanted to share something I have never told since it comes to mind today -
When I was on the Tropicale in Alaska in the early 80’s each week when we left Glacier Bay the Capt would slow the ship to a standstill during the dinner hour and the pax could enjoy the pink, orange and blue sunsets while they dined. Unknown to them, down in the marshalling area, the doors would be opened up and we (almost at the water line) would see fish jumping, the occasional whale breach and the little heads of sea lions popping up to see whats up – absolutely beautiful.
The ever ingenious bosuns, and one in particular I remember named Chicho, would try with whatever means they could fashion, to fish off the side and he would call out (and use your best Italian accent here) “Im gonna get a sal-mon-i”
During one of these cruises I was fortunate enough to have my family on board, my Dad was in remission from cancer at the time and I took him down to see the fishing crew. Chicho gave him a line (which was something similar to string on a screwdriver) and they sat on overturned milk crates. Chicho repeating about getting the “big salmoni” and the two fishermen sat…(Chichos English was about as non existant as my Dad’s Italian) but they shared the love of fishing for those few minutes.
Years later I got the call to come home fast as my fathers illness had progressed. I raced home and my father was in his bed, my Mom said he was delirious, but waiting for me. His last words to me, which everyone else thought was delirium was “I’m gonna get a sal-mon-i”..
So there you go – its not the last thought you take with you to wherever you’re going, but its the LASTING thought that carries you on. Im sure you and Carnival are in many a lasting thought and you should be proud and happy to have made for some lasting memories again this week.

    Hi John,

First, please pass along my condolences to the family of the passenger who passed away. Peacefully I hope.

Now, I don’t blame you one bit if you had shoved the beer bottle where the sun doesn’t shime on Mr. Stabilizer.

Time to leave. I’ll catch everyone’s comments in the morning.

    Feel good, John. Bye Heidi

    Carol

  • Hello John: My condolences to the family of the woman who died onboard. But, I agree that being on a cruise ship having fun, there is no better way to go! She is now an Angel looking down on you for making a difference in her life this cruise week. I feel before long Mr. Bells will be gone (taken away by this new angel in heaven)! God Bless! Linda P.S. You are indeed a gentleman in the way you handled Mr. Stabilizer, I doubt I would have been so NICE to him!!!!!

  • :( Un abrazo!! ( yes it is a hug)

  • My condolences on the loss of the lovely lady. Even though she went peacefully in her sleep on a great cruise it is still devastating for her family. She is surely a new angle and at rest. May her family find comfort in this.
Be careful when encountering drunken slobs of any age. I would hate for you to become a victim of a “cruise rage” incident.
Good luck with the upcoming acupunture. Jeri

  • Sorry to hear of the loss and I know it is hard to see someone go, even in the “Fun” surroundings as you have, my the family and all who even on this short trip had met her, find comfort. Remember the smiles, remember the laughter, remember the love of all you met and when they have to leave, cherish the memory of the life they shared.

Wishing you and Heidi all the best,
    Heidi-Beth

  • My condolescense to the families, both hers and the Carnival family. I’m sure her family will take some comfort in knowing she spent her last hours surrounded by family, laughter and the TLC from the Carnival crew.

My thoughts and prayers are also with the family of the passenger who passed away. As others have stated at least she was able to share her last hours with her family aboard such a wonderful vessel as the Carnival Freedom.

A little while ago it dawned on me that last March 13th I had just arrived in Rome for my 3/14 cruise on the Carnival Freedom; she was brand spanking new at that time and we were priviledged to be the first to cruise to Turkey and the Greek Isles aboard her.

I am so glad that you made Mr. Stabilizer pick up the bottle!!! What is wrong with people these days? Imagine what the vessel would look like if everyone just threw trash around and expected the crew to clean up behind them?

Sorry for all of the duplicate posts the other day; Stephanie advised for some reason that my comments were being caught in the “spam filter” until she released them. I am glad to hear that the Easter Basket arrived as the USPS website is still showing it as undelivered? I hope that you enjoy the Easter treats as you are both very special; your jetpack has now been refilled with the sugar free jelly beans.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day….

    Linda

Did anyone notice in John’s reply to Wendy that he said this cruise would be his last on the Freedom. I thought he said March 15th would be his last, which I am on. Does anyone have any insight to this?

Please ignore my last post. I just read the answer again and realize John said March 15th would be his last. I need to learn to read better!!!! Just anxious to be there in 2 days!!!

    Mike

  • John,

I’m sorry to hear about the loss suffered onboard the Freedom. I hope that the nice comments my fellow bloggers have shared will help provide comfort and smiles to you, the Captain and others that were “touched by an angel”.

  • By the way, John, THANK YOU for posting the photo of Krysta. I know you won’t be on the Freedom much longer so I really appreciate you taking the time to do that.

Just another example of why you’re the # 1 CD on the seas!

  • My best wishes to the family of the woman.

I meant to thank you yesterday for responding, but I’ve been busy chasing after 500 5-14 year-olds lately in addition to running my library.

Thanks for the offer of help, right now I’m not sure there’s much you could do. The parents are saying that there’s not enough time (they’re teachers, too) and too much money!!! Oh well. i’ll keep working on them though.

If I can find airfare for less than $700 (ha!) I’m considering doing the 3-day to Amsterdam, but it’s all dependent on airfare, which is way too high right now.

  • Dera John & Heidi
It’s been a while since I posted a comment- I was on the Freedom in late August/Greece,Turkey & Italy- I since have booked a 3day to Ensenada/C.Paradise, a 5 day to Cabo/Ensenada on the Elation and just today put a deposit for the Spelndor /Mex Riviera cruise next May- My nurse friends and I are still going to the Carribean in Sept on the Conquest. So I guess I’m racking up my cruise miles… I would like to know who the CD’s will be for the Elation this May 30th, on the Conquest this Sept 7th and will you be on the Splendor next May ?? Hope your struggle with Mr Bells subsides soon, I had a close friend get it too. Lots of heart felt thoughts to you and Heidi.

  • John,

Am truly sorry about the passing of one of your guest. Please extend to the family that I am sure they are in the thoughts and prayers of the extended Carnival family. If I had my choise I would be set “Free” sail on the Freedom. Having a glass of fine wine and with my friends and family around.
On a lighter note, thank you for all your help on the past guest partys. I have informed Legendary
(not sure it will help). Also thank you for the information on the wine tasting. We will look into doing both of them. Hope you and Heidi join us at one. See you in 43 days. But who is counting.

  • As tears still fill my eyes, I wanted to stop by and send my condolences to the family who has lost a loved one.. Vacationing with family on a beautiful ship there is no doubt in my mind she was laughing & having a great time.. I’m sure she is still there in spirit to enjoy the rest of the cruise with her loved ones.. I know I’d sure beg for a little more time.. It’s beautiful to hear she touched you in her own special way. I’m sending BIG hugs of comfort to you & Heidi.. I’m sure you too touched her in a special memorable way that she has happily taken with her.. I too have lost a loved one recently and know just how precious every minute of everyday is..

  • Good evening Mr. Heald. I had all kind of things to say to you, probably funny, but as I sit here I really don’t know what to say except please give my condolences to the family of the woman who you said is an angel now in heaven. Reading your words this night I didn’t feel that you were the real Mr. Heald. Your heart is heavy tonight. Something is really bothering you. I will say a prayer tonight asking God to at least take the heaviness off your heart. I’ll be thinking about you my friend.Ciao

  • John

1st my condolences to the family- It is hard enough to lose a loved one, but to lose them while on a beautiful vacation, must make it even harder.

I mentioned to you about my husband getting a tattoo- he asked me to ask you will Carnival have any issues with him putting a Freddy Funship on his arm. I know it will be a conversational piece.
He is looking at getting it in the next few months (May or June)

Also any word on the Christmas ornaments?

Hope Mr. Bell is getting better & ready to disembark

Have a good night & take care
    Cheri

  • John and Heidi

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of a lady who obviously made an impression on you. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

You handled Mr. Stabilizer really well.

Can you tell me how old a baby needs to be so they can cruise. We may be raising a grandchild who is due to be born in September, long story. We want to cruise in January and will need to bring the baby possibly. Our daughter and her 3 children who live with us will also be going. Sure wish you were going to be our CD.

Hope M. Bell takes a hike really soon

    Lucinda

  • Thank You John and Heidi!!!

I wanted to say that first. I’m sorry to hear about the passenger who passed away, but she was having a wonderful time I am sure. Her family will be in my prayers tonight.

  • John, sending you and Heidi some hugs and positive thoughts. This has been a bad week- but hopefully she passed while doing something that she loved in cruising and was with people who she loved- it sounds like it. Deby

  • John -

No fooling around – our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

I can actually think of no better way to pass from this earth than enjoying my last days on a Carnival cruise – knowing you are surrounded by a HUGE loving, happy family would make the journey from this world to the next so much more comfortable, IMO.

God, welcome your newest angel and patron of the seas to your side this day.

    Amen

    John,
Our deepest sympathy to the family of the guest that passed away. It is always difficult to lose someone you love, I just hope they can find peace in the knowledge that she was happy and enjoying the last days of her life. It is a difficult situation for you to have to deal with too. Take comfort in the fact that you had the pleasure of making her smile one more time before she left this life for a better place.

Big Bear Hugs to you and Heidi!

  • Dear John,

I’m so sorry your heart is sad. I send my deepest condolences to the family of this newest angel. Its good she did not suffer and was with love ones enjoying a beautiful vacation.

You always amaze me at how well you adapt to all situations – From the passengers looking for something wrong to the people that come aboard with attitude and unhappiness, to a grieving family and all in-between – you have a heart of gold and the tolerance of saints.

Take Care – and tell Mr. Bell it’s time to walk the plank!! Captains orders :-)

    “Debs”

  • “A Floating City”

We don’t realize when we sail we are like a small town or city with over a 3,000 + population with it’s good and it’s bad. We also drag along a rather large “skyscraper” on it’s side and try to park it their harbors ( yeah, I know harbour ) I’m a Yank !

I had an old, dear family friend pass away onboard a ship (not Carnival) off the coast of South America. They wanted the male nurse/companion and my friend (now deceased) to leave the ship in a foreign country. The nurse was Mexican and did not want to leave the ship . They had a big “ta-do” with some official and were allowed to remain onboard til the ship reached the first U.S. port. Is that the usual M.O. ? This was in ‘97

Our sympathy to the family onboard the Freedom.

    Kathy and Paul

  • Two things today. You said that you want George Hamilton to play you on what I’m calling “Blog TV”. Who would play Heidi? Secondly, on a much more sombor note, my deepest condolences for the loved ones of the passeenger who passed away.

  • So sorry you had a bad week John. Thanks for all you do. Such a lot of work and caring.

Maybe because of you, we are trying a 5 day Mexico on the Elation next month. You lighten all our days.

  • Hi John
My thoughts and prayers for the family that lost their friend, confidant and loved one on the cruise. It is always difficult to lose a loved one, but being away will be even more difficult. Please give my condolences to them.
I can understand your feelings about Mr. Stabilizer. I don’t understand why the younguns of today take for granted that they can do whatever they want with no repercussions. The nerve of some.
Thank you for your response about the parking in Miami. I am still working on it because my hubby wants the bike safe. (Possibly will rent a self storage space for a bit) In the meantime, any more info you or anyone has about the parking at the Port of Miami would be appreciated.
Give my best to Heidi and take care till we meet again

    John,
Have you heard any news yet on Maria and how she is doing? It will be a week tomorrow, Friday, since her surgery. She is in my thoughts often and just wondered if you had heard anything. Hopefully she will be back blogging with us soon. And John, put a smile on your face–you gave that dear woman who passed the best days of her life probably. It is so sweet how compasionate you are! I know how much this has bothered you, as I could tell by the way you wrote todays blog how disturbed you were.

  • John, our sincere sympathy to the family onboard and at home who lost their love one. It also has to be difficult for the crew involved dealing with this unfortunate incident as this besets the ship, a sad time for all.
I read each day (a bit behind) and haven’t posted recently. Each day your thingy continues to touch me (hopefully everyone) as I read, silently taking emotional inventory in each human interest story you tell. So often you bring to life here, issues we all experience/deal with but seldom think of in the context you deliver. As always thanks for the humor we all really logon for. I don’t normally or like to post long messages and need to catch up. A lecture on what you could/should/need to do in order to expel Mr. Bell from your residence is something you probably well know by now. Wonderful that a guest (we all hope to learn more about) spent time (as would you) to help another in a positive way. Complainers/PIA’s will always exist, Spring Break is only once a year and each week you get to meet so many incredible everyday people who tip the scales in such a positive way if just to sit a few minutes with a cup of coffee and reminisce a wonderful past experience. Emotions the past few weeks have soared up and dramatically down for all on Big Ed’s crew, we are there for each other, what a family you and Ed spearheaded.
We wish you and the lovely Heidi some well deserved REST, REST and REST. Did I mention REST, yeah my redundancy, reinforcement was a lesson taught/learned long ago.
    Thank you John & Heidi,
    Cheers, Ray & Deb
P.S. subliminal message REST, REST, REST

  • John – I’ve read your blog from the very beginning however this is my first post. Carnival Elation got us hooked almost two decades ago. My husband’s parents, avid cruisers, continually told me how we would “LOVE” cruising and insisted we try just one. After hounding us for many years we finally took the plunge.

We live in California and chose a Mexican Riviera cruise in case we didn’t like it we could easily fly home….silly us. We did not want to leave that ship and my last minutes were spent with a certain Australian gentleman, avid Carnival cruiser, who had one less arm than you or I. We lamented the brutal slap back to reality that disembarkation poses and he gave us some very sage advice…the only cure is to book another cruise.

Well…17 cruises later here we are…we’ve celebrated birthdays, a 50th anniversary (my in-laws), my daughters going in to early labor while we were aboard Conquest (thank goodness for the internet cafe), a daughter’s wedding aboard where we all went on the honeymoon (the other guys with the wall…they’re great too), an engagement, my granddaughters first dip in an ocean on 7 mile beach at 10 months old…the memories go on and on.

My in-laws, now approaching their 80’s, say if it’s their time when they are on vacation understand that they are VERY fortunate to leave this world doing something they so enjoy and while they understand we would be sad at their leaving us…focus on the fact that it doesn’t get any better than that!!!

Your passenger today obviously spent their last hours enjoying life and isn’t that what it’s all about?

I know you are dealing with the family and you care about every person on your ship (even the dumb *&^% spring breakers) but you know it’s really a wonderful place to celebrate…even if it’s the after life.

Take care John….don’t let Mr. Bell get you down…it’s only temporary. Hold on to Heidi, your mum and dad, Allen, George Hamilton and have a Milky Bar for me when you get home.

    Sharon

  • Dear John,

Sending you and Heidi warm hugs. It sounds like you could use a few hugs, and I’m sure that Heidi could too. My prayers are going out to the family of the guest that passed away. I’m also praying that tomorrow will be a better day for you.

  • John,
Sorry to hear about the death, but at least he died doing something he enjoyed. By the way I wondered why they call you senor cruise director, you’re not really that old! Sounds like Mr.Stabilizer needed to meet Mr. Bigmikesfootinass.

P.S. I have to meet this Krysta.

  • Dear John,
I am so sorry about everything you have been dealing with, and now the death of a passenger. The fact that you feel so deeply is one of the things that makes you so very special to me and others as well, I’m sure. You
know I will continue to keep you and our other bloggers in my thoughts and prayers, adding to that the family of your passenger, gacruiser who lost her good friend and popcorngal who has lost a beloved pet.

Now, to our very own CAPTAIN “BLOOM”. How cool is that, to have the Captain posting on the blog! This makes you an official blogger now
Captain and you simply MUST join us on the 2009 Bloggers Cruise! Bring your family, lose the uniform and get down and party with the rest of us! Good lord, who ever thought our handsome and dignified Captain D’Aita would be referred to as “my dog, Captian Bloom”. I bet you’ve got some stories to tell about some of the characters you’ve met over the years, including John. Take care Captain and thank your for keeping us safe when we are in your care.

  • John, my dear, sweet, lamb-free friend…

My prayer and condolences to the family and friends of your passenger. Our lives have seasons and how we spend them and use them is our gift back to God and to each other. Your friend has reached a new season and is at peace in a new life. Ours is one of acceptance, understanding, and remembering all the wonderful moments… and grieving. Grieving is a wonderful gift, a wonderful process to work through to come to acceptance…

Your Mr. Stabilizer gave you part of your process, and your sharing it with us is part of ours. You humor is a gift, your writing is a gift, your whole being is a gift that we cherish, that I cherish… God bless you in your grief, and those who surround this passing.

    Regards,
    Lambie

  • Belle907,
Another friend who will be on the Splendor’s July 13th sailing. Thank you also for keeping track of the number of days. I think I will actually mark it in my calendar today, so I can keep track of the countdown. I will be glad when we can actually meet on the ship. It will be good to be able to put a face with a name.
    Have a good weekend
    Ruth

  • Hi John,
My deepest sympathy to the family of the lady, you, Heidi, & the rest of the Freedom crew. Her death is such a sad thing that it can’t help but affect everyone.

As for your reaction to Mr. Stabilizer………Granny Longingtocruise has a theory. Prednisone makes my temper go wild, exploding suddenly without any warning & maybe it affects you that way also. Not that you didn’t have a reason to be very angry with him, but you’re normally so very cool & able to handle any difficult situation without a having a spontaneous sudden reaction. It’s really way past time for Mr. Bell’s to take a hike back to France & I hope that he does so very very soon. Take care of yourself.

  • Hey again, John!

I have the perfect solution to some of the bloggers’ request for somehow getting the blog while on a cruise. At least it would work for all who are onboard with you. All bloggers would simply meet in your cabin and read along as you post. What do you think? You might need to keep your trousers on, though. And Heidi couldn’t sleep while you type as we would probably need the bed for sitting space.

On a more serious note, could something be set up, like a Power Point presentation, in one of the lounges (or some not much used room) on each ship and anyone interested could keep up with the blog that way?

Now that I think about it, it seems we have a serious addiction going on here if we can’t make it through three to 16 days without word from you. Wow, does that make you an illegal substance?

    Hope you’re feeling cheerier,

    Myra B.

It’s not our place within this world
Our time of leaving to choose
The way we go or when or how
Or loved ones we may lose.
I have but one request of the Lord
To most it may seem odd
I wish to sleep in the arms of the sea
And wake in the arms of God.

John, while the lady’s family will obviously be sad at loosing her, it sounds like she was an angel long before she left this world. I’ve said it on this blog before, so please humour me (spelt British) one more time–she was doing what she loved. She was already in Heaven; God just made it official.

  • John,
I am so very sorry to hear of the loss of which you spoke. It has been many yrs since I had the pleasure of cruising with you, but reading your blog has reminded me of your heart, and tho I know it is hurting now, I hope all the love your regular bloggers are sending you helps you to heal soon and you are once again able to share your humor with everyone, on the ship and on the blog.
My prayers and thoughs go with you, Heidi and most especially the family.

Dear John – I just happened upon your blog when I was searching for Jerry Goodspeed. My husband & I were on a Carnival cruise on the MARDI GRAS in the late 70’s and met Jerry & Sylvester. They were so much fun!! and we enjoyed the cruise. Also there was a comedian, Bob Goss. We’ve often wondered if those guys are still around and cruising………do you by any chance know how we could contact Jerry. If he is still on the ships, do you know which ones? Thanks so much for any info you may have.
