Since the late 1800s, if a Dutch ship ended in "dam," it meant it was a passenger ship, and if it ended in "dijk," it meant it was a cargo ship. The Ryndam, for example, is named after the Rijn (Rhine) River. There is no city in the Netherlands called "Ryndam."
