John’s Vista Blog- Day 6

May 8, 2016 -

John Heald

Good morning from the Greek island of Crete and a glorious hot and sunny Mediterranean Day for the guests on the Carnival Vista. The guests are ashore exploring and their mood is quite fantastic, yes it really is. OK, there were a few minor moans to me about the scrambled eggs on Lido and that the Casino should be none smoking but without sounding like a broken record I have to say that this inaugural cruise is going brilliantly.

I just spent the last three hours here in the dining room, in my underpants, answering a huge dollop of questions and I will do soa gain tomorrow so watch out for my marker showing where I will start from. I will have more video today and lots of bits and pieces and more discussion points but first, let’s talk about me.

During the first seven days of the cruise here on your Carnival Vista I have met and shaken hands with and had photos with literally hundreds of people. Now that is nothing new as it happens every time I am on a ship. However, this time there has been a remarkable difference and I am trying to work out in my own mind if it’s a positive change or indeed, not.

You see, before it was always the same thing when I met guests on a ship, their opening remarks would always be “ Hello John, we sailed with you when you were Cruise Director on the Carnival——“. But not anymore. Yes, while I still meet guests who remember me as a CD there are far , far more who as they shake my hand or take a photo with me say “ we follow you on Facebook and your blog and really enjoy you”.  The last time I was a CD was on the Carnival Miracle in Alaska in ummm………..bugger, was it 2013 or 2014? Regardless it has been a while so I guess its to be expected. And with 133,000 likes and a post reach of over 1.6 million this past week alone I should then not be surprised that more and more know me from here and less and less know me as a CD which, for some reason, makes me a little sad and I don’t quite understand in my own mind why.

Anyway, less about me and more about the guests on your Carnival Vista. Last night I met a super guest, although I doubt he will remember me. It was quite late. I had been to see Marcus Anthony’s show in the Liquid Lounge ( if you get a chance to see his Motown show please don’t miss it) and was on the deck 5forward smoking area being naughty and enjoying a Padron 1926 Series 40th Anniversary, my new favourite cigar. By the way, if anyone is sailing here on the Carnival Vista and you have a local cigar store and can bring me a couple I will pay you back plus make sure I send you some extra special things – yes, I am begging as they are not available here in Europe.

Yes, I know I shouldn’t but I don’t drink, don’t eat carbs and have less rumpy pumpy then a 89 year old Benedictine Monk, so a cigar is my one vice

Anyway, it was a wonderful clear but chilly night as we headed from Athens to Crete when a guest weaved his way toward me. He was a chap in his 40s and he was walking erratically and was, not to put too fine a point on it, incapable of either coherent thought or coherent speech.

He came up to where I was sitting enjoying my cigar with some Dutch guests who I have known for some time. He just stood there…..swaying gently from side to side …….just staring at me. He a glass half full of some frozen concoction in his hand and I waited for him to say something but he just stood there slurping his Pina Daquari through a straw.

So after a few seconds I said, “Good evening ,are you OK?” He looked like he’d been asked to explain the atomic properties of plutonium. He had the IQ of a onion, the conversational ability of a sock.

Still nothing.

And then……..bizarrely…..he leaned forward inches from my face and said “I Love your Facebook, you are sooooooo fanny, you ( pause to slurp up mkore Pina Daiquiri ) mannnn, loveee you John.” and just as I wondered if he was about to ask me to marry him……he turned round and staggered off.

Firstly I wanted to make sure he was OK and so I called the security chaps and told them there was someone on deck 5 that needed a friendly escort back to their and within a few minutes they arrived and did just that.

Secondly I tried to think what had possessed him to say that. Obviously he was quite happy and very much sponsored by what he had been drinking but did  really love me? Did we have a future together? Was he the one that got away? Will we ever be together?

Right, on we go. More video coming today including an inside look at the Havana Cabana suites and much much more

Cheers, have a brilliant weekend and wish you were here

John I need help me in figuring out if cabin #1472 first floor has 2 Windows in it or 1 window or none. Customer service says they are not sure since the deck plans show all 3. Please help me since I’ve already booked this room for our honey moon.

    Hi John,
I contacted you several times on Facebook. You were going to check on which nights were elegant nights and when the Chef’s Table would be held. I wanted to coordinate it with our long shore excursion days. After three attempts, I finally heard back from the Chef’s Table and it is full. I’d still like to know about elegant nights. We’d like to plan something special for my birthday on June 14th. We are on the June 11th Vista cruise out of Barcelona. Our booking number is 4M4RW3, room #10216. I can only imagine what a crazy time it’s been as you launch a new ship and I really appreciate your help. I am enjoying your posts on Facebook.

We are going to be in Vista come June 21st. Please let us know if you are still in need of the cigars, and we will be happy to bring a few from the States. We sailed with you onboard the Miracle in Summer 2004, and look forward to doing so again!
Do you remember “Dick Little” and his wife “Anita” ???
Best wishes, Alex Forsyth and family.

Well John I’m sorry I missed you on this cruise. My cruise ended on this day at Crete. I had to get off early to go home for work. … downside, my cruise ended, upside – I think I was the very first person to ever disembark on the Vista. It was a short cruise , but I am on the June 3rd sailing, so I get to catch the “Italy” loop then.
