The Days Ahead

September 30, 2007 -

John Heald

Good morning from Katakolon, Greece and an early start for me here at 7:07 am. I woke up at 5:45 am and could not get back to sleep so I thought I would do some paperwork which I have now finished so I thought I would write to all of you.

Before I did I read my mail for today’s afternoon show. The mail is from guests and is left at the information desk at various times and delivered to me at midnight and at noon every day. Many of these letters I share with you in the In Their Own Words Section and 99% are wonderful letters that share lives joys and sometimes sadness with guests onboard through the morning show and here on the blog.

So, I opened the letters and the second one turned my good mood into a ………………well……………not a good one………it’s too early to use any stronger language than that. Yesterday, as we were sailing through the Dardanelles I mentioned that we would now be sailing in the Aegean Sea, something I have done a dozen times this season. However, this week I apparently said The Adriatic. How do I know, here is how.

A Happy Ending

September 29, 2007 -

John Heald

Good Morning………….it is 7:40 am and I thought I would have a little blogging time before the wonders of the day start. We have just begun our passage through the Dardanelles formerly known as the Hellespont is a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. It is a beautiful morning and the sea is calm and flat. The sun has risen and is already painting gorgeous shimmering patterns across the water. There is a gentle breeze blowing, it is a perfect day. She looked lovingly into his deep blue eyes her heart beating faster as he gently kissed her. His firm, strong hands reached down and caressed her………………………sorry……………….I lost it there for a moment and turned into Jackie Collins……..time for a cold shower………..back in a moment.

OK, I am back.

Just getting ready for the morning show. I have 44 letters to read out this morning and then go straight into my travel talk for Greece and Livorno so it will be a busy morning. Today’s show will be one of those where I have not had time to read them before I go live so it will be interesting to see what comes up. Anyway, I am off to the show and I will be back to the blog this afternoon after the travel talk and the Marriage Show.

Introducing Rick Meadows

Introducing Rick Meadows

Ladies and Gents I would like you to meet Rick, who, as you will see, is someone who is truly passionate about the cruise industry and is now a major part of the continuing success story that is Holland America Line……enjoy

1. Rick, you have had a varied and hugely successful career, please can you tell us how and where it started and where the journey has taken you so far.

Thanks. The cruise industry has provided a lot of people chances to find their own success. Personally, I’ve always had a quest for travel. My Dad worked for TWA his entire career, enabling our family to travel the world, that’s where I got the travel bug.

I started working as a Travel Agent my senior year of high school and continued during college. As an agent, I promoted cruise groups to radio stations. It was then I was introduced to Carnival Cruise Lines by my excellent regional sales manager. Shortly after, I had the opportunity to meet and have dinner with Micky Arison and Bob Dickinson during a trade convention — I was so impressed with their vision of the industry and future plans for Carnival. Within a few months, the regional sales manager relocated, and I had the opportunity to interview for the perfect job. In 1984, I started working for Carnival as the Regional Sales Manager for Kansas and Missouri.

That was an exciting time to join the company, as we had three beautiful new ships joining our fleet – the Holiday, Jubilee and Celebration. After a few years, I took on a new challenge as Director of Sales in the Central US, working with a bright team of 22 sales managers in 19 states.

Goodbye Istanbul

September 27, 2007 -

John Heald

Good Morning from Istanbul………our last time here this season……………so of course………….something had to happen……..and it did. At 8 am this morning the Captain called me to let me know that we would be late into port this morning. There was a ship called The Antarctica docked in our place and because of some difficulties she would not be able to leave on time ………. Thus ……we would be late alongside. Our scheduled arrival is 9 am and the captain informed me we would not be alongside until 10 am……………..no big deal I hear you say……….ahhhhhhh, well, actually it is.

First of all we have 2,200 guests booked on a shore excursion this morning. Each one of these 2,200 people have to come at designated times to collect a coloured (spelt correctly) and numbered sticker from the Victoriana Lounge. This is scheduled so that each tour meets and leaves at 15 minutes intervals so there are no long lines and ample seating.

Because we are one hour late, this means that all 2,200 would be in the lounge at the same time………….problem………the lounge seats 1,500 people. So, after meeting with the staff Heidi sent her troops into action and I made the following announcement at 8:45am – in my underwear.’

To All Of You

September 26, 2007 -

John Heald

Heidi will tell you that there are very few times that I am lost for words but today, I am.

I have just finished reading 90 postings of congratulations on winning the Sea Trade award and after that………well, it is hard to know what to say. I wish I had time to reply to all of them so as I do not, I hope you will except these humble words.

It was an honour ( spelt correctly ) just to be nominated but to actually win…..well, it has left me gob smacked.

I must thank Mr. David Dingle who is the Chief Executive of Carnival U.K. for collecting the award for me in Hamburg, Germany last night and apologize for the excess baggage charge he had to pay to get the trophy back home. Thanks David.

Hi, I’m John, and this is my blog. So please don’t mistake my opinions — or those of my dear friends, fans or commenters — for those of Carnival Cruise Line or Carnival Corporation. My apologies in advance for anything I may say that upsets you, but this disclaimer covers Carnival and puts the blame directly on me………….. bugger.
