This afternoon we were sitting around the office, stroking our beards while inventing new ways for people to have fun, when one of us happened to glance at the calendar and realized that tomorrow — Saturday January 22nd — is your friend and our friend John Heald’s birthday.
We’re a day early, but we mean it all the same: all of us at Carnival, from those who wear beards to the 345 people named Stephanie… from Fun Ship Freddy to PA 007 (if only we knew who he — or she — was), would like to wish you happy, fun birthday, John! Thank you for all that you do, and may all of your dreams (including, but not limited to, those featuring Megan Fox) come true!

Happy birthday john! Now a loyal/frequent passenger has a problem. I have learned that Greg Gallello is exiting the Miracle before schelule. I cruised on the Miracle in November and have booked again in March for the purpose seeing Greg play. Was told in Nov that he would be on board unitl May. If this happens I would like to cancel my cruise without penalty. Dont replace the best piano player with someone else.

John – Just got off the Dream from 7 day Eastern Cruise. You made reservations for 6 people to do the CHEF’S TABLE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. This was by far the BEST experience we have ever had. 3 hours of FINE dining, 12 people, 6 waiters, in the galley. Chef Roshen was amazing. Started in The Song with champagne and 4 appetizers, then moved to the galley for a 7, yes 7, course dinner. AGAIN THANKS for your help with this reservation. A MOST for any person that enjoys find dining.

My wife Robin and I are cruising in February on the Carnival Valor, this is our second cruise with Carnival and we are really excited about it. Our first cruise was on the Carnival Freedom for our 25th wedding aniversary in 2008 and we had a wonderful time. We tried cruising another cruise line but were slightly disappointed, it may be that Carnival Spoiled us for other cruise lines.

Sorry that my birthday wishes to you are late, but we were sailing on Mall of the Seas and their Internet service was awful. It was so slow that it cost $5.00 just to log on and send one E-mail. I just looked through all of my pictures and most of them are of the Carnival Conquest. They were along side the Voyager of the Seas most of the sea days and docked or anchored next to each other in every port. After 3 lousy dinners on RCI I told my husband that I wished we could hop on over to the Conquest for a decent meal. Can’t wait to get back to Carnival in May. Boy – everyone on RCI seemed to have negative comments about Carnival – especially those who had never sailed Carnival. Just as well – they were pretty snobby. Hope your birthday was happy!

I also would like to Thank You for your help in getting our group of 24 seated close together on several evenings when we were aboard the Carnival Freedom, January 1 – 9th.
From the 6 year old to my parents in their 70′s everyone had a wonderful time. We enjoyed all the islands, our balcony rooms on the same floor were so convenient, the staff from the Captain (behind the scene’s tour) to the room stewards were friendly, helpful and full of fun! It will be 8 days together that we won’t soon forget.
I would also like to send a HUGE Thank YOU!! to the photography staff for accomodating our request to have a group picture taken on the staircase on the last night. Our photographer had WAY more patience than I have ever seen with a group that size and a squirrely 6 year old. The picture turned out wonderfully!!
Thanks Again for your help John and Please pass on our Gratitude to the Carnival Freedom Staff for making our cruise a wonderful success!!

I then had the bright idea to call the Miami Heat and they said that the Latvian Embassy would probably know how to get hold of you since you liked telling your Bed Time Story to the women of ther nation. First, a belated Very Happy Birthday! I hope it was a good one for you. Now I have a request. I hope a simple one. How do we go about getting a seating for the chefs table on the Magic. Carnival Panama Canal Tour Excursion
John & Beards:
I am writing this to you to let you know what a horrid experience this was for me and my family. We had to meet in the Victoriana lounge @ 6:45am. The room was packed with other shore excursions. Carnival opened up the lido deck early for the early excursions to have breakfast ..good luck getting a table and something to eat it was wall to wall people and packed. I was chatting with people at another table and they did not leave until 10am? I think the lido deck breakfast should have been only open to the early excursions! We were only able to grab a quick Danish and piece of fruit for breakfast as the lines were to long for us to wait. We were on the lido deck @ 6:15am thinking we had plenty of time..not!!!
After leaving the ship for our buses (yes that’s right 18 of them in fact) we boarded the bus (opps I mean death trap, the bus we were on had air dryer issues and I thought the window I was sitting beside was going to rattle it’s way out and land in my lap at any given time) and headed out. Hit a traffic jam (which I understand is beyond your control) we finally made it one hour late to the dock to catch our ferry. This was udder chaos (to small of an area to safely unload the 700 people from the 18 buses! We then walked down a very steep gang plank( I am in fairly good shape and it hurt my knees going down, I did however feel sorry for the lady ahead of me in the wheel chair that they took down backwards,this lady was almost on the point of tears ) to get aboard the ferry.. Once on board the ferry we tried to find a seat. The seats were able to find was on the 3 deck right behind the souvenir shop, guess how much we saw on the canal? Not much, mind you the sides of the ferry are open but they had people in sitting there. The crew on the ferry added more chairs as required; we were crammed in like sardines. I never knew where any life vests were or life rafts. Mind you they do have caymans in the water(this never really concerned me, do you happen to detect a little sarcasm there?)! What happened to safety first? On the other ferry they had a total of 18 lifeboats (imagine a rubber dingy); I think we had roughly 300-350 on our ferry!
After we started out they explained to us that the port side of the ferry was for them to take pictures which we could buy and the starboard side was for any one to take a picture, we were to go up take our pictures and return to our seats. Allowing everyone a chance to get photo opportunities. There were the same people up there the whole time down the canal and most times I tried to go up I was told there were to many people up there I had to wait my turn! Bearing in mind when you tried to get up to the front of the ferry there was a narrow walk way because they had added chairs for people to sit. When they pointed out something on the port or starboard side and people would go to that side of the ferry to take pictures it would list to one side, we went down the canal listing for most of the time. The black cloud of fumes that followed us was the highlight of the tour! They even had people sitting on the floor in front of the bridge!
Ok enough about the canal ride from hell. I will let you know about the staff onboard the ferry. They were rude and inconsiderate of their passengers. I found them very pushy. My youngest daughter really appreciated the fact that someone tried to rip her belly button ring out. A few times I was trying to take a picture and they would step out in front of me to take theirs first? Hmm…. let me see, they see this all the time and therefore one would think they have gotten photos in the past so why do they require them now? If you would like I can forward you the copies of the staff in front of me as I was taking the pictures. Next time you are doing a cruise make sure your staff step in front of the camera, see how quickly you can tick your passengers off! The souvenir shop has one price posted but you pay the price of the day which in turn is higher than on the board (this was usually about $2-5 higher depending on the item). They know you have no time to shop so they make sure your trip is full of memories.
They did however offer us free water and soda, you had to pay $2 for a beer (which our ferry ran out of and people were buying beer from the other ferry), we were offered a lunch of wieners in some red sauce, fruit and a banana muffin on a dessert plate! Our tour operators were serving the lunch. I was speaking with another lady and she told me that she tried to use the bathroom on the second deck (which is in the air conditioning) and was told this was for staff only? We however got to use the bathrooms on the first deck at the rear of the ferry; this was crowded with extra chairs they had added for people to sit. Well worth the $189.99 we paid in my opinion! I am not too sure what the capacity of our ferry was, but we were well over the limit. I do not know
We knew people on the first ferry (she had a walker and would not have been able to move on our ferry, but had ample room to manoeuvre around the one she was on) and they were not crowed and really enjoyed the trip. They did however enjoy watching us go down the canal on a lean! We finally boarded the Freedom @ 5:30pm,bearing in mind we were supposed to be back on board @ 3:30pm.
I allowed myself sometime to cool down and the following day went down to talk to the shore excursion desk. As I was standing in line I discovered the line was full of other passengers that were not impressed. I felt sorry for the girls behind the desk as I am sure they listened to issues (regarding the canal tour) from open to close. Maybe the beards would enjoy reading all the complaints to help them pass the day. My suggestion to you is take this tour next time you are on the Freedom and check it out, this will be a day you will never forget!
We met other passengers that went on the Panama City tour and they really enjoyed it. I wish I known then what I know now. I had also chatted with a lady on the veterans group and they had a private yacht with 65 people, better lunch and made the vessel on time, this was booked with My friend Mario (a private operator)

Have been reading your blog for awhile as I work at a college with tourism programs – always good to hear from someone who is in the industry and I like the little asides your blog takes too! It can’t be all work all the time!
I took my first cruise 2 years ago and find I am addicted! I have taken a few cruises with the “girls” and enjoyed them. My husband is taking some warming up however. He will be on the Inspiration with me as we take our first Carnival Cruise out of Tampa! Chef’s table might be the clincher – if this e-mail helps great but if not, I will try my luck on board!

I just recieved a call from Florida from a lady who said she was a TA from
“Back to the Caribbean”, who said I have been chosen for a vacation since I was the LUCKY one who’s name was pulled from my Carnival cruise last summer on the Freedom while in port at a DI store.. She knew all of my information, email, home phone, address, etc. she was anxious to talk to my husband and myself, but since he was not home
she would call back. Well, good thing she has not yet. I googled the
name of the business she gave me, and I saw all the numerous complaints that are listed. It says the business is a scam, and they are lies they are telling these past passengers to get their credit card info.
I just wanted to get the word out since she used the Carnival name
in the phone call. GOOGLE the business and you will be shocked what comes up.

John, you were our cruise director onboard “Triumph” in 03, and though we’ve sailed with some fine CD’s, you were far and away the BEST! Our girls were “girls” then, women now, and still fondly remember your antics, hospitality, and warmth every time we reminisce of our many cruises. “Smooth Seas”, my friend, hope to sail with you again in the near future.
