While I grew up on a diet of Deep Purple, Saxon, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath and Def Leppard I did occasionally delve into the realms of punk rock. Now saying that, I didn’t have a hairstyle that suggested I had rumpy pumpy with a cockatoo and neither did I have a safety pin through my nose or my thingy. But I did like to listen now and then……..to the Sex Pistols. Maybe it was the rebel in me that when I told my parents I was going upstairs to study the works of Shakespeare for my school homework I was in fact going upstairs to listen to the Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks album on my 8-track stereo into which was plugged a pair of headphones the size of Pamela Andersen’s breasts.

I was reminded about these rebellious days today when the founder of the Sex Pistols Malcolm McLaren died after a battle with cancer and that was sad to see. I wondered if he would have preferred to pass to the big arena in the sky like so many of his mates did.  In the “glory” days of rock’n’roll, drugs, suicide, car and plane crashes or drowning in their own vomit seemed to be the chosen ways to bugger off to heaven….or hell.

Picking up a guitar in the seventies was more lethal than picking up a sneezing pig in Mexico in 2009.  If I had come home from school and told my Mum that I was going to become a mercenary in Angola she would have said “Well thank God you’re not going to be in a band.”

Of course today, music is different……much different. With the notable and noble exception of Kurt Cobain, who blew whatever it was he had inside his head with a shotgun and Michael Jackson whose body had more drugs in it than a Walgreens super store…… today’s rock stars seem to be in good health.

So far as I’m aware, nobody in the Rolling Stones is dead despite Keith Richards being 239 years old. Pee Diddley is alive and even Madonna and Justin Trousersnake have managed to steer clear of their swimming pools.

Perhaps this is the problem with music today. Perhaps dwindling album sales have something to do with a lack of danger. Back in 1985 I would rush to see Ozzy Osborne and the rest of Sabbath play partly because I liked the way it was so loud it would make my teeth bleed and partly because there was a sense that they would all be dead by the following week.

You certainly don’t get any of that from John Mayer. I saw him perform on the Carnival Splendor and while the tunes were great there was no sense that he might be found the next morning in a hotel room full of Latvian hookers.

I would think that Kye might like that type of soothing music but I suspect as she grows up in today’s society she’d like him more if he drove his Lamborghini on Ocean Drive naked and then pile drived a nail through his nose live on You Tube.

Time for today’s questions and answers………off we go

Thanks

John Says:
Hello David

Right now you are on your Carnival Dream while I am here on the Carnival Conquest. I am sorry for the late reply to this but just wanted to say that I hope you are having (had) a brilliant time. Let us know all about it when you get home.

Dear John, please reply.

I’m a huge fan of the blog thingy, and it’s a treat having an excuse to contact you.

A group of us on a Cruise Critic roll call are on the Carnival Legend for a week beginning on May 9. We’re wondering if the someone on board the Legend can help us to facilitate setting up a meet and greet for the first “fun day at sea”.

We’re full of enthusiasm to do this, but clueless about how to go about it.

If you can help us arrange this, I’ll arrange a private evening with Megan Fox for you. Well, maybe not, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp or what’s a heaven for?

Thanks!
William and all the other Cruise Critic types.

John Says:
Hello William Henley

I am so grateful to you for saying you are a big fan of the blog thingy and I hope that you continue to be for a long time to come. I have contacted the Hotel Director and Cruise Director on the Carnival Legend and asked them to reserve a room for you on the first fun sea day. I have also asked that your incomparable Cruise Director “Wee Jimmy” place a line in the Fun Times stating that “Cruise Critic Meet.”

Have a fabulous time and anything you can do to arrange that meeting with Megan would be most appreciated.

Best wishes to you all.

I must say Kye and Heidi look wonderful…..I regret not booking the dream while they were on board….However I did book the Feb 27th sailing of the Liberty….This being my 9th Carnival cruise…I must say I was very disappointed in the Entertainment staff….not the dancers and the singers mind you but Butch the cruise director and his assistants…..I am not sure if it is because I have been spoiled by having you on so many cruises and the cruise being jammed packed with activity….but I have been on other cruises as well that there was lots happening around the ship….this was not the case on the Liberty….and it was the first time ever that there was not a midnight gala buffet…..I don’t eat any of it anyway but I bragged it up to people travelling with us and there was none….I will still always pick carnival to sail on but this is not the first time I heard complaints about this entertainment staff….I wish I had only listened….but I am not one to judge a book by its cover or others comments….Thanks and hope to see you on my next cruise….Angela

John Says:
Hello Angela

I truly appreciate you taking the time to write about this and I have passed your comments directly to Butch the Cruise Director. I know he will be very disappointed to read this and I also know that he will double his efforts to make sure that his staff improve and that more fun is added.

The midnight gala buffet was stopped about two years ago now and has been replaced by “midnight snacks” which has proven to be quite popular.  I know many people enjoyed the gala buffet but don’t forget we have the midnight food now and the 24 hour pizzeria. Thanks again for taking the time to write and I hope we get to sail together again very soon.

Best wishes

John, please respond, guess what, I need a favor

I would like to kinda prank my daughter Christina, she will be sailing on Fascination May 15, she just graduated from U of Central Florida, early education major, and this cruise is her celebration. I would like to e mail the cd, sorry I’m not sure who that would be… so you know, for years I’ve told my kids that I have spies everywhere. All I’m asking is to have the cd and matre’d and who ever that the cd could get to go along, congratulate her, I’d give them some little info they could use like some teachers names and that her sister worked for a short time on HAL’s ship Zuiderdam in the Camp HAL program, stuff like that. I can provide cabin and booking numbers and such. This is a secret let me know how to get this to work.

Dan

John Says:
Hello Daytonadan

I would be happy to help you play a little joke on your daughter. I am not able to give other employees e-mail addresses out but please send me her details via a posting here on the blog and mark the sailing date, ship and cabin number and I will ask Trevor the CD to have a little fun with her. Please write soon.

Best wishes to all

Hello there John (please reply)

I am writing this solely to THANK YOU very much for your help with regards to our Oct3 Dream sailing when our aft wrap balcony had no wrap! A lovely lady Martha from customer care contacted us and took great care of us. Consequently we just booked ourselves and some other family members on the Miracle sailing May 7th. We wish you were onboard with us but we are hoping to sail with you one day. In the meantime I will continue my daily reading of your blog thingy!!

Hi to the family and many many thanks once again.

Bill Cooper Asked:
Dear John,

I am currently booked on the 11/3/2010 sailing the Carnival Miracle. Currently the only excursions available online are for Grand Turk. Do you know when excursions for Catalina Island, Dominican Rep, Aruba and Curacao will be available? I know these are not the normal ports and that is the reason we booked this cruise. I know there is lots of time before we sail but I really enjoy the planning.

Also, do you know who the CD will be on this sailing?

Thank you for taking the time to answer all the questions you receive and I love the blog thingy.

John Says:
Hello Bill Cooper

This is a very good question and I will promise that I look straight into this. I know that we are all very excited to return to the Southern Caribbean and that Mico our Shore Excursion Vice President and his teams are putting together an extraordinary package of excursions for you. I will make sure I let you know as soon as possible what’s happening here and get back to you. I will e mail him now.

Late news : I just asked our Tour Operations people in Miami and they told me their time frame is to have excursions up and ready by the beginning of May.

I will keep you posted.

I can tell you that at this time Malcolm Burn aka Malcolm in the Middle is scheduled to be the Cruise Director for your voyage.

Best wishes and thanks for the kind words.

Dear John, (Please Reply)

It was so nice seeing Heidi write on your blog and I know you are missing them so much. I feel the same way every time I go to NY to see my granddaughter or she comes down here to FL.

I can’t imagine how someone could be as rude as the caller to your show regarding the music she wanted to hear. I’m sure she thought she was quite the gal to be doing that.

As far as Abraham’s comments on hearing that the food on Carnival is not as good as Royal Caribbean or NCL, I think he is listening to the wrong people. We have sailed Royal Caribbean many times and have sailed NCL three times and in no way does their dining room food compare to Carnival. Carnival is way above both lines. So, I don’t think he has anything to worry about, but if he goes with the attitude he showed in his post, I’m sure he won’t be happy with anything.

I am curious to know if you ever got the note that I left with Big Sexy after our Glory trip in October. He said he was going to see you the next week. Also, I am curious to know if you received the package we left for Kye when we were on Dream. I left it at the guest services desk and I knew you were coming onboard the following week and I was assured you would get it.

If for some reason you didn’t, please check with them as I left it there on January 9, just before debarking.

We had such great times on Glory and Dream that we are going on Miracle October 18 to celebrate my dad’s 97th birthday and my hmmmmmmm, let’s just say it’s a major milestone, lol.

We also booked a back to back for Dream for April 2011. I am hoping that you will be our cruise director for that, but who knows? If you aren’t going to be, I do wish it could be Butch as we really enjoyed him too.

John Says:
Hello Frank & Gerri

You certainly meet all sorts in this job and in some way that’s half the fun. Thanks so much for the words of support. We still face the daily battle of persuading guests that have never cruised Carnival not to listen to the opinions of those who climb walls but to come and try the affordable fun at Carnival first and then make up their own minds. I wonder if you can send me a posting (you can mark it private if you wish) with the details of the package. I did get one box of goodies but had no idea who it was from. Please let me know so if it was from you I can thank you accordingly. Please also make sure you write to me nearer the time you sail on the Carnival Miracle so that I can help make you Father’s 97th birthday the most special he has ever had. I hope we get to sail together again very soon and I send my best wishes to you and all the family.

Can you believe my employer blocks your blog (all blogs) and I have to wait until the end of the day to read you?! How rude!

I have been reading your blog every day since I found it in December. I love it! I am going on a B***** Cancer Survivor’s Cruise (arranged by “B” Cancer Wellness Magazine and Amoena) on the Freedom May 2-8. This will be my first time cruising on Carnival. I am rooming with 2 women I met in an on-line “B” Cancer forum. We were all diagnosed in the summer of 2008 and went through our treatments together.

Juli is a single mother and works 4 part-time jobs. Her wonderful grown son is funding her cruise. Genia has been unable to work since her diagnosis. She and her husband are both on disability. I have worked my full time job and a part time job through 2 mastectomies, chemo, radiation and a blood transfusion, so I am funding the cruise for Genia and myself. (Don’t tell my husband) The women I have met on the forum have become like a second family to me. These ladies have been through so much, I wondered if you might be able to arrange a little something special for them. We are in room 1367. Maybe you could send them a corsage for formal night or some fruit for the room or something? I would really appreciate it.

My best to you and your adorable family. I’m disappointed you will not be our CD, I hope ours is 1/2 as good as you.

John Says:
Hello Jane M

How rude of your employer to block my blog. You won’t believe this but Carnival has the audacity to block latvianwomeninsuspenders.com, as well……….ridiculous! I did not know about this special group sailing on the Carnival Freedom in a few weeks and thanks for telling me. I will be honoured to send the special people you mentioned a welcome aboard gift to celebrate their cruise and to celebrate life. I wish you all the best of times and hope you have a fun for all cruise vacation.

Hello John,

We cruised Hawaii on the Carnival Spirit in October 2008 and had our photos taken so many times, we wondered if we had become famous but developed amnesia. Paparazzi everywhere. Since we found one photo that did not make us look as dreadful as we really look, we bought it. Now our church wants to photograph us for the church directory, and since the Hawaii portrait doesn’t look half bad, we would like to use it instead of sitting for another ghastly photo. The church says I need permission from Carnival’s photographers. In writing. Can you help us with this? Patricia

John Says:
Hello Patricia

I hereby give you permission to use the photo for your Church Directory. I am sure you look fabulous and if you need any further help with this please let me know.

Terry Alsop Asked:
John – Please reply!

Love your Blog thingy!! I was away for 2 weeks, and couldn’t wait to catch up! I find myself laughing out loud – and when I’m reading this at work sometimes that can look a little strange – but I do it anyway!

I’m so glad Heidi and Kye had a wonderful trip and I know you miss them terribly! Loved Heidi’s blog segment.

Your comments on scuba diving/snorkeling match mine exactly! Along with your views on skiing by the way. Are we related??

Anyway, as I’ve written to you before, I’m a Canadian travel agent – specializing in cruises. We just returned from our 8 day on the Carnival Spirit to Mexico. The trip was awesome! Great weather and the crew were wonderful! Afterward, I ask all of my clients to complete a short questionnaire, to see how well I did my job firstly and secondly to ask their opinions of the cruise line and their experience as a whole. I will share some of their comments with you. But let me just say, it’s hard to believe we were on the same cruise!

I had some cruise virgins with me this time, and one couple’s experience was above and beyond their expectations! They couldn’t stop raving about the food, service, etc. I also had 2 other first time cruisers who didn’t have as great a time. Personally I think a lot had to do with their dining experience. The ones who raved about it, sat at my table in the main dining room at the late seating. We had incredible waiters (Hi Peter and gang!) and our dining experience was awesome! The others did the anytime option and encountered rude people (waiters included) and said they would never do it again.

I’ve said it before; your dining experience can greatly influence your opinion of the cruise. The only negative thing my people had to say about it was the times should be adjusted slightly. Make the early seating around 5:30 and the late seating around 7:30. They found finishing dining at 10 pm or later was just too late for them, and I have to admit I agree.

There was also a suggestion from one guest, that they should offer a sample platter at dinner, of the various offerings. That way everyone could try a little bit of a few different things, without having to order the whole thing just to try it. I thought this was a great idea.

The other suggestion of note was to do with the pictures onboard. His comment was: “The price of pictures is one thing, but also increase digital options. I hate buying prints so I can take them home to scan them into my online gallery. Why not just sell a digital version online. No media, just a pass code to access the picture online for a limited time. Then I could get the picture I bought, and do what I want with it. “.

I think this is a great idea! Have a CD or something available for each guest, with all the pictures taken of them while onboard. Price it at around $50 and I know you would sell way more! Plus the guests could do what they want with them once they get them home.

Anyway, I’ve rambled enough for now, just wanted to pass along the feedback!

Keep up the good work!
Terry

John Says:
Hello Terry

Thanks for the kind words about Heidi and Kye. It seems so long that they were here and I cannot wait to see them again.

The review of your cruise was a joy to read especially as you had first time cruisers with you who hopefully have now gotten “pregnant” on cruising and will join us again soon. We are currently trying a brand new way of selling and distributing the photos we take of our guests. This experiment is currently taking place on your Carnival Dream and I will hopefully be able to write about its success very soon. We realize that the age of digital photos is rapidly overtaking prints and we will, I promise adapt accordingly. I also loved the sampler idea and will send that up the road to the VP of Food and Beverage.

We know you have many choices where to send your clients on vacation so may I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to you for all the support you give to Carnival Cruise Lines.

Thanks again for the great suggestions.

Best wishes
John

That’s all for today…………….actually…………….it’s not.

Let me first of all show you a reply to a question made by a blogger about cursing the Great Lakes. This reply was written by our Senior Vice President Terry Thornton whom I thank so much for taking his valuable time to write this reply, here it is:

Dear Mrs. Hume,

I want to thank you for your recent letter.  We appreciate your time and the opportunity to hear from you about Great Lakes Cruising.

We agree that having a Carnival ship operating in the Great Lakes during the summer season would be a huge success. We actually studied this very carefully about 4 or 5 years ago.  Unfortunately, we discovered that even our smaller Fantasy-class ships (70,000 tons) cannot reposition into the Great Lakes.  The ships are too large to navigate through several of the locks that are required in the transit from the Saint Lawrence Seaway into the Great Lakes and between several of the Great Lakes.

I think your itinerary suggestions were really strong and we could definitely visit some exciting places in this region. The tourism benefits would also be significant.

We want to thank you for sailing with us on the Carnival Pride.  These new cruises from Baltimore have been very well received by our guests.  The convenience and affordability for guests that live within driving range of Baltimore is very important.  In addition, the Carnival Pride is a beautiful ship and the officers, staff and crew do a great job in providing fun and memorable vacations for our guests.

Thanks again for sending us this exciting new cruising idea.

Best regards,

Terry Thornton
Senior Vice President – Marketing Planning

Well, that sounds like good news to me. I know that Terry and his department are looking at new and exciting places for us all to visit and I will promise that all your suggestions will be sent to him for consideration.

I will return to the subject of blog comments later.

Yesterday we were in Freeport, Grand Bahamas and in front of us at the huge dry dock facility were two Holland America ships. Here are a couple of photos I snapped from the bow.

I am not sure what HAL ships these are. I think it’s the Maasdam and the Statendam which ……. and I may be wrong in this………..are heading to South Africa in the summer as floating hotels for the World Cup………..that’s “sacccccerrrr” by the way.

So, here we are in Key West and I was kindly reminded by the ship’s command before we arrived here this morning at 7:30 am that the Key West authorities have very strict rules and regulations about “noise” while the ships are docked in their beautiful town. This means we are not allowed to play movies or concerts on the Seaside Theatre big screen and not until we have let go the ropes and the ship is away from the pier can we have any live music on the open decks.

And so this morning as I walked across the Lido Deck to get myself a bagel (my sugar level was low – oops) it felt strange to be doing so with no music being played live or recorded………there was the sound of conversation and one man chomping rather loudly on his bacon and eggs. So quiet was it at 7:45am that as I walked back to my cabin across the Lido clutching my precious bagel that when I let out a momentous fart…….I thought I might be arrested by the Key West police for noise pollution.

We have been docked at what is called the “Navy Pier” and that means that we have to use a trolley service to guests into town as they are not permitted to walk through the area. It’s like Grand Cayman tenders……..except guests are ferried into town on Disneyesque parking lot type trolleys. It is a bit of a pain to be honest and there has been a wait of up to 10 minutes for a trolley this morning but it is running as smoothly as possible.

There was some confusion about the chocolate mints which we leave on the pillows. It seems by the way that they are very popular judging by your comments here on the blog thingy. However, some of you reported that you didn’t get one recently on one or two ships yet I had seen them here on the Carnival Conquest and your Carnival Dream. So I decided to ask outright what the story was from one our vice presidents. Here is the answer:

They are back on all ships but to regain inventory make take a week
Ian- VP Hotel Services

So basically we had some inventory problems for a few cruises for which I apologize but the important thing is that the chocolates remain on your pillow. Oh and please remember that if you have to much drink that they can be quite scary. If you stumble into bed at three in the morning having been drinking Fun Ship specials all night and collapse on to the bed on top of the chocolate it will melt…….and you will wake up at noon the next day with a large brown stain on the sheet……….and that is not pretty.

Here is an updated version of the current piano bar entertainer schedule for all those who enjoy the brilliance of these great musicians.

OK, on Wednesday I wrote that that there would be no bloggers cruise this year and that I would like to hold one around mid-February on the Carnival Miracle, Carnival Glory or Carnival Liberty. Well, that seems to have provoked a lot of rebuke especially from those living on the west coast. I got comments like this one:

I have been begging John for the last few months to have a West Coast Bloggers cruise, but now I have come to the conclusion that it will never happen since from what he has said, he only listens to a few of his bloggers and they are on the East Coast. Personally I would really like to know from John WHY he will not even consider the West Coast.

Don’t count on it, John really has no interest to even be a CD on the West Coast, if he had, he would have been here sometime during the past 22 years.

These comments are from someone whom I know is a big blog fan and I am very grateful for that. But there are times when I have to jump to my own defense and this is one such time. You see, to say I have had no interest in being a cruise director on the West Coast is absolutely not true. I have been an employee of Carnival Cruise Lines for 23 years come August and like every crewmember I am TOLD what ship I am going to. Yes, these last few years since my promotion to senior cruise director I have had somewhat of a say but the final choice is not made by me. The reason I have not been a CD on the West Coast is because quite simply Carnival has never placed me there and I want it to be heard loud and clear that it is for no other reason than that.

I do realize that there are people who would like me to be the CD on a West Coast ship though and I am honoured by that. And that is why I have asked the Miami office to allow me to be the cruise director on the Carnival Splendor from August through December. I am waiting for the final approval but am very optimistic.

Now, let’s move on to the Bloggers Cruise which I have asked to be in February 2011. I have not decided what ship yet. In fact that final decision will not be mine, not in any way, shape or form. There will be lots of people involved in the final decision and once they have rubbed their beards ………….and studied what they study…………they will let me know. Now, I have given them the suggestions of Carnival Glory, Carnival Miracle and Carnival Liberty and time will tell what ship they decide on. But NO decision has been made yet I can assure you………..and I can assure Moca Joe especially who wrote this.

Two months ago we decided we were going to cruise the Carnival Miracle on Feb 7, 2011. The price at that time was $699 …. Then it went to $729 … then $759 … then $779 (this happened over a short five week period). Now I see it’s up to $829, but it all makes sense now. I’m sure the bearded ones KNEW this was going to be the BC4 cruise, so they raised the cost incrementally knowing there would be lots of passengers wanting to cruise on BC4. There’s no sense in casting a vote because there’s little doubt that BC4 will be on the Miracle. I’m glad I reached my threshold two weeks ago and instead booked on the Carnival Glory. The Miracle has the itinerary I wanted, but after watching the price go up 3 times in five weeks I decided to go elsewhere. Glad I did because now I don’t have to sit through Bedtime Story and all of the other same material that I’ve heard on my three previous cruises with JH.

Well Joe, I respectfully have to tell you that you are wrong. Any price increase has absolutely nothing to do with me or a planned bloggers cruise. We haven’t even discussed this with anyone from reservations or marketing. As for me and the fact that you have seen my shows, well I understand mate and I apologize. I have new stuff every week but the bedtime story and other “stars of the cruise” bits are the same and I am truly sorry for that. But once again, I have to defend the accusation about pricing…… promise on all I love that it has nothing to do with me or a planned bloggers cruise.

If planning a bloggers cruise is going to upset so many people maybe it’s best I don’t do one. There is only one of me and I do my best everyday to please as many people as I can both here on the blog and live on the ship. Reading these comments and the ones people have sent me links to on the cruise boards has really made me quite sad and at times quite angry. And I feel a real sense of panic like I have done something wrong……the same panic you would feel when your wife, your girlfriend and your mortgage……….. are all 30 days late at the same time.

There have been very few days when I wish that I was just another cruise director……. and after reading how I have upset so many people……….today has been one of those days.

And some of you may think that there is no need for me to be hurt because a few dozen out of many thousands of bloggers ventures the opinion that I might not be 100 percent brilliantly fascinating and funny for 24 hours of each day. So come on John, stop worrying about what one or two think, you big girl’s blouse. Stop taking offense at the drop of a hat and blubbing like an American Idol reject.

It’s ironic that in an age when I expose myself more than Tiger Woods’ penis I seem to have grown more fragile. Feed me attention, I say, but only on my terms. If I can dish it out….I have to take it. But reading those personal attack comments does leave me feeling like setting fire to my own bollocks while a loudspeaker in my head keeps telling me that I am the worst cruise director in the world, a fat chap with a bent tooth and a face like a slapped arse. Usually…….I just laugh it off ……… ha-ha-ha…………..but sometimes………you just can’t.

See you all on Monday

Goodnight
Your friend
John

Hi, I’m John, and this is my blog. So please don’t mistake my opinions — or those of my dear friends, fans or commenters — for those of Carnival Cruise Line or Carnival Corporation. My apologies in advance for anything I may say that upsets you, but this disclaimer covers Carnival and puts the blame directly on me………….. bugger.
