Subject: 9272 – Meeting with John requestGood morning, John.
Please be aware that I had a gentlemen at the desk who was very upset that he could not “just call and speak with John,” He used to be a captain and he wanted to make a surprise for his wife, but he refused to tell what exactly was the point of his meeting with you… so if it will be possible to give him a call during the day? Thanks a lot and my best regards,
Natalya Mitko
Purser
Well, it’s another cruise and it took just one day to find another colorful character. As you will see from the e-mail above “Mr. I Used To Be A Captain” came to the information desk after midnight and was surprised and upset that Natalya the purser would not call me. ……………good job because I was fast asleep, having a wonderful dream about Catherine Zeta Jones who was wearing a Panama Jack hat…………that’s all she was wearing by the way.
So, I called the captain this morning at 9:10 am and guess what? ……. I woke him up…………oops……….and when I apologized he barked “Call me back after 11 am” and hung up the phone ………… I was stunned.
Well, the problem now was that at 9:30 am I had my Morning Show and then the Travel and Adventure talk for Warnemunde and Tallinn. This meant that I would probably miss him when I called next …………. and that would only make him even grumpier…………..however, I didn’t need to worry because he found me.
Following on from my travel talk I host a Q & A. This, as you may know, is done in the style of an open microphone session so everyone can hear the questions and answers. Usually people ask about tours, how to get places on your own, etc., and things were going very well until half way through when I met the captain.
Stephanie the assistant cruise director gave him the microphone and this is how the conversation went…………Oh by the way, I always ask people to say their name and where they are from…………anyway, word for word, here is the conversation.
CAPTAIN I am captain _______ and I am from the United States of America.
JOHN Which state, captain?
CAPTAIN That is none of your concern
JOHN Oh, OK, were you a ship captain?
CAPTAIN No, I am a retired airline captain and I tried to speak to you last night but the lady at the desk refused to put me through to you.
JOHN My apologies sir but with respect it was after midnight
CAPTAIN I expect you to be available to me 25 hours a day — that is your job.
AUDIENCE MEMBER Ask a question or sit down!
Now, at this point I had to decide quickly what to do because Captain Rude was now starting to upset the other 200 plus in the room. So…
JOHN Indeed sir, my apologies would you like to have a chat with me after the Q&A has finished in 20 minutes.
CAPTAIN RUDE No, I can tell you that my wife and I are having our anniversary of 42 years and last year on the Royal Caribbean ship the cruise director arranged for us to eat at the Captain’s table and I want the same to happen here.
AUDIENCE LAUGHTER PLUS A FEW GROANS
JOHN OK, sir, just allow me to answer the other guests questions and I will come and chat with you.
I am sure he would have liked to have said more but luckily Stephanie was ahead of the game and grabbed the microphone from Captain Rude’s hand.
I carried on with Q & A answering questions about Berlin and the Brandenburg Gate but doing so on full automatic mode because all I could think about was how after one day Captain Rude could be so…….well………rude. No, please, no thank you, publicly advertising another cruise line and doing so in the most abrupt manner.
So, after the Q & A I went and sat next to him in the Spectacular Lounge. I explained that Captain Pagano does not always host a table and when he does that the guests chosen to sit with him are ones pre-ordained by our Miami office ……………. oooops ……………. shouldn’t have said that as I was now given a wonderful close up of Captain Rude’s index finger which was now wagging like a rabid dog’s tail in front of my face.
I just sat there………….watched his finger………..listened to him go on about how the cruise director of the RCI ship was better than me and how Carnival should honor his many years as an airline captain.
Eventually he stopped to take a breath and that was my chance …….. I grabbed the nearest object I could find which was my microphone and I beat him over the head with it while singing “happy days are here again”…………………………Except, it was just a dream and instead of using the microphone as a weapon I apologized again and promised him that I would do everything I could to make his anniversary a special one.
I asked him when exactly it was…………answer: September 28 ………. umm….in three week’s time…….bloody hell, it wasn’t even this cruise.
I offered him my hand but bizarrely he refused to shake it and walked off…………..talking to himself.
Oh Joy.
And so later today I will deliver a fruit basket and champagne to the guest’s cabin with a note from the captain wishing them a happy anniversary………..it’s all I can do for now as the captain’s table is already full……….I have a feeling it won’t be good enough though and I will hear more from Captain Rude in the days ahead.
He has been an exception, though, and I have met so many people who were with me on the Carnival Liberty and Carnival Freedom and, of course, there are many bloggers here with me, as well.
We have Dave and Jo Myerly whose name you will all recognize from the blog. They have also cruised many, many times and are proudly wearing their 2008 Bloggers Cruise T-shirts. It is wonderful to have them on board and once again I am amazed that they have booked not only this cruise but also the following 12-day Med cruise, as well. Dave and Jo brought me a beautiful card from Ray McTeague who sailed with us recently……Ray, thank you so very much for all the kind words.
We have my old friends Robert and Suzann Schenider sailing on their 42nd Carnival Cruise. They have sailed with me 31 times and for the last 10 years have planned their vacation around which ship I am on. Robert lost his father this year and many of you sent condolences through the blog for which he wanted me to say thank you. It’s great to see them both here once again and I am humbled by the fact that they choose to sail with me so often.
Suzann and Robert brought Heidi and I a T-shirt made especially for this voyage.
Next up we go to Australia and proof positive that the blog thingy has people reading it from all over the world. First we have Mal and Alexis who are also on back-to-back cruises and brought me a sketch of ………..well, have a look.
So, Heidi has now taken great pleasure in calling me the Blogfather all day and the sketch will be framed and hung at home. I loved the sugar-free jelly beans and the key to the doghouse……….brilliant.
Staying in Australia, we have two lovely ladies and blog fans, Suzanne and Lisa, who brought us two little fluffy thingies from Down Under. Heidi of course has been ooooing and ahhhhhing all day. How wonderful of them to think of us and carry them from the other side of the world.
Last year we met Joe and Peggy on the Carnival Freedom while they were celebrating their honeymoon. They became great fans of the blog thingy and decided to come back again and see us on the Carnival Splendor even though they have been to all the ports before on a Holland America cruise.
They just wanted to sail with me again and words cannot explain how brilliant that makes me feel.
They also brought me some sugar-free treats from Buffalo, New York including mustard, wing sauce and syrup……………..yummy.
Then we have Sharon Tieman who completely ignored me and brought a gift for Heidi………….a hoodie thingy. It’s beautiful and comes from Alaska where she is from. Here is a very happy Heidi holding her gift.
These gifts are staggering and even more so is the fact that the people have flown with them. Then, of course, there is the fact that they have spent time and money and have come back to see us yet again…..I will send them gifts and thanks for making our day brighter.
Here are some amazing photos taken by Heidi as we went through the locks in Amsterdam last voyage.
Just before I slap on today’s cruise director interview I need to apologize to George Solano. Some how the message I wrote after the interview went missing and I just realized. So, I want to say that George is one of the funniest men I have ever met and nobody — and I mean nobody — cares more about the guests than George. He is a great chap and as George would say……..” I lowe you mon.”
Here is someone else I love as do many of you, Miss Shawn Bussey. She and I go way back to the time she was a youth director onboard. Now, she is one of our most senior cruise directors and someone I am proud to call a friend. Here she is
1. Can you tell us which ship you currently are on and when you are due to leave?
I am on the Legend until September 7. Tina Noble will be taking my place when I leave for vacation and then I’ll be back on the Legend on November 2.
2. Carnival cruise directors come from very diverse backgrounds. Some have entertainment experience, some, like me, have none. Can you tell us about your background and how you ended up with the best job in the world?
I sailed on the Carnival Sensation for spring break of my senior year of college back in 1994 (Florida State University). I thought this life looked like a blast so I applied to work onboard during the summer in Camp Carnival. I fell in love with cruise ship life. I finished my master’s degree in special education in May 1995 and in June 1995 I was back onboard … and never left. Fourteen years later I am still happily doing the truly best job in the world!
3. Before we talk about some of your favorite parts of the job, lets talk about the areas behind the scenes……….the things guests never see. Tell us about what a cruise director does when he or she is not on the stage but keeps you just as busy.
We simply do not stop. The wonderful thing about ship’s life is that it is fun and always changing. There is a never-ending line of surprises that arise each day. Whether it is a change in the Capers and show line up (weather changes or a fly-on missing the ship) or a behind-the-scenes entertainment department issue (staff member ill, etc.), there is always something. I love that about our job. We never, literally, have a dull moment!
4. A cruise director is happiest when performing or being with guests. Can you tell us two activities or events that you would call your signature items………events that make you stand out from the crowd
I do not believe that I have two signature items that I can call all my own. I would say my signature is more my energy and happiness during the events I get involved in. I feel so alive when I get to be in front of the crowds – whether answering their questions during up close and personal – or hearing them laugh when I do something silly. It is so very true what you say – we are happiest when we are performing. I could be sick as a dog behind the scenes, but once the show lights come on, I feel no pain! :O)
5. What has been your most challenging moment as cruise director so far? When we have a challenge in itinerary or in the world (9/11 or Hurricane Katrina). Keeping a smiling face with the guests and measuring how to keep them happy is a very lonely feeling at times.
6. And, your most rewardingWhen it works and they give you a hug of thanks.
7. On your current ship can you tell us about your itinerary and can you recommend one must do excursion from each port of call
We go to Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize, and Roatan.
Grand Cayman – you must swim with the stingrays. It will knock your socks off!
Cozumel – 1. Mayan Ruins of Tulum (breathtaking) or 2. Swimming with the dolphins
Belize – Cave Tubing – hands down the most extraordinary excursion
Isla Roatan – 1. Pirates, Birds, & Monkeys (you get to hold monkeys!) or 2. Dolphin Tour – from the beach or 3. Tabyana Beach – great snorkeling!
8. Why, in your opinion is Carnival…………..the world’s most popular cruise line
We have something for everyone! I love seeing generation families coming to sail with the kids and the grand parents all having a great time. We have games, shows, and fun planned for every interest and personality at every moment of the day! Everyone can run around doing their favorite things and then get together at dinner to laugh and bond over what they did.
9. Is there a ship in the fleet you would love to be cruise director of that you have yet to be so and what port of call would you like to visit that you have not so far in your careerI have to say I am happy where I am right now on the Legend. A port that I would like to visit would be Spain.
10. Every CD has a story to tell from their time onboard. What’s your most recent funny, sad or inspirational story you can share with usMy favorite story actually happened when I was a wee social host on the Sensation. I was standing at the Captain’s Cocktail Party door and an elderly man was lingering in the doorway. I asked him if he was waiting for someone, and he told me that his wife had recently passed away. They had already booked this cruise so he decided to come in honor of her, and now felt so lost without her. He walked away with the most heartbreaking look. I was crushed. I had his cabin number and went into the gift shops where we had these teddy bears that sang songs when you pressed their hand. I bought one and had it delivered to his cabin that night with a note saying “so you won’t be alone.” I never saw him again for the rest of the cruise. YEARS later I was standing on the Lido Deck hosting deck party when this man in a wheelchair came up to me … he said “I have been cruising and looking for you for years to thank you for my teddy bear!” He had a present for me that he carried on every cruise – a watch so I would remember our time. I was over the moon!
11. Finally………….pick a Cruise Director table ……………..you are hosting a table at dinner onboard the carnival Dream………what’s for dinner .…..and who do you invite.APPETIZER

The hardest part of the day was talking tow Mr. and Mrs. La Seaux and Mr. and Mrs. Cole from New Orleans. Both couples are desperate to go home but the airport is, of course, closed and the city is being evacuated. I sat with them this afternoon and then arranged for them to have free phone calls to make sure their families are safe and their homes secure.
Mr. and Mrs. Cole have a son who cannot leave because he is a police officer and they are very worried about him. Both families lost their homes during Katrina…………………both families have rebuilt them………….both fear they will lose them again.
There is little to say to someone when they are 3,000 miles away from home. I tried to comfort them, I tried to reassure them but both couples have already decided that they will once again be homeless in a few days time. They explained to me about how New Orleans is shaped like a bowl and that the even with the new defenses only a certain amount of water can be pumped out……………….again, all I could do is promise our support. I gave them my ship’s phone number so they can call me at anytime…..I only wish I could do more.

August 30, 2008
Dear Carnival Guest:
We want to thank you for choosing Carnival for your vacation. We have an exciting cruise planned for you aboard the Carnival Liberty. We also want to provide you with some information about our itinerary for this cruise.
There is Hurricane Gustav, which is brewing in the Western Caribbean… Due to Gustav’s forecasted track, we will reverse the order of the ports of call. We will, therefore, call on Ocho Rios on Monday (arrive 9:00 AM; depart 5:00 PM); Grand Cayman on Tuesday (arrive 8:00 AM; depart 4:30 PM) and Cozumel on Thursday (arrive 8:00 AM; depart 10:00 PM).
We are sorry for having to reverse the itinerary for this cruise; however, these changes enable us to navigate the ship in the safest and most comfortable conditions. Rest assured, my number one priority is the safety of our guests and crew.
Our shore excursions staff will be able to assist you with any shore excursion questions.
Most importantly, we are looking forward to having you sail with us this cruise. The Captain, officers, staff and crew are dedicated to providing you with a great cruise vacation.
Sincerely,
Ruben Rodriguez
Executive Vice President – Marketing and Guest Experience
The most important fact is that Carnival executives are manning the command center in Miami and nothing — nothing — is more important than the safety of the guests, the crew and the ship itself. I will let you know more information as soon as I receive it.

Well, it looks like the government are going to be busy again and talking of that I have been reading a little about Governor Palin ……………now, don’t worry, I am not going to get all political and tell you that one party is better than the other.
It’s just that I find this lady fascinating. It seems that she is a member of the NRA which apparently stands for the Armed Republican Army and has something to do with Charlton Heston and a cold hand. I also see that see is working with the British Government to…………and I am not making this up………..help re-introduce the wolf to the highlands and mountains of bonnie Scotland.
Apparently with devastating and quiet savagery, the countryside is being destroyed by a million-strong herd of marauding deer. Surveys have shown their numbers are spiraling out of control and that they’re now tearing through crops and woodland like a pack of starving locusts.
Worse still, deer were responsible last year for 4,000 road accidents in Scotland alone. Ten people died, pinned to their headrests by those antlers after the animal came through the windscreen. Not a nice way to go.
On one stretch of road near Ben Nevis a deer is apparently hit once every three days. He must be getting awfully fed up with it by now.
As a result, the UK government is going to great lengths to point out that the deer is a fine animal, and must not be viewed as a pest or a nuisance. But that hundreds of thousands must, nevertheless, be shot in the face.
However, that apparently is cruel and unusual so they contacted Governor Palin to ask her help in repopulating the Alaskan wolf to Scotland. There’s no doubt that a pack of wolves gallivanting around the Highlands would keep deer numbers down, and this would save the trees and crops. But I can’t help wondering what else Mr. Wolf might eat.
In the alpine region of France a pack of just 50 wolves does its level best to keep lamb off the menu in most local restaurants, and we see a similar problem in Sweden, where wolves, tired of eating deer, are helping themselves to pretty well anything that moves.
Humans apparently have nothing to worry about because in the last hundred years there hasn’t been a single recorded case of a person, or even a part of a person, anywhere in Europe or Alaska, being eaten by a wolf.
Governor Palin allegedly stated that in Alaska humans and wolves live happily together. True, but that’s because in Alaska Governor Palin and her citizens are armed with a .44 magnum. In the UK, however, we’re not allowed to walk around with more dangerous than a pointed stick, so I suspect the reintroduction of wolves would mean the odd rambler would probably be devoured.
Anyway, I think we should repopulate the wolf back into the British countryside because everyone wins. The government keeps deer numbers down, we will be able to drive faster on the roads without wondering if Bambi is about to come flying through my windshield, and people with beards and open-toe sandals who spend the weekend driving 20 miles an hour to get to the countryside and who are the same people who throw eggs at my Range Rover because it kills Polar Bears will go rambling and get eaten by a wolf………..see it’s a win win.
Goodnight
Your friends
John and Heidi

John, there are a couple of things I don’t understand.
Why does Captain rude think he is more important than Mr Bread the baker or Miss Care the nurse?
And it would seem to me that sending a fruit basket and a bottle of champagne will make him think his actions are acceptable.
They are not acceptable in any way ,shape or form and what he really needs is a quiet word in his ear and a visit to the ships Surgeon to have the stick removed from his posterior.
The more I read your blog the more I think you deserve a medal. I wouldn’t last five minutes.
Why don’t you give him a golden Splendor trophy from the cupboard an add an inscription – ‘It’s nice to be important, but it’s important to be nice’
Don

Steph, please have John reply. Danny wants to know if Carnival has any plans of having a ship going to Egypt in the near future? We want to see the Pyramids and want to go on Carnival, not Princess.

John,
I think you should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Oh my gosh…….the things you have to put up with from passengers. If you remember, you woke me up the first morning at sea also, however, I did not ask you to call me back after 11:00. I was actually glad to have a chance to talk to you!
I loved the pictures from Amsterdam. Jim and I were eating dinner on the Lido that night. We had gotten the stirfry.(Yummo!)
I am sure the families from New Orleans appreciated the time you spent with them. It is so ironic……it has not been that long. Maybe Gustav will go a different direction and they will be spared.
I will try to check the blog during the week…no promises…take care and tell Heidi hello.

John -
I totally agree with Don Gibson – you are an enabler. You enable these stupid individuals by trying to be overly nice, rather than telling them the truth about their overdeveloped sense of importance.
Oh, I forgot, you are the Cruise Director – you are not allowed to be honest with idiots like this one.
BTW – what makes an Airline Captain so important? I mean, all he managed to do is his job, which means he didn’t crash and burn.
There is one way that I disagree with Don. He does not need to see the doctor to get the stick removed. He clearly suffers from Cranial – Rectal Syndrome and needs to get his head out of his . . . well, you get the picture.
If, by chance, you have another run in with Captain High and Mightyly Rude, ask him if he “was available 25 hours a day for his passengers” while doing his job. Would he have stopped what he was doing to answer the foolish request of one of his passengers?
Finally, tell Heidi she is as lovely as ever and I still don’t get what she sees in you

Urgent Please Reply
Hi John, I have been reading the blog since the beginning but this is my first post. Because of you and your blog I have just booked my first Carnival cruise!! I will be sailing October 26 on the Triumph.I have a few questions that i couldn’t find answers to on CM or CC boards. What upgrades will be done on the Triumph whe she goes into dry dock? Will they add the big movie screen? Any chance they will add a supper club? I really wanted to try that. Also, who will be the cruise director? There is a large thread on CC about which piano players will be on which ships but no one seems to know who will be on the Triumph after dry dock.It seems the piano bar is the place to be as everyone loves it! Does the Triumph have 2 shows at night or just after the late dinner seating? So many questions but for me planning is half the fun. Thank you John for your help and for your wonderful blog. Maybe next year I will see you on the Liberty! The best to you and Heidi.
A new Carnival convert,

John:
Here we are in Galveston. (actually Texas City)
Our Ecstasy cruise will be leaving on Wednesday for a 3 day cruise to nowhere.
We are moving to the Habor House on Pier 21 in Galveston in the morning. This is our first trip to Galveston, so we are looking forward to getting to stay at Harbor House for a couple of days. We are also thankful that all we missed out on was a couple of ports and that our home will still be high and dry back in Memphis….FAR away from Gustav.
There is a wonderful lady (Cheryl~Cruise Critic Seauonboard) who is also sailing with us on Wednesday. Her son has some similar issues as DJ and are the same age, so they have been emailing for months. They are also staying at the Harbor House, so they will have a chance and become best friends before the cruise!
So sorry to hear about Captain Rude. Proof positive that ability and money do not equal “class”.
I am glad to hear the audience told him to ask a question or sit down. There are at least 200 people who now know first hand that he is a idiot!!
We have sailed with Shawn twice (once to Alaska). She is a hoot!!!
My heart goes out to the couples from New Orleans. Hopefully it will pull West and go up a less populated area and spare New Orleans.

Dear John, Will we, the bloggers, be able to read the blog in the library while we are on the Sensation. Is anyone printing it off so the bloggers can keep up with what you are doing while we are out at sea?
Incidentally my birthday and our anniversary will be celebrated while we are on the Holiday 9/22 – 9/27. Now I don’t want to eat at the Captain’s table, I want to have you and Heidi dine with us. Now what sort of temper tantrum do I have to throw, in order to get my preferential treament….. I mean after all we will become VIP’s in 3 more cruises on the BC2
You can just call me Mrs S Nob then!!!!!!

The best way to deal with captain rude is to some how get him to talk with the two couples who believe they are about to lose thier homes for the second time in 3 years to a huricane. Maybe then he won’t think that a spot at the captains table is as important as he thinks it is. You could also let everyone know that the roof over the pool is going to remain open this week, because with it closed it can not contain captain rude’s enourmous head.

Hi Blogfather: I guess you forgot a few lessons your Mum surely taught you. The pictures which had you scowling when you had the drawing of you. I’m sure your Mum told you your face would “freeze that way” if you kept doing that.
Or were you thing of “Capt. Rude” when you were scowling….
August 31st, 2008 at 7:29 pm
John,
I am glad you are a cruise director and I am not. Capt Rude, a former, emphasis on former airline captain and he expects you to bend over backwards. I bet you he is probably treated like dog poo on his former airline and all airlines for that matter. But then he compares the other cruise line to yours is wrong. Anyway you are a better man and that is what really matters. Enjoy the remaining cruises and keep smiling and dreaming with Zeta.

Hey John,
This is my first posting, but after reading for quite some time I cannot resist any longer. You truly are amazing, the people you deal with are so diverse in there ignorance. As an aircraft mechanic here in the states, I feel you pain in dealing with CaptainRude. Wish I could be there to ground him for you. What do you call a hundred pilots in a basement? “A whine cellar”. Truth be told, there are very few of these guys in the industry. Just let him win some of the battles and he will walk away feeling important. We look forward to meeting you on the September 11th cruise, I promise no complaints here.

To your passengers from NO:
I know that it has to be terrifying to be so far away from your home in NO with another hurricane coming that way and a son that will be in harms way. Our prayers are going out for you and for God to put His loving arms around your son and protect him while he is doing his duty as a police officer for New Orleans.
To all of the people who live on the coastline as well as NO,
We are sending prayers your way that the hurricane doesn’t do the damage you experienced when Katrina came thru.
May God take care of each and everyone of you so there are no lives lost. Things can be replaced but lives and loved ones can not.

Hi John and Heidi,
You may want to add Amsterdam to your list for pick pocketing. My friend actually caught someone with his hand in his front pouch where he kept his wallet and passports. The guy actually got it unzipped and proceeded to get his hand inside before my friend even noticed. My friend actually picked the guy up by the neck and dropped him down. The guy said sorry and took off. My friend was so shaken up by this that we decided not to stay in town and we took the tour bus back to the ship. It is such a sad world out there where you have to have eyes in the back of your head all the time.
Glad to hear your physical went fine and you got to spend time with you mum and dad. Heidi should have a fantastic time with her mum this week. Say hi to her from me.
Take care and relax alittle..

So nice to see the interview w/Shawn. Guess I can retract my question from a couple of days ago. I was afraid she had left the company when she left the Spirit.
I think we will have to look for a Legend sailing so we can experience Shawn again. We’ve really enjoyed her from our first Carnival cruise when she was a social host to two other cruises as CD.
Thanks, again, for sharing her comments with us.

HEIDI:
I have a Pink Alaska hoodie, just like yours! I got mine on the first Carnival Cruise I took. May 17,2006 to Alaska. Hubster, Randall and I went for our 25th Wedding anniversary. Shawn Bussey was the CD on the Spirit. She along with several other Carnival Employees hooked us on cruising! We now have our 9th Carnival Cruise booked.
I love my Pink Alaska hoodie just as much as we love cruising.
John:
sorry about Mr. Rude Captain. I can’t believe that people can be so self centered. ( Well I can believe it, but it really makes me sad).
To Everyone who is in the path of Gustav, prayers are being sent.

Blog Father….. still can’t stop laughing on that one…. plus the Gov Palin NRA….. You are always good for a laugh John… Please Let the Two Families from NOLA thaht our thoughts are with there families still in Harms way. My wife is a 911 dispatcher her in Mass. and I work part time doing the same thing. ( I used to dispatch ful time, but gave it up when I got My Masters License. BTW I meet my wife at some 911 training we where taking about 10 yrs ago) Speaking of Being a Captain, it is people like MR Air plane driver that give people ( who work hard for thier title) a bad name. I mean Please, Yes he had to go to school and learn to drive the Plane and all that but what other job do you know where you work only 10 days a month??? thats what most pilots work….
anyway I also wanted to comment on the pics of you , you are looking good. and it looks like you are starting to show the weight loss.
Keep upi the good work,
Hi to Heidi Mom and Heidi ,

Sounds like Mr. Rude needs to eat dinner with Mrs. Snob and Fred and his Catatonic wife. Sorry John hang in there some people no matter where they are think they are the true center of the universe. Hang in there man!!!!
August 31st, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Do you ever have a cruise where everyone isn’t rude? Geez, this guy needs to walk the plank!
Ok, the news and weather were just on and looking like it will strike in the same area as Katrina–again. Not good news. News said “ships” are experiencing 36 foot waves–YIKES! I don’t know what kind of ships but there are a lot of cruise ships in the gulf trying to dodge this storm.
Another one to go up the east coast right behind and more behind that one. This could be a rough couple weeks rerouting ships away from hurricanes.
Great photos and gifts and you are so deserving of the attention!

Hi John, I hope there’s a way that the cruise can somehow (or somewhat) comfort Mr. and Mrs. La Seaux and Mr. and Mrs. Cole. I honestly don’t know what to say regarding the situation, except that hopefully when they call their families back home in a few days the news won’t be as bad as they anticipate…
On another note, Shawn’s teddy bear story was pretty cool. Talk about a small world.
And finally, Scotland should just move Wolves from Wolverhampton to the highlands if they want to clear out the deer population, since England’s closer to Scotland than Alaska… yeah, I’ll go get my coat now.
September 1st, 2008 at 12:44 am
I must disagree with Don — it’s not a stick that Retired Captain of The Universe has shoved up his posterior, it’s something far larger. The fact that he can still talk with his head up there is indeed impressive.
As much as I admire your efforts to leave every passenger with a good impression and memories of the cruise, this man was delusional and disrespectful and undeserving of further acknowledgment regarding the matter.
At least he made a fool of himself in front of his fellow passengers, can you imagine the nudges and whispers going on any time they see him on board? His wife must be mortified and I feel sorry for his dining room tablemates.
September 1st, 2008 at 7:36 am
Poor John,
You evidently are a magnate for unreasonable passengers. I certainly don’t envy you. I’d love to see Captain Obnoxious walk the plank. Or maybe an overnight in the brig would damper his importance a bit.
Please tell your New Orleans passengers we are thinking about them & wishing them the best.
September 1st, 2008 at 8:04 am
Captain Rude is truly one of a kind – at least one could hope so. I know you need to be nice to people and try to smooth ruffled feathers, etc. but must you reward such obnoxious behavior? That guy needs to be knocked down a peg or two. If he continues to be rude in front of the audience someone will take care of that.
I feel for the couple from New Orleans. We were on the Liberty when Hurricane Wilma was approaching Punta Gorda just a year after Charlie destroyed so much of our town. Everyone on board was most concerned and tried to help keep us informed. Fortunately for us the storm hit a few miles south of our home. I pray that the couple on board now will get home to an intact house and a safe family. Jeri

Hi John and Heidi,
Bad Luck again John, you got another Mr. rude on board. Sorry you have to deal with some persons like him again.
As their aniversary is weeks ahead just do ignore him. Those people always want to get free stuff
complaining loud enough. Do stopp them!!!
Hello Heidi I do think yout T might be a “little” overzised.

Captain Rude… that’s what happens to you if you spend your entire career like a parrot repeating every word Air Traffic Controls says. ATC: “United 199, turn left heading two-niner-zero.”
Captain Rude: “Freakin’ Roger, turning left heading two-niner-zero, United one-niner-niner.”
BTW, did you guys ever figure which morons cut up those beautiful leather chairs I was planning to sit in?
September 1st, 2008 at 11:18 am
John,
Looking forward to 9/23, seeing you and Heidi, and doing the Grand Mediteranean all over again. Captain Rude provides a lesson for us all, expectations may not coincide with reality and any difficulty in dealing with the difference may hinder YOUR ability to enjoy YOUR vacation. I think that’s what I like about Carnival, the adventure without too much uncertainty, reliable services you can count on.
In regards to the wolves, the whole time I’m thinking “An American Werewolf in London” (the first movie in 1981). That was a classic and I think it could be a new excursion called “Werewolf Park.” We could offer it to Captain Rude as a consolation prize?

Hi John,
Thanks for the update on Shawn. We had the pleasure of having her as a CD for two different cruises in the same year. She actually remembered us which I thought was amazing with how many people you must meet.
Cheers!

Oh lucky you John, now you have Captain Rude on the ship for the next 12 days, does it ever end? I will bet you good money that Captain Rude will want the Republican Convention on the big screen the rest of the week.
Heidi’s pictures as you went through the locks in Amsterdam are just amazing. I am sure she is so happy to have you back home.
BTW, did you get my note on the Raspberry Blog – Part 1? I need you to reply, just let me know if it can be done. Thanks John, whatever you can do for us will be appreciated.
Keep smiling John.

John – of course you should do something special for the retired airline captain.
I am sure he would be flattered to give a lecture on his special subject to the passengers.
Just advertise it in the Carnival Capers as “Airline Q&A – ever been delayed? ever had bags lost? ever been “bumped” off a flight? – come and meet the man responsible……
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 am
John, I think that people like Capt. Rude, Mrs. S Nob and the Mortician were put here on earth to make us appreciate the rest of the folks around us! I’m sorry to hear so many seem to come your way!
Shawn is a WONDERFUL CD! She was on the Spirit when we went to the Mex Riv this past March and she was awesome. I was a little disappointed when she said she was leaving the Spirit since we were planning on booking it for Alaska. I was however happy to read all your interviews with other people (like Bubba) who are crew members and CDs and the like. I’m starting to think that Carnival just doesn’t hire any people that aren’t awesome!

Wow! Feel free to slip my reply under Captain Rude’s door…
Last March my husband (Also an Airline Captain of 30 years) my two kids and I took my parents (paid 100% by us) on the beautiful, spectacular Carnival Freedom for a wonderful week (it was your last week aboard).
What I never told you or even considered informing you or the captain was that my parents were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary!!!! You see, we are not flamboyant, self centered people that believe our parents are the only ones to have ever celebrated their 50th anniversary on one of your magnificent ships! Spending time together is all we needed or expected. Perhaps Mr. Rude has to feed his ego or mend his relationship with his wife with outside attention…good luck Mr. Rude!
Airline Captains are simply glorified bus drivers these days. My husband is a fabulous pilot that never once introduces himself as “captain”. He loves his job and is grateful to have been with the same airline for 30 years. However, he knows that if he someday can’t fly the airplane, someone else can and will.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Hi John/Heidi:
I really enjoyed Shawn’s interview today and it seems like she’s in a great position.
Those pictures of the Amsterdamn are locks are so amazing. I can’t get over the margin of error that the ship has to deal with.
Thanks for another great blog and hope things are going ok.
Take care!
David

So Mr. Captain Rude was celebrating his 42nd anniversary. Mrs. Captain Rude is the one who should be congratulated for putting up with his obnoxiousness for so long. If anyone deserves to sit at the ship captain’s table, it’s Robert and Suzann Schneider. By the way, I looked it up. They are on their 45th cruise (over 14 years). I have an idea: seat Mrs. Captain Rude (sans Mr. Obnoxious), Robert and Suzann Schneider at Captain Pagano’s table and make Mr. Captain Rude sit at the “card table” with the other brats. He doesn’t deserve adult company. Oh, and feed him airline food. That, he deserves!
