Good Morning

This will be the world’s shortest blog……….ever. It is 4:30 am and I am about to drive to Heathrow for my 4 days of meetings and hopefully a basketball game ……. playing ………. not watching……..just in case you wondered………although none of you did, of course. Heidi is flying to Holland for time with her Mum.

I wanted though to say a big thank you on behalf of Alan whom I saw yesterday. He looks tired but has the most positive attitude you could ever imagine which was enhanced further by the numerous get well cards and messages I delivered from all of you out there…..I will be home for his next operation and will be there to help him as much as I can.

The Queen's Captain

Very soon a very special ship will begin her very special life. She will forge many pages in the ocean liner history books and forever those pages will record that the first ever Captain of the incomparable Queen Victoria was Captain Paul Wright. Here then, is a most wonderful interview with a man who will soon stand alongside H.R.H Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall on a day he and the industry will always remember.

Captain Paul Wright

1. Captain, I am sure you must be so very proud to be the Master of the Queen Victoria. Your journey to this point must have been interesting and varied. Can you tell us about your life at sea so far?

Prior to joining Cunard in 1980 I had spent the previous 15 years serving in a variety of vessel types including cargo ships, tankers, containerships, ferries, hovercraft, even had a short spell working for a company delivering tugs and dredgers to new owners. My first passenger ship was the Empress of Canada (Canadian Pacific) in 1970 – my duties as fifth officer there besides the navigational side actually included organizing deck tennis and aquatic sports -Ah! the good old days…. I was on the Empress of Canada when it was sold to the newly formed Carnival as their first ship, the Mardi Gras.

Home Sweet Home

The name of the airline is Easy Jet and the only thing easy about them is that it is easy to get so frustrated that you would rather develop a hemorrhoid the size of one of their planes then ever fly them again. More of that in a moment but first of all…….where are my manners? I have not even said hello yet……….so…………hello.

I am sitting here at home writing my first ever blog from off the vessel which means for the first ever time I am writing a blog thingy without phones ringing, and with the constant need to check my watch to see how much longer I can write for without having to run off………….OK…….walk off somewhere else.

The last 48 hours onboard were very surreal. Sitting in the audience watching Todd the new cruise director host the Welcome Aboard talk was like walking into your bedroom and find someone else is wearing your underwear…………it felt really strange……….by the way……..the underwear thing……….you do realise that has never happened to me before ……….right?……….It was just a……never mind. Anyway, I sat there and watched Todd do a great job but boy……did that feel strange.

All Good Things

Where do I start?

You know, a lot of people say to me how amazed they are that I can think of things to write about on the many blogs I have slapped on since the middle of March.

Honestly, that has never been a problem and I have never really had a moment when I cannot think of anything to write…………………until now.

This will be my last blog from the Carnival Freedom until my return in January. The blog will continue as I will tell you all about in a minute but today, the words are just not flowing ……………..I have blog constipation.

Hat’ll Be The Day

Good afternoon everyone and as I begin this short blog I feel a little sad. This will be my penultimate blog thingy before vacation begins. We are sailing between Messina and Barcelona and today, although a little cool the sun has shined down on our guests and after the rain in Messina …………….they deserve it.

As I said, I am a little sad especially as we hit a million readers yesterday and here I am ready to write one more blog after this one………………..I feel like I am letting everyone down.

Let me just tell you my plans for the next few days.

It’s Tuesday morning.

John and I went over the plans for the rest of the day after he had his haircut. There is nothing he likes more than having his hair cut…..not. Fussing is not one of his favorite things, so the quicker it gets done the better. The lady in the spa did a nice job, so I am happy (which is most important anyway, right girls?)

It was really busy with guests on tour this morning, their spirits were a bit down as the weather hasn’t been too great the last few days and today it has been raining almost non-stop. The guests came in with raincoats and umbrella’s in hand ready to go and explore Mount Etna, Taormina and, of course, Messina itself. Everything just looks so much nicer if the weather is better…

I have started to throw things in bin liners and separated “garbage” from “let’s give this away.”

Good Evening John,Here as a follow up from last night____ – Unhappy with Guests saving the seats

Mr. ____ came to the desk to share his comments regarding a guest who was saving six seats in the lounge for the show. Mr. _____ wanted to be noted that he almost got into the fight with the other guests who where keeping the seats. The other guests said that they were allowed to do what they wanted and used bad language to them. The cruise director had come out from behind the curtain and tried to calm the situation down but the guests were abusive to him as well. Eventually cruise director asked the other guests to leave the theatre which they did still swearing. Purser apologized for experience and will ask cruise director to follow up with guest.

Many thanks,

Tamara Djukic

2nd Purser

So, that was my night………… was yours?

Good Morning and more about that it a moment but first……………………………back to Mrs. Weatherchannel.

Feeling the Cold

October 21, 2007 -

There is wind everywhere……………………..not where you think and not provided by sugar free jellybeans but by Mother Nature.

Good Morning from Dubrovnik where the weather is overcast but thank goodness……so far ……….dry. The last two nights though as we sailed into and out of Venice the ship has been battling against 40 – 50 knots of wind but Captain D’Aita has kept the vessel on a true course and despite difficult conditions this morning we arrived ahead of schedule in this historic port of call.

Today, there is a special barbecue for the crew. This is held by the local crew center here in Dubrovnik. A crew center is a place where you can use the internet, telephones and mostly, a place for the crew just to “hang out” and today there will be some complimentary local cuisine. I am going to say a quick thank you to all the wonderful crew for a fabulous season and their continuing hard work.

Back soon.
Here I am. ………………it’s cold outside and just like the Floridian guests our crew from places like the Caribbean and the Philippines are wrapped with layers of clothing. The party for the crew is in full swing and we have scheduled every crew member some time to attend ……………….judging by what I saw they were indeed having a lot of fun.

Thinking Of The Future……A Blog Survey Thingy

4:30pm – Thursday – getting ready for the Captain’s party. You won’t believe this – I now have two cut fingers, the new one happened this evening and I had to tell you about it. So, there I am in the shower (steady girls) washing my hair when I get shampoo in my eyes which stings more than being surprised by a Turkish hose pipe.

The pain of Head and Shoulders in the eye was nothing compared to what was to follow. There I am in the shower, my eyes stinging and unable to see nothing I groap for the tap to turn the shower off…………….and then as my hand headed for what I thought was the tap……………I caressed Heidi’s ladies razor thingy which was placed on top of the tap…………and that was me looking like an extra from some B Horror Movie. Now, as I screamed in pain, my eyes still stinging from the shampoo and blood pumping from my 4th finger that my darling wife would rush to my side………………you would be wrong………..she strolled in, looked at me and said “you are so clumsy”……………….bloody hell, it’s not my fault that she had rigged the bath up like some Delta Force assault course. Just once it would be nice to have a bath or shower and not be surrounded by an entire Wal-Mart store.

I miss my single days when the bathroom was mine……… was just me and my soap………………on a rope.

Here is a photo of my two fingers.

Hi, I’m John, and this is my blog. So please don’t mistake my opinions — or those of my dear friends, fans or commenters — for those of Carnival Cruise Line or Carnival Corporation. My apologies in advance for anything I may say that upsets you, but this disclaimer covers Carnival and puts the blame directly on me………….. bugger.
