Remembering Robert
He would always sit in the third row, middle section on the end seat with his wife Suzann by his side.
Robert would always be the first to volunteer for my shows and by the end of each cruise would be the most recognised guest on the ship.
He cruised with me over 40 times and with Carnival over 50. He and Suzann would always book their vacation based on what ship I was on and so we became great friends. Robert was fiercely loyal to Carnival and if anyone dared to say anything untoward about his beloved Carnival they would receive the full force of his New Jersey personality.
Robert had been recently diagnosed with cancer and as we emailed and as we spoke he seemed determined to join me for the bloggers cruise in December . Yesterday Suzann called the ship and said that he was in ICU and was desperate to talk to me. I spoke to him and although he couldn’t really speak he managed to tell me he loved Carnival……..and me.
One hour later this gregarious fun loving man who lived to sail with Carnival passed away.

Suzann
There are no words that I can write that will sooth your pain but you need to know that we are all thinking of you and that everyone who met Robert will never ever forget him.
On behalf of everyone at Carnival, everyone on the blog and from Heidi, I send you deepest sympathies.
I will miss him very much.
John

Suzann, our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow and grief.
We never got to talk very much with Robert, mostly just speak in passing on the ships. I think the last time we spoke was on the Lido deck on BC2. We sailed with you several times.
Robert will be missed.

Suzann,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this most difficult time. It is always so hard to lose a loved one. How sweet it is that Robert wanted to speak to John before his passing. It reaffirms what we all know, that being, that, John Heald is one of the best human beings alive, who has brought all of us together as one HUGE, happy family. He has brought so much joy and laughter into all or our lives. Hopefully Robert is now on the best cruise ever! He will be missed.

John,
I am so sorry to hear about Robert. My condolences and prayers for his family. I have been reading this blog from the beginning, but have never been drawn to write until now. I don’t know if you realize what a difference you make in people’s lives everyday. You make us laugh, cry and everything in between. Thank you for sharing so much with us. Through you, Robert has had many prayers going for him. I know that our thoughts for his family won’t bring him back, but I hope that they find some comfort knowing that so many people care.

Robert had such a zest for life and enjoyed it to the fullest.

Suzann,
I know first hand how painful it is to lose a spouse to cancer. My wife of 27 years passed away from ovarian cancer in May of 2007. She was only 51. We had always talked about crusing but did not do so until she was in remission. That was in Oct of 2006.
I will be praying for you in your time of grief.

Hi John..this reply is long over due, but in answer to your CD question..We pick our cruise mainly for the destination or our last two was to be on a new ship for the TA. My very first cruise was in 1988 on the new Celebration and the CD was Malcom Kennedy. Quite a bit later went on the older Celebration and the CD was Dave Armour and he was quite a unique entertainer. Gave us many laughs….Understand both of these boys are now in the great cruise ship in the sky. After that I never remembered the names of any CD until I sailed with John Heald on the Liberty out of Rome, now I keep hoping to reconnect with him. Maybe sometime in the future..Regards from TX

Suzann,
My thoughts and prayers are with you at such a sad time. I lost my husband and know first hand how much Robert will be missed. (my husband’s name was Robert). I am truly impressed with this Carnival “family” after reading this blog. I’ve been fortunate to have sailed 5 times with Carnival and look forward to my next.
John, I’m new to the blog thingy but all that I’ve read over the past month has been truly interesting. I hope to meet you in February on the Dream while you cover for Todd.
I’m glad you made such a friend with Robert.

That’s a bit of a shock to hear about Robert and my condolences, Suzann.
I remember him from several cruises, the last being the Fantasy Bloggers cruise. I didn’t get many pictures of him on that cruise, but here are a couple:

Dear Suzann,
We got word of Robert’s passing this morning.
We had the pleasure of meeting you and Robert on the first and second Bloggers Cruise. It was evident that Robert loved cruising with John Heald and Carnival Cruise Lines only second to you! We know you will miss him terribly, but rest assured that if and when you are on a future Carnival cruise, there will always be someone there to share it with from this ever-growing family of bloggers. Our deepest sympathies to you.

We are so sorry about the news of Robert’s passing. Our condolences go to Suzann and the family. We look at his picture and his face is very familiar to us. By any chance do you recall if they were on the Freedom sailing to the Caribbean from Miami last year on 3/8/08? That’s the cruise where we met you and we remember this gentleman volunteering on your shows and he definitely was, as you said, the most recognized person on the cruise! Anyway, if Robert was or not that person, he’ll be greatly missed.

Suzann~ The loss of a spouse is a horrible thing and you and your family are in my prayers. As I thought back on this page today one thing stuck out at me. You and Robert didn’t wait until he retired like soooo many other people you hear of to enjoy yourselves. My husband and i just took our first real vacation (a cruise) this past february after 20 years of marriage. I’m not waiting another 20. At least you have all of your memories to look back on and you don’t have to say “Why did we wait?”
June 21st, 2009 at 9:04 pm
My dearest Suzann,
Our hearts were saddend when we read the news of Roberts passing.
It did make us very happy to read that he did get his final wish in that he was able to speak with John.
When you think about it, his final wish proved him right over all these years. in that , on what other cruise line would you be able to get in touch with the cd of a ship that was in the middle of embarkation.
Guess Rpbert was correct through all these years in his choice of favorite cruise lines and we know he was right in his choice of favorite cruise director.
It may not mean much to you now but when you have a moment think of it this way, that Robert has not really left the Carnival Family.
He is busy getting the “Carnival Eternity” ready for the rest of us when our time comes.
Cindy and I both wish you peace and you will be in our thoughts and prayers

We send our Deepest Sympathy to you and your family. Robert will be missed by many that sailed with him on Carnival.

We know you will be missing Robert as much as you are missing Heidi a Kye while your onboard. I can see you now with a tear in your eye every time you look down to that ” third row, middle section on the end seat” looking for your friend, Robert. Robert was with you for many years before this blog came to being. I’m sure none of the 4,000,000 slape on your thingy will ever replace your memories of those 40 cruises you had with Robert.

Dear John,
Hope you can reply,
First let me say congratulations to you and Heidi on the birth of the beautiful Kye and Happy first Father’s Day to you! How difficult it must be for you to be away from your gorgeous girls so soon. Reading the blog has brought us easily back in time even though ours are now 18 and 15. I was touched to read about the loss of Robert. I am writing today as a follow-up to an e-mail from April. I am sailing with my family on the Splendor on July 5th. I had mentioned that my 18 year old daughter is a dancer and dreams of working for Carnival in the future. You had kindly offered to put her contact with the dance captain on our cruise and she is really looking forward to it. Her year end revue was last week-end and she was named dancer of the year by her dance school. You asked for a few days reminder before we cruise but I am contacting you now since I know you have so much going on. Thanks in advance. Her name is Chelsea Singer, and our family will be in staterooms 7280 and 7282, we were able to upgrade to a suite for next to nothing and we can’t wait to cruise with Carnival again, in only 14 days!! Is there any chance we will be treated to sail away music?
Thanks again,
Lianne Brown & Howard Singer

It is indeed a sad day in the cruise world.
We only just met Robert on the NOLA Bloggers cruise. As with most of the other bloggers he had a great passion for cruising and having fun. Our prayers are with Susan and the family.
People ask us all the time why we travel so much. Our standard answer is that none of us know when we will leave this world. I want to see it all.
Life is short, enjoy life at its fullest, see the wonders of the world and the great people you encounter along the way who will touch your hearts.
John, You must of touched Roberts heart many years ago. You and Carnival continue to touch many other hearts every day.

Suzann,
So, so sorry to hear about Robert. I can speak for many when I say Robert was one of a kind.
In some ways Robert was our “introduction” to real cruising. We had been on a few cruises but in April of ‘07 on the Freedom’s Med Cruise Robert and John did “Dick Little…” We were both laughing so hard I know I nearly peed my pants! Robert – aka Dick – did become a celebrity for the duration of the cruise. I heard about John’s blog thingy before the cruise and started reading regularly after that trip.
After that cruise is when we finally “got it.” We understood that cruising wasn’t just a getaway but it was an opportunity to meet people and share traveling in a unique way. We since joined up with “Big Ed’s Evil Krewe” and have taken this travel thing to a new level. After coming back from that Freedom Med Cruise we also started hearing about the “rest of the story” re: Robert and you Suzann. Your loyalty to Carnival and to John – your willingness to be part of the cruise – your willingness to help out.
We briefly met and talked on “Bloggers Cruise #1″ and learned – first hand – why you both are talked about so much. A more loving, kind and generous couple I’ve rarely met. Suzann, I’m sorry for your loss, I’m sorry for Carnival’s loss. All I know is that God has a plan and he must have needed someone with a humongous sense of humor to walk those streets of gold.
Please know that we’ll be praying for you and your family and together – the Carnival Family – we’ll all be mourning the loss of a truly special man.
Thanks for sharing him with us all,
Owen & Shannon Squires

I was choked up when I read this Blog. Jeanne and I met and chatted with Robert and Suzann a few times when we were on Splendor’s last Baltic cruise. I hope Suzann continues to Cruise and we get to see her again on a Carnival Cruise and honor his memory.I posted this Blog on my Facebook in Honor of his memory.
Thank’s John for the post.
Regard’s
Ray and Jeanne.

John: PLEASE REPLY -
On the Cruise Critic boards, the “Roll Call” thread for the October 3 sailing of Carnival Dream is alive with activity. As I write I see that there are already 262 pages of replies. It has been noted on this thread that Carnival’s itinerary lists an arrival time of 8:00 am on debarkation day (Oct.15). I called Carnival and the lady I spoke to assured me that 8:00 am was the correct arrival time. This seems very unlikely for several reasons and a number of us are relatively certain that the Dream will arrive at least two hours earlier than the itinerary indicates. A correct arrival and debarkation time is important to us when we choose an air line schedule or book private transfers to the airport, tours, hotels, etc.
You are on Carnival Freedom this week and will undoubtedly be discussing such matters with Todd, Dream’s CD. Could you get Miami to correct the arrival time on CCL’s posted itinerary? Additionally, could you give us the approximate time debarkation will begin and let us know if we will be offered “self assist” at debarkation?
Thanks so much!
Dave

…And He who sits on the throne will spread His tent over them.
Never again will they hunger ; never again will they thirst.
The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat.
For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd ;
He will lead them to springs of living water.
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

John,
I am not sure if Susann ever told you that when we were stuck in New Orleans airport returning from Fantasy Bloggers Cruise in Feb. their luggage left on a earlier plane. Roberts concern while we waited at the airport was that someone may steal the bobble heads of you. We laughed and said we will watch ebay for anyone selling them. Thought it would be nice to share a funny story and to let you know how much he thought of you.

I am currently traveling throughout Europe and was in constant contact with Robert & Suzann. I spoke with him last weekend and with Suzann last night.
I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend…..Dick Wooden, Willy Banger and all he stood for!! Cruising was HIS LIFE and JH his BEST MATE!!
I will ALWAYS cherish my times with him…..
Glad you got to speak him him John…one last time!!

I was really upset to see this. I met him on the Liberty Castaways cruise a few years back and I remember him to be full of life and a great guy. My condolences to Suzann and the rest of his family.

We just heard by email from Suzann tonight. Terribly upset that we didn’t know Robert was so sick. We spent some wonderful times with Robert and Suzann and thouroughly enjoyed the reports and pictures from the cruises we were not on with them. Robert will truly be missed. Love to you Suzann.
