John,
Good luck as you start your adventure to a healthier life. I’m behind you 100% and will be your biggest cheerleader!
Princess Elaine, the quiet and single
Dear John,
Today is the start of your diet and wish you great success in your endeavour. I had an abdominal operation at the start of December which has limited my diet since then and I eat very little meat and no dairy products now (apart from Feta in my daily Greek salad) and have lost about 50 pounds since then although I eat very well with plenty of vegetables and fruit in my diet.
We are thinking of you both.
Rick and Joan
Thanks for the blog post Stephanie.
I am officially beginning my diet tomorrow and like you I will donate $5.00 for each of the 20 Lbs I “am” going to lose.
Good luck John and everyone else who is doing this. Together we are strong and we can win!
Sallie
Hi John, It’s finally here. June 1st and the beginning of your diet. I know you will be
successful in losing the weight. You will be so much healthier and your diabetes should be a lot easier to control.
It takes a lot of willpower, but I have faith that you
will succeed. We all want you healthy and around for many years to come.
When you and Heidi have a baby it will be a lot easier to keep up with the little one.
There are 10 of the Evil Krewe who have joined to diet with you. The total of weight they want to lose comes to 480 pounds.
We’re here cheering you on.
Don and Carolyn
John, Good luck with your diet. It will be difficult but you can do it and you will feel so much better. We all want you to stay in good health so “hang in there.”
Thanks Stephanie for reminding us of the big (bad choice of words) day.
Good Afternoon my friend Mr. Heald. Today begins a new life for the both of us. Since you said that you would start your diet on June the 1st I also did the same though it will be a challenge but if we work hard, we’ll succeed. Good luck my friend and when we meet in the future, we’ll look more handsome than we do now except healthier. Ciao until than.
Paul F. Pietrangelo
God Speed John Heald, Oh… and good luck too. You should try the diet I’m on, I’m calling it the starvation diet.

John,
Just stopping by to wish you well with the dieting and excercise program we are beginning today. I know this it not going to be an easy task but with each others support we should be able to succeed!
I weighed this morning at 143.6 and hope to lose between 15 and 20 lbs in the upcoming months. There are several of us that are dieting with you, we will keep each other on track!
WE CAN DO THIS :0)
John,
Good luck as you start a new healthy lifestyle.
On Friday, the other women and myself in the office decided we were going to eat healthy too.
So you are not alone as many of us are starting with you.
We are on your side, John, thankfully, and we know you can do this. It is all about finding foods that are good and good for you. This takes time, especially in dealing with diabetes, as we both must.
I would also recommend getting the GI Newsletter from Australia. It has excellent advice, information, and even recipies.
Of course, if you were trying really hard for a baby, we might not need to talk at all!!!
John:
I actually cheated a little and started walking 5 days ago.
I walk 2 miles (30 minutes) at least once a day.
Today I did it twice.
Hubby started this years ago and lost 40 pounds which he has kept off.
I bought some brand new walking tennis shoes.
Next I will need to get some cute outfits.
Leave it to a woman to figure out how to turn this into a shopping opportunity!!
At the age of 53 and starting menopause…I don’t think my body knows what a metabolism is any more…much less how to make it work to my advantage.
We will see how close to 20 pounds this gets me by February.
Linda (Mom of your friend DJ)
John, good luck! Remember that the first days are the hardest. The cravings and hunger WILL diminish after the first week – you can make it! Also, don’t worry too much about perfection – we all slip up now and then! Don’t sweat it and get back on track with your next meal. We’re all pulling for you!!
BLOGGERS: if you want to continue to encourage each other online, I’ve created a group for us on the weight loss support site PEERTrainer. PEERTrainer is free to join, and they don’t send spam.
Just go to http://www.peertrainer.com to sign up. Then, join our group: “Cruising with John to a healthy future”. I hope to see some of you there!
John – Best of luck! Don’t consider it a diet, but rather, a “lifestyle change.” My mom and I started our changes about a month (or so) ago and while I’m already down 13.6 pounds, she’s down 17! We’re all here with you!
15 pounds or kg or stones or ???
I am right along there with everyone dieting. I joined Weight Watchers (again!) in January and am down 10 lbs. It’s coming off a lot slower than it used to but I know eventually I will get to my goal.
Is anyone else out there on Weight Watchers too? Maybe we can compare notes/recipes, etc.
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!
Cindy
I’m in with you too John. I forgot about it for today but will be starting tomorrow. Goal is 20 overall. We’re all here with you!
John, I’m with you. Heidi you have the hard part of this life style change. We on the blog all support you both. I will be losing 25 lbs. by January 1st 2009.
Cindy56 – I am going to join weight watchers on line. Because of my location I can not go to meetings. Hope that the on line works. My e-mail is carolannjohnston@msn.com so e-mail me.
I will try to answer as often as I can.

I know how tough it is for us Healds to do the whole diet thing … you CAN do it and you WILL do it because if you put as much passion into this as you do your work then it will be a breeze. We are ALL behind you and joining in … me included …. one too many duck rolls, so when I see you at Christmas and I can’t wait, we can all put it back on in 3 days !
Good luck bro !

HI Johnand everyone;
Cindy56: I’m on Weight Watchers too. Click above and leave a comment, would love to hear from a fellow WW.
John, GOOD LUCK. I had made you an unofficial bet a few weeks back about wt. loss, and I want to make it official. For every lb. I lose, I could donate about a dollar. Told you I’d try to lose 45 lbs. by Feb.’09. I agree with some of the others, the wt. does not come off as easy as it used to ,but I will try my best. Diabetes is a tough thing, but WE are tougher!!!! Good Luck everyone…
SueMuller
We’re with you John. Think positive and you can do it.

ATTA BOY John
I am here and I am supporting you in your diet. I know you can reach your goal. Remember all that evil krewe are with you and supporting you,
Take care and shed shed shed ;D
Joan
John, good luck to you on your goal for a healthier life! Make the fitness staff on the Splendor your “new best friends” as I am sure they would have many tips and ways to help you with exercise and activities while on board.
I’m with you too!! I have 50 lbs. to lose and I’m determined!! Best of luck. Chris
Well John, I know I am late in posting – but, I am here to support and join. I am in for 40 pounds. My contribution will go to the American Diabetes Association. (My brother-in-law died from complications of being a diabetic, his son is now diabetic and my father-in-law is as well.) I will be looking here for support, as I’m sure many of you will as well.
HEY! With all the weight we are losing, will we get a discount on our next cruise….I mean we are doing our part to help save on the fuel cost….less weight = less fuel. Right?
Hugs,
Lori
Good Luck!
Hubby and I are joining the quest – we each have 40 lbs to lose
John;
While I am just a might older than you are, I also have the same medical problems. When I was a participant in the “ Bedtime story show” on the Freedom in may of last year, I was Dastardly, you had to help me up off the floor. Lets see if you and I can both loose some weight (no promises) and add years of aggravation to our wife’s lives.
Bob.
Good luck to you John and to everyone else!
I’m aiming for a 20 lb loss.
I’m in for 30.
John–I’m back on Weight Watchers after realizing my clothes don’t fit. Sensible, slow weight loss is the way to go. Eat healthy, lots of fruits and veggies, lean meats, easy on the starches (!)–I find sweet potatoes are a healthy, low calorie way to satisfy that urge. You also have to exercise somehow and rev up that metabolism. My shipboard credo was to never take the elevator and only the stairs–that and walking on excursions always kept my weight down. And don’t try to deny yourself completely–an occasional bite or two, if you can control it, of a sweet will will not hurt!
Good luck–Robin
Best of luck to you in your quest, John. You hsvr inspired me to try and drop the 10-15 extra pounds that I’ve been carrying around for much to long.
Bob
Alright, nothing makes suffering easier to bear than knowing others are suffering right along with you! So I’m with John! Started yesterday. I miss chocolate already….
Anyway, in hopes that the embarrassment of public failure will help keep me on the straight and narrow, I’ve started a blog to help keep me honest (http://divetrash.blogspot.com).
Egads.

Hey John:
I started my ‘weight loss’ program 2 weeks ago and have lost 3.6# – Thats $20 to Ovarian Cancer Research! With all the support here, we’re all going to do just fine! Good luck, remember it’s not so much WHAT you eat it’s portion size! Just stay away from the “junk”!
Sue K (in “the burgh”)
Go John Go!
I liked the idea another blogger had, so I am modifying my pledge to A Pound for A Pound – one pound Sterling for every pound you lose. So just remember John, every extra minute of exercise you do, and every scone you walk away from, is more money for the hospital AND more health for you. (Who knows, you might even pry Heidi’s eyes away from Todd English, at least for a little while!).
Just remember to do lots of different exercises, and START SLOWLY!!!
I have been on Jenny Craig since October and lost 14 pounds. I have another 14 to lose. It is a slow process. Charlie has been on it since January and is almost at his goal. He only has 5 pounds to go! I like Jenny because you don’t have to think as much as you do on WW. I obsessed way to much about food when I was on WW and now I don’t! Good luck John and everyone else!
Good luck everyone!
Hold your heads up.
Also doing Weight Watchers.
John & Everyone joining in the weight loss program. Remember . . . you may have an overall weight loss number in mind but is it best to make smaller more manageable goals with a reward at the end of each versus a large goal. If you are looking to lose 40 pounds reward yourself after every 5 or 10 pounds. This will give you small successes along your weight loss goal!
Good Luck Everyone. I hate dieting but sure like it when I weigh less. Fortunately summertime has lots of fresh fruits and vegetables (we have a huge garden) so hope to be 10 lbs less by August. And the garden work helps the exercise plan. Hope to see “less of everyone” on the Bloggers Cruise……….
John…
You’ll do it!!! I know you can do it!!! Find smaller target goals and celebrate all victories with us!!!
Since the first March, I’ve lost 20 pounds… went to the doctor today and he was very proud of me!!! (After 50, it’s harder… so DO IT NOW!!!)
I’m praying for you and with you!! Keep up a schedule of exersize and eat sensibly. If you cheat… so be it. Just stop as soon as you notice and get back on track… You’re doing this for YOU!!! No one else!! So you’re the only one who has to be pleased and proud. (We will be cheering you on… but you’re doing it for YOU!!!)
Till we see less of you!
Lambie
Best of luck John. Know that you’ll be successful. I’m joining right along with you. Hopefully we’ll see less of each other on Bloggers Cruise version 2.
Lisa Kilmartin
John, I know that you can do it. I’m looking forward to meeting a healthier you on the February Bloggers cruise.
Hi John
Good luck on your quest to lose the weight. I agree with your sister. You can do it, if you put as much into it as you do everything else.
I am also in for trying to lose 25-30lbs before the blogger cruise in Feb. It sure will be nice to see all the skinnies on the ship.
To the Krewe, I am behind you all the way. Let’s do it!!!
Gloria aka Sue
Hi there
Good luck to everyone who has decided to take the first steps on the road to a healthier lifestyle and better quality of life. I joined Slimming World in February and to date have lost 43 lbs! If I knew getting slim was so easy and so much fun I would have ditched the fast food years ago- and now I have been asked to become a consultant too.
diets dont work think of it as a change of lifestyle….good luck though
Hi John,
Not only do I follow the Weight Watchers plan, but I also work for them. I reached my goal in 1998 and have since gained about 15 lbs. back. I would like to blame cruising for the weight gain but that would be a lie. You can do this and I vow to lose my excess weight as well. Just take it one day at a time, one pound at a time. Slow and steady wins the race. Happy Healthy Eating.
Hi John,
I just wanted to tell you how excited we are about our cruise on the Splendor. We cruised on the 2nd cruise of the Freedom with you and Heidi. And when you told us about the Splendor and its ports, we promptly made notes to book this cruise. It will be great to see more of the world with you. I think we will be in 1107 on the august 6th cruise. I am still thinking about checking into that ship’s doctor position some day. Hope to get to talk with you in August.
Take care
John,One day, minute,or second at a time! Whatever it takes, stick with it.You will be pleased with your efforts and proud of your accomplishment! Good Luck Mate,
Best wishes
Butch
