I am an avid reader of the blog "thingy" and your post was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. I think it is great that we can have access to a ship's captain and pose questions.I have two questions for you:1. Is it true that the captain is supposed to be the last to leave a sinking ship? Or is this just some Hollywood heroic falsity?2. What changes happened in your profession and the cruising industry in general after 9/11?Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.Genvieve

CAPTAIN SCALA, PLEASE REPLY

Hi, Captain Scala. What a treat that was! I have been on 7 Carnival cruises and he was the most friendly, personable, visible captain I have sailed with. We heard more from him than we did the cruise director, unlike when I had the honor to sail with John Heald on my first cruise aboard the Glory. What would be the ideal cruise....... Captain Scala and John Heald and ME on the same Carnival ship!Kudos to you both... you are top notch!

I had the honor and priviledge to sail with Captain Scala aboard the Destiny in December. Finally, on Nov. 2, 2009, we sailed on "The Destiny", never imagining what Destiny had in store for me. Let me say that the experience was one I soon will not forget. At "Meet the Captain Night", I introduced myself to Pier Paolo and was curious about his last name, Scala, as it was my maternal grandma's maiden name. As I explained that and the fact my parents were from southern Sicily, We both realized that it was the same town and that our families knew each other. Destiny ? My question; how did you guys do that ?

For years, my wife, Fran, tried to convince me to take a cruise. And for years, I refused. Now he will eat with other people around him....even close to him...but NOT at the same table. It is one of those aspects of Autism that is hard to understand and sadly getting worse as he ages. He used to eat in restaurants with the family....but he won't even do that any longer. Only at home or in the car (at a fast food place like Sonic). We are constantly battling to get him to eat with David and I in the formal dining room. Again, he used to do it all the time.....but as he ages...it is becoming more and more of a struggle to get him in there. We don't want him to completely recluse himself....so we struggle to keep him eating with us on every cruise. Sometimes he only stays 15 minutes....on this cruise DJ actually stayed 45 minutes one night and 30 minutes on another night. Sometimes we can not get him to come at all.DJ has started using a service dog at home to see if that will help. So our fingers are crossed .....but even if we did not have the issues with DJ....if we had not been selected to have dinner with you...we are grown adults....we would have understood. We cruised on the Bloggers Cruise for the "experience".It was GREAT to finally meet the FABULOUS RADU!!!!! What an incredible gift he has.......As for the Royal "chumps" .... they are clearly making RCCL look jealous, petty and desperate.Just like men who drive BIG cars when they are not well endowed in other areas.....it looks like RCCL built a BIG SHIP to compensate for some of their passengers being less than endowed in CHARACTER and GRACE. how sad......What these morons don't realize is that they are shouting to the world what immature children they are.....they aren't hurting Carnival at all...since they are giving Carnival even MORE advertisement!!!All press is good press!!!!!!Linda (Mom of your friend ~ who gained TWO POUNDS ON THE CRUISE~ DJ)

John:

I wish we could have enjoyed the pleasure of your company at dinner….but as you know, DJ does not eat with people that he does not know.

And while DJ certainly does know (and adore) you….he only eats with David, me and Josh at the same table. While we don't have experiences with other captains to compare him to, I have to think he will be a tough act to follow. We did the "Behind the Fun" tour and got to have him treat us to a tour of the navigation bridge. He is true gem. He never made us feel rushed - no matter how mundane or routine our questions may have been, how many times he had heard them before, etc. We also enjoyed his daily updates every afternoon and saw him "out and about" on several different occasions while on board the ship. You can tell that he genuinely enjoys interacting with people and has a passion for his work. It would be great to have opportunity to cruise with him again in the future if able to work it out!

We went on our first crise this past week on Destiny with Captain Scala. Just can not understand the rude behavior of people or the lack of understanding when plans have to change. The hard work you put into Carnival is amazing. The treatment of each and every guest whether they blog or not has always been paramount and sincere. I understand the disappointment when plans change! Today would be an example of unforeseen circumstance! One hand washes the other and both hands wash the face ! Please excuse me while I wash the lies of CC down with some sweet tea...( Would have been a proud guest and a proud observer if I were not a guest @ your table! ) In fact, I have enjoyed everyone I have ever met at a Carnival dinner table!Yours,Kap

So enjoyed your blog tonight.
