Perhaps you're overlooking a unique group I suspect you'll find on almost any cruise. My wife and have enjoyed cruising and have visited most of the ports on a typical itinerary for us. But as the years and the surgeries have grown we find our mobility severely limited. We enjoy cruising too much to give it up and are pleased to have achieved Platinum status with Carnival. But these days we prefer to remain aboard in many ports and while we may not tackle a 2000 piece jigsaw we can be found some mornings outside the Card Room doing a crossword puzzle thoughtfully provided by Carnival, one of the many, many things that go to make up a "Fun Ship", from hairy chest contests to full blown musicals in the Follies theatre. We plan to continue to continue cruising with Carnival and have, in fact, three cruises booked for 2010. We look forward most to one in September which will include our 60th anniversary and though they may not always know what the words mean, the waiters singing "Happy Anniversary". Next time we're on Legend may we bump into you and not Enchantment of the Seas!Bon Voyage.Ken and Lorrene Stevenson

John,

In a recent Blog you were surprised at a couple doing a jigsaw puzzle in the Card Room. I have been debating whether or not I should address this topic....and I decided I should. Do you remember how little I used my scooter on the BC2? There is a real reason for it....besides I just LOVE pain. The handicap get taken advantage all the time. We are marked as a easy target. From cab drivers to theifs that pick our scooters, wheelchairs, ect. I have thought of doing a travel book on how to travel safe for handicap people. I got charged $30 for a taxi ride from NOLA port to the airport when other people in my cab were charged $10.
Anyway, I started this rant to tell you thank you very much for being so kind to the couple and their expensive cab ride. Once again, you are a big teddy bear!

Hi John,<br

I don't think the griper deserved treats either, but I understand the philosophy behind your action. Make him feel ashamed, yes? Or pacify him. Not likely to happen, dude. You did the right thing with the jr. manager for sure. Bet he was surprised! How'd he ever get the job in the first place? And how ever will he explain his "release" at his next interview? As for the cab driver, perhaps you should have jotted down his decal number (or whatever they use over there) and advise future guests to St. Thomas to avoid him like the plague!By the way, I have a feeling your bobbleheads are going to become as well traveled and famous as the "roaming gnome" from Travelocity. You'll be bob, bob, bobbling all over the world! You should run a contest. Something like whose bobblehead racks up the most sea miles in a year, or whose goes the furthest from home, etc. (Bet Linda, mom of your friend DJ would win for most sea miles!)Hugs to Heidi and Thingy, and try not to be too lonely,Your pal, Myra

Hey, John,

I have a “large-ish” TV in my livingroom, but I didn’t bother to watch “the speech.” Can’t bear the sight of the “one,” much less listen to anything he has to say. The ship was not in America and not everyone is American on the ship. I would not want to be on an European Cruise or World Cruise and be fed nothing but foreign news! If the speech was so critical to him he should have stayed home and been imprisoned by his own home! I hope the guest enjoyed the free bottle enough to make his "prison cell" spin uncontrollably! He bullied you (lol)!

Wow John…I absolutely would never have apologized to that guest for not showing the United States Presidents speech on the big screen. When your on vacation you don't want all the hassel of everyday life. Thats why you take one. You should have sent him a stale beer & dried up popcorn & told him don't come out of his cabin until he apologized to you for being such an arse. Oh by the way, I still call guest services the pursers desk. Jamie is still sending great pictures & blogs. Hiking up that mountain looks like a lot of work. Ahhh, to be young again. Only 24 more days till the Victory cruise. Tell Heidi & the Thingy hello Larry & Connie

John, Adam needs to get a life thats full of fun & sun. Oh wait, thats where he was. I give you all the credit for handling it in a calm manner. I agree with the rest of the bloggers in that you should not be showing politics on the big screen. My reply to him would have been, "If the President's speech was so important to you, why did you schedule to be on a cruise when it was being given." What a dolt...

Sorry John, but I have one more on the big screen rant… I give you all the credit for handling it in a calm manner. I used to work on ships in the 80's (NCL and Cunard), and your stories bring back many memories. On Christmas Day, the Cunard ship I worked on was playing the radio broadcast of the Queen's speech, but only in certain areas of the ship (not where I was working), and when the phone call came from the dining room that we needed to make the announcement that luncheon was now ready to be served, I did it as usual. When I went to lunch later in the Officers' Mess, the British officers gave me a hard time about interrupting the Queen's address with my announcement, but how was I to know??? I did what I was told to do, and we couldn't hear the Queen's address at that time. Yes, a big hard time, and no fruit basket either!!!If it were a George Bush speech, would you have put it on the big screen? (I didn't think so...)I like to avoid all news and anything that resembles the "real world" while I'm on a cruise. My mom went on a European cruise on a PaidTooMuchoftheSeas ship last September (my brother took her, so she didn't have to pay anything). When they returned they found out that Hurricane Ike had devastated Galveston, TX and the stock market wiped out everyone else. Now, who really wants news like that when they're on vacation?Sorry about interrupting HRM in 1987.A former purser (I guess that would be former Guest Services person now)

Dear John,

This is my first comment, although I have been enjoying your blog for a couple of months now. It will make those under him feel like they are noticed and cared for.As for AusPearl's comments.... I will try not to judge all Aussies on your singular and stereo-typical view of all Americans. If you care to read the very positive statements above the majority, if not all, disagree with the man who wanted to watch the U.S. President's speech on the big screen. Some even care that those from other countries may not want to watch American Politics.

John,

Good for you for getting on that Jr. Manager.
