You'll Never Walk Alone

September 11, 2008 -

John Heald

Today marks the seventh-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
We extend our thoughts and prayers to all who lost their lives, as well as their families,
friends and loved ones.

When you walk through the storm
Hold your head up high,
And don’t be afraid of the dark.
At the end of the storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Many of us remember that day without having suffered the loss of someone special, but we were all touched. The fear caused by those madmen is still in the background. So little respect for life. Bless the memories of all the victims, and let’s not forget the survivors: families that had to go on in life without their loved one.

    Dear John and Heidi,

Fantastic picture yesterday of you together.

Thanks John for your thoughts and prayers on this day. I am so upset that there are hardly any flags flying today. I drive 20 miles to work and only saw approximatly 10 flags flying. (if that) It is so sad to see so many americans go on their merry way today and can not even take the time to take a moment of silence out of their busy day to pray for everyone who died that dreadful day or a minute to hang the flag.

    God bless America…

    Pam

  7. Stephanie and John,
This day is special to me in many ways, that I won’t go into here. But I thank you for honoring all those lost on 9/11. But please don’t forget all those who survived and those who rescued so many lives on that day.

    Thanks John,

Images of that day never leave my mind. Maybe that’s because I live in New York, but I can never forget what happened and the incredible sadness I felt. And still feel.

I will never forget that day, the sky was a perfect blue and then that beautiful sky was filled with smoke and flames caused by the acts of very evil people.

We will never forget what happened and we will never surrender to terrorists.

    God Bless us all.

  13. Sue K says:

Thank you John for the beautiful tribute. I have 2 children that live in NYC and DC and this day will forever be burned in my mind and heart. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their loved ones on that fateful day.

  14. Pam in VA says:

Memories of waiting to hear from friends families that worked in the Pentagon that day are still very fresh even after 7 years. As well as firefighters that were sent to help clean up waiting to hear that they all made it safe back to their families both the ones I knew and the ones I didn’t. I remember going to the pentagon after the attacks and the sight is one that is forever burned in my memory. America will endure and our soldiers will come home but the devistation of that day will never be forgotten. To those we lossed and are still loosing we salute you.

  15. KathyG says:

We will never forget. Don’t forget not all victims were Americans. There were many other nations that had victims in this tragedy.

    Hi John & Heidi,

We will be joining you for the transatlantic, October 29th. Been enjoying the blog while waiting! A few weeks back I found pictures of the guests gathered around the pool in blankets watching the BIG, BIG screen. Can’t find them again to show my husband. Help?

    Thanks,

  19. Sheryl says:

Thank you, John, for remembering. It’s a hard day for us all, myself included. I am someone who lived in NYC at the time and along with my collegues, was responsible for the safety and well being of the 1000 school children in the school that I taught in. All the while, I was worried about the safety and well being of my husband and 2 sons, 1 of whom was working in the city that day. May we never forget….

    Amen.

It is sad looking out the window of my office building and seeing all three flags at half mast (American, Texas, and company). But the memory of those that were lost, and those fighting for us will not be forgot or taken for granted.

What a wonderful tribute John. All of us will never forget that day, where we were when we heard the news, pretty much like the day JFK was assassinated. Thank you for remembering all Americans who lost their lives, and their families on this day, you are a true gentleman! Linda & Mike

  25. Always Remember says:

    ‘MEET ME IN THE STAIRWELL’

You say you will never forget where you were when
you heard the news On September 11, 2001.
    Neither will I.

I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room
with a man who called his wife to say ‘Good-Bye.’ I
held his fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the
peace to say, ‘Honey, I am not going to make it, but it
is OK..I am ready to go.’

I was with his wife when he called as she fed
breakfast to their children. I held her up as she
tried to understand his words and as she realized
he wasn’t coming home that night.

I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a
woman cried out to Me for help. ‘I have been
knocking on the door of your heart for 50 years!’ I said.
‘Of course I will show you the way home – only
    believe in Me now.’

I was at the base of the building with the Priest
ministering to the injured and devastated souls.
I took him home to tend to his Flock in Heaven. He
    heard my voice and answered.

I was on all four of those planes, in every seat,
with every prayer. I was with the crew as they
were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the
believers there, comforting and assuring them that their
    faith has saved them.

    I was in Texas , Virginia , California , Michigan , Afghanistan .
I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news.
    Did you sense Me?

I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew
every name – though not all know Me. Some met Me
for the first time on the 86th floor.

Some sought Me with their last breath.
Some couldn’t hear Me calling to them through the
smoke and flames; ‘Come to Me… this way… take
my hand.’ Some chose, for the final time, to ignore Me.
    But, I was there.

I did not place you in the Tower that day. You
may not know why, but I do. However, if you were
there in that explosive moment in time, would you have
    reached for Me?

Sept. 11, 2001, was not the end of the journey
for you. But someday your journey will end. And I
will be there for you as well. Seek Me now while I may
be found. Then, at any moment, you know you are
    ‘ready to go.’

I will be in the stairwell of your final moments.

  26. Jeff says:

Thanks for that John. God bless this great country and its can-do attitude and its troops and its ability to keep and grant freedom around the globe. Let’s hope we don’t lose that greatness this November.

  27. kiciaski says:

    John,

Thank you so much for remembering. With the same sentiment as at the concentration camps – we must never forget. There are monsters in every age and we will live through this one too. Although we didn’t know anyone involved in the tragedy we will always remember where we were that morning – the day that everything changed.

  29. NYSchauer says:

Thank you John for remembering 9/11 and those who lost their lives.

I don’t think any of us will forget that terrible day watching the planes hit the Towers and their collapse. Nor the plane hitting the Pentagon or the passengers that crashed plane in PA in an attempt to take control.

My heart and prayers go out to those who lost their life and to the families who lost their love ones.
Our lives will never be the same.

  31. Eva says:

We will always remember and never surrender. Today is a day to honor all those we lost, including my two long-time friends who were in the WTC that day. It’s also a day to honor those who worked, and are working, to help the survivors and survive it themselves, especially the injured, their families, and the families of those who died.
    God bless us all.

    John,

I remember this day well as my husband was on an airplane over New York City at the time of the 911 attacks. For many hours I waited to hear from him to know if he was ok. Thank God he was not on one of those planes . We pray for those who were and for their families and friends.

  36. George Mckay says:

John, thank you so much for this post. I am still in shock and it has been 7 years. I went to a ceremony at Battleship Cove in Massachusetts and while it was a nice simple ceremony with a 21 gun salute there were precious few attendees. I hear the sentiment “we will never forget” and fear it is only empty words.

Folks, if we cannot see the tape of the terrible act of war foisted upon our country because it is “painful” and may upset some people we have already lost the battle. Complacency will lead to far worse. Some people say this is using 9/11 as a cudgel to batter opponents with. What kind of tripe is that? When we cannot be shown what we are fighting it just breaks my heart.

We cannot forget – our very survival as a nation of freedom is at stake.

John and Heidi, thank you for all you do and thank you for my sounding board.

  37. Jason the Mick says:

No, we will never forget. Just like December 7th, we Americans will remember every attack on our sovereignty.

(And as an aside, the “reward of 76 virgins” bit in the Quoran is a fallacy, a misinterpretation spread by the hate-mongering zealots leading the terrorists. The actual reading of the Quoran is much like the Old Testament and parts of the New, very much more a peaceable book than the call for Jihad the extremists advocate.)

  38. Kim Parker says:

Thx John…We will never forget. Kim Parker

  39. John:
For some reason I missed your tribute to 9/11 last night. It was quite beautiful. Thank you! It is seven years now and I still cannot believe the sad disregard for life. I pray for healing of this world.
    God Bless us All!
